- Today we are looking at how to clean coins using suggestions from the comments on our last coin cleaning video back in March. As stated in the video we do not recommend that you clean coins as this will destroy the numismatic value of the coins. The coins picked for this video are all very common one with little collectible value.

Great video, for me when I was experimenting on cleaning my British pennies for removing patina, the best results with the minimum effort is to soak in 1/4cup of vinegar with 1tsp of salt for 5mins (soak longer if need to), you can soak 4 pennies in a 5" or 12.5cm bowl, and you will have nice copper colored pennies, change vinegar solution when it turns blueish green. I found that the pre-1925 pennies are harder to clean, I believe its because the copper content is 95%, while the post-1924 (1925-1963) they are made from 95.5% copper to minimize ghosting of King George V pennies.

Your 1900 Penny Cleaning With BRASSO was the Best Cleaner, however using a toothbrush destroyed the Metallic Shine Coating, If you had of used a CHUX Cleaning Cloth with Brasso, you would have resulted in a High Shine Finish. For Silver Coins I use SILVO and CHUX Cleaning Cloth for the same High Shine Result.
There is a less strenuous way to clean copper coins by using a barrelling machine with metal pins and a supplied soap.The results can be varied by using different lengths of time running the barrelling.The initial outlay is offset by the amount of coins you can clean at any one time.I use mine for dug up coins for displays for the farmers on who's fields I detect.

Really entertaining to see viewers ways of cleaning. And nice to see you've had your mop trimmed. As I mentioned I clean my coins using Luke warm water with baby shampoo and a chamois cloth. But not a toothbrush. I used it on a silver coin that was in dire need of a clean. Soaking the coin took a minute of soaking and a gentle rub then repeated and this was advice from a coin expert 😉

I’m going to do that because I do coin cleaning
1902 AD was the last phoenix event. A real piece of scrubbed/hidden history.
The Great seal of the USA used to be a phoenix until the 1902 event, then it was quietly changed to an eagle!
After 1902 all your present day fortune 500 companies emerged!
A terrible earthly/destructive event occurred back then. Next phoenix event is due 16th May 2040 AD and the last will be 2178 AD. This set of numbers [2178] are the only ones which can't be reduced to zero.
It helps to leave the coin to soak first before the physical cleaning.
Grease would work well because it lifts dirt and is a lubricant so no damage from scrubbing
The older pre-decimal copper coins are hard to clean, so I just leave them as be. Cupro-nickel coins and the bi-metallic £2 coins, usually buff up well with an eraser, and it can remove toning. Sometimes just a microfibre cloth will do the job. I've tried a (hot) watered down solution of white vinegar and salt, which I leave for 30 minutes. This though can affect the copper content of the coin and turn it a bit pink! 😁

I just prefer the bronze colour that it produces, rather than the hideous copper colour of many chemicals.
And it is excellent if you just want to quickly read a dull date or mint mark.

An interesting experiment would be vinegar and baking soda. This should liberate loads of oxygen and have a similar effect to Hydrogen Peroxide (Bleach)

Some good results from the various household products you used.
Similarly I have tried Bicarb cream & lemon 🍋 which has worked really well for me.

Respectfully, the bicarb and water ratios may have been a little off in your demo. I create a paste with the bicarb and gently rub with a cloth. No scrubbing with a toothbrush necessary. Thanks for giving it a go anyway. Loved seeing all the results -- giving us more options for cleaning in the future!

I use an electric toothbrush 🤣🤣 vinegar works best just leaving the coin in there for 30 mins, no scrubbing needed n no salt scratches. Might take a few dips if you want perfection but no effort needed 👍 great fun these vids

White spirit and talcum powder mixture applied with a cotton bud then polished with a microfibre cloth. The cloth looks the same colour as your fingertips after you have finished one of your coin hunts. 😱😜

I think I preferred the eraser result; it looked more 'natural' for want of a better word and one I haven't heard of before. Plus it's the least smelly!

I think the salt & vinegar works really well. I've watched one of your coin-tuber friends did a similar thin with a dirty 50p, & they left it in vinegar over night. I think work ok.

Have you ever tried cleaning copper/bronze pennies with hydrochloric/muriatic acid? It did work as it did returned to its natural reddish colour and removed most of the corrosions in the coin. However, I would not recommend it on zinc coins as it would highly react with the acid leaving a dangerous smell of acid that would probably suffocate a person and would destroy the coin entirely.
I like the salt & lemon, even though salt is very abrasive brown sauce was good as well.That Brasso looked vile👌👍

Could you please recommend cleaning solutions for corroded green copper pennies and silver without losing their value?
I actually done this on a 1902 penny, used a metal polish similar to auto sol and buffed it after to a highly polished copper surface. I actually keep it in mybl wallet so that I'm never totally skint lol

If you make another cleaning video, may I suggest using some Elbow Grease? You can buy it from the likes of B&M and Home Bargains for about £1.

You didn't try my last suggestion. I used this method to clean a collection of current coins before giving them to a nephew to go with his toy till the benefits are clean, cheap, no scrubbing and bulk. Try on some 1p and 5p coins. Tub with salt, clear distilled vinegar and boiled water. Leave for 5 mins and spread on a t towel to dry.

You should of used Tesco's own brown sauce because if it can take the skin off the roof of my mouth then it should of cleaned your coin with no problems lol

I’d say a good rubber on a non copper coin is more effective and has the benefit of not damaging the coin 👏

If you don't want to damage coins then don't clean them is the best advice - CC
Autosol brass polish is the best
On the subject of cleaning coins : coins are struck using new, clean and shiny metal. Some are even sold at a premium (proof) because of the absence of scratchers and dirt. I have always cleaned my coins with a metal polish before putting them into a collectors album. Without trying to be too gross if you found a Kew Gardens in a pile of 🐕💩, would you at least wash it with soap and water?🤔
You can do with your coins as you see fit I totally agree if you like clean and shiny coins in your album go for it. I'd definitely have to think about what to do with a Poo Gardens.... I mean Kew Gardens 🤣🤣🤣 -CC

Good morning Christopher. Try using Sterident tablets (for dentures) in water. It should be soaked for a couple a hours and the results are striking. Kiwi19 🇳🇿
