    I'm late, but as someone who owns fully upright, real arcade cabinets and have built customer arcade sticks I have some experience I'd like to share if you ever decide to update this tutorial. Suzo|Happ parts can still be purchased but since the move to produce parts in China there's been changes in some materials used, but it gets the job done and no one really would tell the difference except for a few. The 'cherry' microswitches tabs fits into .187 female quick disconnect. If you're into automotive/electronics then you're familiar and should be capable of removing the ones that's used for the Sanwa buttons and crimp on new .187 connectors so you don't have to damage/modify the ones with the kit to fit on these microswitches. It'll be some extra work, but you'll have something that's cleaner and will fit snug and tight. There's a total of 3 tabs on a microswitch. 1 by itself on one of the side and 2 next to each other on another side. The single tab is for the ground and the other cable needs to connect to... the tab closest to the single tab (NO = normal open; for open circuit, which means there's not going to be anything going open until the circuit is closed by depressing the button) the other tab is the NC, for normal closed; that circuit will remain closed/on. Which means that it'll be like someone is holding down the button. You don't want that. As for tightening the button nut, you can buy a "button wrench" for Happ buttons.
    Although these mods are great, people need to bear in mind that the control panel layout was designed to fit this Arcade 1Up mini arcade cab. So 2 player play is going to be very close as a full upright cabinet is a bit wider providing more elbow and overall space. Personally, I think this is great, but am not a fan of the control panel layout. One could go further and create their own wider control panel (with the know how) and with the provided kits/mods, but it's more work and more cost.

    Excellent tutorial video man! Very in depth and descriptive! I even learned some more things about Launchbox/Bigbox. I have modded 2 cabinets so far and I purchased the forever license. I used a Dell SFF Optiplex 7010 with the 1650 Nvidia graphics card and maxed to 32gb of memory. That was all done on my Space Invaders which I modded with a 4 player control panel. I'll probably be going back to this video as I reconfigure things on my cabinet. Great job man!

      @@KillerArcadeGames Hello. Thanks for the video. I am completely new to this and your the most detail I have seen and it’s great. I need the baby steps and your just about there. Lol. There are several things I would still have to clarify or understand better.
      As for MAME. Is this just for Arcade games. I see people that have thousands of games including NES and SNES, and many other game consoles even newer ones like PlayStation and so forth. Are you only installing Arcade games with this. I think I have learned so far that MAME is for Arcade games. Maybe I’m wrong.

