When I was 11 and weighed about 82 Lbs my neighbor had been drinking all day and he told me if I could start his XR 680 I could ride it! Damn thing had supertrapps with 3 or 4 disks. He went inside to get more beer and I strapped his bike to the shade tree and cut off about 1/4 of the branches. He came around the corner taking a big swig of beer and looked just in time to see me jump. That damn kick starter went about 98% of the way down and then it backfired my knee into the handlebars and threw me off like a wild bull. Foaming Budweiser shot out of his nose and eyes and he laughed so hard he couldn't stand up. He wasn't laughing on the 5th try when I said unstrap this damn thing and dug a ditch out his driveway....gotta be careful what you say to little kids cuz you never know!! Thanks for the memories

All Torque, Horsepower #s are about the same on the 700 Maico as a Rockstar Husqvarna Limited edition 450 but torque is off the charts!! Got to ride one back when ATK did their extreme big bore 2 strokes in the 80s, the big kickstarter on their 760 was in instrument of death!! Smacked me in the right shin and tore the hide off so I went and rode the 600+ cc one, even with the skin duct taped over gauze/peroxide on my shin, the ride on that bike was awesome, dig a trench like a roto tiller and acceleration was incredible. Got it well up over 100 m.p.h. in that 1/2 mile field!

My mate had his KX 500 for sale in the 90’s. We’d both ridden it lots. I was there when two guys came round to look at it. They were older and heavier than us at the time and fancied some off road action. I was quite a good rider at the time and loved how the rear wheel wanted to overtake the front wheel in 3rd on the sandy track we went to. Seeing us skinny guys the buyer asked if it had enough power for him 😂😂 I would have loved to have been there the first time he tried to light it up in 2nd.

Young, able, willing, excellent reflexes, feels the natural sciences in his body, his gyro system is brilliant, and can control a skid while on a single wheel. It takes a healthy human to that and no machine will replace that in the next 50 years. Congratulations to the designer of that bike and the rider, they do know their heir sciences and their engineering functions. At the moment I am thinking that few people appreciate the invisible and silent functions that an engineer has to process to ensure that engine will perform as desired and also the steering mechanism to have the right geometry and on looking at 0:21 to investigate the contact point with the ground, the steering angle , the throw of those springs ,the approximate centre of gravity where all this is handled by the rider's brain through his mind operating with reference to his gyro stabilization system in his head and then his reaction to transmit all the processed data through his arms and legs to act on those control system accounting for the differential equation of the bike and also the lose gravel under his tyres, well that is a beautiful equation for any engineer and it takes a powerful computer to simulate it and here.......... a young man........... full of elegance , spirit, and an attitude does it all much faster than any computer I know of. Congratulations young man, you are a brilliant human machine and you do know it, but please look after yourself. Good luck and it was an honour to see you ride on that magnificent steed that engineers like me design for the enjoyment of other younger people.

  • @SeanHollingsworth
    @SeanHollingsworth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Starting tip:
Push the kickstarter down until the piston just clears top dead center. It will feel like a short click.
Then bring the kickstarter all the way back up, then a full assertive kick will go through without that stopping-hesitation halfway through. The engine will have two full spark ignitions when kicking it through this way.
The other benefit to starting it this way is most beneficial when firing up during a dead-engine, drop-banner start. There is not a single modern 4-stroke with the magic button that will fire up faster than a CR/KX 500.

I used to race a 1988 KX500 in the 500cc open class outside tracks. It was the fastest dirt bike I have ever been on! Wild power range that comes on linear from the bottom to the top. I used to practice in the sand dunes and it was the only bike I have ever rode that could effortlessly get on top of the sand because of the extreme wheel spin.

