And this is the reaction I’ve seen on anyone who actually gives this series a try. They always start thinking “oh, a funny cartoon for kids” and end up totally immersed into the storytelling. I loved your reaction, man.
One thing that was pointed out to me is the reason Azula has such a visceral reaction to Mai's betrayal ("I love Zuko more than I fear you") is because the way she was raised by their father, she was taught to gain respect and loyalty out of fear (like Ozai scarring Zuko). Their mother, however, was the opposite and used love towards those she cared for. You pointed out in a previous video that Azula played Ozai's game better than Zuko, but Mai is essentially pointing out that Zuko played his mother's "game" (or at least that's how Azula sees it) better than her. Having her brother, someone she's always looked down on, best her at something (and at a deeper level point out a social/emotional weakness) is what makes her lose control of her emotions.
Also it kind of revealed how fragile their whole fear-based empire is. Yes, from Mai's perspective, Zuko rebelling is out of left field...but, when you really think about it, the Fire Nation (Zuko and Mai included) have been up to no good for a long time. Zuko has plenty of reasons to do this, like the giant scar on his face. What's interesting is how quickly that rebellion created a ripple effect. While Mai was surprised at first, it didn't take long for her to follow suit. Just like that, Mai is on the receiving end of the Fire Nation's cruelty, called a "traitor," Azula yelling at her, about to kill her...now it's a domino effect, Tai Lee won't just stand by and let her friend die. Look how quickly these fear-based relationships fall apart under pressure. It just goes to show you how weak they always were from the start. Also, watching how easily someone like Azula can sick her guards on anybody who displeases her, how quickly your friend can become the "traitor" of the week...I think they're starting to realize they're on the wrong side.
I love when people understand the severity of Mai’s betrayal. Ozai changed the punishment from exile to death, and Azula would have done it. And everyone knew that too! So for Tai Lee to also betray Azula and completely stop the altercation, means she’s sentenced to death as well. Stopping Azula was their way of keeping it a “kid’s show” and just locking them away. This is my favorite episodes because it highlights Sokka, Suki, Mai and Tai Lee (along with others). The most underrated characters in the show.
24:44 I like how Azula starts calling Zuko "Zuko" in this moment, instead of Zuzu. You can tell she respects him now after he stopped being manipulated and took his own path even if that makes them enemies once more.
@@RiseeRee True but then she wanted something from him, she couldn't get away with the disrespect in that moment if Zuko was to pick her side. She gains nothing now, she just feels it.
Yeah after dragon master episode, zuko no more growl during firebending, and have patience to defense before attacking. and it's opposite to Azula before and after betrayed.
There are also differences in sounds of firebending between fuel-rage firebending(dictator style) and original firebending(dragon dance). Zuko's firebending sounds like a dragon's roar/breath where it has more crisps sound than azula or other typical fuel-rage firebending.
People keep saying they can't believe Mai and Ty Lee betrayed Azula. But, it's not a betrayal. Azula basically coerced Ty Lee to join her group by heaping more and more danger onto her circus act. Ty Lee ain't bright, but she knows that unless she does what Azula wants she's dead. Mai is smarter and knows from past experience that acting like Azula's friend and comrade is the best way to stay alive. You see dissent a few times from Mai during the series. She refuses to dive into the rock water slurry during the Drill episode. Azula isn't around to intimidate or punish her. When Azula interrupts Mai and Zuko during their picnic you can see Mai give her the side eye when they pass each other. Azula miscalculated by allowing Zuko and Mai to get back together and rekindle their relationship. Mai acts all dreary and bored the entire series. But, somehow she hooks up with the one male in the Fire Nation that is unlike all the stoic power-driven people in the Fire Nation. They seem a strange couple until you realize that Mai can show Zuko emotion without being shut down because of duty or seemingly weakness. So, Azula thinks friends and her "friends" think slaves. Slaves can't betray. But, they can rebel if they love something more than their restricted world. Mai loves Zuko and Ty Lee loves Mai. And, no one loves Azula.
Azula (to Mai): i never expected this from you Ty lee: allow me to introduce myself It's funny how this moment is one of the most powerful and unexpected scenes in the whole show and you reacted accordingly, since i think it's the first time you literally squeal while reacting to avatar, that goes to show the impact of what happens when one of the most innocent character in the show stands up against one of the most ruthless villain in the show, and does it by surprise, that is one of the best twists together with roku being zuko's great grandfather
Mai is so underrated, imagine if this wasnt a kids show...instead of aiming for the hands she would aim for the kill, she would be such a badass and a good assasin
Overall, it's kinda cooler that she doesn't. Aiming for nonlethal pins with just thrown weapons is incredibly difficult. Means she has the skills to kill easily, but goes the harder route and takes prisoners efficiently.
