I appeared on an early 80's episode of Rainbow where I impersonated Geofrrey Zippy George and Bungle. Many years later I worked with him in a panto in Woking. He was a talented professional performer and a really nice man and always fun to spend time with. I was very sad to hear of his passing. A real TV icon and is sadly missed. RIP Geoffrey ❤️
Geoffrey was a lovely man. I used to see him quite regularly in the early 90s as I was on my morning commute to uni, and he’d always stop and chat with me. A genuinely missed person and a bit of a legend.
Seriously, thank you for treating his story with the dignity he deserved (thumbnail excepted - not cool). I think he was a great, grounded human being and the world is worse off without him.
yea he was obviously quite a charismatic person that could of easily appeared in a few episodes of EastEnders or something like that now and again, I don't really buy in to the whole ' typecast' scenario, if you only ever play one TV role without a Chance of anything else then that's bound to happen.
@@Max-nz7op Totally agree with you on that bit. Saw it after I posted the comment. I guess it's clickbait, because the video is nothing like the thumbnail.
I'm not convinced that he lost his money. The video said he spent time between homes in England and Spain! Working in a supermarket or a as cab driver isn't a fall from grace - maybe he just likes to keep busy and do something, rather than sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. And fair play to him. There's nothing wrong with that.
Absolutely right. When people are famous and in the limelight, there are countless examples of those that fall from grace i.e., they lose their popularity, relevance or purpose, that sit around desperate for the phone to ring offering new roles/fame, rather than accept life for what it is. The sensible ones are those that keep their phone on standby, while getting on in another form of work, whatever it is, and if that phone doesn't ring again, well they've got a perfectly adequate form of regular income coming in to pay the bills. It doesn't sound like he lost all of his money at all - maintaining 2 properties suggests to me he had been very astute with his money and finances.
You couldn't be more right, and you describe me to a tee. I got a job stacking shelves because I was stuck indoors waiting for the phone to ring and it was seriously affecting my health, both mental and physical. Poor old Geoffrey, it really shows how life can go sometimes. One minute you're top of the tree, the next you're back in the mud. But, amongst a certain generation of British adults, he's deeply appreciated.
Not just British, I spent my teen years in New Zealand and every now and again, we'd cut class, smoke some good Coromandel green and watch Rainbow. Great days.

I'll always have respect for anyone that gets up each morning to earn a living regardless of what they do as a job to keep a roof over their head and food in their stomach. Many great memories of Geoffrey in Rainbow.
My brother became Geoffrey's neighbour for a short while because his partner's grandmother had left her her house after she passed away, so they moved in for while until they decided what to do with it. One day the door bell rang and my brother was surprised to see Geoffrey from Rainbow standing there and introducing himself as his neighbour. He asked if my brother minded whether he cut the branches off a very large tree in my brother's garden that were overhanging on to his property. My brother told him he could cut off as much as he wanted as the tree really needed removing altogether. Geoffrey then said if my brother wouldn't mind , he would gladly pay for a tree surgeon to remove the tree completely ! My brother agreed and true to his word, Geoffrey paid to have my brother's tree removed. My brother said that Geoffrey was EXACTLY how you would imagine him to be. A true Gentleman and a neighbour everyone would want . But one thing above all that stuck in my brother's mind more than 34 years later, was Geoffrey's "Pixie Boots" that he wore ! Although my brother only lived there for a few months, he was gutted when he found out he'd passed.

‘Rainbow’ used to be screened on ATV-0/10 in Melbourne in the 1970s. I clearly remember Geoffrey Hayes. I was aware that he had passed away. May he rest in peace.
Sometimes life doens't always work out quite like we planned but despite what happened he left an indelibale mark on so many people's lives. I rememeber watching it in the mid to late 70s as a young child when i would go to my Nan's house for lunch every weekday while at school. It's the whimsy and dedication of the show and Hayes' contributions that made it what it was. He might not have ever been a mega star but there's no denying he holds a special place in the hearts of millions of UK adults today.
Geoffrey was a treasure, Rainbow was an iconic children's TV show and a much loved nostalgic children's classic. It would have been nice to see more appearances of him after the show had finished airing.
Nothing wrong working in a supermarket or being a mini cab driver. I get the impression that he wasn’t financially destitute and probably would rather do something and not be bored. I’ve known a few actors and musicians. All have had to supplement their income between gigs.

No singling out of minorities, no 'token' characters and quotas, no shameless virtue signalling attempts. Just a very open and natural projection of society. Gotta give credit where it's due. I should add that i have it in good authority that most of the cast and crew were all shagging each other behind the scenes for most of the time the show ran.

