Many years ago, in a small club in Monterey Ca. Willy and his band just knocked our socks off. For weeks afterward we collectively walked around town saying, "Where the hell are our socks?" I've seen many bands in my day; Stones, Springsteen, Mayall, and others. Nobody brought it like Willy.
too bad he had to go to Europe to be recognized, we don't seem to be able to recognize real talent in north America, Willy was fighting cancer at this time, what a true performer, I am a real fan forever, RIP, see you on the other side my friend
better late than never, for i never heard about willy till around 6 months ago, and fell in love with music and voice. may your songs bring more joy to many and hope you are resting in peace
Poor Willy was suffering at this time fighting off cancer, thus the morphine request. He was so so great. I pay tribute to him almost every night that I gig.
Jim DiBattista I'm not sure that's accurate. When this video was shot I believe the reason he is sitting and the reason for the pain is because he had a very bad car accident a few years earlier. He had come home to find his wife had hung herself and he had to cut her down. Interviews I've seen have him talking about how he went nuts that night and got in the car driving crazy and had a bad accident. He was severely injured and I recall the story being that he had a bad problem with one of his hips that needed surgery and disabled him to a large degree for several years while he recovered. He couldn't stand up while he performed, hence the seated position during this time and the need for pain meds. (although I'm not sure given his addiction issues in the past that he was allowed to medicate for the pain). My understanding is the poor guy was actually in a good deal of physical pain/discomfort when this was filmed (not to mention emotional pain). The cancer diagnosis came quite some time later and not long after he'd been diagnosed with either diabetes or Hepatitis, both of which he had. He went in for treatment of one of those conditions and learned he had the pancreatic cancer. I think it was only 6-8 months later that he passed in early August of 2009. He was an extraordinarily talented musician and incredibly gifted, but the story of his personal life is often a very very sad one. Sometimes it's kind of heart breaking to watch these videos. But we are lucky he left us with so much amazing music and I personally am glad he is now pain free in every way and at peace. Love him so much. Wish he was still here making music, but I think this World was more often than not just too much for Willy.
My personal theory is that people who have for years and years used junk, and morphine, painkillers, and methadone have messed up their body's natural pain killing process. The addict's endorphins don't distribute properly anymore, thus the need for pharmacological "help" in that department. Don't ask me where I came up with this theory...ahem
@@askthedogwalker1278 Love Willy his talent Soooooooooooooo much. I knew of some of his struggles but not of his wifes suicide... Thank you! Heart goes out to him XX th-cam.com/video/6BN_I9ul-7k/w-d-xo.html
He was an amazing talent, a great man...an indios, and his wonderful music made you walk on the wild side of the life...handsome guy, luckily i saw him in concert 3 or 4 times in Milan Italy...he is really loved here ..RIP Willy you are so missed!
...wie wunderbar, wie gut, wie überragend, das war Willy - er müsste wissen, wie sehr wir ihn alle lieben...hab viel Freude mit Joe Cocker und Amy im Himmel.....
I think his music was quite similar to that of Steve Van Zandt and I was a big fan of both of them back in the 1980s and saw them live in London and actually met Willy backstage and got his autograph
claudiotheram I heard this song for the first time today and instantly fell in love with it. I told my mom it reminded me of Bruce's "City of Ruin", dont you think? Bruce should totally cover this!! he would 100% do it justice
ho pensato la stessa cosa anche io proprio con quella canzone, ma springsteen e deville hanno molte cose in comune, che non dipendono da loro quanto alle loro ispirazioni comuni, vedi tastiere e sax soprattutto
this was originally on the album CABRETTA, WHEN WILLY WAS YOUNG. I THINK HIS VOICE WAS BETTER ON THIS VERSION .FOR THE BLUESY SONGS LIFE'S PROBLEMS OVER THE YEARS THE BLUES BECOMES EVEN MORE REAL.. LIKE THE BILLY JOE SHAVER SONG " THE REAL DEAL" THOSE YOUNG HOT SHOTS WILL NEVER HOW HE FEELS CAUSE HE'S THE REAL DEAL

I always thought: "This song would be a perfect song for Bruce Springsteen & the E Street band in a tribute to Willy Deville"
I enjoyed the song. Too bad the audio was slightly out of synch with the video when the singing began.
