That betrayal scene has to be in the hall-of-fame for plot twists in TV idgaf. Azula is a character who has probably never taken a real L before in her life because she's literally just that badass. Then she suddenly gets betrayed *back to back* by her only two friends in the world, aaaaand she gets completely folded too. The gasp at 29:05 honestly just says it all.
Her biggest L started when Zuko told the truth to Ozai of her lying about him killing The Avatar. Think about it, after the Fire Nation succesfully foiled the invasion, Azula will tell their victory to her dad and then she found out that her brother whom she manipulated to go home wasn't there anymore and left the Fire Nation as the traitor. Also, I think the family dinner will be awkward at that time since Ozai found out that his own family turned against him. His brother escaped from the jail, his son left as the traitor and his daughter is a liar. And I bet Ozai hasn't spoken to Azula at some point since in Sozin's Comet Part One episode, we can see him looking annoyed to realized Azula was there. Also, there's no communication between them at that time when Ozai ditched Azula.
Best part is, it’s not out of nowhere in retrospect. Ty Lee was never really in it for the Fire Nation or for Azula specifically, as she’s not really loyal to anyone but her friends. So when one of her friends is about to attack another of her friends for betraying Azula for the sake of saving Zuko, she would obviously side with Mai. She doesn’t see this as a conflict of nations or honor or anything, just conflicts involving old friends, and she doesn’t want any of her friends to get hurt/killed
@@Sageboy13 nah. She just doesn’t care enough about 99% of the world. The small percent that has Zuko and Azula in it, she will get active accordingly.
Yeah Ty Lee probably didnt want to attack Azula but knew at that moment that between her and Mai, Azula for sure would've went for a kill shot. And it is also crazy because at this point in the show Ty Lee was closer to Azula
@@mathies3598 I think they cut it from these reactions, but yeah, Azula went to the Circus Ty Lee was performing in and pretty much intimidated the Ringmaster into making Ty Lee’s act a literal death trap. In the first two seasons he instinctually knew every time he was cornered to do some B Boy stuff, but now that he knows Firebending is life and is free of the Fire Nations expression restructive teaching, he goes all out. Also, he now truly realizes Fire bending comes fron the breath since it too represents life. He's learned from his Uncle and the Dragons who taught his Uncle.
Some of the foreshadowings to Mai's betrayal that I've found during my rewatches: 1) In The Drill Mai says that Azula can shoot all the lightning she wants at her, because she won't jump on the dirty water. 2) When they're in Ba Sing Se, Mai and Ty Lee trade looks when Azula talks about not trusting who is closest to you. 3) In the begining of Book 3, Mai side eyes Azula after she tells Mai to leave her and Zuko alone to talk. 4) In The Beach, Mai tells Azula to "leave her alone" while around the camp fire and proceeds to hug Zuko later on.
I think, just based on every interaction I’ve seen with mai and azula, mai really doesn’t fear azula at all. I do think that there is more to their interaction in the beach episode though. Like, I agree with you, but I think there’s more as well.
@@cryingtomatohead8626 the meaning of being a people person is "a person who enjoys or is particularly good at interacting with others." Doesn't have anything to do with being able to gauge people or anything like that.
She trained her whole life to do shit like that, didn't she? I'm pretty sure Azula was just showing off at that point, and she jumped WAY too early (the gondola wasn't even on screen when she jumped, and we could see before Sokka's group left that the space between each of them isn't much more than 3-5 meters), while Ty lee jumped at the correct timing, so she didn't have to hover in the air, it's just that in that particular scene it looked MUCH further because of how it was done (not saying I could do that, jumping from a rounded square made of metal to another while above a boiling lake is pretty scary, not to mention how slippery the water vapor must make it be)
a popular theory is that ty lee is of air nation descent, and her incredible acrobatic skills are partially due to that. her eyes are grey and if you take away her hair, her face looks remarkably like aang’s
