Porter Wagoner (shown in a longer version of this vid) gave Dolly her 1st big break, as the “Girl Singer” on his popular show. She intended to stay 5 years. After 7, they weren’t getting along & she wanted to leave, but he wouldn’t let her. She wrote this song to explain her feelings to him. She said he cried when he heard it & agreed to let her go, if he could produce it, which he did & she left. 5 years later, he hit her with a $3 million breach of contract suit. It settled out of court, but the friendship was broken & Porter continued to say unkind things. Later, Porter hit hard(er) times & had to sell his music catalog. Dolly quietly bought it. Sometime after, he wanted to use one of the songs, found out she owned it & had “his people call her people.” Instead of just letting him use the 1 song, Dolly gifted his catalog back to him. They made up & remained friends till his 2007 death. Dolly is said to have visited often in his final days & sing at his bedside.

Whitney Houston's version was a powerhouse and showed off her voice. Dolly's version goes straight to the heart and brings tears or chills. Whitney's version emphasized the "I" in "I will...love you". Dolly's version emphasizes the "you" in that same line.
BTW, most of us were introduced to this song through Whitney and the movie "The Bodyguard". Most of us were SHOCKED to find out, years later, that it was Dolly's song. The reason is because Dolly was country for years and a LOT of us didn't listen to country music. As a matter of fact, truth be told, most of knew of Dolly but she was considered by most to be a joke, because of the way she dressed, the hair and make-up. It's when she starred in the movie "Nine to Five" that the whole world REALLY got to know her talent and fell in love with her!!

Dolly can belt it out when the song requires it. Listen to "'He's Alive".

I prefer this version, it was #1 twice in 73-74 and 82-83 because of a Movie her and Burt Reynolds were in. This song was meant to be a sweet goodbye serenade, so I never got the belting out of the lyrics by Whitney, although it sounded great, it took away from the song's emotional goodbye and overpowered the melody, IMHO.

I am definitely with you on this one! This is a gentle, tender love song, not an anthem to be belted out like Whitney did it. Frankly, I can't bear to listen to Whitney's cover.

I saw Dolly in London at the O2 in 2011 - I've seen many concerts in my years and hers is definitely in the top 5, maybe top 3. I think above all else she should be remembered for her song writing, second for her ability to entertain and after that her talent as a singer. She wrote so many good songs. Any by all accounts, she is a wonderful person - she donated $1m to Moderna to help develop a Covid-19 vaccine.

She was a role model for girls when I grew up because of her talent and genuine kindness and caring about people. I'm 45, and she speaks to many ages.

I love Dolly’s original version here if her song, I Will Always Love You, simple & smooth, so beautiful just like Dolly herself. I do also love Whitney Houston’s version too, two talented women with two different styles. 😊♥️♥️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏻

Whitney Houston... by another level... I will just take that to mean down another floor.
I'm not saying Whitney's version was bad, it was fine...but for me... Dolly's voice rings like a crystal bell in this song... Whitney...more like a cow bell.

Whitney sounded great but Dolly wrote the song and that means something. .it sounds more real to me.

Original is sad, whitney's version is empowering. Both different but equally amazing in their own spheres.

When Whitney sang it, she was DRIVING the emotions into you. Dolly sings it and beakons to you to follow. I suppose it depends on your mood which one is preferred.

    If I should stay
I would only be in your way
And so I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you each step of the way
And I will always love you
    I will always love you
    Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I'm taking with me
    Good-bye, please don't cry
'Cause we both know that I'm not
    What you need
    I will always love you
    I will always love you
I hope life, treats you kind
And I hope that you have all
    That you ever dreamed of
    I wish you joy
    And I wish you happiness
    But above all this
    I wish you love
And I love you will always love you
I, I will always, always love you
    I will always love you
    I will always love you
    I will always love you

I personally prefer Dolly's version. In my opinion Whitney tried to do to much. If you'd of let the video go another minute you'd of seen a man come and talk to her. He was porter Wagoner. He had a country show and gave Dolly her first break. She sang on his show for 5 years I think. Her contract was up and she decided to go on her own. Porter was not happy! Tried everything to get her to stay including doubling her salary. Dolly wrote this as a goodbye to him letting him know she WAS going! He eventually understood and they remained good friends

The one thing is Dollies version was so well done Whitney didn't change a thing except the range in which she sang it. Thats a testament to Dolly in how beautiful the original was written and sung.

I love Dollys rendition of this song. She wrote this song. But I have to admit Whitney Houston can sing this song better, I cry every time I hear Whitney sang it because I always see her singing to Kevin in the Bodyguard? One of my top favorite movies, loved her, Kevin and the movie so much♥️♥️

Whitney's sounds like she's accepted the heartbreak and is moving on, thus making the overall theme an empowering experience. Dolly's is just sadder because it feels like she's still in her heartbreak period. Both are amazing though.

Although I understand what you mean, if you truly want to learn the origins of music, you'd have to go way back to Medieval Gregorian chant. 😁
