A few years back, I suddenly lost my home base. I think even nomads need a familiar place to call home. There are times we need to settle in and feel at home. For the last few years, this has been a struggle. But there are places that I do feel at home, like Humboldt County in Northern California.
This is a day in my life, living out of a minivan.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

Out of all the various vanlife channels, this is one of the few that the creator of the channel actually continually lives in his van - No shop spaces - with showers and kitchens or hotel stays like so many others have reverted to. Nice to see a true vanlife channel.
Scott is real 😊
So true👍 find some others just pushing merchandise . Scott is the real deal ❤
True. I started to watch some van channels including this one from about eight years ago and this channel is the only one that was not cut off my list. True to life and that is why I stay and enjoy Scott's videos.
💯
Your honesty and humanity are such a rare thing to see in this age we live in, and to couple it with the humbleness of how you choose to live and how you seem to conduct yourself is inspiring. I very rarely comment on videos I watch but wanted to give whatever encouragement this may provide. The best of wishes to you in your travels through both mountains and valleys. May each transition bring just a bit more strength, peace, confidence, and joy.
Thanks Jayson
"My favorite snack is coffee." Please put that on a sticker, or mug, or anything.
Haha, yeah that would make a good sticker
A sticker would be cool.

“I’m not a morning person, if you’re new here, you’re all caught up.” 😂
Hey, you say you’re not a morning person but you sure have a sense of humor so early!😁 Have a great day!
Thanks. I don’t remember because I recorded that while half asleep
Home is where your heart is. So, wherever you get excellent coffee, that’s home. 🌧️☕️❤
Chippisweet said it right, home is where your heart is and great coffee makes it more better life.
Hope Humboldt is good for you for a long time Scott. I just ordered some coffee from them to support your local economy. Thanks for sharing your videos with us I truly enjoy them and you ne safe and take care my friend.
@DWsSouthernCookingBBQ that’s very nice of you do. I hope you enjoy the coffee
This is a great quote. It needs to be on a mug and/or Tshirt.
A steam donkey is an engine used to drag choked logs, from distances of up to 1 and 1/2 miles. That particular steam donkey was made by Willamette Iron and Steel Works of Portland, Oregon.
Steam donkey is basically a steam powered winch they used in mining and lumber industries.
Everyone needs a place they feel a connection too that makes them feel grounded. Whether your a Nomad or not. Enjoy the new coffee☕☕☕
Scott! You still have lots of fans are following you.. We all support you Scott for longing for home living ❤
I was born in Eureka, raised in Arcata and Fortuna. My grandparents are buried in the cemetary near the park you visited. Their parents immigrated to Humboldt during the gold rush.
A native, cool. Are you still here?
@@majipoorsbeardI retired to Reno NV, where I could afford a sticks & bricks as no state income tax and extremely low property tax.
@@krisb7465 we are the poorer due to your absence
Thank you, Scott, for sharing so much of your day with us. The casual intimacy of this episode made me feel as if I were spending time with a trusted friend.
Thanks Dexter
We were stationed in Eureka for 3 years when we were in the Coast Guard, I gave birth to my twin boys at a tiny hospital in Fortuna! We loved the area and parks!
Do you miss it?
I sold my 2008 Honda Odyssey five years ago for $1500 and I regret it; I miss it all the time! I have a CR-V now, which I like. I’m glad you are feeling more at home. Thanks for the laughs, Scott! 👍🏻
CR-Vs are well sought after. Maybe a bit more reliable than the Odyssey’s. But can’t go wrong with a Honda
48:22 I also worked in a “hostile work environment!” A large Health Ins Company in Rancho Cordova, CA. 10 years. Must have been the most stressful part of my life! Never again will I allow myself to be surrounded by that negativity at a job. It was awful. I do sympathize with you and GLAD THE ABILITY TO LIVE IN YOUR VAN and travel got you the heck outta there!
My daughter just quit a few weeks ago...same company, here in VA.
Life is too short!! Turn the page!!
Sounds like you found a good home Scott. It might take a little bit to sink in because your thoughts and feelings are constantly fighting you all along the way but that's our job as we get older.
Disect all the gargage that our brains are trying to communicate to us and just be.
Stay well
Stay happy😊
You are so Relaxing....you bring me down back to where i need to be, when i come back from work beeing HIGH and EXAUSTED...
I love ya bud😆
Ever hear the word hiraeth? It’s one of my favorite words, to describe the feeling of homesick, or longing for a place or place in time…
No I haven’t. Interesting word
Automobiles are going to be coming down. Im seeing more for sale by own on side of road than ever here . Of course, this is the East , might make a difference i dont know. However, I keep hearing there’s more and more used vehicles coming on the market. Check papers and online for sale by owner.
Im not a morning person, at all! I appreciate you sharing your feelings. It kind of validated, for me, what I feel , that it’s normal. I have a home and feel
Homesick and not sure where I belong. For me, I lost my husband 11 years ago and still haven’t figured out what’s next. Or, whatever it is I need to do or where to go.been downsizing for years - think about hitting the road. So many doing it now though, here. Anyway- thanks for sharing.
@@cumberlandquiltchic1 awww! I’m not a morning person either! I don’t get up until 1100 because I need my coffee! The only person who can get me up in the morning and cook breakfast is my grandson! When I babysit! I would have tried the van life if I didn’t have my grandson! I hope you’ll find some one to make you get up in the morning not every day but sometimes!🙏🙏🙏!
