- It's time to upgrade the stereo in our 2004 registered Porsche 996 Turbo S! In this episode, we install a top of the range Kenwood DMX-8021DABS double DIN screen with built-in Wireless Carplay and Android Auto. Raj takes us through the spec's of this Kenwood stereo, the many benefits of replacing the OEM stereo, as well as running through some of the questions you may be asking as a 996 owner.

Going to be a much better daily now, stereo upgrades are a must have! Can't wait to see what other mods are going to be added, smashed it! 🙌
Audio upgrade will be up next 👍🏽
As expected, a class up-grade. Even the most diehard Porsche owner would struggle to fit the newer OEm version when this is simply better all round. Thanks for a great episode.
If ever I’m down your way I’ll be coming in for an upgrade for my 997.1 Absolutely no one in Cumbria with your expertise
CarPlay is a game changer in an older car
100% - Carplay/Android Auto is a must have option for any car!
Great video especially comparing against the new Porsche update vs Kenwood. Marvellous info. You're single handedly getting me back into ICE for the first time since I had hot hatches in the 90s!!!
Great info! I went with the Porsche PCCM+ and DIY'd it, very little car audio experience (none tbh) but I managed it in a few hours! I've since started working on speaker replacements and have swapped all 4 mid/tweeters out for Focal 100 AC's. I've also swapped the door (lower-mids/bass) to Focal 130 AS's. That sounds really good, I'm tempted to stop there, but...
I've also aquired a Bose bass box for the rear (yours probably has it already?) and as that's going to be 8 channels and the existing amp in my car only drives 6, I'm considering using two Hertz 4-channel amp's and a separate DSP. This should really bring it alive, though, I'm an amateur :)
Just had the same Kenwood unit installed in my 2004 997.1- with the original BOSE speakers. Delighted with the outcome and revolutionised longer journeys. Cost about half the Porsche version for a much more capable system.
Great spec unit and fantastic value too!
Looks neat and not too modern/flashy. I've got same car but can't go there , I love the old Porsche system , it's part of the car, might be out of date but so is the whole car , that's what I love about it , takes me back to my 30's every time I get in it.
Looks like a nice head unit, been following your channel for a while.just upgraded my head unit from a alpine ine-w611d to a pioneer Evo sph 9 halo after watching your review video of it . really pleased with it, it's all part of a expensive sq audio system in my show standard mk4 golf GTi that I've owned for 20 years. The system was installed by Peter at pssound and has been featured on his TH-cam channel.
Thanks for watching and the feedback - The Pioneer SPH9XX is also a great unit 👍🏼
Definitely modernized the look..
Love how it looks👌
Thank you! 😊
I need to have that Porsche emblem come up on start up. I got my Kenwood and wiring adapter from CAS so may need to give you a call to get this fitted, cheers Raj!
Nice setup.
Looks great. Intrigued to see the speaker setup you go for. I’ve got the 8020dabs and need to upgrade the speakers in my 996 too!
Thanks for watching - the 8020DABS is similar spec to the 8021DABS. Audio upgrade will take place in Jan 👍🏽
Why not PCCM+!?!?!? That’s the way to go! Car deserves it!
the correct upgrade is the oem porsche pccm plus from porsche classics for a clean car like that
Would there be an option for the wiring without the head unit as a kit?
Like someone else mentioned earlier, I’d like a buttoned head unit like the Sony double din option. But having all the wires, fascia’s etc in a kit would be awesome!
Nice upgrade. I have a 2003 Cab with the stock system and am thinking about upgrading. I'm not sure why you used the adapter if you are changing the speakers also. Can you simplify it with regular speaker wires? I'm just starting to look into it, so I need some education.
Please will you do the Sub in the GR Yaris you said you would do over a year ago. Loads of GR owners are waiting, would love to see an under seat sub fitted.
what about backup cam?
Great upgrade! Looks like the rear wiper button is upside down / on the wrong side of the screen btw
Different positioning on a right hand drive car than left! On my LHD it's on the left, closest to the driver.
Can this unit be fitted to other Porsche models? I have a 718 Boxster and would like a more modern head unit, but there are other functions associated with it for the car.
what decoder did you use to integrate the fibre optics?
Do you by chance know the US version? There are so many different model#’s
How about sony xav 6000?
Frunk CD-Changer compatibility? Got a 2004 C4S with the same radio and CD-Changer
CD Changer will not be compatible with an aftermarket stereo
This vs Alpine 702?
Why not the OE Carplay ?
It’s all explained in this episode 👍🏽
IMO, 97,5% of potential customers will be better served with a OEM solution. While you pay more, it's considered to be a + when it comes to resale. An of the shelf system like that does not fit the interior and looks quite bad, this will definitely have a negative impact that will far outweigh the 700 saved. My 2 cents. @@CarAudioSecurityUK
No bluetooth on 996.
Pccm plus for $1300 no thanks, you can put a pioneer or kenwood and going to do the same for a fraction the price
buttons over a touchscreen all day, if both is available then better but... driving and a touh screen gives me anxiety.
this unit does still have a few buttons for the basic features.. Volume, mute etc
So Porsche make their cars extra light and the entertainment to system to weigh it all down, typically German
