This is another favorite of mine, Steve! The back & forth between Bette Davis and Maggie Smith is hysterical; and Yes, Mia Farrow gives a wonderful performance here!!!
My favorite. Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury and Mia Farrow and with Anthony Powell's Oscar winning costumes and Jack Cardiff's glorious cinematography, what's not to love? Thanks for watching! Steve

Yes!!!! I absolutely adore this one! It stars one of my favorite underrated actresses, Olivia Hussey! And Peter Ustinov made an excellent Poirot. ❤ Another winner of a review, darling! 🥰
Dear Steve, I've been saving this gorgeous review of a gorgeous film for a day when I needed cheering up, and as my sciatica is so bad I'm considering having my legs cut off and casters fitted, today is the day. The superb cast, the superb script - everything about this film is first class and more. They even have wonderful Wayne Sleep choreographing the dancing and that hilarious tango - I saw him playing Magical Mister Mystofelees when "Cats" first opened in the West End and, like the critics, fell in love with him. The script is a marvel. From the moment we first see Linnet and how she treats her butler when he has lined up the staff to greet her, you can see what she's like: this is a girl who'd have Mrs. Danvers weeping into a hankie, and poor Jacqueline wouldn't have a chance against her. And I have such admiration for attractive actresses who, when it serves the script, make themselves look plain. Maggie Smith was a very attractive woman (look at her in "Murder by Death", which I thought fun, and "Evil Under the Sun", which I loved and which you have also reviewed) yet here she is sour and plain, while darling Angela Lansbury is grotesque and Mia Farrow is photographed and dressed at almost every opportunity to look positively skeletal. It's an absolutely perfect film, and I can't understand the snobs who criticise Agatha Christie - she always played completely fair, so that the reader (or viewer) can see and know all that Poirot knows and, if clever enough, can figure it out as he does. As a p.s. I would add that I do think there was a rapport and friendship between Maggie Smith and David Niven, because she appeared with him in "Better Late Than Never", the poignant last film he made before he died. Best wishes, Alida
We're both suffering with sciatica. It must be something in the air. Awful! As for this film, I think the great unsung heros of this film are Jack Cardiff's sumptuous & sensational cinematography and Anthony Powell's amazing costumes, which deservedly got him his second Oscar. This is my favoriute of the all-star Christies. Feel better. Steve
Oh, Steve, THANK YOU for your marvelous review of my absolute favorite Agatha Christie film adaptation. It was one of the author's own favorite "foreign stories" (for me the story is almost Shakespearean in it's structure and emotional depth), and the filmmakers did it justice, as did you, as always, with your witty, insightful (I learned things about the production I never knew) and spot on review (I agree with you, Mia Farrow was brilliant ). You are a TH-cam treasure! Michael - South Africa.
I love Mia Farrow in this role. besides her georgous look, that fit's so perfectly to her outfit and the time. her acting and presence is such a joy to watch. and I also think, she is totally underrated
Oh absolutely! I think this ranks with the great roles of her career! She's so passionate, in love and absolutely in control. You believe her every step of the way. "One must follow one's star wherever it leads....eve to hell itself." Breathtaking . Brings the camp aspect to a close and puts whole production back on track for a serious conclusion. Viva Mia! Thanks for watching! Steve"

Steve! Johnny! Kiss-kiss! Hug-hug! My evening just took a serendipitous turn toward Happytown! Love this film, incidentally. As a chubby teen with more style than courage I remember drooling over Lois Chiles, draped in bias-cut chocolate brown charmeuse, staring back at me from between the pages of Vogue's huge Fall issue - those eyes! She will always be the essence mysterious, brooding, unattainable 1970s chic.
Those Antony Powell costumes were knock outs! And she certainly filled the bill in every single one! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Thanksgiving & stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
OMG, this is the one I asked you to do! Thank you thank you thank you!! Steve, the world is a brighter place because of you! I love this one when watched along with "Evil Under the Sun", where Maggie Smith gets to be a saucy hostess frenemy of Diana Rigg.