That scene between Mai and Azula is soo good, and is probably the breaking point in Azula’s character for the rest of the season (he already finished on Patreon)
Correct, this moment breaks Azula, this is the reason why She kicks out everyone in the finale episodes, cuz after her father (Ozai) technically betrayls her She doesn't trust no one and that brings her downfall, You can say that "She created her own damnnation"
Bro that scream at 26:44 had me IN TEARS!!! You are such an absolute joy to watch and binging your avatar reaction series has been so much fun. Stay awesome!
If you haven't already, look up the Avatar graphic novel Suki Alone for more backstory about Suki's time on Boiling Rock before Sokka & Zuko showed up.
There were several really good interpersonal moments in this episode. Like when Zuko locks Mai and the guard in the room and you see her glare at him through the slit in the door. He was doing as she asked and looked her in the eyes when he broke her heart. When Zuko jumped onto the gondola, and Sokka caught him, if he didn't trust his, still, he could have let him fall. And similarly, when Sokka almost fell off the gondola and Zuko ran to save him. The way they both fought Azula as a team, was beautiful, covering each other and setting each other up to strike. Also, this was the first time that Zuko fought Azula and they were, almost, equal in form and strength. Zuko really learned a lot from his lessons from the dragons. He was calm, focused and precise. Probably because he didn't have to be angry to firebend anymore.
The look on Ty Lee’s face during the tense confrontation between Mai and Azula was that of a child when parents argue. Psychologically a long, long fuse has been lit in Azula’s mind. It still amazes me how the writers can apply comic relief in unlikely scenes. Team Sokka’s attempt to start a riot and how it’s really done cracks me up😂
Yea this is the best reaction t the Mai and Ty lee turn. Because that is HOW WE ALL FELT after waiting years for this show Edie silly after the writers strike...AND we didn't have Netflix.
Safe to say that Hakosa approves of his son's choice in Suki, and would be glad to have her in the family. If nothing else, she would be able to keep Sokka in line.
In the episode where Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee invade the Earth Kingdom as Kyoshi Warriors, Azula has a line delivered to the Earth king that goes, "it's terrible when you can't trust the people who are closest to you." In the background, Mai and Ty Lee make eye contact for a very brief moment, so subtle and quick that most people completely miss it. All the way back then, the creators were foreshadowing this moment.
It was a double meaning actually. This is before they really have a falling out, so at the time, it's more of a look of knowing, because they're both in on it unlike the Earth King.
It kinda reminds me of the Annie ambush where Eren and Mikasa look at each other in the back, you can already tell they are saying "You're not really our friend, you're just using us"
I have been eagerly awaiting this episode to see his reaction to Mai and Ty Lee’s betrayal AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!made me laugh so hard my eyes started watering
I love Azula, but it’s always so satisfying to see Mai and Ty Lee find the courage to leave Azula. Neither of them truly wanted to be with her in the first place really, Mai just went along and Ty Lee was pressured to join.
There are some clues throughout the show that does indicate that Mai might turn against her. You might catch it on second watch. She isn't as afraid of Azula as Ty Lee and she and Ty Lee are closer than they are with Azula which is why Ty Lee would not allow her friend to be harmed. Ever since they were little, Azula has bullied them. Remember she pushed Ty Lee down while they were cartwheeling and set the apple on fire on Mai's head. In Drill episode Mai she refuses to follow Sokka and Katara in the "wall sludge juice". She tells Ty Lee that Azula can shoot all the lightening she wants at her but she won't do so Ty Lee goes in alone. In Book 3 episode 2 I think, when her and Zuko are cuddled on the beach and Azula interrupts them, she gives Azula this side eye like b****. Finally, she screams at her and tells her to leave her alone in the beach episode although it was dismissed as her yelling at the group. Finally, Azula treats Zuko poorly and is literally trying to kill him. She's loved Zuko for years. Mai was not with that.
Yeah, this is the point Azula cracks, I honestly believe if she had not made it to the prison before they escaped then she never would've broken and might've beaten Zuko and Katara during Sozen's comet.
I wanted to wait for this moment to point something out... remember back when Azula and her friends pretented to be the Kyoshi warriors to get inside Ba Sing Se and the earth king told them about the invasion plan, well she told the earth king that it's hard finding people you can trust and at that moment Ty Lee and Mai looked at each other in the same way Mai side eyed Azula in this episode meaning it was kinda of a foreshadow of them eventually betraying Azula
They re-ran these two episodes back to back all the time on nickelodeon when I was a kid and I never complained, cause of how fire they were. My favorite episodes.
This might just be cartoon logic, but Zuko, Sokka, Hakoda, and Chit Sang got up to where the warden was maybe ten seconds after Suki got there. So unless they're the Flash and ran up all those stairs probably full of guards in about 20 seconds, they did the same parkour shit as Suki, and that's pretty impressive.
