Vintage Mining Lantern and Battery Restoration

  • I restored this vintage mining lantern from East Germany, DDR. It's very rusty and the battery is completely dead. I bought this awesome looking lantern couple months ago from a flea market.
    I started with disassembly. Interestingly the battery had leaked inside of the lantern but none of the liquid seemed to come out which was an excellent sign. all the seals were in good condition despite of the rust on the body.
    I used laser cleaning device from W2M laser. They lend me one of their devices whenever I need one. You can find more info about them from here: laser.w2m.fi/?lang=en The laser will burn old paint and rust and leave clean surface to be painted or welded etc.
    I fixed most of the dents and filled pitting from rust with filler. Then I applied base coat, and either red or black paint and finished with automotive 2K clear coat. 2K clear coat will ensure the paint will last a lifetime. A lot of times 1K paint of clear coat will not last in use or if you spill oil or gasoline on it
    .
    All the small bits were blacked with gun blue and oiled to make sure they won't rust immediately. I re-used the old wires. they were on decent condition and most importantly they were made to fit and seal the battery compartment so the liquid won't leak to the top part of the lantern when it's turned upside down.
    I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

      It's a mining lantern so it will be air tight to prevent explosion hazard if there's some flammable gas. That's also why it needs a special tool to open, I would imagine the key was kept in a safe location to perform battery charging and bulb changes so the guys using these would not be tempted to open them in the mine.

    04:17 - Bolt Issue - every man knows that pain
    06:50 - Mirror Finnish - I'm almost tempted to futz with foamoshoppe to de-dome that reflection just to see what the Odd Shed Roof looks like properly.
    08:00 - Kirk's Razor - So, the immediate question is how does that thing handle bread, ham and cheese? Or, rather, can one make a nice toastie with it?
    16:00 - Moody Blues - Just curious - is there a reason one cannot or ought not simply dunk small parts in a mug of gun blue? Is it just the mis-located coffee problem all over again?
    20:30 - End of Line - Again, just curious, with the crimpey thingies on the wirey-whatsists, might not solder do it's capillary thing with the doodad? Certain it wouldn't make a difference, can't help but think it'd form a better than needed connection. Dunno, though, just askin'.
    Lastly, how temptin' is it to swap out the dodgy batteries for a plethora of Lions, whack an industrial grade LED in there and see if you can annoy aliens? Not sayin' you should, but, still...

    Nice work, Odd Tinkering!
    When you used the gun blue on the small parts, the thing that came to mind was nickel plating. What’s the difference between the two?
    And I cheered when the Ducktor returned! I like how he just watches you clean the lens in his bathtub. He needs more camera time! 😉

    • @MaesHawkEye
      @MaesHawkEye 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the bluing agent (gun blue) is oxydating the piece, creating a protecting layer of magnetite (dark) covering the steel underneath. It's the same principle with nickel plating : covering the piece to protect it for rusting by being exposed to oxygen and water, but in the cas of plating, the piece is just being covered by a different metal that is corrosion resistant (nickel is very good for that) :)

    • @CatalystRestorations
      @CatalystRestorations 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaesHawkEye Gun bluing solution, more generally 'cold bluing', is actually a selenium dioxide or selenous acid solution that forms a black, passive copper selenide surface on ferrous materials. To form (black) magnetite (Fe3O4), you'd need to perform hot bluing or rust bluing. An actual magnetite surface provides magnitudes better protection and durability than any cold blued surface. Cold bluing is great for cosmetic black finishes though!
