    I used to have a Vandestat round bilge steel cutter (1967) 54 ft. Wooden mast/boom , cotton headsails , Canvas main (Heavy as hell when wet) . Still my favourite boat after many more , The feeling of safety in a blow was very reassuring & no slouch even in the light . I just delivered a 55 ft Warwick cutter to Tonga with a solid wheel house , 95% of our time was spent in the comfort of the wheelhouse fine or rain , Very relaxing & safe = Fair winds .

      If aluminum is lighter and stronger that fiber glass, what are the advantages of fiber glass boats over aluminum boats? My buddy was saying aluminum is even cheaper and quicker to build. I am not an expert, just look for knowledge.

    Beautiful boats. Nice rounded edges on the furniture and fittings. Some boats I would shudder to take it out in a seaway, one lurch the wrong way and you better be able to be medivaced because of cracked/broken ribs, or worse, from catching yourself on a sharp edge/corner.

    So interesting. I have been looking for a cross between the Amel 55 or 50 and the Garcia 45. Totally automated single-handed sailing with the advantages of an aluminum shell and retractable keel. Both have safty but I really love Amels totally protected cockpit, in-mast furling mainsail for instant reefing, and its all-electric sheet and furling system. That said I love Garcias retractable keel that gives you 3.5 feet of draft(!), duel-level living space that puts you at a 270-degree view with the nav station smack up front for night watch. Both vessels have excellent safety features, watertight bulkheads, redundancy, diesel and water storage. I think I am looking for either an Amelcia or a GarAmel :)

      Available where? If you go look in places with big tides (france, belgium, netherlands), you’ll find many centreboard or long keel boats that can fall dry : a lot of custom designs, but also production boats like ovnis, koopmans, boreal, garcia, allures, noordkapers, puffins, atlantic yachts, bekebrede designs, madaillons, van de stadt-designs, berckemeyer. There are also many boats with shallow drafts thru tandem keels and such (etap, dehler,…) they would all do well in the bahamas😊

    I am pleased to see the Orion 49, a boat which I am interest in myself. But why would you consider a swing keel a new extra feature? Does the Orion49 not have this as standard feature?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have redesigned the swing keel making it shallower at 1.3m. Also the swing part is now heavier at over 3000kilos and more than 3 m draft.

    • @karllang8282
      @karllang8282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a smart improvement. Only 1.3 m draft and increased righting moment makes it a even more attractive boat.

      Sometimes we do offer suggestions when we sail with people if they are new to their boat. But with Eeuwe - he has sailed his boat for 15 years and 10s of thousands of miles offshore. Since he also built the Statdship himself we were are interested in learning how he modified and adapted his own boat over the years. Its quite an advantage to own a boatbuilding company and he used his boat as a test bed for some new ideas.

    I like it very much Aluminium boats, as i have a 15-meter masthead cutter. Something I learned many years ago from Joe Adams, an Australian Yacht designer, the swing keel design has a significant drawback. That is if the keel is up into a hull slot the Slot or cavity for the keel when it down acts as a bucket and affects the performance of the swing keel design boat. SV. Skoiern IV

    • @Tomm9y
      @Tomm9y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think some of the boats built by KM Yachtbuilders such as the Bestevaer, can have a non retracting swing keel.

    • @blegi1245
      @blegi1245 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why for example Finot-Conq designs (Pogo 50 etc.) have no trunk in the hull and the keel just folds under the hull.

      Interesting. I have actually been aboard a Nordhavn 56MS and it was luxurious inside! Definitely a motorsailer for sure. It is much heavier and has less sail area than the Stadship or the Orion. Perhaps the Nordhavn has bit more in common with the steel Noordkaper although I think even that has a higher SA/D ratio (Sail Area/Displacement).

      It's a way to point out defects the yard will be addressing. So whenever there is something missing or that the owner doesn't like they mark it with tape and a note. Im many instances the tape marked a teeny scratch so small I didn't even see it WITH the tape.

    You don't take dogs or cats with you on a long trip! The dog has little opportunity to walk, has to do its business on the deck or wherever, and cats have to stay inside! What shoud that? On a short boat trip of a few hours, dogs are fine, but when people are on the Atlantic for weeks, dogs don't belong on the boat. Here you can see that these people only think of themselves!