I simply cannot conceive how you do 20 years on TV and come out of it skint at the end? Answer: He wasn't skint, he just _wanted to WORK!_ - Good for him.
I had a cousin with muscular distrophy.she was like a 46year old baby.she absolutely loved rainbow bless her.her music when she went was the theme song ❤
He may have been popular but it was mainly children and mothers who liked him. He was always outshone by the puppets. Who were also asked to go on other shows. Where as he didnt really get asked to on other shows. He is a generational presenter who bought joy to children throughout the 70s and early 80s. Thank you Jeffrey Hayes and the Rainbow team for making my early years of life fun and happy.
I'm glad i had my childhood when i did. I once pulled up behind Geoffrey when i was dropping someone off at Heathrow. There wasn't really time to say hello before he jumped back into his cab. Thankyou for being part of my childhood, God bless you Geoffrey.
Thank you Geoffrey for the laughs you gave me as a child watching rainbow 🌈 may you R.I.P I’m now 53 and looking back rainbow was for me like most children an iconic rememberable part of our lives.
A big part of many of our young lives. So sad to learn that times were tough for him in his last days. Along with Rod, Jane and Freddie, Rainbow and the Sooty Show were by far my childhood favourites in the 80's.
I used to see him at my local railway station in the mid 90's; he still wore brightly coloured clothes on the morning commute! Have to admit that i was a little saddened to see him there, seemed so out of place for a recognisable tv regular. There was a Sainsbury's where I grew up so perhaps that was the one where he worked. Thanks for entertaining us, Geoffrey!
I remember the theme tune…..Up above the streets and houses Bungle’s flying by. Opens up his hairy bum and sh*ts in Geoffrey’s eye. Something something something Rainbow I think that’s how it went, I forget the last line.
It's funny how this travelled across the UK. For us it was 'Bungle stuck his arse out the window and farted in Zippy's eye' (... Paint a whole world with a Rainbow!)
There's nothing wrong with working for a wage packet You do what you can to make ends meet. Hardly humbling but necessity Type casting is something that effects many people
I agree at least he did not sit at home feeling sorry for himself and feeling hard done by. It is also good for your mental health to keep productive RIP Geoffery Hayes
Those of us of a certain age, have his voice in our heads. His tone, and inflections are part of our own childhood. All those subtle life lessons and how he dealt with Zippy, was always fair but firm. He certainly painted our worlds with a rainbow.
I used to watch rainbow when my son was little….I loved Jeffrey and I’m glad I watched this video ….lm 78 now and got pneumonia when I turned 78 this year, and nearly died from Sepsis. I’m sad to hear Jeffrey died of pneumonia, xx
Rainbow, Button Moon, Wind in the Willows, Lets Pretend......makes me all warm and fuzzy thinking back on it all. What a wholesome time full of great characters and people like Geoffrey. I named my life sized teddy bear after him lol
I wasn't aware he had passed away, i know its inevitable but that leaves me feeling quite sad, thank you for such a magical set of memories for so many of us from our childhoods, from dust we come, and to dust we must return, but his energy, warmth, humility and legacy will live on in so many heart's and minds, rest well beautiful soul, thank you 🙏♥️
I loved Rainbow as a kid, remembered coming home on playgroup and watching it. When Freddy replaced Roger i was confused how different the third person looked. I still watched it when started school and often skived off and watched it at lunchtime
What a resilient man. Much respect to him. We’re all human at the end of the day and many would have let the end of such a big mainstream show ruin them. RIP Sir, you were a positive part of my childhood and I thank you.
Yeah a great man , loved by many who saw him on Rainbow! Probably more famous and much more respected then a politician. His life is like many , gradually fading away after you leave your lifelong career. Sorry to hear of his passing but what a legend RIP Geoffrey
During a home economics lesson in the early 90s, our regular teacher was away. The supply teacher put the TV on to watch a video. In between rewinding the VHS cassette, the Rainbow theme tune came on. Everyone started singing it - you could say with a lot of teenagers with broken voices singing - it was reminiscent of the Gremlins 'Snow White' cinema scene! 🌈🎶
Geoffrey who gave us so much of his time presenting such a wonderful show as Rainbow deserved better. It's sad that he couldn't have gotten a job elsewhere on TV. A waste of great talent.