Steve Hayes on a fabulous ensemble film. This is a favorite. Thank you Mr Hayes for your wonderful reviews. You never disappoint. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.
This is a really good movie - and faithful to Agatha Christie’s novel! Unlike the horrors we’ve seen in recent years on television that bear no resemblance to the originals! I’m sure Agatha is continually spinning in her grave ☹️ Thanks so much for another great review!!!

It’s LOVELY to see you again, Steve ❣️. What a fabulous movie with a fabulous cast and you slip in amongst them and mingle with them all so effortlessly and it brings joy to my heart ❣️. THANK YOU ❣️
Fabulous review of a fantastic film. Such a great ensemble cast. Angela Lansbury is hilarious. And Bette Davis and Maggie Smith such a wonderful double act.
Death on the Nile has one of my favorite Christie plots - really inventive and well put together. This version is just another sumptuous banquet like "Orient Express."
I absolutely love your way of presentation and movie knowledge, older movies are the best ! What it must be like working on movies like that, and in that golden age, but even in the 70 s there was that magic you don't see anymore, just my opinion... Keep doing what you're doing. Tom, Belgium.
Thanks so much , Tom. I think the thing missing is old fashioned Hollywood Glamour! Best Wishes for the Holiday Season to you and your friends in Belgium and thanks so much for watching! Steve
Steve, Always thankful for you and Johnny too, and of course your great movie review!! I 100% agree with Mia Farrow, starting off with Rosemary's Baby (a very missed and deserving Oscar nomination) and so many other wonderful performances is so unapprecatied! Thanks Ry! Check out the version on the "poirot TV series with David Suchet. It's really good with superb Brit counterparts to this version. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Thanksgiving & stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Suchet is brilliant. But the tone of the series is much darker. It's "Orient Express" is very dark and shows a whole other side of Poirot. The Miss Marple series with Joan Hickson are also brilliant.
@@davidburgess3882 I own all the Marples and most of the Suchet "Poirots". I didn't care so much for the 'Poirot" series version of "Murder On The Orient Express" .I didn't mind the darkness and liked the casting to a degree, but found the score repetitious and incessantly annoying. They had that composer for one season and his music irritated the hell out of me. However, I loved their version of "Death On the Nile'! Actually, I like them all, just some a bit more than others and I agree, both Suchet and Hickson are brilliant! Thanks for watching and Best Wishes; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 always a pleasure. Have you done "Laura"? "Murder My Sweet"? "Pick up on South Street"? "Kiss Me Deadly"? "Decoy"? "Detour"? I'll shut up now. Best wishes...
I love this one, but my favourite is 'Evil under the Sun'. Great cast again and the clothes are even more fabulous. Mainly because of Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg. Plus the main villain is much sexier than Simon McCorkindale.
I thought that one was a little hard to take but I watch it over and over just for the cast and those costumes/speedos! 😜 A favorite of mine is Ten Little Indians (1965) on the mountain top estate with Hugh O'Brian and Shirley Eaton heaving out their bosoms ... so campy.
Your review of this movie made me get the new blu ray - as its always been a favorite but wow this movie still captivates and has so many delightful moments!!! Keep the reviews coming!
Steve, thank you so much! Another perfect selection. This is one of my favorites and your review is so wonderful!!! I watch it over and over. So much better than the remake (although I love that too). And Johnny is always so nice.
I think this has actually been the first time I have ever seen someone review this movie. I enjoyed it. As a matter of fact "Death on the Nile" may very well be my favourite Poirot movie, and it is certainly one of my favourite movies starring Sir Peter Ustinov. Here in Germany it is shown on TV quite frequently together with its' successor "Evil Under the Sun". Quite unfortunately the third on these movies "Appointment with Death" gets left out rather often. And I think I have yet to see the three made for TV movies "Thirteen at Dinner", "Dead Mans' Folley" and "Murder in Three Acts" being aired on TV at all. I actually had to buy those on DVD in order to watch them. Not that it has been a bad purchase. Quite contrary actually. Movies like these aren't really made anymore. Nevertheless it is always nice to return to these classics. I think my favourite character in "Death on the Nile" is indeed Salome Otterbourne. She is so over the top and funny. Angela Lansbury played the part perfectly in my opinion.
Hello Tee-Jay! So nice to hear from someone from germany! I'm delighted! I'm a big fan of the Christies as well and love the BBC adaptations. The version of "Death On the Nile" on "Poirot" with David Suchet is worth checking out. A terrific Brit cast and done with loving care. I hope you subscribe and have lovely holidays. Please stay well, busy and stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
David Suchet did an amazing job with that show. It would be really hard for me to decide whom I like most in that role. Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov or David Suchet? They are all great. Of course there is also the new movie with Kenneth Branagh, whom I usually really like as an actor and director.... just not for this particular role and movie. But when it comes to adaptations of Agatha Christies' novels I have to admit that I have a very, very sweet spot for Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple. Those movies may not be the most faithful adaptations, but they are still very good and entertaining movies nonetheless. As a matter of fact I even named one of my dogs after Mrs. Rutherford. (Yes, I'm seriously calling my dogs Mrs. Rutherford and Mrs. Lansbury, which has earned me a very appreciated reputation of being strange. Heheh.) Oh, and by the way, I have subscribed to your channel a long time ago. I think it was around the time when you reviewed the "Creature of the Black Lagoon" movies. Or maybe it was "The Thing from Outer Space". If I remember correctly those were among the first ones I watched. It is always interesting to watch your reviews. I just generally don't comment very often, which is likely why you have never read something from me before. Heheh. Maybe I should change that. Anyways, lovely holidays to you and your loved ones as well. Stay safe and my best wishes. Tobias
@@TeeJayDesastron Actually, I've enjoyed all the actors who have portrayed Poirot - Finney, Ustinov, Suchet, Molina and Branagh. Okay, I've never seen Tony Randall in the role. But the other five - great performances from all of them.

