Great video. I’m 68 yrs old now, so I no longer do the serious winter trips that I once did. Your video brought back a bunch of good memories of the backcountry winter mountaineering I did in the past. Thanks.
My man! Dude this trip was absolutely amazing! Hard AF.... and many emotional ups and down... a healthy amount of type 2 fun! Right in the pocket if you will.... lol I can't wait to do it again next year!
I so appreciate you comment that what pushing oneself is looks different for different people. That inspires reflection in me which can lead toward greater growth. Thanks!
I did the Egypt lake hike when it was only like -15 and we stayed in the cabin. Then I went up red earth to Egypt lake in like -10 with a tent and snowshoes. That was a lot of work in a day. Snowshoes just sank in the snow. -35 and 4 days is wild! Great content guys!
Hello 👋 Justin, thank you for sharing this amazing outdoor adventure. You did a superb job of filming. I look forward to your next exciting adventure. Stay safe out there. 😊
I really appreciate those of you willing to share the beautiful scenery from trips like this! I love looking at winter wonderlands, but as a subtropical native, I have no desire to ever subject myself to those temperatures. Thanks for letting me enjoy the spectacular views from the warmth of my home!
Oh yeah! Glad you like the snow stakes. You guys covered some serious ground. I had to rewind a few times when you showed the maps. Watched yours and Marty's back to back.
I love your winter trip videos Justin! Thanks for taking us along! That first down hill ski section was great and impressive to skin it with a heavy pack on!
Thank you for all of your winter backpacking content. It has encouraged me to learn more about winter backpacking and to work toward testing my own skills.
Watching your puffy covered in snow while you hike is giving me supreme anxiety. Since it’s a lifesaver piece, I’d recommend putting it inside a stuff sack (Iike a sleeping bag) and if needed for space saving, compressing it a bit. But a stuff sack will keep it nice and dry for sure
Great series! Ever try Mesh / Fishnet baselayers? Manages moisture real well in cold temps. Seems to be the standard with Scandinavian XC skiers and military, but for some reason has not taken off outside of Scandinavia. Brynje is a good one...
When i use to snowboard with boots that had holes id put a sock on first before the plastic bag, and then another sock on top. Felt more comfortable than feeling that plastic bag directly
Fantastic video, Justin! Congrats on the beautiful trip, and all of your effort to film and edit it so nicely, as well as all of the useful advice. This is the sort of trip that I used to love doing, but haven't in a few years. A side note about your Rab Mythic Ultra down jacket - I bought the same one a few months ago, and tore a rip in the sleeve in the first minute I put it on. While it's a marvel of design and materials, that 10D fabric is so delicate, that I realized that I'd never wear it in the wilds again without a shell over it. I sold it and replaced with a Rab Neutrino instead, even though it's not box-baffled like the Mythic, but much more durable.
Outstanding! I appreciate all y'alls candor: you honestly said that some parts would have gotten you down, other folks said they were tired and spent - but other you tubers would say "everything is awesome, fun, wonderful, Unicorns and Fairy dust 🦄🌠🌈."
Such an awesome video! I love that you explained how the skis and skins work; I'm from South Africa and have never been skiing, so that was super interesting to me!
I think it’d be great to see your recovery after a trip like this and how that differs from say a summer hike. I’d imagine the days and maybe even weeks would be a bit of a struggle and it’d be good to watch to see how you deal with it.
You always have the very best, videos, Justin! Amazing trip, and I love how you shared that it’s so important to keep pushing ourselves. I feel the same, and I’m constantly planning upcoming adventures so that I can keep learning and growing. Very inspiring, as usual!
Beautiful terrain to tour in! I finally got a pair of AT boots, hoping to update the rest of my gear soon so I can do uphill and alpine. Winter is the best!
The Canadian Rockies are so incredibly beautiful ❤ I just found your channel through marty's channel and I subscribed after watching this video 😊 looking forward to watching more 👍
What a beautiful video! I love deep winter backpacking. We don't get those amounts of snow or those kinds of low temps where I live, but even a couple inches of snow can make for a fun trip!
Wow, what a lovely trip man!!!! Loved every bit of this video and congrats to you guys! Looking forward to see more of your expeditions! P.S GGG is for sure the best place to shop! I’ve received my orders 2 weeks ago and everything is perfect!
Looked like a fun trip. Would like to see the last day and heading back. Worried about the late start and heading by avalanche terrain at dusk. I'm working on my Av- 2 training this year. I get it.
My Nemo summer pad is a lot comfier than my Thermarest summer and winter pads, but I think I'd agree with you that it's not worth faffing about with unreliable gear when you're in demanding conditions as-is. Glad I don't need to start saving up for a new plush winter pad :D
Great video. Next time you should consider cross-country skis. Look at the Rotefella Xplore binding. You would be able to do the flat parts way faster, and put on half-skins for the climbs
Great trip Justin! Mythic Ultra puffy is my favorite of many jackets I own, warmth to weight ratio is unreal, I call it “my cloud jacket” it’s so lofty lol. On the other hand, I am now doubtful whether to invest in Tensor pad, not a big fan of Thermarest crinkles but…
Awesome trip!! Have you ever considerd using a rulk? A rucksack pulk or packpulk that is. It’s basically a backpack with a pulk strapped on it. You would have some type of a light towing belt on you and a rope based towing rig. When you’re going on flats you just drop your backpack down and just keep going and your backpack just glides along. There was some post on backpacking light by some Swedish guy that used that kind of a system skiing in Sarek national park in Sweden and he said that sometimes it felt even to easy😅. He had a few versions of this ”incredible rulk” and I think the best version was a paris pulk that was cut to length of his backpack. Weird looks guranteed😂
Interested in how you like the liquid stove. Definitely the way when it’s really cold, but I’ve used isopro down to about -25, but closer to sea level. Would love the winter review on that!
Nice! Sweet trip and way to go getting through all of that! I bet your buddies were wishing you were a snowmobile enthusiast instead of a backpacking enthusiast during some of those uphills. 🙂
Hey Justin. Just a small note: cold doesn’t come up from the ground, your heat goes away (down /towards) area with less heat (i.e the cold ground). The role of the pad is to slow that transfer of heat maintaining the gradient of heat over the pad thickness. If successful, your skin temperature remains a comfortable 30degC while you sleep with a core temperature of 36-36.5 degrees. I’ve been enjoying your videos.
How did Marty do without fires? I always admire his winter hot tent trips and fire building/cooking….this trips seems a lot different than his norm. Great story/video! And thanks for the honest review on the Tensor! I haven’t put it to my own test yet but it’s good to know the potential issues with it.
Beautiful area. Watched Kane’s vlog too. But none of you had or use cups of soup? Such a winter trio treat! And nobody should stray from the Xtherm for cold. Lol. I get why but that warmth for weight cannot be beat. Still. 😬
Thanks for being the go to guy for “true cold” weather gear ratings. As much as I don’t love the chip bag sounds, the warmth of the X-therm makes it hard to beat. How was your Garmin battery life in the cold?
Dude, love your videos!!’ You’re an epic teacher of the rigged cold and melting heat! Truly a great channel… -30! Bro! Did you an Eric Hanson secretly met up 😂 He too was in the Rockies but CO
What a great video. Have you ever experienced your sleeping pad deflating on you if you set it up and then a few hours later, you come back to it in the cold.
I think the concept of getting a dew barrier over the quilt is great, and the vapour barrier on the feet is interesting too but don't you risk getting more blisters because of the damp skin? Thanks anyway for the good tips, nice video and amazing trip! 👍
about your sleeping bag: I noticed the zipper does not go the full length, plus its centered on the top. In the event that your feet should be getting too warm, could you ventilate the footbox somehow? Reason asking is that I am inclined to purchase it.
Hey Justin. What a great trip! When I have watched your previous sleep system set up videos for extreme cold you combine a reflective mat and foam pad with your xtherm. You didn’t seem to do that here do you think that impacted the tensor warmth comparison?
Great video ... Loved the scenery ... A couple questions about the Skytour AscentShell Jacket you used ... OR has a sale going on and I am considering getting it ... What are your thoughts on it? Does it do a good job of managing moisture? ... i.e., Keeping it out and allowing it to escape?
It's been my go-to winter shell system for years now. I just replaced my original set. Ascentshell is one of the best "breathable" membranes I have used (up there with Neoshell). It does a better job than a lot of other shells I have used, to the point I wear the shell system for the up and down when ski touring (most people take their shell off).
Give the Exped Ultra 7r another chance but use the normal rectangular version instead of the mummy shaped one you tested since it has down insulation in all the chambers.. best pad ever;)
Man, don't know how you do that with pretty heavy packs, you must have at least 35lbs in there, maybe more? How warm do you find those ski boots? I'd be tempted to add electric boot warmers.
This was great! Thanks Justin PS - did you say your hygrometer broke? Was it the govee one you featured in a recent gear vid? And did it die due to the extreme temperature?👍🏼🏴
Epic trip, Justin! In retrospect I’m curious if you have regrets about choosing skis over snowshoes for this trip. I imagine there are pros and cons to each. Skis would be worth it for the downhill spots, but I imagine they are much heavier than most snowshoes so the sloggier cross-country/uphill trail-breaking sections would be tougher than if wearing good light snowshoes. Would you take the skis again?

