After Star Wars A New Hope but before Empire Strikes back existed a potential Star Wars sequel called Splinter Of The Mind's Eye. It became a book and a comic but now it's a...TH-cam...retelling. A Star Wars motion comic if you will. Joy.

Something tells me Darth Vader wouldn't be so greatly remembered as one of the best villains ever if they had released a movie where he was defeated by tripping over his own severed arm. Darth Vader - defeated by clumsiness.
Don't forget when he just cowardly ran away from a might like the villain of a saturday morning cartoon.
maybe...still meme worthy tho
He took a blaster in the back and survived, he would still be fine lol so long as he helped his underlings survive
He would be clumsy as he is stupid.
I wonder if the comic depicted one of the more controversial things from the book--the Force Grenade. During the final battle, Darthie bends over and grunts like he's got to poo, then stands up with a ball of light in his hand--a turd made of 100% Force Concentrate--and chucks it at Luke in an attempt to blow him up. Seems like an actual grenade would be simpler.
...Oh, and also the scene in which Luke and Leia are camped out for the night and Luke, taking watch, looks Leia over and *has to remind himself not to jump her while she's asleep*. Even if they DIDN'T turn out to be brother and sister, that's MEGA-EWWWWW.
Oh god, I laughed waaaaaay too hard at Vader tripping over his own arm. Whooooooooo boy. What a riot. My stomach hurts now.
I'm glad I'm. It the only one who laughed way to hard at this.
Yes indeed! Inseart Goofy scream here. :D
I never read the graphic novel, but I read the novelization. In the novelization, I don't think he trips over his arm (although, I admit, it's been a LONG time since I read it), although I'm not sure the original reason for him falling is any less ridiculous - if I recall correctly, Vader is basically so messed up due to his fight with Luke (after all, his arm did just get cut off), that he can't even walk a straight line - he's basically staggering toward Luke to finish him off, zig-zagging his way toward him, and his zig-zagging simply leads him to fall into the hole...like a drunk.
When I saw Vader tripping over his arm, I thought "Who the fuck wrote this....George Lucas? Oh wait......"
Syria Sirlay I was dead af when the admiral guy called Vader and was like "so we have someone who looks exactly like Princess Leia" and Vader was all like "Don't... fuck this up!" 😂🔫
"Mof" was an old Dutch slang for a German during WWII, so I always just read "Grand Mof" as "Big Nazi".
Gardow he basically is 😂. Love this
That's pretty interesting, considering "vader" is Dutch for "father".
@Disent Design Shh! Don't say another word The Mouse has ears EVERYWHERE!!
@@lvitacahill2383 its close to father but not exactly
Memu no the word ‘vader’ in The Netherlands means father
7:15 The video editing is INSANELY GOOD! It's so fluid and sync'd, and includes little animations to sell action, as well as SFX, movie music and clips. Really top drawer stuff. Great job Ben 👍
Ah I miss this style of CoG. It's amazing.
I second that 😎👍🏻 Great work!
Keep in mind, if this were canon, Luke's entire Jedi training up to this point would have consisted of about 2 hours with Obi-wan on the Falcon getting zapped by that little laser ball thing. And Obi-wan never told him anything about Jedi lifting things with their minds. So as far as Luke is aware, the Force is just being able to wave your hands around and make stupid people do things for you.
So, Lucas ended doing 'The Empire Strikes Back' instead of this materpiece?, pfff, what a dissapointment...

