continuing on the fact of lover over hate. Ty Lee feared Azula the most, but she’d also valued her friendship with Mai more. As when they first seen each other, (Mai and Ty Lee) they both welcomed each other with a hug and excitement. While on the other hand, Ty Lee bowed to Azula showing more of obedience/fear.
they both feared azula alot too, in the comics when she comes back they're afraid just by the IMPLICATION that the kemurikage fights like azula
Remember when Azula tells Ty Lee she will stay to watch her show, Ty Lee wasnt glad or excited. She was worried.

Azula doesn't believe in relationships based on love. She thinks fear is the only way to enforce loyalty. Mai's betrayal shows het that she's wrong and that is far more significant than you might think, as we'll see in future episodes

I'm betting he wished he had died on the gondola. He ordered the line cut with Azula on board. Had she not been able to escape she could have died. And, I'm betting that right now she's not in a forgiving mood.

Still, the Fire Nation Princess was on the gondola too, and she looked genuinely scared for a moment. Does he have the authority to sacrifice her too? Or was it just for his record?
@@TukaihaHithlecI don't think he knew she was on the Gondola. If he did, there is no way he would order such a thing, reputation ruined or otherwise. Because if anything happened to the Princess on his watch, especially since she's now essentially the heir to the throne, the Fire Lord would torch him alive.

I like how, even before the absolutely iconic "I love Zuko more than I fear you", we also got to see earlier the *other* big downside of ruling by fear. When Sokka gave orders "from the Warden" to let the prisoners into the yard during lockdown, the other guards were too afraid of getting on Freeza/Visser Three/Vader's bad side to even dare question those orders.
Honestly though Azula's retort - 'No YOU miscalculated - you should have feared ME more!'
I think my favorite thing about Ty Lee betraying Azula is that everyone is shocked, even Ty Lee. For a moment it's like she couldn't even believe what she just did.
I think in that moment, she had an out of body experience. I also think that is probably a big reason why she learned chi blocking, because if she ever came across Azula again, she would need some way to defend herself.
Also Katara was in prison, Toph, Appa, Sokas father, Suki and all the Kioshy warriors, Hama along side all the southern water tribe benders, the whole invasion army, and now Mai and Tay Lee so pretty much everyone in the show has been in prison 😂

The betrayal was a HUGE breaking point for Azula and I genuinely love how the writers handled this. This show is a whole masterpiece!

this is one of my fav episode. mai is really ready to fight azula even we saw her bout to going for the lightning, and then ty lee fast reaction was to save her bff, im shocked. the betrayal.. and azula expression, its really a good episode!

When Mai confroted Azula, she was a bit confused and angry but when Ty lee put her on the ground not only Azula but everyone was shoked, even Mai, that moment was a breaking point for everyone and it was awesome
I'm sure after the first escape failed, Chit Sang's girl and best friend probly disowned him. Especially if he met them while in prison. People turn on you like that. After that Sokka and Zuko were probly his best friends.
I dont think Mai and Tylee had a "fight for what you think is right" moment because of zuko. 16:00 Here mai I don't think she believes what zuko thinks is best for the fire nation. She simply loves him more and doesn't want him to die or get captured. She chose to save him not because of what is right but because she cares and loves him. Tylee attacked azula because she wanted to save Mai and not because she is inspired to fight against azula or whatever
I second this. Them turning on Azula wasn’t cheesy because they weren’t following Zuko’s example, they just didn’t want someone they cared about to die.

As a heads up, Korra will be a very different structure which I don't think lots of fans of ATLA expected and was a turn off for people.
It was also a bit more direct in it's sociopolitical commentary compared to the original which was uncommon at the time it came out.

There is one phrase that Mai tell Azula during the Beach Episode that people tend not to pick up that carry a lot of weight.
"You want me me to express myself. Leave me alone !"
In that scene Mai express really herself, she is not just telling Azula to shut up but to stop interfering in her life, to stop manipulating and controlling her.
That why I love the beach episode it's not only there to show how Zuko realises his mistake but to also how Azula relation with her closest friends is twisted and broken and set up the betrayal.

When they're running towards the Gondola (around 9:20 here), and the Guards firebend to them, Zuko shoves Sokka out of the way and protects everyone with his new fire techniques. He's just that awesome ans good...nope, you're not bad at being good, Zuko, you were good being bad and excel at being good, your uncle knew and he's so f proud!
Not only were they attacking Mai, but they were also about to cut the line and literally kill Azula the princess of the fire nation lol
I don’t think the warden was aware that Azula was on top of the gondola, had he known she was up there I don’t think he would have ordered the line to be cut.
