The backpacker trail becomes more and more luxurious, no one wants to suffer any discomfort nowadays. The slow boat 25 years ago had hard wooden bench seats and sacks of rice to sit on. At Pak beng there was one guest house which was just mosquito nets over matresses outside. Only two other foreigners were seen on the trip.
I'm Lao and have been watching your channel for a while. Excited to see you finally made it to Lao! LPB is one of my favorite destinations. So jealous. Enjoy!
Easy to get the direct bus from Chiang Rai to Huay Xai (the same bus you got in after Thai immigration) and buy the boat ticket at the pier, and pay much less. Huay Xai worth to stay overnight as well, and plenty of options to choose from for accommodation in Pakbeng. Btw the boat used to stop at the center of Luang Prabang but they moved the pier further up the river because the local tuktuk drivers need to get their share as well.
It was so hard to focus on the sunset because I’m not sure what’s better. Dylan’s dimples and amazing smile or the sunset! Totally Dylan’s dimples and smile. ❤🥰🥰😘❤️

A lot of ppl. had bad experience at that place.
I took that trip from Luangprabang to Thailand and we were only 4 people on the boat and there was a lady cooking lunch on the boat for us! And it had a bar with Beer Lao. It was so much fun 😊
Congrats on making it laos, mates. Have a great time. I am guessing you are going to meet up with your friend Paddy Doyle since he also just entered laos. Say hi! Looking forward to your adventure
I just adooored this video!! So interesting to follow you along all the way from Chiang Rai to Laos, step by step. Very funny, too! Your videos just get better and better... where will this end?? 👍👍👍
There are other boats where you pay a little bit more (£100-150 each) and they are not so crowded, although the boat you were did not look as crowded as it used to be pre covid. I would recommend Nagi of Mekong, they stop off at a couple of villages along the way and the Pak Ou caves. They also provide cooked meals and accommodation. Luang Probang is amazing, I hope you enjoy
I know it was a long and tiring trip, but I love that! I would definitely go on that. And I can't believe how nice that $12 hotel was in a small village, that's amazing.
Ahh so great to hear that you're in Laos! It's an incredible country! Let us know if you'd like any recommendations we are staying close to Luang Prabang right now in a wonderful, ethical Elephant Conservation! Maybe see you guys somewhere on the road!
We don’t know the name of the company - we just strolled past the lady in the street and she sorted us out! We paid 1600 ish baht each I think (if I remember correctly!)
What a great adventure. Sometimes you need to have a little faith that things will happen (the driver showing up and the boat booking). You were certainly well prepped for the trip. The handle on my suitcase broke last trip but I was able to have it replaced under warranty when I returned to Sydney. Cheers
In Luang Prabang, you need to search the rare species of animal at morning market. So much exotic foods to figure out what is this? So awesome place for sightseeing. Cheer!!!
This is by far the best video covering getting the slow boat! I'm planning on taking it in a few months and I've read some horror stories but this has eased my mind so much, looks like a great trip! Weird question, but do the boats have toilets on them? I'm worried about being able to hold it in for 8-9hrs 😅😅
Hello!! Thank you so much 🤗 Haha we were dreading it a bit but it was so laid back and pretty comfortable… a really enjoyable journey! Just bring enough snacks and maybe a good book 🤗 Both boats that we took had a toilet on them but maybe bring some extra wipes (bc the toilet paper did run out at one point haha!)
They didn't even say what they thought about being on a boat for 2 days. Surely that's what a lot of people want to know when they watch a video about this.
Hey guys! Hope all is well! Thanks for the Laos series! Super helpful! Question for you... I think I caught that it's best to apply for Visa online before crossing into Laos, and also you said you pre-booked the first hotel stop. Was that booked at the same time you booked the slow boat? Safe travels always!! 🙏
Hello!! Glad you’re enjoying it! We didn’t pre-apply for the visa - and it was pretty smooth passing over and paying on the spot (apparently when there’s more people it would be beneficial to apply online to speed up the process!). Once we booked the slow boat we made sure to book a hotel for our overnight stay once we knew the name of the town which is Pakbeng (but a lot of people hadn’t and hotels seemed to have representatives down where the boat arrived… although booking it beforehand gives a lot of peace of mind!)
Hello Lucy! We actually make sure that at least one of us has a local SIM card. Many countries have “data only” cards which are very affordable and means that we can always use the internet!

Haha, its definitely not the first time! Luckily it only had a couple of days left. They start to become fragile towards the end dont they? Luckily I have about 4 left! Then I need to buy more

Dyl, be careful with your insulin/diabetes supplies there. Make sure it stays safe as Laos may not even have insulin. I suppose you could always hop a quick flight to BKK worst case scenario, but better to not have to be in that situation. Enjoy Laos guys!
Looks like you had a good time. Can you help with one question?. I am doing this trip in March and cant confirm the location of the departure Pier in Huay Xai, Google maps has it in two different places Old pier & new pier) and many reviews have posted photos of same building (ticket office) and given different locations. I am not expecting to geta tour ticket so I wont be taken there, but just turn up and buy ticket in morning😢
Hi Dylan. I noticed you often bought those small bottles of energy drinks. Correct me if I am wrong. Anyway if they were energy drinks, please try to consume them less as they are very bad for your health. You guys are young, I want you both to be healthy. Sorry for being nosey. All the best to both of you.
And the slow boat looks very cool and very relaxing. The only thing I don’t like about it is that they have those gentlemen that were smoking. I don’t think they should allow people to smoke. Especially since the smoke blows all around everybody else and the fire from the ash can fall off and start a fire😮
Oh yes true - luckily they were all sort of congregating towards the front of the boat, so it wouldn’t really get close to you if you were sat further back! We agree though, it should probably be smoke free!! 🤗