@@allison8654 Well, if you look at the real world equivalents to the bending martial arts, Airbending's based on Baguazhang, the foremost of the Chinese 'Neijing' internal martial arts, which revolve around the mastery of spiritual, mental and chi-related aspects, and are developed by using 'neigong', or "internal exercises," as opposed to "external exercises" which develop physical, physiological aspects. As such, Ty Lee's air-bending heritage (confirmed by the creators), and air-bending techniques, are the direct progenitors of her 'chi-blocking' martial arts style. And bending itself's just the external projection of chi to influence the four respective elements, by those with sufficient levels of mastery over it; non-benders still possess chi too, and can still attain mastery of its use, but they're limited to the Neijing internal martial arts (in the case of Master Piandao, and to a lesser extent Sokka and Zuko, the Wudang Sword technique). Which is why Ty Lee, as a non-bending chi master, is arguably even more capable of defying the laws of physics, when it comes to her strength, speed, agility and durability, than Zuko and Azula are.
The look on Ty Lee’s face during the tense confrontation between Mai and Azula was that of a child when parents argue. Psychologically a long, long fuse has been lit in Azula’s mind. It still amazes me how the writers can apply comic relief in unlikely scenes. Team Sokka’s attempt to start a riot and how it’s really done cracks me up😂
Mai's quote saying she loves Zuko more than she fears Azula is near word for word how Azula thinks her own mother thinks of her, thats why she had such a reaction since it was really another punch to an open wound she's still got.
You get it . I feel like azula was neglected as a child by her mother . I like to think because she was a troublesome child and showed more character traits of her father . Being mean , ambitious and emotionless
@curtiscj3087 I feel like it's less neglect and more that Azula was manipulated by her father agaisnt her mother and Zuko. From Zukos memories their mother encouraged them playing together and scolded zuko in equal measure yo Azula if he did something wrong. I think their mom had to put in a little more effort to protect zuko from ozai and ozai used it to create an us vs them mentality in azula
Do you guys remember in the episode "The Guru" when Azula said: "It's terrible when you can't trust the people who are closest to you." ? In that moment Mai and Ty Lee looked at each other. Pretty ironic
According to the "Avatar Extras" from this episode, the effects of the cooler cause most firebenders to lose their bending for about a week. Zuko has to be a very powerful firebender in order for the cooler to have no such effects on him, even with his breath of fire technique. Zuko used his breath of fire at the north pole. Zuko’s breath of fire in Book 1 v Book 3. I think it’s fair to say that in Book 1, he still hadn’t quite mastered proper breath control but, by Book 3, he has completely mastered it. Notice how in Book 3 Zuko takes very deep and controlled breaths designed to take in more oxygen while in Book 1 his breaths are very short and quick. Also notice the color of Zuko’s fire. In Book 1, Zuko’s breath of fire is red, meaning that he’s feeding less oxygen into his flame, making the fire somewhat cool. In Book 3, his flame is yellow, meaning that he’s able to feed more oxygen into his fire, which consequently makes his fire hotter. Zuko incorporates moves from the Dancing Dragon to block many fire blasts, including ones from Azula, showing that the Dancing Dragon is not just a novice firebending move but a very powerful form that can be used for defense and attack. Now, you can argue that this discrepancy has to do with the fact that in Book 1, Zuko was in the tundra. HOWEVER, in “The Boiling Rock,” Zuko was being kept in the Cooler, which was supposed to prevent firebending. Not to mention that when Chit Sang was in the Cooler before Zuko, we saw him shivering and evidently being very cold. Zuko, on the other hand…
@@rivershen8954if we take cooler as isolation rooms from real world, it’s based on decision of chief. Technically you get fed, but bare essentials and usually it take more than 24 hours.