Im a big "boot liners in the sleeping bag" guy. I've had great success with warm and dry boots in the morning using that technique.
Hello 👋 Justin, thank you for sharing this amazing outdoor adventure. You did a superb job of filming. I look forward to your next exciting adventure. Stay safe out there. 😊
Just watched Marty's video. YOU BOYS ARE ABSOLUTE BEASTS!!!! Thanks for filming all this boys. Bravo work.
I really appreciate those of you willing to share the beautiful scenery from trips like this! I love looking at winter wonderlands, but as a subtropical native, I have no desire to ever subject myself to those temperatures. Thanks for letting me enjoy the spectacular views from the warmth of my home!
I love these types of videos you put out. It's what got me into winter/snow backpacking!!
You guys are amazing, doing all that and filming and trail blazing in the snow. Great job!
Great video, Justin! I so appreciate that you share both the physical and emotional aspects of the adventuring experience. You rock!
That by far is the best ending of a video.
Excellent adventure and video, Justin. Thank you. I love these types of trips.
Route finding in snow without GPS is not easy, even when following a road, or a well-established route. GPS is a lifesaver.
Oh yeah! Glad you like the snow stakes. You guys covered some serious ground. I had to rewind a few times when you showed the maps. Watched yours and Marty's back to back.
Yeah!!! I’ll have to check out those snow stakes!!!
I love your winter trip videos Justin! Thanks for taking us along! That first down hill ski section was great and impressive to skin it with a heavy pack on!
I miss Canada, here in Germany it's forbidden to camp. Can't wait for my next trip.
Thank you for all of your winter backpacking content. It has encouraged me to learn more about winter backpacking and to work toward testing my own skills.

