    This time on Distant Shores, we take you to the Netherlands, to Enksail Yachts, to show you the interesting method being used to construct the interior of our new Orion 49 sailboat. We need to come to a decision on the wood finish for our cabinetry - we're divided on whether it should be cherry or mahogany! A tour of a wood veneer manufacturing facility helps us make a decision and we learn how veneered plywood for yachts is constructed. What wood do we choose and why? Stay tuned to find out…

    Sheryl and Paul, We found this video to be absolutely captivating. Well done! Certainly, we have totally enjoyed and appreciated the videos on the design and construction of the aluminum hull and topsides, but this was different. What a great guide you had for this video. He obviously loves his work and it shows. By the way, I always prefer mahogany over cherry. Sorry Sheryl.

    What an education on wood veneer. I think you made a wise choice for the veneer and it will greatly enhance the warmth and comfort of the below decks. Really looking forward to seeing the finished boat. Take care and sail on.

    Hey hey Paul & Sheryl... yet again... another informative and entertaining vid on your new 'beast' of a boat... Laff... anyway my favorite veneer is the one I have on my old Islander P40... the original critiques of my boat some 30 years ago were not kind... after the education gotten from this vid I feel much better about having veneer bulkheads, drawers, stowage, galley and all the other places on my boat that is veneer covered... (easy to clean)... I'm thrilled at what I have been honored to review in all of your vids on DSIV... You two are the sailing/boating GOAT... Notwithstanding: in respect to Sheryl I would have liked to seen the Cherry albeit in view of practicality... Fair Winds...

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ron! Its great having you aboard! I'll tell Sheryl you were voting cherry as well :-) I have actually built quite a few pieces of furniture with cherry years ago because I also like the colour. But it is difficult to work... planes catch on the grain since the grains are more wavy than other woods...

  • @elinicfurniture6860
    @elinicfurniture6860 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I work with wood, furniture and boats all my life. Cherry is the most beautiful, intricate wood on this planet...for a house piece of furniture. In your case your piece of furniture is 50’ large. The mahogany will give you an incredible uniformity, warmth and colour stability over the whole boat. I agree with your choice! And yes the mahogany reflection in different lights is incredible. Beautiful video. Thank you guys as always. We have a 43 GulfStar in Georgian Bay.

    Very educational - thank you. Personally I would select a lighter material. Maple? - to lighten up the room, and keep the interior as bright as possible - overall.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There will be white paneling along the hull to add brightness with the contrasting darker sapele mahogany on the bulkheads and furniture so we are hoping it will still feel quite light. We had light oak throughout the interior of our last boat so are looking something a little different this time.

    Awesome video and never seen anything like it before.
    The man definitely knows his onions(35 plus years experience) and very pleasant.
    Thank you for sharing with us such knowledge🙏 very informative video and unique💓💯👌👍👏
    I don't know much but I grew up with mahogany as in dinning table, chairs, cabinets even bed frame as I'm the lucky keeper of my grand parent's furniture which I inherited from my dad (may he rest in peace🙏 AMEN)
    3th generation and still as good as new and that's all I needed to know so I'll never need to make a choice between mahogany and any other types of wood. BUT I'll make sure Sheryl gets her favourite red cherry 🍒 in places that won't be exposed to the sun like in the bedroom...
    Would love to attend but unfortunately I can't due to my work as I'm just back from my winter holidays.
    I wish you the very BEST of LUCK and can't wait for the next stage/video.

    Thank you for a fantastic tour, which brought back memories. 40 years ago my first job after university allowed me the privilege to work extensively with veneers, sapele, kaya, teak, oak, maple, even rosewood. What a joy it must be to see your new boat in such capable hands. I am now refitting a cruising boat with cherry harvested on family land which has its own charm.

    Having worked in the superyacht industry, I have become completely turned off by the use of slow growth tropical woods being cut down to make toilet seats, though at least with veneer, a tree goes a long way. Plenty of more sustainable choices like Larch and Firs and Spruces to choose from. No one wants to talk about the environmental damage being done in these tropical forests, and before anyone says it, the "sustainable source" certificates are easily bought.

    • @troublekaliman
      @troublekaliman ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes, 100% agree! how about hemp use as well...very sustainable, could replace much of the fresh cutting of forests.

    • @patrickfitzoot
      @patrickfitzoot ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely agree, everyone yammers on about sustainably sourced....not likely, just makes buyers feel better about themselves. Also our forests are the lungs of the planet, there are other, lower impact materials that can be used as surface finishes. A channel like this, championing new technologies, should have at least have paid lip service to other materials, instead of going old world colonial in its trim out.