Mr Sunday's videos have been just superb recently! Those editors are great!
he pays us editors with food.... we're locked in his basement forced to edit...help...
That wasn't even intentional...Imma comedian and didn't know.
Can I just say this video is fantastic?
The editing in several ways -- lining up with the narrators, the pictures, the animated comic bits, the little bonus things like music and movie clips added for more comedic effect.
Speaking of comedic effect, the timing is flawless. The talk about the book is hilarious by itself, but adding all these other nifty parts makes it so freaking perfect.
It's perfect comedy in my book. I love when the dialogue is filled in with James' narration
I read "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" when it came out, it was, and still is, a decent book. Yes , it's typical, young reader, adventure pulp, from around 1978, but it has a good story through-line, nice suspense, and a couple of decent thrills. Alan Dean Foster has always written a decent story, and this is typical of his work.
Can I just say how much I appreciate the editors for Mr. Sunday Movies? So many of these podcasty youtube posts just either put a static image on the screen, or a parade of public domain b-roll or AT BEST just the podcasters faces talking at you. This treatment you guys do adds both context AND complements the jokes being told. Just really effective stuff and I wish most youtube channels would imitate your style. I'm looking at you Simon Whistler and your media empire.
didn't Darth Maul use the force to throw an object at a door switch instead of using the force to press the switch? It did look cool though.
Yeah, he did
Yeah, he did
Snag Prophet so did Luke in return of the Jedi. The rancor pit.
To save their street cred; that takes more skill?
Maybe the force can’t press switches, so they always need to throw something at it
The art for the comic was surprisingly good. Simple and appealing style.
Anyway, you two are awesome
Thanks for adding visuals to this! I know this took a shit-load of time to edit, James.
I love that Luke becomes the leader of a tribe of primitive aliens by means of trial by combat. It feels like something straight out of the adventure serials that inspired George Lucas.
Holy crap, that was bloody awesome! The video I mean, the comic itself....kinda ok XD Weird Luke didn't just levitate the boulder off his leg though
it must have been cutting off his midichlorian circulation.
Bigger than a salt shaker..lol
A wild banditinc. Appears
Boulder was too heavy
I’m pretty sure he was knocked tf out by the boulder in the book version.
I'm an easy man, when Mr Sunday Movies' video pops up in my sub box, I stop what I'm doing and click on the video.
Sure do, James covers the insurance cost in case.
Same. Awkwardly enough I was in the middle of a Weekly planet pod.
Me?
Subbed but why did you want me to sub?
That's how life was meant to be lived.
So the two options were, Empire Strikes Back(best SW movie ever) or this shit, they made a good choice!
agreed
obviously empire is one of the best films ever made, but this as comic run is pretty cool.
It is a good thing this never became a movie.
remember this stuff is typical comic book fair in the late 70's and 80's
Well actually the storys of the prequels where good. The Problem was the writing, the acting and the execution of the Projejkt. If you write stiff dialouges for a movie, the actors can do their best and still sound like wooden puppets. The main problems where the portrait of Anakin as a whiny brat, Padme Amidalas portrait as a naive little bitch and the incredibly forced romance between them. Anakin was a stalking creep and every Woman with at least a little bit of Brain would never be in a relationship with such a guy. thes are points, that schould have been altered, but in a whole bigger Picture (sidecharakters likt Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine, Count Doku, most of the other Jedis) it has made the star wars universe much more complex and I like that.
Great stuff, this shorter version with the animations is certainly my preference. If you can keep the quality this high this series will be a real winner.
They should pay you two to retell comic books. This was fantastic.
This seems like it could make a good bridge story between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. With some major revisions....
EveryPixelCounts yeah this was just one of many reasons why Legends should have been scrapped
“This seems like it would make a good story, with some major revisions” sums up so much of the EU. Then Disney basically did that with Han Solo’s entire back story, which is like a greatest hits list of EU story beats and... people hated it!
It actually stayed in the EU in that exact spot I believe. (Before Disney killed all the books and started over that is 😅)
@@bellowingsilencehave you read eu stuff you disney fanboy
I've always thought Splinter of the Mind's Eye sounded like a Star TREK title.
Also it has nothing to do with the plot, right? Unless the crystal is called that.
I think it was an early CGI animation demo set to Thomas Dolby music.
I read this as a kid in the 80's. My friends and I were apeshit for it. I found a used copy recently and got it for my kids when they started reading books this long. They could not have been less interested. It's been sitting on the bookshelf since I bought it.
This was HILARIOUS. I haven't read this comic/book in years, it was a nice reminder. the animated parts were pretty good too. Thanks for this, looking forward to more... Could you do the old Dark Horse series... Dark Empire??? I'd be really interested to hear your take on it!
I still have the original book of this. Luke was conflicted over his desire for Leia but deep down thought he was unworthy because he was just a farmer boy and Leia was a princess. Meanwhile, Leia was still carrying the emotional scars of her interrogation back on the Death Star and suffering from flashbacks, something that Vader exploited when they came to the final fight. Overall it wasn't bad, helped tide me over while I waited for Empire to come out.
You guys HAVE to review the Star Wars comic from the 90's where Luke turns bad and the Emperor returns--as a clone (AHEM Spiderman clone saga).
They ended up doing it! And it's fucking hilarious! 😂
I've read the book, and let me tell you...
The incest is REAL with this one.
Well, not really - although there is a scene where Luke is looking at Leia while she's asleep, and he's getting ideas in his head, which, in hindsight, are kinda creepy-crawly.
well, it wasn't established that they are related back when this was made.
Though i have to say, what KillerSalmon said sounds bad regardless.
I read the book as well and I'm not sure what you're on about
The incest is about as real with this book as it is with Empire Strikes Back (in fact, possibly even less real, because there is not even an actual kiss in this book). Like yeah, there are hints that Luke is attracted to Leia, but it's all pretty innocent - no one makes any move on the other one.
I seriously wonder where do people get these ideas that there is some real incest in this book... I have a feeling that these people haven't actually read the damn book...
Lads, I have it! Grommel is Snoke
but Halla is the one wearing his gold bathrobe
Grommel was the original Snoke, and Palpatine had some of his clones pickled in a fish tank just in case