I couldn’t agree more re Mia Farrow. Her Jacqueline de Bellefort is so amazing. She steals the film. Her situation goes right for the audience’s sympathies…and just when we think there will finally be a happy ending for her…!
Wonderful review for one of my all time favorite movies. I've probably watched this and Evil Under the Sun about 30 times each. I think it's really sad that you cannot find this movie anywhere, except by purchasing the DVD.

I felt that was about Niagara Falls and Venice. Thanks for sharing and for watching TOQ! Best; Steve
Both Angela Lansbury & Bette Davis should have been nominated for Supporting Actress Oscars for this film and were woefully overlooked. Bette said later that she believed Angela was actually going to win the Oscar. Alas, neither were nominated. There is an excellent documentary on the making of this film, where they built an exact replica of the ship inside a soundstage at Shepperton Studios in London. It was actually sitting in a tank of water, there to simulate the Nile River at night. John Guillerman was a good director for knowing how to deal with ‘star ensembles.’ He had directed THE TOWERING INFERNO and was dealing with ‘star egos’ throughout, especially Faye Dunaway’s chronic lateness. Thank God she wasn’t in this. Bette would have probably killed her! 😅 FYI: Ronald Neame also had stories to tell on how he survived THE POSEIDEN ADVENTURE which are legendary, especially the day Shelley Winters accused Gene Hackman of trying to drown her. 😅 That is one of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard her tell.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQLater, Gene Hackman claimed Shelley tried to drown him, so who the hell knows who was telling the truth. Weren’t they both method actors, so maybe they’re both telling the truth. 😅

As I walked down the center aisle of the theater when I went to see this film when it debuted, a scene with Niven shaving was on the screen. Suddenly the camera shifted from his shaving cream covered face to his feet where a cobra with its hood fully splayed lay coiled and ready to strike. I violently inhaled, sucking in what must have been most of the available air in the room. When I got to my seat, absolutely humiliated, my wife leaned over and whispered in my ear, "Took you by surprise, didn't it." Thanks for the review...it is a splendid film. (I much preferred Ustinov's "Hercule Poirot" to Finney's.)

