In the novelization of the first film (which came out before the film itself) it was revealed that his name was Palpatine and that he was a senator who became "President" of the Republic (changed to Chancellor for the PT) before declaring himself Emperor around the time the Jedi were taken out. So the basics of his backstory were there from the beginning. The only real difference is that the prologue to the novel assumes that his cronies likely have the real power and he is basically a puppet who is hidden away from the people, but even that can be seen as a theory by the people since it is an in-universe document from the "Journal of the Whills."

I mean you have to admit that Luke facing down a bunch of First Order Walkers and Kylo Ren without taking a single life, saving the remnants of the resistance and only sacrificing himself is a very Jedi thing to do. I’m not arguing the merits of TLJ, just saying Luke did the Jedi thing. Most Jedi thing he did in the original trilogy wasn’t beating Vader, but resisting the Dark Side.
@wespozo The Prequels ruined every idea of what a jedi should be and Yoda getting to fight is the prime example of this. Yoda sucks. The guy who should be the wisest jedi and greatest peacekeeper just blindly accepts and leads the clones to fight in the war, is too dumb to figure out it was all a trap and fights with the intent to kill without a second tought... It's too dumb. The Prequels are a shame. The advice he gave Obiwan when Anakin turned was nothing short of "sorry dude but you gotta kill him, there's no other way." He's not the same character Luke meets in Dagobah. Can't be.
Ezio Auditore I completely disagree. It doesn’t matter if he was physically there or if he wasn’t. What matters is the example he set and the hope he inspired with his actions. Him actually being there physically standing down the First Order woulda been awesome... but it also would’ve somewhat missed the point. The point isn’t that the Jedi are a bunch of Überpowerful baddasses that can face down armies. The point is that the Jedi should be able to inspire hope without ever needing to draw their weapon. He doesn’t need to face down the whole First Order with a laser sword, because the First Order is a problem he can’t solve. Luke’s time is over. He was the hero at the start of the myth, but myths aren’t made to sell toys. Eventually, inevitably, the generations after need to be trusted to handle their own problems. And the generation before’s job is to give them all they need to solve those problems. Luke couldn’t cut down the First Order. That’s just giving Kylo what he wanted. By not even showing up, he denied Kylo the battle he wanted and gave the resistance the hope they needed.
Think about it: if it’s revealed that Palpatine has been doing this for EONS, how much more foreboding does his presence in this story become? The folks in 9 could just not know because of dramatic irony.
Fun! I got this comics in my Star Wars-starved teens, in the mid 90's. I absolutely enjoy it, still. I also enjoy the new movies, keep em coming, is what I say
“The Emperor is very unhappy with this and they lightsaber fight, Luke chopts off his hand 151, chop off hand” This is still better than any notes I take...
Vima serves the exact same purpose Maz Kanata does lol. Inexplicable old woman who gives the female protagonist a lightsaber in a Mos Eisley type of setting
God I really, REALLY love the artwork of those old comics. All the space ships, the strange coloring choices, the weird facial expressions... I'm sure it's not for everybody but it really fuckin does it for me lol
I always felt like these comics didn't really fit into the old EU canon, but the books still had to acknowledge them. This is just such a weird series of events to take place in between the Zahn Thrawn trilogy and the Anderson Jedi Academy trilogy, especially for Luke's characterization.
I just realized that if they bring back the emperor, it contradicts the profecy George Lucas made about Anakin being the chosen one who defeats the Sith. Apparently, Anakin didn't defeat him.
True, but in the end it does help Luke understand that the Path of the Jedi wasn't meant to be taken alone. Not much of a justification, but it's better than just having Palpatine back just because.
In the first briefing scene in "Rise of Skywalker" someone points out that cloning is, "a secret only the Sith knew." JJ is apparently unaware that there was an entire f*cking Star Wars movie that revolved around a war between robots and CLONES.
@@AwesomeBrickSauce I don't think JJ cared about that because if he had taken a moment to watch the earlier movies, he would have known there was an industry on Kamino that made clones. The movie was even called, "Attack of the Clones." So, the existence of clones has been general knowledge throughout the Republic for at last 30 years because Kamino delivered 1.2 million of them to the Republic to use as an army! And the Jedi Council personally took charge of them and used them in a war, knowing what they were.
@@deadspacemasseffect He says, "dark science . . . cloning . . . secrets only the Sith knew." This just makes the Jedi Council in "Attack of the Clones" look even stupider, if they accepted delivery of something that only the Sith could have created. it means the existence of clones has been general knowledge throughout the Republic for at least 30 years because Kamino delivered 1.2 million of them to the Republic to use as an army! And the Jedi Council personally took charge of them and used them in a war, knowing they were clones.
@@DerpaTure9503 We literally see Snoke clones on Exogol. Of course that's how Palpatine returned. It's the only way he COULD return since he was blown up in "Return of the Jedi." Twice. "Dark science" explains nothing. "Secrets only the Sith knew" explains nothing. Those phrases are no better than saying, "somehow Palpatine returned." So that leaves cloning, which we actually SEE happening. When fans pointed out what an idiot JJ was for ignoring an entire "Star Wars" movie (Attack of the Clones), the Disney-bots who defend these movies said, "of COURSE, the guy didn't mean CLONING. You see that was a LIST, so it could also have been ummmm . . . 'dark science' or 'secrets only the Sith knew.' " Which doesn't explain anything.
