To be fair he is mostly a car camper than a hiker...He often uses gear that is so ridiculously heavy that he never hikes more than a couple of yards from his truck.

Next time you use that set up, use an aluminum or plastic carabiner to clip from the tent to the ridgeline. Then you won’t have to thread the ridgeline through the loop in the top of the tent. It will be a lot quicker, setting up and taking down.

I love being in a big thunderstorm. Something about the raw energy makes you feel alive. When is a teenager I spent a summer working as a groundskeeper and work it got out and my ride hadn’t showed up and this storm was coming in me sitting next to a garage with nowhere to cover, I actually ran onto the porch of the house next-door. And watch this massive thunderstorm roll up. They’re very few places around where I live where you get a very large chunk of the sky because of all the trees. But boy this one time watching that storm come up on me, after that, I had so much more respect for the weather.
Thank you Luke for taking us so long today. It’s very relaxing to listen to the storm when you’re in your own home. Kathy.

Speaking of having a tough bout with Covid, I went into the er on Dec 10, 2020 with dual pneumonia. Went on a vent and into a coma for 6 weeks. Had fever temps during that time of over 108! Yes over 108. My family was told I most likely wouldn’t survive and that after 17 days on the vent if I survived I’d be a vegetable. Thank God that didn’t happen but I did suffer severe nerve damage causing me to loose 90% feeling in my legs and feet. I spent the next 10 months in 3 different hospitals fighting multiple issues like staph infection, sepsis, mastoiditis, and spinal meningitis that led to a brain infection. I lost all of my muscle tone and I’m still in pt now 3 years later and hope to walk again someday. I’m only 55 and I’m still dealing with the emotional trauma of such a huge change in my day to day living. I’m now fighting bladder cancer. Just finished my 3rd round of chemo and I’m hopeful I’ll be cleared soon. 🙏🏼
I realize this is a long comment but for those that think Covid was nothing for everyone… I felt like sharing. BTW I was pretty healthy prior to this, traveling for work often and woke up one day and couldn’t feel my lower body.
I used to love the outdoors and 4 season camping and I enjoy watching your channel. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

YOU are blessed that you did not suffer brain damage! I hope you know how blessed you are too. I was in the medical field for 17 years various jobs, one of the last was nursing. I also spent 10 years in ER. Highest fever treated during those times, 106--the person died. I stand amazed. I also worked in a nursing home where several of our residents died during severe high heat--hot weather. Their body temps reached in excess of 105--could not cool them down, they died. We had one worker pass out with heat stroke at 106 body temp with seizures, she did survive, covered her ice head to toe off to ER in ambulance and ICU for one week in coma. I passed out cold from heat exhaustion, my body temp dropped and my body could no longer control my body temperature, ran out of salt and potassium. I recovered after a few hours. STayed on the job sipping warm water and OJ. AFTER that the facility got huge commercial sized fans and turned up the AC to cool the place down into the 90's instead of working in the lower 100's! They would force us to stop working every 45 minutes to drink water and orange juice.
Because people died in Oregon a few years ago in 116 degree heat working--new laws in our state now force employers to provide Air Conditioning for employees! Employees are not to be exposed to heat higher than 80 degrees, sustained without breaks for water, if it is an outdoor job, a cool place must be provided that is air conditioned and employer must provide water! If the business cannot do this and they have employees who pass out, or die, their business will be shut down by the State of Oregon and they face fines, huge ones. INDOORS, there must be AC provided on days over 100 and employees are to be given WATER and ORANGE JUICE breaks if working in nursing homes/hospitals and such, that is hard labor--always on the go, lifting and such. It is amazing how times have changed since I last worked. NO one should die on the job because they where worked to death in the heat.
I am glad Covid did not kill you. I had a varient of the Covid and I was very ill. Doctors told me I would have died, had it not been for vaccines I had already had--after these were made. To date I have had 5 vaccines for Covid. I have been exposed to several cases of Covid--people sick, and one case which had no symptoms. I got sick with symptoms of Covid--but tested negative--plus never got really sick. This was within just 10 days of a vaccine. My MD said it was due to the vaccine that I did not get sicker, and also the reason I tested negative, but should isolate for others sake. I did. My Uncle Had Covid too, almost died from it, and had the syndrome of Covid, the fatigue for a year. I only had the Covid synrome, the terrible fatigue for 6 months. Yes, I do believe in the vaccine! My Uncle never got vaccinated, he had pnuemonia, in both lungs, affected his heart and lost weight, and was hospitalized for 3 months. He has never been the same since 2019. It totally changed his health and ability to stay well.

You are 100% correct, in my opinion, for choosing to leave instead of "manning it up" for the video. My oldest son, my brother and I went on a POORLY planned, under funded and near starving camp that hailed on us over the first night, so when we had enough light to do so safely, we packed up and left. The next day the news had reports of 17 campers stranded in THAT canyon due to flooding and poor drainage taking out the road. If we had "manned up", it would have been bad. Wonderful share, sir! Happy holidays and hug the fam!