Loved this film. The score was outstanding as well as many of the performances as well as the Oscar winning costume design . The chemistry and banter between Davis and Smith was the highlight for me . One of Bettes fine later performances ! Super
I agree with the comments about Simon McCorkindale. He was also lovely in "The Riddle of the Sands", a very different film. Angela Lansbery is also wonderful. Again, I recall her as the young saucy maid in "Gaslight".
When I went to see Liza Minnelli at Carnegie Hall, Simon and Michael York sat together behind me wearing identicale cream colored tuxedos. What did that mean exactly.?...Well, your guess is as good as mine! LOL! Steve
It always gets me when watching this film the locations are all over the place, they leave Alexandria and the next they are at Karnak which is half way up the Nile in Luxor then they mention that they what to see Abu Simbel which you would need a plane to get to which is right on the Egypt Sudan border. Aside from this the film is a good yarn and the cast are wonderful.
Weeeeeelll, that's the movies for ya! LOL! I love this too and though the locations aren't where they're supposed to be, they are gloriously photographed by the incomparable Jack Clayton. This film is simply gorgeous. Thanks for watching! best; Steve
She's mesmerizing in this. So passionate and so in tune with the style of the period. Her autobiography is one of the best. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Thanksgiving & stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
I was very young when this film came out and I had never read an Agatha Christie novel. I remember being stunned by the brilliant twist at the end. It was like tragic opera, and I almost wished the murderers had gotten away with their crime. It inspired me to read virtually every novel Christie ever wrote. Of course, with each reading, I was able to work out her formula and could guess the villain most of the time. But this never detracted from enjoying the books and the many film and TV versions since.
I love Christie. To me the lure is not whodunnit, but the premiss at the begining. Her set ups are so fabulous. Great stories and I love that they are based on character motivation, not forensics and serial killings. A few years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing "Witness For The Prosecution" on the London stage and when the twsit came a woman next to me stood up screamed! I LOVED that! You may want to check out the very well done BBC version of "Death On The Nile" done as part of the "Poirot" TV show with David Suchet a few yaers back. They did it justice and shot it on location with a briliant Brit cast. Happy SAFE, Holidays and thanks so much for watching! Best; Steve
LOL! My ex used to say; " Steven, you imersonations are great, but sooner or later, they all turn into Susan Hayward." ...Flattery got him everywhere. Consequently, I stayed with him farlonger than I should have. Thanks for watching! Steve
Thank you. So refreshing to watch a movie review by someone who actually 'gets it'! 'Death on the Nile' is most enjoyable and the cast is legendary! Although I enjoy Peter Ustinov as an actor, he is most definitely not 'Poirot'. Albert Finney was an incredible Poirot in 'Murder on the Orient Express' and, of course, the definitive Poirot is David Suchet. But thankfully, Ustinov delivers an entertaining characterization of Poirot in these films, with the real attraction being the stars playing the ensemble cast in these legendary Agatha Christie stories. I also passionately love that this film was filmed on location in Egypt at the actual ancient sites as described in the novel. Today, Kenneth Branagh's versions of Agatha Christie are almost entirely CGI and in studio.
Yes, I loathe the new Branagh versions. I also think they lack the old star power the first three had. I like portions of " Appointment With Death", but mostly for evil Piper Laurie. This one is my favorute of them all, because of the fabulous costumes by Oscar winner Anthony Powell and the four women, Davis, Lansbury, Maggie Smith and marvelous Mia Farrow, who is incredible. Steve
I'm not he only one who thinks Agatha Christie's Poirot is kind of dull, am I? Heck even Agatha Christie herself grew tired of him. I always preferred Ustinov's interpretation of this character over the paper Poirot or David Suchet.
I love 'em too. Have you ever seen " Green For Danger"? Check out my reviwe. It's one of the best whodunnits ever. Keep watching, you may be surprised! Happy Holidays!
Steve, I meant to ask you earlier-- did you and Johnny ever do a commentary video on TH-cam for a classic movie while watching it? Basically you could discuss the film, share trivia, talk costumes and sets-- stuff like that. I know it would be something of a big project, and that it might have to be a public domain flick for copyright reasons ... but I imagine that you guys would have a ball with something like that. Think it over; something to consider for 2021? Thanks. Best, Eduardo
Dear Eduardo; Thank you for your thoughts on this matter and the wonderful suggestion. It was very kind and thoughtful of you to take this into consideration. I do what you suggested when I present TOQ live. I watch a film with a live audience and comment before, after and on rare ccasions, during the screening. I don't like to break the "third wall" between the audience and he film. I find it too annoying for an audience and as an audience member to have someone commenting throughout the film. I want them to be fully committed and lost in the movie and see the art form as completely as it was meant to be seen and interpreted. I enjoyed "Mystery Science Theatre" in the 80's becuase I didn't care about the films they showed, so I didn't mind the constant and often witty interruptions. But I do care...probably too much...about the films I show on TOQ. Sorry to be long winded about this, but I wanted you to know I took your suggestion seriously. Thanks for watching and have Happy and SAFE Holidays! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I respect your principles on this 100%, Steve.
Awful!
Watched this for the first time last night. Loved it! Great review as always. And good heavens, Simon MacCorkindale was a stunner!!!

