As someone advocating for Right to Repair, this stuff peaks my interest. I think it's so cool that you can make something so old useful again, rather than throwing it out.
I'll always fix something first if I can, and these types of videos have really broadened my horizons regarding what I would consider "fixable". Love it.
It was interesting, but all my fans stop working because of the motor, and he didn't do anything to the motor, so my guess is the fan worked before he started restoring it. It was rusty and not up to modern code, but it still worked.

When I was a kid, grandparents had a similar fan. It had pretty colored ribbons tied to the inner ring of the fan guard. They blew forward when the fan was running. I have that memory.
Maybe... maybe... had to make sure idiots wouldn't stick their fingers in a fan I guess.... no its more likely that the shift to plastic was because they found ways to make stronger plastic which wouldn't shatter as soon as you turned it on. Plastic being lighter.. means a less heavy duty motor and a less heavy item overall and less power consumption
I feel the stress leave when I see parts get oiled. I used to take old grease out of the gearboxes but now, if I see the grease is still translucent, I simply re-saturate it with the best synthetic electric motor oil I could find and mix it up while in the gear box.
I love the process you use for getting the rust off of metal and I also like the Nickel plating process you do with handheld electronics amongst other things.
My Grandmother had an old fan like that one when I was very young ! When she got elderly she had alzheimer's an we had someone to come an stay with her at her home one night they up an quit an left when later we found some things were missing an the fan was one of the items taken ! Glad to see you restore one like she had ! Awesome !
I have a fan EXACTLY like this (albeit a bit smaller) that I inherited from my grandma. It has sat on top of my fridge since 2017 when I received it, so I’m excited to see a similar one being given new life! There’s life in these old items still!
The laser cleaning tool is so fine that you have to look cool to use it properly, that's why they give you sunglasses (Haters will say it's for eye protection or some bs)
I have an old plastic table fan and the oscillate function doesn’t work anymore but it is still more powerful and cools me down more than any other new fan that I’ve bought. Dunno why
I dont understand, you put ALL THIS EFFORT into the rebuild, even thought it might have been in a flood, then you DON'T clean out and replace the old grease . That is like rebuilding a car engine, then just reusing the used oil you drained out. I like the rebuild, but it is hard to overlook that.
As many have said, I was surprised that you didn't replace the old grease. Also the old crackle paint is so evocative of the era. I now want a lazer cleaner, just have to sell the car!
My grandparents had a fan like this. Only it was wrought iron and didn't have the three wire decor on the sides and top. It's a wonder us grandkids didn't lose any fingers because my grandparents used it every summer.
@@magicmanhs7718 Nah fan motors have been designed like this for about 100 years now, it's to ensure the fan during it's heaviest load (start up) has the most power going to it to ensure it starts spinning and doesn't burn out the motor as the motor is even cooled by the fan itself. So if it fails to start from a low power position it can easily over heat and burn.
I have the same fan and it still works to day. I love them because they beat any of the plastic type fans that are out there today. I will tell you these things are built to last.

Sometimes replacing or messing with stuff can cause more problems than it’s worth. Also your assuming that he dident go back latter and replace the grease.
A lot of things are iffy about this . Its almost like make th video just to get views . That laser cleaning was garbage , could have done better with a wire brush wheel , and why worry about the finish on the base but not the cowling ?? I would not trust that soldering as well , very suspect

I have little experience with fans and others, but I maybe it might be still good as long as it doesn't dry up, when the fan moves it will loosen the lube a bit more. but you may be right, I'm not sure.
Back in the day there was a thing called personal accountability, ya know that thing where you recognize the risk and take actions to prevent accidents. Ie don't run the cord so someone could trip over it or don't stick your fingers in it while it's running.
Better yes, but not safer. Companies weren't making their products with the intention of them breaking apart in a few months so the consumer will have to purchase a new one, they made their products to last
When I worked ER a gentleman came in who had his fan next to his bed blowing on him while he was sleeping. It had open blades I guess and he tossed and turned... and his hand landed in the fan and ended up quite lacerated. Nice fan... but would need to be really responsibly used.

Very good video! I loved it up until I realized you wouldn't be cleaning/replacing the insides. I was like okay. Then you put the switch handle back on. It was still so icky and dirty. I guess I was so pleased with your electronics (gaming console, and such) restorations, I thought this would be the same. Though it's not as clean a restore as I would've thought it would be, I'm still so happy to see the fan working.

You can find those rather easily at antique stores. The one I'm currently using is an Emerson 16" circa 1945. Works great too

Ever wondered why the 'High' setting is always next to off? It's to stop the electric motor stalling and burning it out! The more you know :)
It's a brushed motor right? What part receives strain when there is current running through and it doesn't rotate?
