Raced & rode plenty of the Big bores back in the day. Most of the racers nowadays don't realize how much easier it is to ride the bikes of today. The new bikes don't wear you down like these big boys. Much more throttle control, finesse, and strength is needed to race these big bores. Glad I grew up in the greatest era of MX.
My dad raced a 93 kx500 in the late nineties. Thing was a beast. I would jump on it after doing some motos on my 125. It would kick my butt but it made me ride my 125 faster afterwards. Our home track was Englishtown Nj, he would do 3rd gear starts and pull hole shots all the time. Definitely keep an eye on the bolts after every ride. Get a few of the foot peg bolts for spares and locktite them in. Ours would rattle out all the time. Also we use to go through a kick starter every year bc the metal stopper on the rotating assembly would where out and cock eye the kicker which didn’t help starting. Another tip, get a tube of silicone and squeeze that sucker into the bars to help with some vibration. Good luck and hold on bc your on a rocket ship. The kx is a total different beast than the Honda

Rev it a lil less, short shift her and the chassis suspension wont get as upset off the big landings and rough stuff (we get too used to our high revving modern 4-strokes and tend to over rev other/older bikes when stepping back on em haha) 👍

I used to have a KX500. Wish I never sold it. Another consideration is rebuild cost. With a KX you put in a new piston and rings if the nikasil coating on the cylinder is not out of spec. I doubt that it's more than $150. Checked internet today, Wiseco piston, rings, circlips, gaskets $99. I think you could easily get 80 hours with oil changes and clean air filter before you need new rings. Tough to tell, because I didn't have an hour meter on mine and every time I pulled the top end it all was good. Remember the KX500 owned the Baja 1000 for a decade. I have no idea about a KX450. I think they have titanium valves, maybe springs, timing chain, cams. The internet says it's $1,300 to $1,500. But that may include crank bearings. Not cheap, that's for sure.
Nice video! I had an '04 KX500 that I bought new. That bike was really fun, but I had to be really careful. Riding in areas of both low traction and high traction could be dangerous. You would get lots of wheel spin on loose, dry ground, then hit an area that was tacky with good traction, and the bike would hook up suddenly and nearly loop out. You just had to really pay attention to the condition of the track. It was all just too much for me, so I sold it and got a YZ250, which is also powerful, but FAR easier to control and much easier to get fast lap times with.
Soon as you hit the throttle just a little bit it pulls right back up to those four strokes lol..That kinda power will hurt you if you're not careful lol..
It’s so hard to gauge speed from other people POV footage but that thing seems so nuts. It sounds like you’re puttin around and still easily clearing those jumps. It looks like we’re watching it at X2 speed but we’re not.

Do you still have it? Those can be made to je killer bikes. Got to get way more compression damping in the shock & a stiffer spring as well. Same for the forks. I actually put an entire front end on mine from a late model kx450. I bored my swingarm axle slots to accept the bigger rear axle from the 450 as well. Installed the big brakes & axle in the rear as well. The bigger front forks & axles help tighten up the handling as well. A little less flex. If you still have it & it has the same tune/jets, you should, bump the pilot up & make sure the airscrew isn't more than 1&1/2 turns out.

Next thing you should try is a KTM 380, either the SX, MXC, or the EXC. Makes about as much power as the CR500, and is much lighter with more updated suspension.
Only the first years of the 380 though they hit like a 250 with power comparable to a 500, but the last of them were essentially a more powerful 300exc super smooth and torquey alot easier and faster to ride but not as fun

My friend had a kx 500, I think it was a 1985. I’m still shaking after riding it 35 years ago. Insane scary fast. Can’t keep it on the ground
Brazil🇧🇷 I really like your motocross videos
I used to trail ride one of those, crazy!🤪
I still do. Bought in 01 still shredding Mother Earth with it. To this day still nothing like it. Man's bike
I had a 2000 wish I would have never sold it. There great bikes
Good job to anyone that stays on those things at full beans; those big bores are the spawn of the devil.
He wasnt even half beans on that bike
We need a video showing all the different bikes you own.
Wouldn’t be a long vid because I only own 2 haha
@@zachdavis3974 Wait i thought you had like 5. Dont you have a TC 250 2 stroke and a honda 250 4 stroke. And then the 500.
@@christiansoto5065 I did. Right now I just have the crf and the 500. I usually only own 1 or 2 at a time.
@@zachdavis3974 Oh ok I wish we got more videos on the TC 250 but im excited to see what happens with the 500. Btw could you somehow test ride the 2021 yz 250f Im wondering what your opinion would be on it.
Dude that bike is super bad ass I want one bad!
Yay, you posted finally!
@@tcmx712 Could be. I had a 2002 380exc, and it could be that that bike was tuned more for offroad, but it hit right from the bottom and kept pulling most of the way. Scared the crap out of you sometimes.
@@justinsavs oh yeah not denying they are beasts but the 1998 380sx was an absolute brute. I'm always on the lookout for a a 2002 380exc in good condition but they just get snapped up so quick for good reason haha
She is a rippa! I had a 1987 pretty sure that bike burnt up a few of my 9 lives😂. Then she threw the con rod right threw the bottom of the case.....cuz well that’s what big bore smokers do, good times though awesome bike brings back memories of the good ol days. Hate to say it but the vibration never goes away just that big ol coffee can swinging around insider her. Keep on ripping. 👍
Everybody gangsta until the green gojira pass by 😍🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥
I had a chance to buy a brand new one off the showroom floor back in '03. Unbeknownst to me, '03 was the last year of production for the KX 500.
Nope. '04.
Them bikes have more pull than a Hellcat! Lol
I just bought one of these and haven't ridden it yet since I've been getting it buttoned up, am I in danger? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 You're absolutely flying on that bike and it looks effortless lol
Hey Zach you should try and find someone who will let you ride their 150sx KTM. I like hearing your opinion about bikes and I’ve been looking at those bikes. Getting your opinion would be cool
I’ve been wanting to ride one for a while, I hear they’re a blast. I’ll be on the lookout for an opportunity
@@zachdavis3974 sound awesome. From what I hear, their little missiles on 2 wheels
Congrats on the bike and nice ride. Sounds a bit rough and not crisp. Might need piston and rings?
I hope 2 strokes make a comeback soon
Nice 👍
check that piston they tend to vibrate more when piston wears
Rocket ship 🚀 to 2 stroke heaven