Love your videos. I'm in Alberta and its so inspiring to see someone going on adventures locally.
Thank you for taking us along....great trip!

Not just TH-camrs! I ski tour and winter camp all the time in British Columbia. It’s fun if you squint a bit.
Epic trip. Spectacular views, great gear reviews and tips, and clearly a heck of a challenge.
I watch all three of you guys awesome trip. Great adventure and good skiing. Great term, micro topography, so descriptive.
I love my Samaya 2.0 - such a great tent! Had it out in winter in deep snow and it was perfect. Great video, looks like a hard but fun trip!
Such an awesome video! I love that you explained how the skis and skins work; I'm from South Africa and have never been skiing, so that was super interesting to me!
This video was really good. Well made, well edited. I loved it.

You guys are beasts! What a places, what a views 🤩
Amazing video as usual! Although this looks absolutely beautiful, you guys are definitely tougher than me haha. Looks like a great trip though!
This makes me want to try winter camping even if I'm not a pro
Oh ya for the Happy Yak spaghetti. One of my favourites
Looked like a fun trip. Would like to see the last day and heading back. Worried about the late start and heading by avalanche terrain at dusk. I'm working on my Av- 2 training this year. I get it.
Dudes you guys are badass I’ve been to Canada twice and it was during the summer but this looks gnarly
Awesome video. Would love to do something like this, if I could handle it. I'm no spring chicken. You guys rock!

wow very interesting experience friend
What a great video. Have you ever experienced your sleeping pad deflating on you if you set it up and then a few hours later, you come back to it in the cold.
Very cool vid. Greetings from Sweden 😊
You are well trained if I was at the same place then I would do it silently no recording 😂
Great video! I also like Karn’s video.
I think the concept of getting a dew barrier over the quilt is great, and the vapour barrier on the feet is interesting too but don't you risk getting more blisters because of the damp skin?
Thanks anyway for the good tips, nice video and amazing trip! 👍
Thin sock liner, plastic bag, thick/insulating sock is the best combo ever. Just swap out the liner sock daily for bone dry boots and insulating sock
Looks like a beautiful but tough trip. Kudos for completing it and filming/documenting it at the same time. Cheers!

Could you have stayed at the cabin if yall wanted to?
Beautiful video. What camera did you use?
I have so much trouble with intros.for me every 5 miles of Trail is really 6 for camera retrieval. thanks for showing us your methodology.
I don't see the cap you're wearing to ski in listed. Which is it? Looks great for ear coverage as well as sun.
Amazing ❤

... or rather the Exped Dura 8 R LW
@@camouflage962 you are right the dura is an even better pad I have one myself but it's too heavy for most people unfortunately
What do you guys do with your food at night on these winter trips?
Man, don't know how you do that with pretty heavy packs, you must have at least 35lbs in there, maybe more? How warm do you find those ski boots? I'd be tempted to add electric boot warmers.
What about putting a 16 hour hand warmer in your boot the get up to 165 degrees
What size sky tour pants do you wear? Thanks
This was great! Thanks Justin

Skis are better in 99% of use cases in my experience. Faster uphill and downhill and better float.
Humidity inside the Nemon Tensor Extreme makes the insulation sheets stick together?!
Hello Justin, may I know the name of your headgear or a link of it would be helpful! Thanks a lot
Great vid! So do we get to see the trip home after? Did you ski all the way back or have someone pick you up?
We set up a shuttle and skied about 9km downhill back to the pickup car
Not to mention all the commercials they have to shoot!!!!
how exactly do you fill up the platypus without spilling all the water?
Hi
knuckles heads
what ski equipment did you use ???
@JustinOutdoors have you tried Brynje mesh base layers to manage moisture in the backcountry?
Those temps on the first noght were insane. Whats the lowest you had the xtherm to?
Outhouse! 35:10 *pointing Rick Dalton meme*
What kind of tracking service do you use?
good vid, how did you get out? Access to the lodge?