I've had loads of 500 2 strokes, ridden them, restored them etc. Easiest 500 i ever had to kick over was a 1983 air cooled kx500, like kicking over a 125!It was a monster of a thing. I'm from Scotland and i sold it to a family who came over from Ireland.
They were related to Laurence Spence who used to race these in the 80,s,(Great clip of him on youtube racing his, real men!) they were meant to be restoring it for him as he still rode in the senoirs, they were sure it was one of his old bikes.
Would love to know what happened to it.
I used to laugh when i rode it locally, i would kick it over and leave it idling till i put my gear on, had a young guy come up to me and say hey, there's something wrong with your bike mister?! When it idled it just went ding..... DING..... DING................. DING, DING........... DING. LOL, he thought there was something wrong with it! :-)

I feel so lucky to have been involved riding some great bikes when i was young(first bike at 14 was an rm465!) and restoring, riding them again in the last five years.
In the last five years i've had countless cr500, s, three kx500, s, Suzuki rm500(4 speed box, what were they thinking?) 1976 Suzuki rm250a, first year they were made!, another Suzuki rm465, Husky cr500 etc.
My favourite of them all was that bike i had at 14 years of age, the rm465, why? I don't think i ever got near getting that thing flat out, it just pulled and pulled and pulled, it was unbelievable!
Plus, another thing which was odd you could run it all the time with the choke full out, or just pull it out while riding, like a little nitrous shot!, it just went even quicker!
Really miss being that young lad, sticking on my gear, firing up that big yellow beast in the morning, pissing off the neighbours and just having that great two stroke smell all around me,just took off all day riding everywhere, happy days!

I have an old husky 500 2 smoker. Have it setup to burn circles on ice. If you ride it on dirt, it’s just too much to handle. The kick start is on the left which is way harder than one would think to wrap your head around. 6 gears and you will still pull up the front in 6th.

God love him my dad bought me every KX we could find used. We would rebuild it and I would blow every kid in our small town away on dated used bikes. I got a few kx 500's first at age 16 lol it tried to kill me numerous times. The 87 kx 500 I grew to love a gentle beast meaning you could go fast without really ripping it the thing was amazingly fast. Still the scariest bike I owned was a 85 kx 125 it was a 40 mph death machine.... Seriously I would put a broken back fender on when friends road because they always flipped it.
Btw Kx was always easy to mod because they was gimped from the factory..... Cr's Yz's was good too but to build a kx engine in two stroke always delivered. Reed valves, Fmf fatty, custom jetting, port polish and one or two one rear sprocket makes more power than you can deliver safely. This guy is ripping it and even he had to let off or otherwise flip it into the air 20 ft... A 450 four has amazing power delivery but its fun to ride something that can and will kill you if you get overconfident at any moment. Recently rode a friends r9 super bike "built" I said a little low on the bottom end lol. kx 500 IS Legend!

Reminds me of many years ago , a mate brought his YZ490 around for a blast . Told me to have a go , I reluctantly hopped on and hurtled off down the road ! Jeeesh , my arms were stronger than Supermans , all my energy just hanging on , pretty white knuckled by the time I got back , phew , didn`t bother ever again .

500cc 2 strokes are too fast for a woods bike, you can't even open it up to your always bogging around. A 250 is more than powerful enough for woods

Not true raced my 87 CR5OO in hare scrambles n motocross too ! I installed a moose heavyweight flywheel on it n man it made a huge difference in it !! ALOT MORE TRACTABLE POWER !!! Actually in serious woods riding I preferred my old honda 81 xr-200 or my buddy's kawasaki kdx- 200 ,light weight ,maneuverable n enough power to get you outta most situations in the hare scrambles or just deep woods trail riding !! In alot more open hare scramble tracks I used my 87 CR5OO. USING THE RIGHT BIKE FOR THE RIGHT TRACKS !!! OH AND WHEN YOU START ANY BIG BORE TWO STROKE YOU DON'T LEG STAB START IT ! YOU USE YOUR BODY WEIGHT TOO WHILE STARTING THEM WHICH MEANS COMING UP OFF OF THE SEAT . KICK IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT !! EXPERT/PRO CLASS EX - MOTOCROSS RACER MAINLY HERE BUT DID HARE SCRAMBLES NOW N THEN TO MIX THINGS UP TO ALWAYS IMPROVE MY RIDING SKILLS ..
