That is my boat! I fell in love with AKKA when I first saw her. We now own her.
I've owned a Benteau first 265 for 30 years and she's been a great boat and served me well. I looked at a lot of new production boats from the major players and settled on a new HR 340. It's the yacht I really desired. Based on build quality, reputation and other factors buying an HR made the most sense. I take delivery of my new boat next March and I can't wait for the handover. The boat you reviewed is in excellent shape which will ensure many safe miles at sea for her owner.
The one draw back is the post in the middle of the aft bunk. I love my boat.
We delivered an HR42E two years ago from Largos Portugal all the way across Biscay and on to Amsterdam, a superb boat and a great ride as it was one of my most comfortable trips across the Bay of Biscay. Just a hot tip for you as I have had many opportunities to chat with Magnus over the years, For every new model they design he builds one for himself first so they can test all the systems and the boat, so if any changes need to be made they can before any more are built.
Some of the best Boats built. Practical, solid, livable. We had a monsoon 31. Sweet boat. Then moved on to a Contest, but in hard competition with the HR

I learned to sail on a 42F in rough Irish and Scotish waters. Loved every minute of it and it felt safe and capable even in force 8+ and 4m waves. Worth noting that there are two designs shortcoded E and F. (as in 42x) The E boats are the older Enderlein longish keel designs where the F's are newer Frers design boats that sail a little better in low winds and upwind, but need more care in a blow

Another great review of awesome boats
A very nice boat indeed. I extensively cruised my Kelly Peterson 44’ cutter. A very similar boat. It had nearly 5’ more waterline and a knot more hullspeed. I had no significant problems in tens of thousands of miles of cruising. But have to admit, the HR pedigree is hard to beat………except for those darn teak decks!
I always thought a deck stepped mast if best for a cruising boat, because though you can't tune it like a race boat, you are safe below without a great big hole in the deck if the mast is swept away. In my albeit limited view a deck step is safety first. All my blue water boats have been deck stepped! Have I been wrong this whole time, I've never lost a mast (touch wood).

Great review! To be clear, this is the 42E. HR later made a very different 42F sloop designed by Frers (hence the "F"). Also, it's usually pronounced like "Rossi", not "Razzy."

The unexpected aspect of Hallberg Rassy is performance. This comes from Magnus Rassy's love of racing and his partnership with German Frers. So there is a difference between HR pre and post Frers. As the owner of a 48 MKII, I can say that we hardly ever use our motor! For a 42000lb bluebwater cruiser, she can knock off 200mi days comfortably. Frers also designs Swan hulls, which are performance focused, so not too surprising that HR's are fast. Some may point to HR's rig as too big for a blue water boat, but I think with the modern view of safety including speed, most will appreciate the extra sail cloth, as they pass a more traditional blue water cruiser with ease 😎

Don’t know why you would say that Center Cockpit is better for charter? When you get up to this size and bigger I love CP boats. Have owned and cruised two now. Far superior. Look and the Amel. Great protection for the helm. Unless you are racing, while cruising, I think it is not very smart to be exposed to the elements. Waves, spray, winds, skin cancer. I’ll take a CP anyway.

That is a nice review of a wonderful yacht. I’ve been fortunate to sail on a couple of significant passages around southern New Zealand when my friend owned one. You’ve suggested she’d not be a quick boat, quite the contrary, in a good breeze above 20 knots she barrels along at over 10, sometimes reaching 14. And in storm force winds as we were I was amazed at how steady and smoothly she sailed. And that dodger keeps you dry.
My only negative is that huge wheel for helming. It’s difficult to move past it both ways.
The early point about docking in heavy winds is true, but many are fitted with bow thrusters.
One feature prospective owners would want to know about too is the inclusion of in-mast furling.
The interior (in my taste) is somewhat old style, but gracious. But I was struck that for a boat of her size the interior is a little cramped. Much of that space is gathered up with a dedicated engine/plant room, navigation station and heads at each end of the boat, both with a shower and toilet.
I sailed Rasmus 35 #125 from Duluth, MN to Phuket from 1999 to 2006 and had 2 kids on the way. The boat was great and I sold it for more that I paid for it and the new owner sailed it to Europe so it completed it's circumnavigation even though I didn't. Can't say enough about how great HR boats are.

I’ve owned 2 Hallberg Rassy boats, the current one is a 2002 HR 43. There are not enough good things to say about these boats. They’re solid, extremely well built and really fun to sail. My actual boat was named the Cruising World Boat of the Year for 2003. As one reviewer said, if he was going to sail around the world, this would be the boat he’d want to be in.
Never owned a HR, but came close to buying a Rasmus once. I'd love to own one one day. We're in a Crealock 37 right now, hull#15. Love her!

it is a huge surprise to me that the hr42 was heavier than my vagabond 42…this boat was built like a tank…i am still scratching my head over the new hr40…she doesn’t seem to fit the part of global cruiser with her wide beam carried aft and dual rudder system…mostly wondering how she’d do in challenging following seas…but no doubt about the continued quality build of these boats…
The difference in displacement is all glass and resin. The Vagabond isTaiwanese with a core of 6"x 6" plywood squares. I know, I helped replace it. That couldn't happen with an HR.

Dread what the teak will look like on a boat that old.
Have a HR352 from the same year (1980). Budgeted for teak deck removal and added flexi teak deck when I bought it but haven't had to pull the trigger as the deck doesn't have any leaks and still looks quite good after replacing a few screws / plugs and sanding it.
The grain becomes quite pronounced and coarse under foot.
