    I had this problem on my Freelander 1, so after watching this video, I ordered the Renault 5 stat from the ebay link you supplied and fitted it a few days ago. What a difference, as the temp gauge now goes all the way up to 12 o'clock, and the cab gets warm. Thanks very much for this video. I also just found out when fitting this stat, that I have the FBH fitted, which isn't working either, I've watched your video on fixing this several times, and will get on with it when there is a dry day weatherwise !!

    Just bought a td4 and the thermostat stuck open just the other day. Nightmare. About the 10th thing that’s gone wrong since I’ve bought her but I love her too much to not give this a shot. Doesn’t look too difficult but I seem to have a different configuration of pipes with a t joint and another pipe that goes God knows where.
    Have you any thoughts or knowledge on this?
    Many thanks to your videos they’ve been invaluable this past week.

      Thanks, I hope you manage to sort it out. The pipe you need is the one that goes off to the top of the radiator, that will be the one that is the engine hot water outlet.

      @comeinhandynow  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am assuming it is the TD4 diesel engine. Get yourself an OBD2 module and s/w on your phone and read the engine temperature, that should tell you if the engine temperature sensor is working and what temperature the engine actually is. If you really can’t find any leaks (look for where water might have evaporated as well) and it consistently uses a lot of water then it would be a head gasket leak inside the engine. Check if it is smoking white smoke/steam at the tailpipe.

    • @simonepitzalis3545
      @simonepitzalis3545 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes diesel, model year 2000,
      I hope it's not a problem with the head gasket, or a leak, there are no traces of oil in the expansion tank. the loss of water is minimal, I add a glass of liquid every 100 km. with the fans on when it gets to temperature now it's even a little less. thanks I will check with OBD2. thanks very much

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odd. Where is the engine heat going? Maybe into the cabin heater matrix? Maybe some water is flowing into the main rad but it not enough to feel warm. Maybe the thermostat is a PRT (pressure release thermostat) which starts flowing more with higher water pressure at higher engine revs. You could try an extra thermostat like in the video.

    Before purchasing this item check your TD4 top hose, mine is a 2005 2.0 Td4 automatic and the top hose if a smaller diameter than the one in this video, so this thermostat won’t fit.
    Also if your thermostat housing is leaking this will not cure that, you will still need to replace the housing and thermostat.
    Finally replacing the thermostat housing on the Td4 is a fiddly job, but you DO NOT have to take the water pump and pulley belts off !!

      Thanks for your input. That’s a surprise that a variant with the same engine has a smaller hose, an alternative would be to use a wider hose for the thermostat and adapt connections to the old hose, or as you suggest replace the old original one (that do seem to be a common failing).

      @@comeinhandynow iv got the same problem, has iv got a automatic. Iv bought the thermostat already. I think it might just work with leaving the clamp off for the thermo and pushing it tight up to the reducer. Push comes to shove, il get some more pipe.. but will still work. Cheers for videos. Helped me out lots

    Cutting the clamp taking a wrist on cutting the hose and other things. Then putting the cheapest clamp. Give it a few days that car b leaking again.

      Wrong. That was 10 months ago and it is fine. No leaks. Also if you watched the video I said don’t cut all the way through the band to avoid cutting the hose and use a screw driver for shielding the edge. Also those jubilee clips were not the cheap variety (the cheap variety and poor ones are the ones with holes in the band in my experience).

    Could not insert stat in hose - no chance of it going in. Also very tough removing the hose fixing band. Dremal useless. The Renault 5 stat far too big.

      Well that is odd, as the one in the video fitted ok, tight obviously so as not to be loose. What is the part number of the thermostat you have and what is it’s diameter. I will compare it to a spare one I have here. Also what type of cutting discs did you have in the dremel? That method worked for me, with some patience even though mine is a cheap dremel type copy which is less powerful.

      @@comeinhandynow thanks / dremel’s disc was as strong as a biscuit. Bought in machine mart. I’ll check the Stat diameter. Meantime I’ve just fitted a rad cover (long ago I removed the front bumper so it’s easy to remove it on hot days. Otherwise I use the heater to keep engine temperature right! It takes four mins now to remove and replace a partially cut down bumper, much easier to keep front suspension clean and correct too.
