Kawasaki KX500 2 Stroke First Ride On a Track - Too Much Power?

  • Here is the first real ride I have ever done on my KX500. I wish I could have done a more complete moto but I kept getting stuck behind people as it was busy and I wanted to keep my camera lens clean... but there are more motos to come! This bike was a ton of fun to ride and challenging to keep a good pace going.

Upgrade the front and rear brake lines to stainless steel and get a over sized front rotor. Makes a huge difference on the stopping power. And don't forget to loctite every bolt 😂. Respring and valve the bike suspension accordingly, and it's pretty good. My kx500 suspension feels nice and plush, absorbs all the hits and impacts really nicely.

Raced & rode plenty of the Big bores back in the day. Most of the racers nowadays don't realize how much easier it is to ride the bikes of today. The new bikes don't wear you down like these big boys. Much more throttle control, finesse, and strength is needed to race these big bores. Glad I grew up in the greatest era of MX.

I've been riding since 1983 and I've only had 1 dirt bike that wasn't 2 stroke (a 2004 KXF 250) and I went right back to 2 strokes but no way on the 500. I only rode on the back of a YZ 490 once. 250 2 strokes have so much dam power that I couldn't even imagine how much power a 500 cc 2 stroke has. I wouldn't mind trying one just once though. I have a KTM 150 SX and I put a 200 SX engine in it and that's the sweet spot for me. I could see myself with a YZ 250 some day, maybe, but never a 500. I could see it maybe out in the desert or something.

I've had 2-strokes my whole life and you're right they have to be treated differently to the modern 4-strokes lol
One of the most amazing rides I've ever had was back in '92 on a A-Grade race prepped 1992 KX500. Had White Power forks & Ohlins rear shock, gold rims, Boyeson reeds and a full Pro Circuit pipe & muffler! I was 16 years old and prolly 130lbs wringing wet haha! 😂 It didn't even know I was there, just hanging on for the ride lol 🤣 What a fricken powerhouse that beast was... 🤔 💪🏼
I wonder if the young guns in 30 years will ride a current moto-x'er and wonder how we rode them fast also... 🤔 Ahhhhhh well it's prolly just a case of you get used to what you've got at the time.

Ride it like a Harley and keep the RPM'S lower by riding in a higher gear! Locktight is your BEST FRIEND!! USE IT ON EVERYTHING!!! Nut and bolt the bike after and BEFORE every ride.. This will keep MOST of your bolts attached. Let the bike float underneath you, let the bike lead. If you fight the bike, you end up tired and that causes crashes...just a few 500 2stroke riding tips from an old man that grew up riding them....from Wyoming USA 🔫🤠🇺🇸p.s stay safe and healthy everybody GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY AND stop this foolishness before it's too late...

    2 Strokes Vibe.
You just bought 500cc's worth of vibration, something you'll have to get over, it goes with the 2 Stroke Territory.
Wait until you hit Power Band, and the front wheel lifts off the ground, while the back wheel's ripping up a Roster Tail, at the same time.
    Great Video !

I used to have a KX500. Wish I never sold it. Another consideration is rebuild cost. With a KX you put in a new piston and rings if the nikasil coating on the cylinder is not out of spec. I doubt that it's more than $150. Checked internet today, Wiseco piston, rings, circlips, gaskets $99. I think you could easily get 80 hours with oil changes and clean air filter before you need new rings. Tough to tell, because I didn't have an hour meter on mine and every time I pulled the top end it all was good. Remember the KX500 owned the Baja 1000 for a decade.
I have no idea about a KX450. I think they have titanium valves, maybe springs, timing chain, cams. The internet says it's $1,300 to $1,500. But that may include crank bearings. Not cheap, that's for sure.

Do you still have it? Those can be made to je killer bikes.
Got to get way more compression damping in the shock & a stiffer spring as well. Same for the forks. I actually put an entire front end on mine from a late model kx450. I bored my swingarm axle slots to accept the bigger rear axle from the 450 as well. Installed the big brakes & axle in the rear as well. The bigger front forks & axles help tighten up the handling as well. A little less flex.
If you still have it & it has the same tune/jets, you should, bump the pilot up & make sure the airscrew isn't more than 1&1/2 turns out.

Then she threw the con rod right threw the bottom of the case.....cuz well that’s what big bore smokers do, good times though awesome bike brings back memories of the good ol days. Hey Bubba Stewart, did you set the sag on the suspension before riding it? Also your rear shock in packing because your in too low of a gear.Ride in a taller gear and use the clutch.Your not riding a 125.On those fast corners, there's no reason to downshift the bike in 2nd gear.Use the momentum to carry you through the corners. It aint rocket science.Theres no place on that track that needs to be downshifting to 2nd or 3rd gear. The big Kaw is a tractor.Lots of your intermediate and expert open class riders practice their starts in 3rd gear......You may need to take up bowling.

You had nothing good to say about your bike. If it vibrates too much (maybe there is something wrong), get a lawn mower engined bike, like what they sell now. Also, short shift the thing! it's got real power, don't make it buzzz like a one-two-five.

You know Zach, I have 3 superbikes in my garage that all do high 9's in the quarter and I can ride them hard enough to make the frames flex in corners. I feel ten feet tall and bullet proof one them........ Seeing you ride this bike, my immediate reaction is "Fvck that $#!t!!!".....
Looks like a bad combination of arm pump, carpal tunnel surgery and sheer terror-Hope the bike is everything you want it to be and that you can fix the things you don't like about it-think you're stuck with the vibration though!