    A good informational video.
    but personally I don't think it's worth the time to mess around with the extra stuff (Launchbox etc), but I can see why you did for your particular setup since it's more optimal to be as automated as possible given it's in a arcade cabinet and you are trying to keep more typical use (with mouse/keyboard through typical MAME) at a minimum. but for more of a typical person, something like X-Arcade etc running a typical MAME setup variation will offer more bang-for-the-buck.
    but just to list what I use, as it might be beneficial for others... I suggest using something like Linux Mint (Xfce version) instead of Windows as you can still run the Windows version of MAME emulator on that with Wine installed. you won't have to worry about updates/sleep etc since, by default, Mint will look for updates if connected to internet (by default it checks shortly after boot up, then every 2 hours) but will not install any without your permission. but even this can be disabled upon boot up easily enough in the 'Session and Startup' section and simply uncheck the 'Update Manager' and then you don't have to worry about updates and you can leave this connected online if you want since there is no real security risk here since nothing is accessible. I don't think screen monitor powering down after inactivity will be a issue either, but even if it is, that's easy enough to fix through 'Power Manager'. basically on Linux there is less stuff to mess with you vs Windows and it's completely free and can be installed to pretty much any hardware.
    there is a Linux version of MAME to (the official version) which can be installed (on Mint or other Ubuntu variations) with 'sudo apt install mame' (currently this installs MAME v0.242 on Mint 21.1-Xfce which is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS) and it looks basically like the one in your video here. but with this, it does not like UMK3 Plus BETA 2 (it appears all official MAME versions cannot run this since it requires loading four additional files that the official MAME versions don't appear to be programmed to do) but you can get it working with 'MK2 Plus BETA 2' simply by running 'mame mk2.zip' from terminal (once your roms are in proper folder etc) since that apparently ignores non-matching file hashes.
    I use Linux Mint 21.1-Xfce currently on my primary PC (i5-3550 CPU at 3.5GHz etc) and run HBMAME 0.245.11 (Apr 7th 2023), which is the Windows version, specifically for MK2 Plus BETA 2 (from Dec 18th 2018)/UMK3 Plus BETA 2 (from March 7th 2022) as it works with those games out-of-the-box (you may have to tweak file naming of your ROM files as I did and left it in a extracted state without zip, but I think you can use zip to etc) unlike official MAME which does not. if you don't plan on running modified games, then regular official MAME might be a better choice. but I personally like HBMAME specifically for those two games where as the rest ill probably just use the official MAME release that comes with Linux Mint that I mentioned above. but if someone needs to run a older version, it's probably easier to just use the Windows version on Linux through Wine.
    for those who want to access the 'EJB Menu' very easily (simply pressing 'block' when it's enabled will immediately take you to that screen instead of having to do it officially with very fast hands as it appears you got to be within about 4.5 seconds which I doubt I can personally do), you can do that to as I got small XML files applied to MK2/UMK3. it's off by default. but it's easy to enable temporarily by going to the 'cheats' menu after you start up MK2 etc, then simply enable the EJB menu, close out of that general screen and press BLOCK on Player 1 (Player 2 side might work, but I never tried it) and you will be taken to that EJB menu. after adjusting your settings and restarting the game it will go back to normal as the EJB Menu will be 'off' in the cheats and block button will function normally again. but if for whatever reason the game gets stuck and won't exit the EJB menu, you can press 'TAB > Dip Switches > Service Mode = Off'. then you can properly exit the EJB menu and game will work as expected once again.
    I run a X-Arcade stick which works well and is probably a easier/cheaper alternative for those who want a arcade like experience but without paying TOO much money for it. it's button layout is not exact to how MK2/UMK3 and the like are, but it's close enough to where you won't have any issues playing.
    TIP: with that HBMAME, which I would imagine will work on official MAME to (which I have not tested yet), is that optionally, if a person wants to practice replaying a certain character or boss on MK2 etc, you can create a save state with 'SHIFT+F7' and then press a key on the keyboard like say '9' and it will create a save point. then if you want to get back to that precise moment when the game is running, press 'F7' and then select your save point from menu shown and it will immediately resume from where you left off. this can be beneficial for people who want to replay Kintaro/Shao Kahn over-and-over from MK2 for example without having to replay through the game like usual to get there all of the time as this can help one get better at the bosses and spend less time doing it. what I suggest is if you reach a point you want to save, pause the game with the 'p' key, then do the SHIFT+F7 etc.
    TIP: you mentioned in the video that MAME maps the buttons weird... newer versions of MAME (I don't know exactly which version this took effect though) are easy because it's named properly with 'High Punch' etc right from the TAB screen when configuring controller instead of 'Button 1' etc, so you know exactly how to configure it with no confusion. but if you want to use a older version of MAME for example, it comes out like this (on MK games) with the 'button x' being what MAME shows and what you want to assign to it for proper button setup (so for example when you set 'button 2' in MAME, you press where you want the HP to be which is top left button on X-Arcade etc)...
    Button 2 = HP
    Button 5 = BL
    Button 3 = HK
    Button 1 = LP
    Button 6 = RN
    Button 4 = LK
    on my X-Arcade stick (I got the older 2 Player model with serial port connection (which I bought the USB adapter for it years ago so it works on pretty much any PC), which I had since probably sometime in the 2000's decade) I have the button layout like...
    HP RN HK
    LP BL LK
    RN N/A
    note: the "N/A" I did not assign since it's not needed. I setup two RN(Run) buttons because it gives people a option to choose which they want. I pre-programmed SLOT 2 on my X-Arcade stick so that one only needs to assign the 'RN' button to either one and it will work on both of those since you can program the X-Arcade to pretty much any key on the keyboard and I programmed both 'RN' buttons there to the same key on the keyboard. so instead of having to assign two keys through MAME, I only need to do it once since the two physical buttons on the X-Arcade stick are the same key on the keyboard. so MAME basically thinks I am pressing the same button even though I am not.
    in the HBNAME I mentioned above these (the 'button 2' etc naming) are not needed since it's easy to tell given things are named properly so you can't be confused, assuming you already know basic button layout of MK games in real life (which I mentioned above pretty much, but slightly tweaked to suit X-Arcade stick).

