Wow, quel beau trip quand même. Tes photos de nuit sont vraiment très belles. Vous avez bien fait de ne pas tenter le sommet. Vaut mieux être safe. La montagne sera encore là demain...
Great awareness video. Way too many people ignore the dangers that are right in front of them. Mount Washington is no joke. Worst weathered mountain in the world. We hiked that mountain 5 times but only summited twice. Due to weather conditions. One time in the middle of August. Huntington ravine trail about 2000ft up. High winds came out of nowhere then rain, hail then snow. Had to turn back. When your mind and body tell you, no way. Best listen.
There’s signs all over the White Mountains saying this is the worst weather in America. They’re not joking. Ive been up to Tuckerman Ravine snowboarding probably 5-6 times, I think I’ve only gotten to the ravine maybe twice because of the weather.
Even though you didn't make summit, it was still one hell of a trip. Can't imagine how your legs felt having to walk most of that on your tip toes, speaks volumes to the shape you are in physically and mentally for that matter. As much as I love cold camping, I've never expeirenced it in the open (always been sheltered by a forest), let alone near the top of the mountain. I can only image the sense of freedom and serenity that comes with it. Thank you for sharing brother!
Freedom and serenity yes but also very much feel like any small mistake and you’re toast. I’ve hiked the majority of the mountains up there. The presidential range is the most exposed dangerous and unforgiving year round.
Hailing from Maine I fully understand the harsh winters and have frequented mount Washington many times. Bravo to the attempt and even more respect for safe decision making. Pride has been the death of too many people trying to summit many a mountain.
Any day you decide not to summit is a good day! Great video. Glad TH-cam recommended it to me. Are you French Canadian by chance? You sound very similar to some of my friends from Quebec. All the best to your next adventures
Great video. Love how you explained your thinking on turning around when the weather wasn't going your way. Might've been a long drive, but that was the right call for sure.
I did that trip back in winter 2018, your video makes me tired and cold all over again. Nice job. We went in summer of 2018 and it was one of the warmest days ever recorded and I think that may have been worse, not a cloud in the sky and barely any breeze, baked!
RIP Christopher Roma. A very experienced hiker who perished in the Whites this week in brutal conditions. Know when to turn back, There's no shame in it and live to summit another day.. I'll be heading up to the whites next week to winter summit a high peak. If conditions are too bad I will sure be turning around. I hope this is a wake up call to all winter mountain hikers..
Wow Marty , belle expédition ! Tu avais de superbes images en plus . Il est sage de retourner de bord quand on a un mauvais feeling , aller au delà est un risque inutile . Merci pour la vidéo !
I'm new to your channel so thank you for all the work and stamina climbing many areas twice, in order to film. Few people get to see the winter beauty of this mountain and I feel fortunate to come along vicariously. (I can no longer climb) Glad you decided not to summit due to conditions. I look forward to more adventures.
A few things... you seemed psyched to be back there! Welcome back! Those b-roll shots in the winter are some dedication. And learned that little bit of putting dry clothes over wet clothes and drying them out. Need to have the right materials of course but not sure I ever knew that. Good info!
@@martymorissette Finally had the chance to go out for a hike on a recent cold day. Finished up and was sweaty. Put on my synthetic puffy coat and warmed up and got dry! In the past I probably would've rushed to just put on dry clothes. Yay learning things. :)
I would never use the candle lantern in a tent ever, especially in a tent with major wind out side. I had my tent get a hole and drop on my sleeping wife when it caught the top on fire. always be safe and use battery power! but great video and can't wait to go winer camping soon. great pictures
The candle lanterns is designed for that it helps with heat in the tent and more importantly drys out the condensation and humidity. Thanks for watching my friend.
Excellent video and trip! It’s a shame it was snowing and zero visibility. Been there a few times myself but had better conditions. Would have loved for you to have stopped at the Adirondacks of New York on your way to the Whites. The Canadians love the Dak’s!
Thanks for watching! I am pretty familiar with the daks! I do have 12 winter peaks under my belt! Looking forward to continue to chip at those 46 over the years!!!
Awesome video with beautiful footage of the mountain. look like you took the right decision to turn around. These decision are hard to take sometime but it doesn't worth it to risk your life. Better to back for another trip. Merci pour ce beau video.
Definitely no joke for sure 👍🏻 Great effort Back to base layers. I still like my merino wool but I've now got a set of the Duluth Noorvik underwear. They are awesome 👌 Check them out when you get a chance. Great video Marty
Lets be clear here that Merino wool is defenitly a great material and will work just fine but in the climate that I play in (Very Humid and cold) polyester has property that are hard to beat! If I went in the Arctic circle... I'm pretty sure I would want to go with wool!!!!!!! Cheers my friend and I will check out that company!!!!
Cool trip. They already lost a young lady hiking in the whites right at the fall to winter transition. You’re totally correct. What route did you take exactly and where did you camp? I’d like to do the same thing sometime. Thanks
Great effort man ! Good decision on not pressing on. That mountain isn’t going anywhere. I’ve been up there three different times and all three times the weather was entirely different each time. Take care !

Body drying clothes is a pretty rare skill I think people are afraid to commit to doing it or even talk about it since doing it wrong can go real bad. I like to add a dry base layer next to my skin when I do it.
Wow. You're as legit as they come, Marty. Lots of wisdom in this video -- thanks much! The northeast (along with everywhere else it seems) has had some wild weather this year. Third time's the charm, eh?
It's the "deadliest mountain in North America" because there's a road to the top, shuttle busses to take you down, and a huge visitor complex at the summit. All that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, and inevitably somebody among the masses has a heart attack on the way up, or some yahoo hikes up wearing shorts and a t-shirt in April.
Yeah the shoulder season is what gets people out! The weather pattern is mainly something most folks out here are used to as well it can catch you off guard!
Those aren’t the ones who die, it’s skiers in Tuckerman, people who don’t have the skills and/or gear to be up there, and people who don’t realize that it can go from bluebird skies to whiteout in 15 minutes. The last time I hiked it was in mid-October 2015, below 0F wind chills at the summit, and Tuckerman/Lion’s Head was full of people in jeans & Cons with packs that barely looked like they’d hold a bottle of water and raingear.
No it’s because of the insane weather. They get winds well over 100mph, they get whiteout conditions that’ll hit very suddenly and extremely cold temperatures. Compared to other mountains this place is crazy. And it’s not even just Mount Washington, it’s everywhere in the White Mountains. Just this January a triple crown hiker froze to death on the Pemegiwassett Loop. A 35 mile hike. It’s not just tourists it’s anybody caught unprepared.
How difficult conditions are, I want to congratulate you, your effort and desire to come to these difficult conditions. Thanks for your extraordinary video.

This is a legal spot to camp. The rule is 2 feet of snow which doesnt look like it there but there was a really think layer of ice under that snow plus the accumulation. I think the video conveys the challenge of the mountain and I've showed great respect to it.

Forgive me for being… stupid i didnt understand how do you do that , you wear a dry layer over the wet layer ?

Just at MEC or REI they are called candle light