I just wanted to say, this was a great vid!
Wow do you just sit around and think, Damn what shit should we put out today, that probably no one cares about because I'm bored and need views
What's the name of the guys channel who is in this video?
Why is it called Splinter of the Mind's Eye? What does that have to do with anything in the story?
The Mind's Eye was a natural gem that channeled and stored force energy. A splinter of this is found and is given to Luke by a character who's name I no longer remember.
Bryon Lape So does that happen in the novelization of the story?
James Brady I believe so. It has been well over 30 years since I read the book. The shard is also shown in this video with Luke touching it.
The title refers to the shard of the kaiburr crystal, which Halla shows to Luke in the novel.
Shitty name for a Shitty book
This was the greatest thing ever

Geeez, Luke with the pimp hand like Batman slappin' Robin.
I lost it when Vader trips over his own severed arm lol
Unfortunately I'm old enough to have read the book in 1978, I also heard that filming had started on this script but was lost to a studio fire, good to hear this being talked about nearly 40 years later, keep these up, so entertaining

Ben does this so well. All the editing is always really good, but the sounds are all done so well. Much more immersive and a great way to present a comic to enhance it for video

I read this book in the late 80's. I was so glad it wasn't the sequel.
Man this is crazy, going back to the first one, I love that the jokes are still the same style after all these years! Never change boys!
Back where the caravan began in 2021! What a show 👏
I really enjoy when you guys summarize or narrate stuff.
Darth Vader tripping on his arm and dies...BOBAFET!!!
Darth Vader most likely does not die in this story- - his fate is left ambiguous - - but you point out a good analogy that all those smug people derisively laughing at the seemingly slapstick nature of his defeat should bear in mind when comparing this story to the films.
I think i havent been laughing this hard for weeks. Vader tripping over his own arm is just so... awfully awesome.
I just really enjoy how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

"you're an idiot. I'm in charge"
To be fair, that is probably the nicest Vader has ever been to someone who failed him.

this was one of your best videos. it was funny and the editing was SUPER! you should do something like this with Batman comic, like you did with that Batman movie.
Loved the part about Vader tripping over his severed arm. lol
Vader tripped on his own frickin' arm...holy crap thats hilarious
most feared sith lord in the galaxy defeated by son by tripping on severed arm
The way you explain shit is a bloody crack up mate
This was hilarious, especially since I read the novel, which the graphic novel was based on. The novel wasn't THAT bad, as a lot of the ridiculous things are explained in it, and may have been glossed over in the graphic novel, but listening to the story getting explained by someone not privy to these explanations is really funny, as they do seem really ridiculous.
Nice animations!
This is amazing! I can tell how much effort this took and I laughed out loud multiple times haha!
always love the clips from the podcast
Waking up to this (even when I've already listened to the audio twice) Is a good way to wake up. The fact that The Weekly Planet podcast is already up is the icing on top. Keep up the good work and all that!

This was freaking amazing! Didn’t know what to expect but my mind blew up with the careful attention to detail and overall complexity of the edit. You guys made an otherwise worthless story, worth watching through this video. Was referred here from th Star Wars Explained channel.
This was excellent! More of this please!
I totally read that book when I was a kid, I've never met anyone in person that has ever read it. Your explanation of the missing Han Solo and the fog makes total sense now.
There is a scene in the book where they have to cross a huge underground lake, that part was super crazy (the unknown of how deep the water is, what is in the water, etc).
I remember it was pretty good.
Weird. Why plan for a modest sequel in the case the 1st film tanked?
If your film tanks, you don't get a sequel ;)
Lucas has always sought to defy industry conventions and do things his own way.
Back in the day. Lucas would have easily convinced Ladd to greenlight this low budget sequel if the original tanked.
LOL look at all those god awful horror movies that get sequels upon sequels.
It was the 70s and block buster film making didn't exist
SmevMev It’s called a contract.
"Listen you're pretty good but what do you think about this BIG ROCK!" hahahahaha
Make this a reoccurring series. Please.
Props to the editors! Must have been so long to do all this...It looks perfect tho!!
It would be funny to see Vader, arguably the most bad ass of villains, just trip and fall over his own severed arm down a hole while yelling no in an actual movie. Would even be better than the Mandarin in Iron Man 3
Brilliant! Please read more comics like this. Best way to hear a comic book ever!
this was glorious
Been waiting for this since the audio version came out, glad to say I'm satisfied by this. Bloody good work I say Mr. Sunday, bloody good.
This Luke is definitely Anakin's son and would be turned to the dark side.
Great video man, I love when you post animated shorts or have cuts for what you guys are talking about. Keep it up mates.

Very informative and entertaining! Thankfully, this story was never made into a movie, however, I like the idea of Luke and Leia teaming up to take on Vader, that would have been cool. Also, it's such a shame that Leia never used her Force powers in TFA, a lost opportunity. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your videos. You just earned a new subscriber! :)