I didn't notice this the first time, but Zuko is actually giving Sokka the "AND THEN WHAT?" Speech from Ba Sing Se, "They dont exactly have a bison daycare" -> "are we going to keep him in the tea shop?" (Paraphrasing)
If I had to guess, based on how dude was quick to ditch his girlfriend and friend when he got another chance to escape, he was probably locked in for draft dodging or desertion
I love seeing the entire Mai + Ty Lee betrayal. It's so satisfying because their whole relationship was always Azula commanding them what to do and they just willingly did it (unless it was gross, or too much work for Mai), but the moment Azula was going to hurt Mai, Ty Lee reacted without even thinking about it. As a fan of Azula's character, it was a bittersweet moment to see this. Her companions were pretty much under her boot heel since the moment they were introduced. They've been with her since she recruited them. Now that they're gone she's got no one left aside from her in her team. The look of utter confusion on her face during the exchange between her and Mai just shows that she's really not that well equipped to handle situations like these. She's typically about the mission, and doing whatever it takes to complete the mission. Feelings? They're not something that she really picked up on.
One detail I appreciate was Zuko's breath of fire. Iroh tells him it could save his life during the raid of the North Pole, and despite this he was shivering most of the time and was almost killed by the cold. This time, having mastered true fire and realizing firebending is both life and breath, he's not shivering at all or looking slightly uncomfortable in the cooler, even when Chit Sang, another firebender, looked like he might die from it.
A point to consider: compare and contrast Hakoda with Ozai. They are 100% polar opposites, emotionally. Hakoda is caring, nurturing, and is very open with his affection for his children, despite being forced to leave for several years. His children never, for one moment, doubted his love for them. He respects them and helps them grow to reach their potential, and he's very calm and considerate when it comes to their foibles, flubs, and fudge-ups, realizing why they (ie, Katara) are lashing out, and he takes it in stride, knowing they're in pain and helping them deal with it. His first reaction to seeing Sokka was to start crying and embrace him. He also trusted that his son had already come up with a plan to escape. Ozai, on the other hand, is a cold, calculating, manipulative, sociopathic, narcissistic user and abuser. He plays his children against each other, caring nothing for their feelings or well-being, except insofar as they can be used for his own gain. He punishes them for even perceived slights, no matter what the reasons behind them are. He crushes weakness, empathy, and disobedience, and has no qualms about immediately maiming and discarding them if they displease him in any way. Azula is exactly the kind of child I'd expect out of THAT particular fustercluck, and she doesn't disappoint. Honestly, it took an absolute miracle (read: Iroh) to keep Zuko even as even-keeled and well-balanced as he is.
That's why Iroh never gave up on dude. Because he knew that Zuko was already a good kid and he was just broken from his fucked up brother. Which is also why I think he went with Zuko after his banishment because he was given an opportunity to help him without the eyes of Odi- I mean Ozai on him.
I love that you noticed the difference in Zuko's firebending! It's so much more self-assured and strong, and less like spurts of anger. It's one of the coolest things, watching the way the animators were able to include nuances and little details in his character development like that.
These 2 episodes are two of my favourite episodes of all time. Sokka and Zuko are the best duo. You would never guess it, but the way they set it up is just *chefs kiss* Also. Fire benders are completely incapacitated in the cooler, however, Iroh taught Zuko a technique to keep his body warm. And if you remember, he explained how he learned how to redirect lighting using a water bending technique. The breathing technique used to keep his body warm is an air bending technique, which is also why Aang never gets cold, even with sleeping without a blanket
"The previous phrase you just said is perceived by me much like an unpolished gem which is hard aroung the edges, person I recently met but am already making significant bonds with" -Zuko

