    In this tutorial I will show you how to create a curved ribbon with text using Inkscape. I apologize for the poor audio quality. I can't seem to get the volume up, and I even tried speaking louder throughout this tutorial, which didn't help. I've ordered a much better microphone and it should be here next week. Hopefully that will improve the quality of my content. Many more are on the way! Enjoy!
    This tutorial is for Inkscape version 0.48 and is intended to teach beginners how to use the software. Inkscape is a great free alternative to Illustrator.

    Thanks for posting this video!! Awesome, easy to follow tutorial!! I did the final step different, though. Instead of lining up the text by drawing the boxes around each character, then using the envelope function, I simply wrote out my text, sized and shaped it to how I wanted it, then I used Path > Path Effects > Bend to bend the text to fit perfectly into my ribbon. Final result is looking awesome, and I couldn't have done it without you!! Thanks again!!

    At about 7:25 in the video Nick says click on the red side piece and then shift + click on the black border then hit path + difference. After following all these step about 10 times I still do not get the same result. When I hit path + difference the sides disappear entirely. Anyone else have this issue? I was thinking there is an issue with my settings or something. Thx

    I'm joining a group of people to say that after you add the stroke to the duplicated and moved-to-bottom ribbon, the subsequent Stroke to Path does not perform the same on the newest versions of Inkscape. Where yours seems to change color when you click Stroke to Path, implying something happened, in this version there is no difference. Thus the subsequent Break Apart and Union do nothing, either. As such, selecting the red side pieces and the black border, selecting Path -> Difference produces no results. Really unfortunate, because this was starting to look good for my logo!

I am having trouble when it comes to the part where you set the very bottom ribbon stroke to .15, after that you said to click on stroke to path, then to click break apart, but every time I click break apart, it says that there are no paths to break apart in the selection. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Can you help?

    Nice one! Could you please explain what exactly does the "Stroke to path - Break Apart - Union" do?

    • @LogosByNick
      @LogosByNick  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Da guš "Stroke to path" turns the outline into an editable object, then I used "Break apart" so I could unify them into 1 solid object using the "union" function. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. It's difficult to explain. Once you've been using Inkscape and playing around with it long enough, you'll start to realize how things work. That's pretty much how I learned - following tutorials and having no idea what they meant. Eventually it all clicked.

    Thanks for the tut :) A question: I made a ribbon and want to lay it over a background image, so that the whole thing looks like a badge, but for some reason, the ribbon is transparent in the white places and the background image shines through, which I don't want. I tried to turn the transparent parts into white, or do a white background for the ribbon, but none of my tries convinced me. Is there an easy way to do this? The thing is, if I try to fill it the usual way, it won't fill the whole ribbon but just changes the color of the lines.

    • @LogosByNick
      @LogosByNick  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Miriam Peters Duplicate the ribbon, then do Path > Break Apart, then Path > Union. Color that in whichever color you'd like the fill of the ribbon to be, then lower it beneath the ribbon.

    Awesome tutorial but I almost got hung up at 6:54, I'm on Inkscape 1.0 and for some reason when I do stroke to path, break apart my version refuses to ungroup the objects and do the union. Is there a setting I have wrong? I have tried some other of your tutorials and have found this a common issue. I've been following them command for command so I think it's an interface setup change I'm missing that changed in 1.0. Please let me know what you think it could be? I was able to finish once I realized this. I love learning the process you teach and am grateful to learn it but for this type of path I am wondering if there is a shortcut command or a simpler way?

    • @QuotePilgrim
      @QuotePilgrim 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Instead of making a stroke and doing the "break apart" + "union" step, you should be using the offset LPE, found through the "Path > Path Effects" menu, then do "Path > Object to path".
      If you still want to do it with the stroke method for whatever reason, the solution to your problem is in plain sight, you even said the right word in your comment, you need to _ungroup_ the objects after you do "stroke to path". There's a button in the UI and menu item for that, the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + G.
      You can also skip the "break apart" step, since the newest version of Inkscape doesn't remove the original object when you convert stroke to path, like the older ones did. That is the change in behavior that is causing the issue. It is definitely a change for the better, but does cause people to occasionally have to take different steps when following tutorials.

    • @TheSugarSystem
      @TheSugarSystem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had the exact same problem. The solution I came up with - and has been working fine with the past tutorials for now - is: before I hit stroke to path, I remove the fill, leaving just the stroke, only then I hit stroke to path and then break apart.

    • @QuotePilgrim
      @QuotePilgrim 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSugarSystem Read my comment above, I offered two different solutions, both of which take less time than what you're suggesting. Your solution takes an extra step, mine take either one less than or the same number of steps as the tutorial, depending on which one you pick.
      The first one is the more proper way of doing it with the new features (and I can pretty much guarantee is how Nick will be doing it in newer tutorials), but the second one allows you to follow these old tutorials more closely, as everything is done the same way, with only the "break apart" step being replaced by "ungroup".

    • @TheSugarSystem
      @TheSugarSystem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@QuotePilgrim So I can just skip the break apart step and go on with the following steps? That's surely way easier, I haven't tried it this way... Thanks!!

    • @QuotePilgrim
      @QuotePilgrim 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSugarSystem Yes, if you follow his exact steps, except when he says "path > break apart", you do "object > ungroup" instead, then continue with the steps from the tutorial, you'll get the expected results.
      Edit: I just checked his latest tutorial, and in it, he uses the offset LPE to accomplish the same effect, just as I predicted he would. You can still do it the "stroke to path" way if you want, but it's probably better to follow the new method moving forward.

    Hi Nick. I am experiencing something weird when using the extension. The letters do not fit sharply. They tend to twist (on one time i decided to undo everything and start all over again, the letters were completely ilegible; on another attempt the letters were far better but still twisted on the upper side of each).
    It is important to say that I've done this exercise before with no problem It was until now, when i want to use it more frequently that I'm having these problems.
    Is there any particular reason for that? What should I check before starting? How important are the nodes, rectangles and lines adjusters?

    What do you mean by not using the concept commercially?

    • @LogosByNick
      @LogosByNick  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mercyritz13 What I mean is don't resell it or try to copyright it as your own. I don't mind if you want to use it as a part of your own logo or on your own website or print collateral.

    why not use text to path

    • @LogosByNick
      @LogosByNick  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +fafaratze Do you mean put text on path? If so, it wouldn't come out right. Each individual letter would be rotated slightly in accordance to the shape of the ribbon.

      That was me expressing both:
      I have been using Inkscape as an absolute amateur and I am very impressed by what it can do and create.
      And. Wow! So good, so swift, so clearly explained. Wow. Wow. Wow. I wish I could reward it with approximately 20 +1's. Sheer appreciation and dropped jaw.
      Sorry about the language :$

      Nah I'm not offended by the language. Just didn't know what you meant by it. Anyway, thanks the compliment! Glad you liked it.