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks very much for posting this I had no idea any of this was even possible!
    Definitely going to give this a go, sorting software atm which is going well.
    I have come across a couple of features on MAME that you might well have come across but I'll share just in case you have not.
    The info screens that popup every time a game is run can be disabled. A mame.ini file needs to be created first then edited. Just go to your MAME dir and run the commands below (the first ls just shows the file does not exist initially). I used powershell for this guess msdos prompt would would just as well.
    PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini
    ls : Cannot find path 'C:\Games\Emulators\MAME\MAME216-mk\mame.ini' because it does not exist.
    PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ./mame64.exe -cc
    PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME> ls mame.ini
    Directory: C:\Games\Emulators\MAME
    Mode LastWriteTime Length Name
    ---- ------------- ------ ----
    -a---- 29/12/2020 16:40 11192 mame.ini
    PS C:\Games\Emulators\MAME>
    Edit mame.ini (notepad will do), in section for CORE MISC OPTIONS set skip_gameinfo to 1.
    Unfortunately I've not found away to stop the warning messages that emulation is not 100% (not too worried though).
    One other thing as a kid I always hated that the display units were never really sharp, I know some people want to recreate the scanline effect and that is fine each to their own. However if you should want to remove this try the -nofilter option at the command line as a test (it even works if you add it as an option in launchbox when added to Default Command-Line Parameters), I love it... no more blurred display!
    Thanks again,
    Paul

    • @KillerArcadeGames
      @KillerArcadeGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did find the skip game info screen option! Its actually in the regular menus of MAME, only on newer versions though. I originally changed it by using the .ini method though. This comment will be helpful to those who see your layout of the command prompt...commands lol. I've heard the only way to stop the warning screens is to compile your own version of MAME (which seems way above my pay grade). I'm really interested in trying the nofilter thing. I like the idea of scan lines but never got them working when I tried.
      Thanks Paul!

    • @paulm1035
      @paulm1035 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KillerArcadeGames Sorry, -nofilter does not give scanlines it just removes all filters I personally prefer this but can understand why others would not, try pacman with -nofilter I think it looks awesome. Thanks! Yes you can use the buttons that come with the Arcade1Up. The sticks can be used too but I'm not sure exactly what has to be done to use them. They might just plug into the USB encoder board or you might have to splice wires. The splicing would be more difficult but I have done it when upgrading the sticks on my stock Killer Instinct Arcade1Up cabinet.

    Think a Intel e5300 running windows 7 has enough to run the cabinet?

    • @KillerArcadeGames
      @KillerArcadeGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike! I'm always a fan of using a PC over the Pi or Pandora's box. The PC you mentioned should work well enough to run games up to the level of Killer Instinct. I'm not sure you'll be able to run games like NFL Blitz though. The only other issue you might find with using an older PC like that is the boot up time will be longer than using the PC I linked to. My first version of this video showed me using old PC's I had lying around, one had a similar processor speed and an old school hard drive. That PC took at least 2-3 minutes to boot where it was ready to be played. The PCs I use now and link to have SSDs and faster processors so I can be playing a game within 1 minute of flipping the power switch. Its a minor inconvenience though so if you don't want to play newer more processor hungry arcade games, you can use your PC.

My adjustment board was in the back of the cabinet instead of in its cradle so I fixed that. First of all thank you for your videos and dedication to this game!! I am currently in a bind with the K.I. Pro A1U cabinet. My intentions were to buy the KI Pro and modify it to play MAME and other emulators, but at the price point I was considering buying something that needed less hours to get into it's final desired state. Would you be able to weigh in on your overall thoughts and feel of modding a "Pro Cabinet" versus buying something already multi-emulated??
    P.S. hope to see you at the Arcade Expo!!

    • @KillerArcadeGames

      Buying a pre made emulation cabinet will be tough to find for less than the cost of a pro cabinet. If it is cheaper it’s highly likely it will be running a raspberry pi which won’t be powerful enough to run KI and definitely won’t play games made beyond that. I assume you want a larger cabinet than a standard Arcade1Up? It would be a ton cheaper to find a regular sized 1Up and mod that. I’ll see you in Houston!

    • @KillerArcadeGames
      @KillerArcadeGames  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its capable. I have a MAME shooter cabinet with Sinden guns that uses this PC. The probably with some of those games is they just don't run on MAME or aren't emulated well. Time Crisis 1 runs fine on MAME, 2 is nearly unplayable because of bad emulation. TC3 doesn't work at all. House of the Dead 1 works but 2 will only work in the Sega Model 2 (maybe 3, I can't remember emulator) and I'm not sure if HOTD 3 is emulated at all.
      A lot of people use console emulation of those games with isn't my specialty so I can't say for sure how well it works.

