  • Today we take a deep dive look into what happened with the series and what pushed fans against one another. Things turned messy when sticker star arrived and from there on everything we know about paper mario was a thing of the past. Let's review some things together.

There’s like 5 people on the sticker star side. They’re just loud as fuck.

(Late Comment) I might argue there are more, but these guys are defending it ,because as Sticker Star is old enough (~12 years) , it can perfectly be a childhood game that marked them as kids. And they get the criticism personal specially if they didn´t played the other games, which is, painfully common.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with how I feel about the fans of the newer games. I'm fine with them liking the games, but it's hard to be okay with it when so many of them try to vilify older fans, and it's almost always the nostalgia argument. Nostalgia can cloud judgment sometimes, and I get that the newer fans have had to hear "bring back the classic formula!" from others for so long, but I also think they need to realize why it's such a common thing to hear. I'm convinced that many newer fans haven't played the old games, and my history with the series helps support that.
I didn't play any game in the series until the 2010s. I was aware of some of the history with the reputation of the series, but I wanted to give the newest game a shot and see how I felt. That's when I played Color Splash. For a time, I considered it to be underrated. I also played a bit of Super Paper Mario at the time, and I dropped it pretty quickly because I didn't enjoy the platforming as much as painting the world and I was unaware about how good the story got. But then, I played TTYD, and I loved it. I played the original, and I loved that too. I went back to Super, and I'm still not a big fan, but I respect it a lot more. I tried replaying Color Splash, and I couldn’t stand playing past the first big paint star. I played Bug Fables, and not only did I like it more than TTYD, but it's also proof to me that the original game's formula still has so much room to grow. The newer Paper Mario games are just fundamentally flawed, and I didn't fully realize that until I played TTYD. Like I said, I'm fine with people liking the newer games because they definitely have some good things going for them, but if you have played all of the games in the series and still think the newer ones are better, I will never understand you.

I'm so happy TTYD is coming back. I never got to play it,but watched many LPs and got many great reviews. It is truly the best in the series and I can't wait to play this gem. I hope modern paper mario can now become a spiritual sucessor to TTYD. Considering how much work they put in the remake I have a feeling they understand their fans now finally.

Basically it is similar to the Luigi's Mansion fanbase, only it wasn't as big of a change and they did try to fix that with 3.

I am looking forward to this remake, I am someone who has played through Origami King and the Original 64 game. I do not try to spread discourse and hate, but I am no better than anyone. I don't judge others based on their opinions. But what I find difficult about fandoms is how most fandoms divide and argue over the Classic or Modern eras. It is annoying and tedious. But in the end, it was my choice to love these games and stand by them. I love Origami King, but I am not going to hate someone for disagreeing with me, that is not a good thing.

What pitchforks defending Sticker Star? That game was my first Paper Mario game, but it is just a bad game that has, like, 1 fun "level". If someone thinks Sticker Star is truly better than Thousand Year Door, they probably didn't play one of them.

Agreed, but sadly you would be surprised as I got alot of hate before for not liking it.

The thing is, people who kind of liked Sticker Star (and the later games) got fed up with fans of the first three games ranting and yelling for 8 years or so. Sure, on one hand, it's been longer and longer since one side of the fanbase got a game that caters to their sensibilities. But on the other side... it really does get tiresome to hear it all the time, and how every conversation about the series invariably devolves into grievances with the newer games. And even if you, Zero, give lip service to the idea that people can like what they like, you have to admit it's a little stressful to like a game and then listen to 8+ years of a near-universal consensus that it's one of the worst games ever.
The thing about going your whole life and hearing about why something is so bad? It builds up this monster in your mind that reality can't ever hope to match. People expect an affront to God, and they just get a subpar 3DS game. It's how the Star Wars prequels found a new lease on life, from people who gave it a shot despite all the online complaining. And surprise- they were just cheesy movies that weren't as well-written as their predecessors, nothing nefarious.
And I say all of this as a guy who only kind of liked Sticker Star and massively preferred the first three games. The rants got old fast for me, and in more recent years, more people are saying as much.

COLOR SPLASH AND STICKER STAR ARE TRASH AND STOP GIVING YOUR OPINION THAT SAYS OTHERWISE!!!!!!!!! IT'S A LOW QUALITY PRODUCT AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR OTHERWISE!!!
but if you like the games that's fine i won't bother you :))
I'm going to be honest, yes nintendo cares mostly about money (they're an corporation after all), but for paper mario in particular, that's not the main problem
the modern games aren't rushed, they aren't buggy, they aren't glitch, they are very well polished games. Their problem comes from game design decisions, which have nothing to do with wanting more money.
