People always seem to be surprised that you can like multiple versions of a song and not feel any need to prefer one over the other. And Dolly has done multiple versions of this song herself, so there aren't just 'two' versions. All of them are great.

She was on Stephen Colbert's show last night talking about her music & this song in particular. She mentioned that she sometimes sings it different ways but the original quiet version seems to be her favorite to sing according to some other interviews. And that's how most people know it too.
I like her own varied tastes in music too. She did a version of Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" for Pete's sake. She said Robert Plant & Jimmy Page approved & got a kick out of it.💙

The interview in which the singer made the remark was recorded in 2017 on the “Bobby Bones Show,” a syndicated radio talk show about country music. Parton said to the best of her recollection and records, she wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” in one day (although a tweet posted online stated that she said she did so in one night).
In the interview, host Bones asked, “Tell me about this,” before playing a portion of “I Will Always Love You.” He then inquired, “You wrote the song. How long ago?”
Parton responded, “In 1972, I think I wrote it. At the same time I wrote ‘Jolene.’ That was a good writing day.”

yeah.... love this woman. She could have been the CEO of Shell. Elvis wanted to record this song. She had nothing back then. And the colonel said: "Elvis always gets 50% pct of all the songs he sings." "That's nice," said Dolly. " But not with mine. With mine he gets 10 pct like everybody else." Isn't that great!

By the time that Whitney got around to performing it, it had long been the closing number in many of Dolly's shows. Dolly is always up for performers to sing her songs in their own way (as long as they respect the words and the copyright) but I guess seeing how so many people came to think of it as "Whitney's song" made things a little bittersweet.

Love both versions. And to clarify, Dolly did not sell the song to Whitney, she allowed Whitney to record it. Dolly gets paid everytime Whitney's song plays on the radio, every copy of the album sold, etc. So Whitney did Dolly a favor by recording the song and making the song a #1 hit again in the 90's. This song was previously a #1 in the 70's and 80's, both times by Dolly. Love your synopsis and reaction! Appreciate your videos!

Dolly Parton is a wonderful woman. She came from being dirt poor and through faith, hard work, and talent made a success of her life. She has a net worth of $500 million, but she is a national treasure who is worth so much more than the money she has earned. If you have never seen her Christmas story, you are missing out. There was not a dry eye in the house when we watched it.
To jblethal and to all the viewers and posters, Merry Christmas!! 🎄

Just some words about Dolly besides her angelic singing voice. She grew up in a small cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains with 8 or 9 siblings. Her daddy never learned to read or write, so when Dolly made it big she started a program to send EVERY child in Tennessee that would be in preschool or kindergarten a book a week. She is still doing that to this day. Then when Tennessee was hit with those horrific wildfires and so many lost everything, Dolly set up a payment plan for each person to receive $1000 every week, so “her people” could rebuild. Then recently she sent a $ 1,000,000 check to aid in the latest pharma company that just released their vaccine for Covid. So besides having a beautiful face she is truly a very special beautiful woman.

In 1966 or 67, Dolly became a regular performer on The Porter Wagner Show. They fought like cats and dogs (Dolly's words). When her contract was up, Dolly was ready to move on. Porter wanted her to stay, even going so far as to tell her she owed it to him. She wrote this song in one night hoping it would explain how she felt and how grateful she was to him. She sat him down and sang it for him. But he was just too angry. She left the show and went out on her own. Porter actually sued her for the rights to the songs she wrote while under contract with him. And he won the suit. Her songs were legally his. Years later, Porter was sick and broke and mostly forgotten, except in Nashville. He was selling all those songs that he had won. Dolly Parton bought all her songs back from him. Dolly has a beautiful heart full of compassion and forgiveness. She felt no sense of justice or revenge. After buying the songs from him, she gifted them back to him.

Dolly is a kind & generous soul as well as a wonderful singer songwriter. If you like the voices of women you might like Petula Clark singing "Love this is my song ". It was just one of many hits for her and one of my favorites when I was young. Keep up the good work we appreciate you .

She did this on live TV, in front of a live audience, decades before autotune or computer aided technology existed. She is also a prolific songwriter, a smart & savvy businesswoman, and most importantly she is an incredible philanthropist. She has a program that gives out free books to children until kindergarten age to help give them a head start on literacy & education. Back at the start of this crazy pandemic, she contributed around one million dollars towards research in finding a vaccine. She literally saved the life a young child actress on a film set they were working on). I think I'm safe in saying that Dolly is one of America's greatest national treasures. She is a living legend & beloved the world over for her music, films, TV shows & movies, etc.
Many folks assume Whitney wrote or recorded this first. One of my favorite pastimes lately is watching TH-camrs react to finding out that Dolly is the originator of this beautiful love song. :-)
Please go further down this rabbit hole with the following samples of her vast library of music: Jolene (Dolly wrote this song the same day she wrote I will always love you), Coat of many colors (her most autobiographical song), Islands in the stream (her famous duet with Kenny Rogers), Me & Little Andy (sad one!), and 9 to 5 (she wrote it for the movie of the same name, that she was starring in - it's funny).
I've always preferred Dolly's version over Whitney's. Maybe it's because I heard Dolly's first & grew up with it (I'm 53 now). To me, it's a sweeter, more melancholy song; as it was intended to be a goodbye to her then partner, Porter Wagoner. Whitney's version is more of a in-your-face powerhouse ballad, belted out with her incredible voice to better suit the dramatic film that the song was featured in - The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner & Whitney (in her first acting role). By the way, Dolly doesn't sell her songs. She retains the rights so she gets a cut of the royalties. She rarely turns people down when they ask for her permission to cover one of her original compositions. Elvis wanted to record this song and also half ownership. She said no, thank ya' to the King of Rock n' Roll, because she is a QUEEN in her own right! She's written so many songs, some of which she wrote for specific people & others to record.

Ya, Dolly is one of my early girlhood crushes. I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I ever saw. She and Nichelle Nichols were my girl crushes from back then.
    Dolly wrote & recorded this in ‘73, and was released in ‘74. It’s been a #1 hit 3x, two of which were Dolly’s (‘74 & ‘82), and the other Whitney’s (‘92.)
Dolly is a prolific songwriter, and singer. She is highly regarded by many in the industry, and general public.
Check out her book club for children, too.

Dolly makes it seem literally like she’s singing it to YOU, like it’s made exactly for you. I love Whitney’s version bec she’s a powerhouse but Dolly makes it just a little more intimate. Both are amazing in their own ways ❤️❤️❤️