    • @KillerArcadeGames
      @KillerArcadeGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a way to somewhat apply button settings to all games. When you press tab and choose "Input (general)" then apply the settings there. This will work for most games but some games have specific input names and you still may have to edit a few game's controls. If your setting your controls every time you open the same game, you may have something wrong with your MAME. It should be saving it after you've changed them. There also may be an issue where Windows is changing your USB device IDs when you reboot. Do you leave your controllers plugged in at all times? Or are you plugging them in each time you want to play? I've noticed if I unplug or plug in a USB controller while the PC is running, or change the ports, MAME will typically not recognize the controller as the same joystick number. It sounds like you don't have a cabinet so if this is causing the issue, you might have to leave them plugged in or note which USB port each device is in, only unplug them once the PC is off and plug them back into the same ports before booting again. OR, you can write up a controller config file (I've never had luck doing this) that will make MAME always keep the device ID's the same no matter if its unplugged, plugged into a different port or if things have changed in your PC. Sorry, this is a lot lol.

      Buy the USB encoder boards that are linked in the description and wire the controls to them. They’ll come with short wires but they should be enough to connect your existing controls. Your controls will then be wired to the PC with USB and seen as their own controller. I think your toughest problem would be if you’re trying to use the CRT in the cabinet. I’m building a MAME cabinet out of an old MK2 currently, the CRT connection to the PC was the biggest pain for me. I’m not finished, but I did get it working by using an old graphics card and some hacked drivers to make it display properly on a CRT. That said, you can use cheap converters that should work but they won’t look as good. If you have the cabinet converted to LCD, this won’t be a problem.

    Liked the video except for the controls setup. Always set controls in general first. Then if a game doesnt play well with the setup use input this game. Perfect example is mk. If i setup a 6 button layout as top row 123 bottom row 456 it wont work well for mk as you know button 4 and 5 are lp and lk so top row would be hp bl hk. The bottom row would be lp lk rn. Not as nice as swapping 6 and 5 to put run in the middle bottom row in this example. If you always use this game input to set controls you will have to do it for every game you add. When the standard street fighter 6 button layout works for 95 percent of games with no changes.

    I had some trouble with the external power switch segment - the pc i used for this (dell optiplex 7010 SFF) had a power switch pinout with only 5 pins, and the switch i ordered came with 4 pins, how would i connect this properly?

      I’ve only done it once on a Dell and can’t remember exactly which pins it is. You can just try different pins, if it powers up the PC you’ll know it worked. I did run into an issue with Dell PCs and the button. The PC would halt boot up because it knew the stock setup had been disconnected. It still worked but you might have to press a keyboard button to let it finish booting.

    EXPERT QUESTIONS FOR ALL: I am not that good with any of this stuff but I can play the hell out of NBA Hangtime online on my Arcade1up cabinet. I have an IMac desktop and fiber 1000 connection. I use Ethernet to play online (I think Retro Ralph was the video I saw that showed how to do that). The creators stated they use an emulation to run NBA Hangtime (probably Nba Jam and Jam T.E. too). Is there a way to put the original NBA Hangtime ROM on this cabinet to show all the players (really just wanted Reggie Miller and Glenn Robinson) and keep the online play? Is there a way to view the original software of NBA Hangtime to see how they programmed it such as the smarter drone or the rubber-banding cheat?
    For Tournament Edition, is there a way to put the original Mortal Kombat characters back on this game and the fatalities? I read somewhere that after version 2.0 they took them out.
    Finally in everybody's opinion do you think this is a good emulation/MAME of NBA Hangtime? Seems to me the gameplay, such as too many hung dunks, is not like the original arcade version.

    How did you do the rest of the pins for the power button? When I plug in just the power like you show and power up the PC, it says 512- rear chassis fan will not turn on. Using the old switch everything is fine. I can't find what looks to be proper pinout of the motherboard online. Any help would be great as it is the last thing I need to get my build complete. I modded the 4 player controls to each have 4 buttons so it covers almost any 2-4 player game minus fighting games.

    So I am all set. I found a cheap Mortal Kombat online and have the PC ready to go. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me though. My PC plays most of what I want it to but if down the line I wanted to get a pandoras box (some of the newer stuff doesn't work on my older PC) would it be as simple as switching out the PC or will all of the equipment and buttons etc need to be redone?

    • @KillerArcadeGames
      @KillerArcadeGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mike, sorry about the delayed response. You should be able to use the same joysticks and buttons with a Pandora's Box. The USB encoder boards wouldn't be needed though. I believe all Pandora's Box's are JAMMA so you'll just wire the buttons and sticks up with those JAMMA wires. The video signal may be different so you might need an arcade video to HDMI/VGA converter. That's about $30-$45 depending on which one you get. I've never installed a PB but if its JAMMA, its like installing a standard real arcade PCB.
