What I loved is there was no audience, but he always made the crew laugh and they left it in for broadcast.

There's nothing funnier than hearing the laughter of the camera crews, remember Tiswas as well.

Not sure being gay or not has anything to do with this?

"I'm not gay but.." - what's that got to do with it?
Regardless, he was just about the most imaginative comedian ever!

What has starting the sentence with "I'm not gay" got to do with it?
You might as well start your sentence with .... "I'm not a Red Indian" / "I'm not an Aborigine" / "I'm not an Eskimo" / "I'm not an Alien from planet Mars"
      Totally pointless, and completely irrelevant.

I think you're all missing an important point, possibly due to viewing the matter through modern sensibilities and not being old enough to remember the 70s and early 80s.
In the 70s, in general, prejudices that many of us now deem unacceptable were relatively mainstream.
You had top-of-the-bill comedians, on Saturday evening prime time TV, telling overtly racist and homophobic jokes, and it was considered acceptable.
Bear in mind that homosexuality was still illegal just 10-15 years earlier.
AIDS was a terrifying death sentence and misinformation about catching it from so much as shaking hands with a gay man, meant that there was a surge of hostility against them in the early 80s.
So, given all that, the popularity of many gay comedians at the time, really flew in the face of society's prejudices.
So to say that Kenny Everett's sexuality is irrelevant, is to underestimate just what a testament it was to his comedy, that people still loved him, regardless of the societal attitudes of the day.
For people to say "I'm not gay, but I love Kenny Everett" was no small thing.
