- Season 2 of Hilda dropped on Netflix this week, and while there weren't too many new creatures, the ones we met were spectacular, and the animals from season 1 were also expanded upon in amazing ways. From meeting Twig's deer-fox parents, to learning more about the life of trolls, were ready to break down and explain all the creatures that we've met as of Season 2 of Hilda.

What is your favorite creature in Hilda? Mine is the wood man, but its a hard choice with so many cool ones.
Also, sorry I didn't include elves, they just didn't seem like an 'animal' compared to the other species.

The Deerfoxes and Tantoo the Nissa are my main faves tho Woodman is also fun. Also Alfur the elf is just so much fun! He’s adorable, him and his rules, deals, and charts.

Hilda is one of my most favorite cartoons ever. I wish the Mara could've made a small appearance though.
This video forgot about the Marra. Which are interesting due to being very ambiguous as to what they actually are. Spirits or just teenagers with powers. The series has evidence for both.

In old folktales in Finland, they say the aurora borealis (revontulet) are created by or at least connected to a fire fox.
It's really old though but I still remember hearing about it, which is why I really liked that deerfoxes were connected to aurora borealis

Both the Deerfox and Wood Man are epicly designed little cuties. The wood man gives me Zelda vibes, and the Deerfox are like Pokémon.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that Sigurd was just the Swamp Man’s name rather than his species (i.e. he is Sigurd rather than a sigurd)
You are correct. Swamp man is the species and Sigurd was his name. He just didn't like to be called "swamp man" since he doesn't call the protagonista "flesh girl"
Sigurd is also a dragonkilling hero in nordic mytologi which is probably where the fearlessness medallion comes into play

Surprised I'm not seeing the Rat King mentioned anywhere. He's one of my favorite creatures/characters. I love how they took a tiny reference from the books and fleshed it out into a whole character with motives and a backstory. Would love to se more of him in season 3!
I mean, he's a collective of rats, so there's not much to that. Though the real question is what kind of otherworldly force is controlling them.

I love what they did with Gryla. She was so creepy and they did a great job keeping her suspenseful. The mask certainly helped keep her creepy

PS: you forgot some creatures such as Water Spirits, Elves, And the as of now two different types of ghosts from season one and two.
we mention many of those in the end explaining that we didn't quite see them as creatures. some are just humans who have died or gained powers, the spirits just aren't animals, and elves are just something i didn't feel the need to put in since they;re just tiny canadians.

1:06 I'm like 90% sure trolls don't innately have the ability to make light, just that that troll was a witch or knew magic
The situation with Sigurd and the vikings is actually based on the Einherjar of Valhalla from Norse mythology. Fighting to the death every day only to be resurrected and fight again the next day.
There are tow types of giants the one we saw in the first episode called gaients of old and normal giants which are just as big as some tall trees

You forgot the forest giant, which seem to just be a subspecies of giant.

The Wood Man is definitely up there for me, but I also enjoyed the Draugen. I'm a sucker for pirates.

I think the "creating artificial light" is a feature that only that specific white troll has cause I think it isn't only able to create artificial light but rather has the connection to magic like witches since as we can see they also make cloudy stuff and transferred/converted Hilda. It's my theory at least

Some of the facts in the video are already proven in the comic which happens after "The Stone Forest". Trolls do have a language, but can only be understandable by trolls. Hilda after turning into one gained the ability to communicate in their language.
Ah finally, after i watched season 2 now waiting for the next season or movie.

If I recall correctly, mythological thunderbirds are eagles or hawks (as native depictions posses a hooked beak), the pterosaur depiction is reference to cryptid thunderbirds (also frequently depicted as vultures), which is simply named after the mythical one and is pretty recent portrayal.
Hilda is the most simplest animated cartoon I've ever seen but the story is just great. The Colors, Creatures, Voice actors are just so relaxing and great to watch! (My favorite character is wood man, he's quite funny and he's voice is great for he's character!)

what about: tidemice, the body swap at the end of the last episode with the troll, the nisse abomination that victoria van gale made to enter nowhere space and the elves?
I'm Icelandic so naturally I loved the Yule Lads the most from season 2. Growing up I didn't believe in Santa but I sure as heck believed in these boys, they were always so fun and it was fun to remember all their names and what they do. I hope that Grýla's husband, Leppalúði makes an appearance or even the Yule Cat as well.
I wished they had kept in the fact that they would one by one come by and each gift children a gift every night the last 13 nights of Christmas, but I'm still glad that they had the same spirit in the show.

I love how the Nisse are depicted in Hilda. There's an old Germanic tradition where on the Winter Solstice farmers (because in myth they only lived at farms) had to make a sweet porridge with a pat of butter on top and if you don't follow their recipe exactly, they'll basically destroy your entire farm, but the Tomtes in Hilda are really chill and as a nod to the personalities of Nisses in mythology they're also just really aloof, and I just love it. I like to mess around with people with how inaccurate some of the creatures in Hilda are from their original mythologies but I love the changes that Luke Pearson made, and I think that the Nisses, especially the main Tomte that we see all the time are so funny.

I’m pretty sure the dear foxes go down to earth every year or so to mate. It would make sense, as it would be hard to start a family when your whole “town” I guess you could call it is like family. So they probably go down every year to meet new deer foxes that didn’t go (for reasons) the year before.
Edit: Movie update: It is shown in the movie that the high pitched bells does hurt the trolls ears (or whatever they have as ears) so that’s fun

I think the Time Worm is semi-sentient. I think it has the cognitive strength of Orangutans. I believe it is intelligent to monitor the timelines and clean them from alternate timeline creatures.

so quick update for anybody wanting an update, in the upcoming movie/episode Hilda and the Mountain King, Hilda is turned into a troll and can understand trolls as in talking to them
When the movie came out It was revealed That the trolls can hear themselves talk but humans can’t hear their speech

In regards to the Deer-Foxes, I speculate that the aurora we saw is a gateway to the Spirit Realm or Astral Plane
My favourites are the deer fox, the plant loving dragon, nisses, water spirit and wood man (he's cool and crazy) but i liked all the creatures in general. They're all weird and new like i've never imagend something like them .
I started watching Hilda when i decided that i need improve my imagination without knowing anything about the show, but i don't regret it and i love it!
The show is based on the Hilda book series. And since i loved the Netflix series i think i'm gonna get the books

Just a guess but I think the fear of worms is because the worms CAN bite through them even if they aren’t rock. I’m afraid of spiders which can cause painful bites even if those spiders won’t hunt me down or can’t generally cause me much harm.

I think that the deerfox come to earth to breed, it would make sence, as many animals migrate to have babies, as well as the fact we only see babies and adults, no juveniles, even in their realm we see no juveniles, meaning they have breeding seasons
I believe that in the trailer for Hilda and the Mountain King (season 3 release date: on December 30th 2021) Hilda was a troll and one of the trolls talked to her. So, I believe they do not speak human language, but indeed do speak troll language.
Twig is my favorite creature from this series though the woodman comes in a close second.
