Cheers! That's what I was going for. I'm a huge fan of growing cities from scratch without huge freeways until it's necessary. Especially when replicating real locations.
Absolutely! Thank you! It was a lot of fun creating. :) I have a few other plans for future maps, despite running into some issues with DEMs for organizing heightmaps, but looking forward to more cool stuff.
I've been playing CS1 and now CS2 for so many years but this is probably only the second map in all that time that has inspired me to keep building. Trying to work with the contours and hills rather than just flatten things is really fun. Watching the cargo trains pass through the heavy forests and across crossings is just great eye candy. Thanks for the great work.
Wonderful! Thank you! Yeah, I was pretty pleased with the natural hills that the heightmap created. Since CS2 is way more forgiving at potential 1:1 scale. Which makes realistic topography way more plausible. Once they get everything sorted out with the editor, I might get another map out like this. The joy I would feel if we could build in the unplayable area. 🥲
I'm 40 hours into my first ever (enjoyable) map in the Cities Skylines. Thank you for all your time and hard work. You've made my first city feel like a real city. I especially like how you've divided up the land into meadows. The default maps should have had the option to start like this. So my city has naturally followed the parcels you've created. It's been fun to stick to the land and the parcels. Bravo!
Thank you! And agreed! It always frustrated me how half assed the vanilla maps are, at every level, when there's so many different easy options and geography to create and be inspired by. Granted, they probably want them to be hand made to avoid issues, but I don't see what those would be. Thank you though!
Hey man, amazing map. I love it but the river that goes up into the mountains does not have an internal or external water source and as a result of that, over time it dries up. If you manage to do an updated version of the map with this fixed I'd love to play it.
Strange, I haven't encountered this. How much time passed by? Do you mean the river in the playable area? Or the portion that's outside of the playable area? I have noticed some people have issues with other maps I've created where some people have maps flood, others have them dry up. Some strange issues happen that aren't consistent across systems. All water comes from the lake, while two rivers have a source at the border, while the very south just runs off into the unplayable area. The river that's deep into the mountains (SW corner?) only extends to the border of the playable area due to the issues surrounding water sources in the unplayable area. Turns out, if the water sources is outside of the border, river or sea, it's only determined by elevation. If your river bed is higher than other parts of the unplayable area, it'll flood the lower elevations of the unplayable area. It's really annoying especially if you want rivers at different elevations. The unplayable area quarks are more than annoying. Of course, if the water sources in the playable area are drying up, I'll be a bit more concerned and I'd like to learn from that on the next map. Though the SW river IRL is pretty dry anyways. The two lakes in this area provide the most water to those rivers. In my map, they're a bit exaggerated. Hopefully I understood that correctly!
@@RaftermanNZ It occurred because I set up a dam and large water pump in the mountains around the start of that river. So, the time it takes for the river to dry up is sped up. It would be like creating an artificial lake on a regular map with the terrain tool and then using a bunch of water pumps to drain it. Since there is no water supply into the system the levels go down. The large water pump takes the water out quite quickly. I basically got through building a near by town for the people who work at the damn and surrounding area when I realised the river was drying up and the water level was decreasing. I've spoken with others who use this map and they haven't done what I have with the water pump and have probably not run into those issues as yet. I think there is something wrong with the water source for the lake. The other rivers seem fine.
@@sdpearshaped831 Very interesting! Thanks for the heads up. I hope the issue is limited to the water pumps, and perhaps having them placed elsewhere might help for now. Perhaps it's sucking out water faster than it can spawn? I know any continuous water sources I placed were minimal, since I was having a lot of flooding issues while designing things. And the water spawners were pretty glitched forcing some shenanigans with the dev tool while designing. Hard to get real-time feedback on water behavior. At the moment the water mechanics are quite difficult to manage in CS2, so the next map I make will probably take some of this into account. Pretty hard to account for all those issues. Last map I made, people had the opposite, flooded the map, or water level rose because I set the flood level too high, spooking people that their cities would flood. Then somehow some people managed to flood the whole valley in the River Delta revamp I did. No clue how they managed that, or how long they let the simulation run. lol
@@RaftermanNZ Yeah for sure. That seems to be he case, I had the large pump and two smaller ones, so it was pumping a lot. I'll remove the two smaller ones to see if that works, but I did kind of have my heart set on it being the damn and water supply. I'll do more testing. Without question this map is vastly better to River Delta. That map sucks.
@@sdpearshaped831 Yeah, agreed! If it works, let me know. Making water work properly when working on maps is like 75% of the time spend making a map tbh. I think that's where the devs are currently experiencing delays. Testers were reporting issues with water placement.
Any chance you used the mapimagelayer mod? if so, could you potentially either send me the image you used or maybe out it on the map description on thunderstore?
I didn't use the map image layer in-game, since I couldn't get it to work while in the editor. However, when I worked on the heightmap, I used the map image reference to imprint some details into rivers and also created some slight bumps to show major road networks. At least half of this map was created through heightmap editing in photoshop before I brought the heightmap into the game. Since the DEM data for NZ was about 8m, some details were getting lost and I had to get creative. I'll attach the map overlay below, just note this link will expire in a week. This is the full resolution .TIF file, so I recommend you work it the way that works best for your system and workflow. It should fit the playable area perfectly. See link below: we.tl/t-0KGJaNeSv5 If you take this a step further and recreate some stuff, let me know! That would be super cool.
@@RaftermanNZ Can I ask how you are getting the heightmaps to import into the game? I've followed several posts on reddit for importing and none are working
@@djscriptd The modding discord map section will give you a lot of details. You need to make sure it's the correct resolution and format. Typically .png. I think it's 4096x4096. Or powers of it.

what an amazing map! exactly what i was looking for: realistic, no highways, lot of roads, trees, gentle slopes... thank you!

Unfortunately no, might just be easier to delete them as you go.

How to install this map in the steam version of the game?
