For the first time in over seven years of living vanlife, someone called the police on me. I was in Newport Oregon and the police told me that the town doesn’t like nomads and vanlifers. It was a very odd experience. But it wasn’t all bad, because my favorite area in Oregon was a short drive away.
I left Newport and headed to Cape Perpetua which is a beautiful spot on the coast that is a part of the Siuslaw National Forest.
I got to spend a few hours walking the incredible coastline and getting an up close look at Thor’s Well and the Spouting Horn. Both are natural water features on the rocky pacific coast surf.
Cape Perpetua is one of the most beautiful and unique places I’ve ever been and I highly recommend you visit.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

@@wyattfamily8997: "they just don't care". Yes, you're right! In many smaller communities, the power structure of the police is found in long standing habits stemming small town cultures.
A good example of this is the many small towns in Georgia who has absolute control over the citizens. Passing motorists soon learn how much when they are pulled over for a traffic stop, when they are issued a speeding ticket or other traffic violation and escorted to court (day or night) to pay the fine, in cash. At night, the officer actually wakes up the Judge who makes the man pay up then and there. After the Judge splits the fine with the cop.
One of my college day friends paid $75 for a speeding ticket. He said there was no sign of a lower speed limit. The sign indicating so were obscured by some bushes.
These communities soon gain a reputation that goes "avoid this town/city" or risk being robbed by the sheriff.
PS: there are communities that welcome folks who live in campers. They are good customers and also watchful eye in the community.
A business man I knew in Burlington, Vt developed a rapport with some local homeless people to watch over his boat, a 75ft tourist boat for paid cruises on Lake Champlain.
He gave them some money in appreciation for their vigilance.

Yeah, the OR coast has become more difficult for nomads, largely because of the increased numbers and some bad behavior by a few. For example, the casino in Lincoln City shut down their overnight camping because people would stay for months at a time. And the casino in Florence got more restrictive, requiring you to join their club thing. The less-than-welcoming attitude is one reason I've avoided the coast for a few years.

This is not a recommendation for Oregon but it is a problem on the Oregon coast. This is what I have observed. There was an interview with the mayor of Seaside and she was saying they are trying to find accomodations for their transient population. They have money to help but there is actually, according to her, no land to be bought to have ie. a short term parking are for people living in their cars and vans. I've noticed that along the coast between Brookings and Gold Beach, in the view pull outs, lots of RV parkers and given the look of their vehicles it seems they are having a problem even getting gas or moving along. I do notice that the Brookings police are pretty agressive. Sorry you had this experience but we live in times with a lot of homeless people trying to do the best that they can. These relatively small coastal towns are absorbing a big problem that comes to them from Eugene and Portland.

Image means a lot, would you have liked the area(before the talk) if the area had people living up and down the streets?