The boiling rock is legit one of my favorite episodes That's rough buddy, the Suki fight, the Mai and ty Lee switch up, the whole thing is just amazing
In my opinion these two episodes are the best of Season 3 excluding The Avatar and The Firelord. They gave us perhaps the funniest line of the entire series. "That's rough buddy." never fails to make me laugh.
This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. This is the first and only episode where only one type of bending is featured, namely firebending. The other bending arts appear only in the opening sequence. Zuko and Mai's exchange about Mai needing protection was a nod to their past relationship. Normally, when Azula bends blue fire, it cools off to orange fire after a few seconds. However, when she was firebending on the gondola, the fire retained its blue color, even when it burned out. The "Previously on Avatar" section for this episode is the longest of all episodes in seasons two and three. This is the last episode in which Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are seen together. This is one of the only episodes in which Ty Lee is shown fighting, but is unsuccessful at chi blocking her opponents due to the latter evading her attacks. This is the only episode with no credit for Dee Bradley Baker.
Sokka mentioned that his first girlfriend turned into the moon, referring to Yue. This was the first episode in the series in which Zuko called any members of Team Avatar by their real names. He spoke Sokka and Appa's names out loud, and he wrote Aang's name in a letter. The scene in which Sokka tries to kiss Suki in his disguise is similar to the way Suki approaches him in her security guard uniform and kisses him in "The Serpent's Pass". Zuko used his breath of fire technique to keep warm, like he did in "The Siege of the North, Part 1". In "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse", Aang was the one who decided to keep attacking, while in this episode, Sokka said it was he who made the decision. Sokka may feel responsible as it was his decision to let Aang make the choice. One of the pirates from "The Waterbending Scroll" and "The Waterbending Master" exits the gondola before Hakoda. This was also referenced when two guards were discussing the new prisoners while Sokka and Zuko were in the cooler. Zuko saying that Iroh once said that he never thinks things through is a reference to "Lake Laogai".
12:28 Zuko took Uncle Iroh's teachings to heart about drawing strength from other elements in book 2 chapter 9 "bitter work". In season 1 finale before Zuko swam in the ice water, Iroh told him that airbenders can keep themselves warm with just their breathing. Zuko must have started learning techniques from other elements, which is why he was able to still firebend after being kept in the cooler.
"I'm Never happy" "That's rough buddy" I really wished we get to see more of this Zuko. Also Ty Lee wrecking Azula is one of the best moments of the show
I didn't realize in my first watch but seeing him so happy for them instead of being jealous of them not having a shithead father was amazing. Really big of him and showing of what kind of person he truly is.
Zuko : gets caught trying to cover for his friend meeting up with his girl Ty lee : betrays the whole fire nation and Azula by supporting her friend to save her man Friendship goals
Look at Ty Lee situation here: One of her friend is The Princess of Fire Nation and she's also a prodigy who's not only can create blue fires but also can produce lightning. She's also smart, calculated, cunning and fearless. Her other friend is the daughter of a government who's very skills at knives. If you look closely, Azula look like she wants to direct lightning to Mai and Mai has prepared to throw her knife or kunai to be precise. So, Ty Lee is either watching one of her friend died by a lightning or one of her friend died by a sharp weapon on her heart probably. So, Chi-blocking Azula is the smart decision since Azula is too dangerous.
That whole interaction between azula, Mai, and Ty Lee at the end is my favorite part of the entire series. When Azula gasps after getting chi blocked, I get chills. It’s the first time she’s been completely blindsided and unprepared for a situation. And then my absolute least favorite line.. “the meat of friendship and fatherhood” happens to also be in this episode so it’s a catch 22🤷🏻♂️
Tai Lee technically said: I love Mai more than I fear you Azula Nobody talking about that When people say that love is a weakness, hahaha. Love is the only thing that keeps you standing in the face of danger.
To be fair Azula and Mei could have both killed each other. If this wasn't a kids show she would literally be murdering everyone with each knife throw.
With the precision she shows? Yeah! Kinda happy she didn't, not only because I was able to watch this as a kid, but also because not killing someone, not even hurting them directly, but still incapacitating them is VERY difficult, hurting/killing would be so much easier, but it goes to show how good and precise she is.
@@TheSuperNats it does but azula isn’t ozai, she charges to get her lightning. i’m pretty sure a knife could take her before she has time to strike? we’ll never know at this point
Azula's chance of killing Mai was at least 95%, Mai's chance of killing Azula was at best 5%. Even without going into the comics has Azula way to good reflexes, even Sokka managed to counter Mai's attack with his sword after all.
Only now I realized Mai's line for Zuko, saying that he should have at least looked her in the eyes before breaking her heart. Then, when he locked her, they have that little moment staring at each other.
„You miscalculated i love Zuko more than i fear u“ EPIC! And Ty Lee‘s BETRAYAL?? Also in the fighting scene u can see Azula‘s respect towards Sokka and him being a non bender. She doesn’t underestimates him due to her best friends being non bender and both of them take town whole bending armys within seconds. Also the betrayal was so well thought out ! We knew it since season 2 that there was something coming up. Also the prison scene witj Mai and Zuko was so powerful due to her telling him „u could’ve at least looked me in the eye when u ripped my heart out“ and seconds later he looks into her eyes before leaving her.
If you think about if Ty lee didn’t get involved. Azula and Mai would have probably killed each other. If this wasn’t a kid show Mai would probably throw a knife to Azula’s throat, heart, or eyes and Azula would have electrocuted Mai.
@@TheSuperNats true but wouldn’t Mai be able to dodge the lightening before Azula could try again. I don’t think Mai would let Azula kill her that easily
@@TheSuperNats Mai was so much faster than Azula's lightning, even the fire lord himself had to prepare and do some movements before being able to properly shoot lightning. All Mai had to do was throw knives at Azula's feet and she wouldn't be able to do anything powerful, if Azula dodged, she would have to restart the process all over again. Lightning bending is only powerful when your adversary doesn't know what you're doing/can't stop the process nor hide from you, if any of these criterias are met, lightning becomes very hard to use, even becoming useless/backfiring if the person you're up against knows how to redirect it.
there's no way to tell if azula was about to do lightning, she firebends with 2 fingers remember. But even with that yeah Mai could've stopped her even tho in a long fight Mai doesnt stand a chance
I’m so glad “That’s rough, buddy” got the recognition it deserves. I feel like so many reactors laugh/talk over it because it follows Sokka’s awkward line about his girlfriend. Only Zuko could top it. 😂
yeah i noticed it too, Since Zuko learned from the dragons about proper Firebending, he stopped making this rage sounds when he firebends, he just breathes. as he was taught by Iroh on the First Episode Fire Power comes from the breath, not the muscles.