Answer: He wasn't skint, he just _wanted to WORK!_ - Good for him.
Jeffery Hayes was a cherished children's television icon for generations of Irish children too.
Agreed, a legend
'Living modestly between his homes in England and Spain' 😂
Rainbow was fantastic!
I had a cousin with muscular distrophy.she was like a 46year old baby.she absolutely loved rainbow bless her.her music when she went was the theme song ❤
Great but sad story what age did she get to
I don’t believe that he had to do those jobs out of poverty, I think he just wanted to keep active.
In the video he said he has homes in London and Spain, so he was quite well off. The title is clickbait.
@@dtz1000No, he was skint. He lived locally to me, I believe in Three Legged Cross and worked at the OneStop.
i still hum the theme tune now, spontanously, when i am happy. This program brought my childhood so many happy mermories, sleep well Geoffrey.
In this day and age I’m just happy to see 1 of our beloved childhood TV stars isn’t a nonce. It’s a low bar these days 😂😂😂
I'm hoping nothing ever comes out about Pat Sharp
@ 🤞🤞🤞mate that would ruin me 😂
I loved this! I was born in 1980
Me to
God bless you sir! Rainbow was a wonderful show and great nostalgic memories.
Seemed like a nice guy. RIP Geoffrey
What a sad ending to a bloke who brought many kids happiness, growing up
Thanks so much Geoffrey and Rainbow, massive part of mine and my brothers childhoods, always remembered fondly, R.I.P.
wow that brought back memories, im 53 now and instantly remembered watching the program in the clips, great show for kids that was.
A big part of many of our young lives. So sad to learn that times were tough for him in his last days. Along with Rod, Jane and Freddie, Rainbow and the Sooty Show were by far my childhood favourites in the 80's.
Loved this show as a kid, can still remember the theme song lol!
LOVED RAINBOW AS A KID GREAT MEMORIES
RIP Geoffrey 🙏
We will not forget you.
My favourite programme. Always used to watch it ❤
I remember the theme tune…..Up above the streets and houses Bungle’s flying by.
Opens up his hairy bum and sh*ts in Geoffrey’s eye.
Something something something Rainbow
I think that’s how it went, I forget the last line.
It's funny how this travelled across the UK. For us it was 'Bungle stuck his arse out the window and farted in Zippy's eye' (... Paint a whole world with a Rainbow!)
They once did an X rated version for internal laughs but it was available on TH-cam at one point I think.
when you need to survive, you do anything so well done him, He brought a lot of joy to 70s and 80s kids
He had a greatvoice should have done audio books
Can still be done With AI!😊
Or he could have made appearances around the country and read books for children.
There's nothing wrong with working for a wage packet
You do what you can to make ends meet.
Hardly humbling but necessity
Type casting is something that effects many people
I agree at least he did not sit at home feeling sorry for himself and feeling hard done by. It is also good for your mental health to keep productive RIP Geoffery Hayes
Thank you for the memories this ignited in me.
Those of us of a certain age, have his voice in our heads. His tone, and inflections are part of our own childhood. All those subtle life lessons and how he dealt with Zippy, was always fair but firm.
He certainly painted our worlds with a rainbow.
He can't have lost that much money if he had homes in London and Spain.
"What Happened to Geoffrey Hayes, after he wisely invested a lot of money in Property?" Doesn't have the same clickbait quality.
I used to watch rainbow when my son was little….I loved Jeffrey and I’m glad I watched this video
….lm 78 now and got pneumonia when I turned 78 this year, and nearly died from Sepsis. I’m sad to hear Jeffrey died of pneumonia,
xx
Rainbow, Button Moon, Wind in the Willows, Lets Pretend......makes me all warm and fuzzy thinking back on it all. What a wholesome time full of great characters and people like Geoffrey. I named my life sized teddy bear after him lol
I wasn't aware he had passed away, i know its inevitable but that leaves me feeling quite sad, thank you for such a magical set of memories for so many of us from our childhoods, from dust we come, and to dust we must return, but his energy, warmth, humility and legacy will live on in so many heart's and minds, rest well beautiful soul, thank you 🙏♥️
We should never stop applauding icons, past or present. ❤
I loved Rainbow as a kid, remembered coming home on playgroup and watching it. When Freddy replaced Roger i was confused how different the third person looked. I still watched it when started school and often skived off and watched it at lunchtime
Apparently Rod, Jane and Freddy spent a lot of time shagging each other and the other cast and crew.
What a resilient man. Much respect to him. We’re all human at the end of the day and many would have let the end of such a big mainstream show ruin them.
RIP Sir, you were a positive part of my childhood and I thank you.
I loved Rainbow. Thank you for the show. Rip
Yeah a great man , loved by many who saw him on Rainbow! Probably more famous and much more respected then a politician. His life is like many , gradually fading away after you leave your lifelong career. Sorry to hear of his passing but what a legend RIP Geoffrey
Absolute joy as a young child watching this show .came across as a father figure .thankyou Geoffrey.
I cant but help but smile seeing these faces. Childhood memories.
Geoffrey who gave us so much of his time presenting such a wonderful show as Rainbow deserved better. It's sad that he couldn't have gotten a job elsewhere on TV. A waste of great talent.
Remember when small children watched this…? Now it’s violent tv or iPad