Hey, I have identical twin brothers too! I love them both very, very much! They are special in that one of them was born with the cord wrapped around his neck and was a blue baby--this caused oxygen deprivation to his brain. It caused brain damage. So all his life he has been known as the "slow one" he is mentally challenged. His brother is not challenged that way, but both of them developmentally challenged and both of them learning disabled.
They loved camping so much, that they had matching sleeping bags, cooking camp gear and the works. When they were in highschool, they took a bike trip to the beach and camped out! They had a blast! They had their own one person tents too. I think my Dad made sure they had Coleman stuff, and everything rated for cold weather, just in case and waterproof too.
WE had been going to the beach for decades and camping. So my Dad took them many times by car the route they would travel. He taught them to read a map too, use a compass and most important "how to ask for directions if lost"--they had radios to speak to each other, with one of them having their ham radio license, this believe it or not is the brother who is mentally challenged!!! Dad gave them a test by allowing them a day trip to ride all the way from Gresham Oregon to Silverton Oregon to our grandparents house and then he followed about 5 miles behind them, on his ham radio keeping in contact at check points. They could do it. The beach is the other direction and just a few more miles so my parents felt that they could go on their camping trip. They were 18 years old and wanted to stretch their wings. This was way back in the mid 80's. I think if this was now, in 2024 too much bad stuff has happened to people out here on the roads--my parents would say NO. Back then it was a better, safer society, with more State police on the roads.
My brothers actually met two officers while on the road! It was a great experience for them, as the officers were impressed with their safety gear, and had all their ID. The officers contacted our parents back home to just check on them. Everything was cool. It all worked out for them. AS officers at the local police station where they were headed at their end destination a small town with camping facilities looked out for them, and when they checked in, mom and dad got a call. So it was set up for their safety and for them to have fun. They talked about this trip for years.
Sorry for the long story, but now one of them is in a nursing home with an amputated leg--and can no longer be on his own. My other brother, the one who is mentally challenged, still lives on his own today, but in my same apartment complex, just one floor down from me and my sister. The twins are now 59 years old. Me, I am 61 and disabled, writing this from my hospital bed, at home. I took in our younger sister when she became homeless after falling down a flight of stairs at her job. She had to have bilateral knee replacements! ONE of those had to be replaced! She has had her shoulder replaced too. Poor thing. She is 55. She is the baby sister.
Anyway, I love your camping videos, they are awesome! I wish I was not disabled, because I would love to try camping in an RV or something like that--as tent camping is out for me. Too strenous for me. Tried it at 50 and had a mild heart attack! Yikes! Love how you review the gear. I have plenty of church friends that go camping twice a year. So all the information I learn from your videos I can pass onto them! Thanks so much! WE have church campouts twice a year--then there are other campouts for the youth too. Unfortunately I have to sit these out. I never get enough videos or pictures, and now I can enjoy yours as well! Super, and yes they go summer, winter, fall and spring camping!!!

I often run one of those UCO candle lanterns in my tent when doing cold weather camping. It doesn't exactly heat the tent, but it does give off just enough heat to help with condensation. You need to be mighty careful with any kind of fire inside your tent, obviously. But the tent is such a small, confined space that even a tiny bit of heat can make a difference. It also makes for a very chill atmosphere, that warm candlelight inside the tent when the conditions outside suck is really nice, much nicer than the sterile glow of an LED.

This is all comfort camping. My favorite camping is with the scouts on their wilderness campout. If my pack is over 10 lbs., I've got too much gear. My favorite shelter is a 10 x 12 tarp. Lean to, floor. A storm rolled through at night...Tornado warnings, rain, thunder, lightning. I was cozy. Actually, I sleep horribly. But that storm put me right to sleep...Until the scoutmaster woke everyone up to head to the vehicles. I was amazed at how dry the tarp kept me. How well it stood up to those conditions. I just with the scoutmaster would've left me alone!

The lantern is quick and easy way to relax while getting the food going. Not the same as a campfire, just close enough. 😃

Luke, I live in the Sandhills and our weather forecast are fairly spot on. I guess because of the terrain out in Western NC with the mountains and all that it can be all over the map. Now that the weather has gotten a bit colder I think I may set up out in the woods in my backyard for an overnight just to do it once again. This old age falling apart crap is really irritating as it interferes with past hobbies.

When I had covid earlier this fall I could taste and smell just fine (though weirdly I can smell when I'm sick idk why but I can) my biggest thing was the lack of energy and just feeling cold from running a fever, plus had to drink a lot of water as I was almost always thirsty. I'm glad you got through it and I keep those dealing with it in my thoughts and prayers since not everyone gets off so easily as you said yourself. I love my Tetra large...it's not TOO different from a tarp tent, very easy to set up with a few stakes and a center pole or ridge line, yet has good features like an inner and condensation control. Also, for someone who hates that kettle, that's the second adventure you've taken it on😁

Actually I've seen it in at least 3... You remember something like that it's such a weird looking Kettle. But hey it works so to each their own. And it seems to work nicely on all those gadget stoves

It is very easy. Just test out your equipment before you go out. Don't take anything you've never put together or used at home first.
And I don't care how much you spend on one of these expensive fancy tents, always waterproof them yourself before you go out and use it. The way I look at it why take a chance.
You don't have to go all scorched Earth in use Flex Seal clear like I do but at least spray it with some silicone spray especially around the seams and the zippers

That lantern was giving me anxiety! The tent walls were blowing in really close to it 😳
I used to like windy days, until last year I was out for a day hike in a local city park, I was on a rough dirt trail, completely covered by tree canopy, and out of nowhere a freakin derecho storm kicks up, and I can hear trees crashing down all around me, branches flying, I had one fly by my head and scratched my cheek, people screaming...now I really don't like wind. Good call on going home Luke!

Been hiking and camping most of my life and still do. Lived in South Carolina for years and storms with straight line winds would knock down acres of pine trees where I would go camping and now I live in North Texas in tornado alley which scares me to death. The wind has always scared me because of what it can do. I hate it !!!. Heard about a hiker up in Washington State that went missing a couple of years ago and they found him in his hammock under a fallen dead tree. The wind is not something to take for granted. Be careful out there.
