very imformative, thanks. I've been noticing that my coolant has gone low a few times in the last 6 months for no apparant reason. Havn't really smelled a leak from the hoses or checked under car to see if it's leaking out, but now even after filling it up my car is running hot very shortly after starting to drive. My guesses are temp sensor, thermostate or water pump. It's a piece of crap 2017 mercedes e300 and i've literally replaced almost every part. Any ideas where to start i don't want to bring it to dealer. One other thing, it also gives me trouble starting it at times. It'll just turn over but not start. Thanks.
I've had My 2011 pk ranger 4wd xlt 3.0td for about 4werks and have notice it has always got a cold bottom hose. Usualy I'd think the thermostats or waterpump stuffed ,the temp gauge sits nicely just under half no matter what I'm doing, so I'm starting to think its just that good at cooling the water as it passes through the radiator 🤷♂️. Tell me how the top hose gets hot water in it if the thermostat is stuck closed?
well the coolant from the engine block does heat the coolant from the radiator its just not circulating from engine to radiator back to engine around as it should if the thermostat stays closed
It starts fine runs good but after about 30 minutes of driving it wont accelerate passed 40 and it stays backfiring it also wont go passed 4k rpms when it starts messing up
No check engine light? Is it overheating at all? Maybe something thats causing a vacuum leak like the idle air control valve sticking open..or maybe a bad oxygen sensor..possibly a head gasket issue if its happening after heating up
It has the check engine light on because i took out the catalytic converter and put aftermarket headers and a full aftermarket exhaust system but ive had it put on for about 2 years now no issues the car recently sat for about 1 and a half months today i started driving it again and it just starting messing up also going into limp mode i did scan it about an hour ago and it had a code for the battery current sensor can that cause it to go into limp mode ? The temperature gauge on the car doesnt show its overheating it just stays half way even when it starts messing up
What would/could be the cause of an LT1 over heating when parking? The car starts overheating fast when I'm slowly manuvering (Few feet forward, few feet back etc) into a parking space Car is fine at all other times Water pump, thermostat, and coolant are all about 1 year old I bled the system Fuses and box LOOKED ok Just put on a new ac delco rad cap Unplugged the WP to test the fans and the drivers side works but NOT the passenger side Neither the AC or the heat hasn't worked for over a year btw
Does it boil over and come out the overflow or just temperature begins to rise? So it starts to overheat when theres no airflow coming through the radiator..that would be when the fans are gonna be pulling air through the radiator..do u hear em come on at all when its overheating? And if so its only that one fan? What i would do is fix the other fan if it doesnt work cause that would be a problem since the fans are what keep it from overheating at idle or stationary..if that doesnt help then i would test it for a head gasket issue..cause if combustion gases are going into the coolant it would cause it to heat up a lot faster than normal..and if it was small it would be fine while driving but more noticeable when airflow isnt cooling the coolant
No, a bad thermostat usually traps the coolant when its stuck closed, so it itll heat up fast cause of it, unless thats what its doing? U havent checked the top and bottom hose after turning off car to see if they're hot? If theyre both hot, more than likely not a thermostat issue...but those splashes of coolant could mean that the coolant is releasing somewhere under pressure...like if ur radiator cap is bad or if u got excess pressure in the system(air trapped in system or bad head gasket).. the coolant will begin to come out past the cap and into the overflow

Something doesn't make sense about your explanation. If you expect the lower hose to be cold, then it would mean the thermostat must be placed between the radiator and the lower hose, to block the hot liquid from getting into the hose. But because both hoses are blocked by the thermostat, it means initially both are cool, and then when it opens, both get hot. Or maybe it's different on that car you showed.
I personally think it's amazing how they come up with these ideas for these products
Awesome visual. Seeing one open was clutch.
Very informative and helpful. Never knew the function of a thermostat.
a great video - well made

My thermostat clearly isn’t moving but I’m over here checking 25 times because I have anxiety
What about if the temperature is goin all the way up where it should be. That could also be the thermostat?
Means that the thermostat isn’t opening properly. The fluid isn’t passing through properly enough to keep the engine cool. You need to replace it.
my top hose of the radiator is very hot and the bottom hose is cold what's wrong?

What if both hoses are cold and coolant shoots out the tank even with a cold engine ?
Then youll want to test if for a blown head gasket/head problem, i have a video for that on this same car too

So if both hoses on my radiator are hot is my thermostat not working?
It starts fine runs good but after about 30 minutes of driving it wont accelerate passed 40 and it stays backfiring it also wont go passed 4k rpms when it starts messing up
If both hoses get hot that means the thermostat is open..but when warming up the upper hose should be the only one getting warm til thermostat opens

Also i did notice that my top O2 sensor wiring was burnt because it was touching the headers my car is a 02 honda civic lx not sure if that helps
Must see thermostat video