Mai isn’t lazy, she’s just usually doesn’t care enough.

Azula was literally ready to kill Mai the only reason she didn’t was because Ty Lee saved her
Yeah Ty Lee probably didnt want to attack Azula but knew at that moment that between her and Mai, Azula for sure would've went for a kill shot. And it is also crazy because at this point in the show Ty Lee was closer to Azula
She did have two fingers out, which from her means lightning.

It did? That's great attention to detail.
His whole demeanor while fire bending changed. It's beautiful character writing through action
And he's not making sounds anymore either.
@@GamerGrovyle breathing instead of flexing every time he firebends
He has more dance moves because he's freer.

Best girl Ty lee casually backflips the same distance that azula has to rocket jump to clear... I love how op the nonbenders in this show are XD
She trained her whole life to do shit like that, didn't she?
I'm pretty sure Azula was just showing off at that point, and she jumped WAY too early (the gondola wasn't even on screen when she jumped, and we could see before Sokka's group left that the space between each of them isn't much more than 3-5 meters), while Ty lee jumped at the correct timing, so she didn't have to hover in the air, it's just that in that particular scene it looked MUCH further because of how it was done (not saying I could do that, jumping from a rounded square made of metal to another while above a boiling lake is pretty scary, not to mention how slippery the water vapor must make it be)
Ehhh well Ty Lee does it best, but Zuko and actually also Azula herself can approach these kind of jumps even without fire-jets.
a popular theory is that ty lee is of air nation descent, and her incredible acrobatic skills are partially due to that. her eyes are grey and if you take away her hair, her face looks remarkably like aang’s
Team Sokka’s attempt to start a riot and how it’s really done cracks me up😂
I must be one weird child because I would laugh when my parents fought. I still laugh at conflict...
fuse ain't that long, man...
Copy and pasted this, huh?
Damn!

Love you you beautiful human beings...going on a quest to find ur comments now!

Your reaction to Ty Lee Chi blocking Azula...is EVERYTHING! And then we have the decline of Azula...can't wait to see your reactions.
im still sad about azula like damn
That gasp that Azula makes when TyLee stops her attack is one of the most satisfying sounds in the world.

Also. Fire benders are completely incapacitated in the cooler, however, Iroh taught Zuko a technique to keep his body warm.

In season 1 finale before Zuko swam in the ice water, Iroh told him that airbenders can keep themselves warm with just their breathing. Zuko must have started learning techniques from other elements, which is why he was able to still firebend after being kept in the cooler.

Zuko : gets caught trying to cover for his friend meeting up with his girl
Ty lee : betrays the whole fire nation and Azula by supporting her friend to save her man
Friendship goals
It's more like she didn't want her 2 best friends to fight to the death. Even if she hated one of her best friends.
Look at Ty Lee situation here:
One of her friend is The Princess of Fire Nation and she's also a prodigy who's not only can create blue fires but also can produce lightning.

If you think about if Ty lee didn’t get involved. Azula and Mai would have probably killed each other. If this wasn’t a kid show Mai would probably throw a knife to Azula’s throat, heart, or eyes and Azula would have electrocuted Mai.
Azula wouldn’t finished Mai before she can let go of her knife. Lighting>throwing knives