    • @Paul_C
      @Paul_C ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Use bamboo. Then again they are American so it will be the worst they can get: Slow growing tropical hardwoods.

    I would have liked to see more of the process. Do they start with the raw logs? How do the extract the thin veneers? How do the attach the strips of veneer together to make plywood sized sheets without a huge glue mess? Do they make the whole sandwich or do they buy ply and all they do is attach veneers?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All good questions, Capt. Mike. I don't believe they cut the veneers themselves but buy from suppliers around the world. However the do make the veneer panels with a thin layer of heat sensitive glue so there is no mess. The guy making the "book face" veneer panels was assembling the pieces and feeding them into the heat machine. I believe they just attach the veneers to plywood, not create the plywood.

    For fine furniture, it's hard to beat cherry. It tends to darken with age and in so doing becomes richer in color. It also makes fantastic end-grain cutting boards. But you made the right choice for a boat.

    Many woods darken over time. I believe you made the right choice. Hans is right about cherry. It too is a beautiful wood, but much like walnut it has many white/beige patches often in the grain. It really creates a problem because people hate the beige strips often in your chosen areas. That’s why so many uses use a very dark stain to attempt to cover/mask the beige drip blemishes.
    Mahogany often does not have those challenges (more consistent) and typically doesn’t need stain since it so beautiful in natural appearance. Not all mahogany is sapele. There are many varieties. Most are very naturally beautiful albeit most have a red tone. To quickly get an idea of raw mahogany veneer natural color just lick your finger and wipe on veneer. You will see a darker Rich brown/reddish color….. beautiful. 👍😊

    In my mind Mahogany = cutting down rainforest. I noticed you said this species is "more sustainable" not "sustainable". Between those two I'd have picked cherry. The color change is like a fine wine. Personally my favorite is alder and that is what we used in our new house 6 years ago. It's light in tone and we like the light it reflects inside during our dark winter days in the PNW.

    Those veneers are gorgeous! A really informative episode of DS-TV. The new yacht is going to look amazing, I must say it is 100% plywood and now MDF on a boat. MDF gets destroyed so easily by moisture I would keep it dedicated to the "land yacht world" --> homes. Thanks for sharing!

    This was a very interesting and informative video for your boat build and thank you for sharing this with us. If I had to choose what type of veneer to use I would choose cherry for a land-based Recreational Vehicle (RV), but I would ALWAYS go with the Mahogany for water based boats like yours will be. The inside of a Fifth Wheel RV, like our 42 footer, doesn’t get near as much sun as your boat will get traveling wherever you go so it wouldn’t change as much as it would on a boat. Can’t wait to see the panels installed in your boat.

    Wow, great education on that topic! At first, I was thinking Cherry because I just love that wood but his points were excellent and you can get such variability from light reds to blonde and it can change over time in the sun. You made the right choice! Can't wait to see it installed.

    Your boat build video series has helped us in deciding on our own aluminum boat design and build. Thanks very much!

      @@DistantShoresTV Only final decision is the material, aluminum. We have finalists in each category for, hull, rig, propulsion, systems, interior design. So a lot of work to do yet, before approaching an architect and builder.
      We are looking forward to seeing your new boat

    Great episode, and truly interesting to know the processes and the characteristics of each wood. Even if I prefer lighter colors in the boats however I think that your choice is surely the safer and wiser, given the stability of the mahogany color. Great to see the progress of your new boat. 👍

      Thanks for comments! We had light wood on our last boat - oak. We really liked it but thought we would try something different this time.

    Depends whether you like light or dark colors/interiors. The Sapele mahogany is beautiful.
    Thanks for a great video. Very informative and well done!
    Please make a video about the paint process, durability, maintenance, etc.

    Interesting and educational topic on building boat interiors and wood selection. I had my boat's interior built from Ash as a light-coloured strong wood. and 4-inch Kaury for the nav table and countertop trim. SV Skoiern IV

    Now if you use a Red Oak stain on the Sympelly Mahogany it well bring out more of the Red tones in the wood. It looks fantastic. And it gives you the color of Cherry wood. We did that in our kitchen and both bathrooms in our home. I wish I could show ya'll some pictures of the cabinets.
    Thank You for this week's video.
    Until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!

    You made the right choice! Both woods are beautiful, but mahogany is probably better for the long term. I am typing this as I sit at a mahogany typing table I made back in college days before computers. What a coincidence.
    We always enjoy the videos about the construction of our adopted boat. Thank you so much for sharing. Its the next best thing to being there.
