AVOID THESE 10 COIN COLLECTING ITEMS - PROCEED WITH CAUTION

In this video, I set out to identify 10 items that I would avoid purchasing when coin collecting from a resale perspective. However, it's super important to remember that fun is still at the forefront of collecting (it is a hobby, after all), so this video is more directed at people who are wondering if their items are good long term investments. I have bought tons of these items (I think 5 or so) and don't regret most of them, but I do want to caution people dipping their toes into the hobby that some items won't resell very well at all in the future. From modern commemoratives to newer proof sets to plated coins to Etsy finds to unsearched eBay lots, know what to look out for so that you don't get hurt down the road!

I've been a numismatist for 55 years. This is a good video. He's basically saying if you like the coin, if it appeals to you then buy it, but just know that you might be buying something that will bring little or no return for your money. Buying coins because you like how they appeal to you is very easy. Buying a coin that will increase in value takes lots of education and research.

My father was an amazing numismatist and I've picked up a lot from him. He's since passed but I remember all he taught me and one thing aside from making a purchase that will reward a nice return is that he also told me if it's not that important for me to make the return and I like the item I want then, by all means, buy it. It's all a matter of personal preference, not always about the money. After all, I'm not a greedy person but do purchase items with considerable return value but items I just want to have too.

I don't know that I've bought ANY coins as an investment. I collect mainly ancient coins, but have some other because I like them. My heirs can get the money when they sell.

Yes, not all collectors do it for a huge profit. I do it for both, my father was a numismatist so I've learned a lot from him but I too buy some items, not for profit but because I do like them.

Two things I think you missed. 1 I have seen " collector" coins advertised with one side having a colored commemorative. Most recently one for the moon landing, the one I actually saw appeared to be a sticker on the coin.
    2. Buying unsearched rolls, buy them from the bank. At least you won't lose any money that way.

I know they arent worth anything much over face value, but obviously they were someone's child/grandchild taking an estate collection and buying fricken cigarettes with WW2 history, and about 20$ in pennies grandma had been holding onto for 70 years. Since many modern products from the U. S. Mint have lost value, you can often buy them on eBay for less. Also, I *THINK* there might be some "sleepers" among the commemorative dollars. They hit a bit of a low point in popularity in the 1990s and thus you can find some with incredibly low mintages. For most of them, most people originally bought the proof version, and thus the uncirculated strikes have lower mintage. (My favorite is the 1994 P.O.W. silver dollar in MS70.)

My favorite way of collecting coins is finding them in my change (silver coins) or finding them when tearing down an old building or under old carpet when replacing the carpet. When I have more free time, I'd like to use a metal detector in farm fields where homesteads used to be to see if I can find any old coins. About 40 years ago, I found an Indian head penny laying on the surface of the dirt in a former barnyard behind my childhood home. It was well worn, but still cool to acquire an old coin that didn't cost anything.

Very informative video . I'm not a coin collector more of a silver collector . If I'm attracted to a particular piece I'll buy it . There are so many interesting & beautiful coins & rounds out there I've found no need in stacking. It takes more time but I rather buy 20 different pieces that I really like then a tube of all the same coin , round or bar . This is my favorite channel to get information from they have definitely saved me from making bad buys . I hope you keep the info flowing . It's impossible to learn to much . I hope every one has a blessed & healthy day ! Peace , Love & Happiness

My thought on "unsearched rolls" is the seller may not have searched them but whoever sold them to the seller certainly did. They have likely passed through several filters before reaching the seller. What does one do with hundreds of loose wheat pennies bought in unsearched rolls....perhaps sell them back to the seller at face value? Then if he doesnt search them he can honestly claim them to be unsearched and resell them.

  • @CatsMeowPaw
    @CatsMeowPaw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Never buy high premium new 'collectable' coins. Anything that is advertised as rare or limited is not going up in value. In Australia I can pick up 30 to 40 year old proof sets for about double the price when they were new. That has not even kept up with inflation.
I'm skeptical of the Lunar series from the Perth Mint too. To me this is just a cynical marketing ploy to rich Chinese. If the coin is gold or silver? Great! I will back up the truck and buy (assuming the premium is low). But if it's cupronickel? Forget it. Never. Same goes for all coins with paint on them.

There was some very good advice on this video. I do buy things that I like personally. They vary from Harris albums that I like to fill in all the way to NGG and PCGS registry sets. I don’t have to make a living off of coins. I understand the points that were made about what a coin shop pays for certain items. Personally I like to buy a proof set from every year. I have done this since I was a kid when there were silver in the sets. If you like proof sets, collect them because you enjoy them, not because they are a good investment.
Treasure Town, you keep making these videos. I am so happy to se a young, KNOWLEDGEABLE collector making intelligent videos. ❤️😎❤️

Good point. Definitely better than most investments (I'd probably buy an AU55 when I get around to it for my type collection). I'm just a little skeptical about long term value, but agree that it's by far much more solid of a buy than some of the other items seen here.

That was my nit pick too. I actually prefer older circulated coins EF or at least VF. EF shows the design of the coin quite well to me. I collect coins out my interest in history, with a circulated coin I can think of who may have carried it a hundred and fifty years ago. I am buying history not an investment. I had wondered about all these new coins from the US mint, if they were anything to bother with. To me it seems the mint is turning into a souvenir stand

I swear, prices are driving me straight out of US coins.