@@DerpaTure9503 Too bad neither this movie nor any of the previous Star Wars movies explained what "dark science" or "secrets only the Sith knew" are. Then, we could have said, "Oh yeah. That makes sense." When you bring back your main villain, especially one that we saw DIE, an explanation is necessary. If you're finding the Disney movies difficult to explain, maybe that's because they are. The writing is awful.
Never could understand why Luke is wearing Vader's armor, but then again this was EU, the writers didn't care nor did they have to care, so they thought Vader's armor was just a regular Jedi armor and that they all just regularly wore black armor and they just made up whatever they wanted about Jedi to have a lightsaber duel in every story... We suffered a ton of bullshit before Yuuzhan Vong and Darth Caedus came along

The guy who should be the wisest jedi and greatest peacekeeper just blindly accepts and leads the clones to fight in the war, is too dumb to figure out it was all a trap and fights with the intent to kill without a second tought... It's too dumb. The Prequels are a shame.
The advice he gave Obiwan when Anakin turned was nothing short of "sorry dude but you gotta kill him, there's no other way."
He's not the same character Luke meets in Dagobah.
4:07 Did the Emperor really say "that's pretty rad" ??? 😂😂😂😂
@Ezio Auditore Well tbh i thought it must be a joke! But since these are pages from a comic, who knows? Sounds like comic-ish dialog😜
I actually wouldn’t mind a recap of the other Emperor resurrections.
This AU about Emperor Palpatine being an ongoing clone would be a really good way to retcon the Palpatine in universe
Think about it: if it’s revealed that Palpatine has been doing this for EONS, how much more foreboding does his presence in this story become? The folks in 9 could just not know because of dramatic irony.
I think all star wars movies would be improved if James voiced R2
"Somehow Palpatine returned..."
This is like epic fan fiction, only it was cannon at one point LMFAO
3:24 that might be the best transition I've ever seen in my life. Good job Ben or potential other editor.
Fun! I got this comics in my Star Wars-starved teens, in the mid 90's. I absolutely enjoy it, still. I also enjoy the new movies, keep em coming, is what I say
“The Emperor is very unhappy with this and they lightsaber fight, Luke chopts off his hand 151, chop off hand”
This is still better than any notes I take...
I want the entire trilogy. Do it, COWARDS
Vima serves the exact same purpose Maz Kanata does lol. Inexplicable old woman who gives the female protagonist a lightsaber in a Mos Eisley type of setting
Actually in early drafts Michael Joseph Jackson was gonna play palpatine
Disney needs ya'll. this was far more entertaining than last jedi by a mile
Been listening to the podcast for 4 years love the content fellas
God the transition to Boba and crew with Solo playing in the background was amazing
Oh god please cover the yuzahn vong invasion, really want to hear masons non-plused reaction.
God I really, REALLY love the artwork of those old comics. All the space ships, the strange coloring choices, the weird facial expressions...
I'm sure it's not for everybody but it really fuckin does it for me lol
I want the full trilogy of these comics. DO IT
I always felt like these comics didn't really fit into the old EU canon, but the books still had to acknowledge them. This is just such a weird series of events to take place in between the Zahn Thrawn trilogy and the Anderson Jedi Academy trilogy, especially for Luke's characterization.
“I’m baby” - Sheev Palpatine
James don't sell yourself short. Your animations are amazing.
Mr Sunday: A Star Wars story
Shut up and take my money!! LoL!
Mr Sunday:A Star Wars Story(attack of the Mason's)......Someone make a poster for this that's sweet as m8
This story was written in mid 90's. The Phantom Menace had not come out yet.
@@Facade953 Yes, but they keep saying Disney is bringing back Palpatine.
Am I crazy or was the title "The First Return of the Emperor" yesterday???
userunknown203 yeah, I’m guessing they watched the rise of sky walker...
In the first briefing scene in "Rise of Skywalker" someone points out that cloning is, "a secret only the Sith knew."
JJ is apparently unaware that there was an entire f*cking Star Wars movie that revolved around a war between robots and CLONES.
Rewarch the scene, it's two separate words(like its Cloneing, OR its something only the Sith knows like dark magic or something)
As someone who really didn't like Last Jedi, I really like their trolling of the people obsessed with it.
I tried rewatching it and it honestly felt like a chore
Yeah i also like when they make fun of TLJ haters.
Jonny Drogba but... they didn’t do that...
@@captainbritain7379 They did though. What do you mean?
Not exactly trolling, but they are amused at how angry people get if they just mention it.
When comicbook art was stylish.
That's some trippy looking art.
Sidenote - Mando is way cooler than Boba Fett.
Please do the 90s X-Men, they are so wonderful and terrible at the same time
I remember being a young teen in a comic shop, seeing one of the later 6 comics with Palpatine entering a new young body to challenge Luke. I remember thumbing through it, thinking. 'This is dumb', then putting it back. XD
