- Looking for a video on how to trim your schnauzer's (or dog's) black nails safely, without fear? This video will show you how I trim my cute Mini Schnauzer's black nails properly, in between groomings. You must take into consideration selecting the right clippers and understanding the anatomy of nails, so that you don't accidentally cut their vein! This video will also explain WHY you need to keep your dog's nails short, and we will share Scotty's own experience of injury due to long nails.
Schnauzer’s have black nails, which makes them hard to clip short. This is because there is a vein that runs in the nail called a quick, and if you accidentally clip it, the dog’s nail will bleed profusely. In dogs that have white or translucent nails, so you can see this vein and it’s easier to know how short you can go. But in Schnauzer’s, you can’t see through the black nail. What this translates to is that their nails can be chronically under trimmed. Scotty has never come back from the groomers with his nail trimmed short enough. This is likely due to fear that his vein will accidentally be cut.
Long nails prevent dogs from walking and running correctly and could cause sprains, breaks, or other injuries. A good rule of thumb is once the nails start making an obvious clicking noise, it’s time to trim them.

This is the first really informative video I have ever seen on clipping dog nails, especially Schnauzer nails that are sooo black. Such a sweet boy! I put my schnauzer with her belly up laying on my legs and do her nails like that. She is very patient and lets me make them round and smooth with the clippers.

Gosh the sound though!!! My schnauzer flinches and pulls away when he feels the pressure.
I know, it’s a horrible sound 😖 But long nails really are dangerous so it’s the lesser of two evils!
My Terrier also has black claws so I avoid cutting them. Thanks for the claw cutting advice.
I’m guilty of that too! But his long nails cost me $600 so I have to get over the fear 😂 Even the groomers are afraid! That’s what got him in trouble-they weren’t cutting them short enough!