I love your impression of Bette!! It’s the best!!!
Thanks! But, don't tell her that. She'll kill me.
This is a really good movie - and faithful to Agatha Christie’s novel! Unlike the horrors we’ve seen in recent years on television that bear no resemblance to the originals! I’m sure Agatha is continually spinning in her grave ☹️ Thanks so much for another great review!!!

Fabulous review of a fantastic film. Such a great ensemble cast. Angela Lansbury is hilarious. And Bette Davis and Maggie Smith such a wonderful double act.

What it must be like working on movies like that, and in that golden age, but even in the 70 s there was that magic you don't see anymore, just my opinion...

Simon McCorkindale....woof,woof,woof!
Indeed....triple woof and then some.
Hey!😲
Down boy, down!😝

I love this one, but my favourite is 'Evil under the Sun'. Great cast again and the clothes are even more fabulous. Mainly because of Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg. Plus the main villain is much sexier than Simon McCorkindale.
Well, there you are. It's on my 'To Do' list. Happy Holidays and stay SAFE! Best; Steve
I thought that one was a little hard to take but I watch it over and over just for the cast and those costumes/speedos! 😜

Another wonderful review by my favorite TH-cam channel!!!❤❤
Oh, David! You made my day! Happy Holidays!! and Stay SAFE! Best; Steve
Heheh.)
Oh, and by the way, I have subscribed to your channel a long time ago.

FYI: Ronald Neame also had stories to tell on how he survived THE POSEIDEN ADVENTURE which are legendary, especially the day Shelley Winters accused Gene Hackman of trying to drown her. 😅 That is one of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard her tell.
Who could blame Gene for trying to drown Shelly? After all, everyone else had! ( " A Place In the Sun", " Night Of The Hunter")

I totally agree. The score was sumtuois and perefct for the lacation and the mystery aspect. Lush and ominous! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Didn’t the score get nominated for an Oscar?

Great film and another great movie review, Steve.
Hi Steve could you do APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH? LOVED THAT ONE!!!

The movies you review and discuss are classics that deserve complete focus by the viewer; I should have thought of that before making my suggestion. So do I! I couldn't get it in my suitcase, or I would have taken it with me. It was hard enough packing the dog. Oh, well... Thanks so much for watching! Happy Thanksgiving & stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
Love this movie. Have seen it about 10 times already and even though I know how it ends, I still watch it as it is that good. Enjoy!!!
That's the best recommendation any film could ever have! I feel the same. It's got everything I love! Glamour, stars. sumptuous costumes, gorgeous locations...with just a "spot of murder". LOL! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Thanksgiving & stay SAFE! Best Wishes; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Love your reviews. Agatha Christie and Hitchcock are my favorites as I am fans of both and have read all the AG novels. Love your reviews Steve. Keep it up and yes Happy Thanksgiving.
@@healingbuddy Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Thanks so much for watching! Stay SAFE! Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Can I make a suggestion: 1967's Wait Until Dark. Love it.