@@cumberlandquiltchic1Sorry for your loss. Home is a hard concept for some of us. I claim Kansas City, Missouri as my hometown, but I was not born here. It is the town were my late husband's family is from and our adult children live there. Downsize and hit the road to find your own home... it might turn out to be more than one place. I've been renting the upstairs master bedroom in my homebase, since my husband passed, to a young professional and that gives me freedom to come and go as I please and covers most of the expense related to keeping the home. Real estate has gone up and at least here a property is a good investment. Best wishes on finding your home.
Coffee is often my breakfast, so yes it can be a snack. Thanks for sharing.
Scott, it’s a very important to feel grounded in your surroundings.it’s great that you found that place again. Take care and safe travels.
Was going to say exactly the same. It's important to be able to feel grounded.
I couldn't even afford 4,000. My bestest friend had to help alot, thank goodness for him😊
Speaking of homes my cousin just bought the house my grandparents built during the depression. We lost the family home because of my mom and aunt's illness. Lots of memories growing up here and now it feels like coming full circle in my life. Like many have said here home is where gou make it. I plan on building tiny homes for folks at the home I grew up in to continue the good will my grandparents started. I'm blown away with the kindness my cousin has done.
Hi from a fellow nomad in Australia! I love watching other van lifers keeping it real as I’m so over the glamourised version with hot young things with the beach out their back doors! Ours is a simple life, with ups and downs but for me, it is my only option these days. I used to live in Oregon so I know Eureka, it’s awesome and I really enjoyed your vlog so thank you! ❤
I understand where you are coming from. I realized, after 7 years as a minivan nomad, that I missed a home base. Even static I feel that.
I always wanted to be nomadic in Humbolt County. One day again. 🏡
I love the old buildings... they're So much better than the new ones.
They were built better stronger, and with soooo much more class. They are so beautiful.
There were some other things that i wanted to mention but alas, i forgot them... Oh well i suppose i better just accept that my brain is showing its age, and be ok with that...lol
I'm glad that you have found a place that makes you feel at home. That's wonderful dear Scott ❣️🎉🤗
Hi Scott there’s always a pleasure watching your videos, I envy you. I live in Texas and the weather is hot for several months during the year, I wish I could move to a cooler place .
I could smell the coffee 😊.
That toast is done perfectly. Not really burnt. I usually break the yoke before flipping it. Then you don't have to worry about it...I see your attraction to one of the most beautiful places on the planet...
Haha a preemptive break
Thanks for sharing your day with us!
Thanks for watching
lol I just noticed the VancityVanlife button. Awesome.
That’s an old sticker that Chrome gave me years ago. I stuck it on a magnet sheet
Glad you found another coffee you like. My favorite when I was roasting my own green coffee was Sumatran light roast (city roast).
City Roast is the best
Come on Static. Your a hero for most of us. Just take a breath and relax. That feeling will desappear.
Judging from your comment I’m guessing that you wrote this before watching this vlog. All is well
Monday evening I so enjoyed your plain speaking about liviing in a van, youve made my evening relaxing. I love your coffee adventures and your walks. Wishing you the very best in your HOME.
Thank you
Ok, homesick again!
I lived in Eureka for 17 years, for a bit right across the street from that park. It's a great place to watch 4th of July fireworks!
We had a business downtown, too. My daughter and hubby still live in Eureka.
Humboldt county at its finest weather in this video. Lol
My favorite weather!
Haha, what fireworks? I couldn't see them through the fog...Still love the No Cal west coast. It's gorgeous, mellow and friendly.
✨️🙋♀️☕️...appreciate your taking us on this Journey today to a favorite place of yours..
The park with old time rail n lumbering items was an enjoyable stop over
🌿🏞🌲
Scott, I really got alot out of this video. Its one thing to talk about the nomadic life, but you show us how. I appreciate your back story and thoughts. I have been consuming your videos. Dont even know whats happening in the news the last week. How refreshing! Keep them coming!
Thanks Julie
Glad you're back in your fav place. On my recent trip to Mendocino, my dog and I both had the feeling you have of 'feeling home'. Love todays vid. Sleep well and enjoy your days ~
Thanks Julie. Mendo is a gem too. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip there
Greetings from Eureka! Not sure if you are still in Humboldt, but it was a beautiful day today with plenty of sunshine and a few sprinkles of rain.
The steam donkeys you were looking at were used in the lumber industry. They are portable steam engines that are often connected via gears to a winch to pull trees around.
I fell in love with Eureka when I moved here for school and never plan on leaving. People love to hate Eureka, but I think those people just need to look around the area a little bit more and they will find amazing people and places. Hopefully I will cross paths with you someday enjoying the beauty of Humboldt!
Willamette Steam Donkey used by logging company 1900's.
The steam Donkey is a winch used to pull logs long distances. Sometimes in the old growth forests you might see cabeling that was left behind. It would be neat to see one run.
Not a morning person myself. Decades of rising early, getting my 3 kids off to school & heading for work near DC (and in the Pentagon) took it's toll. As a retired single senior, living in the country I still can't adjust to or enjoy early mornings. I remind myself there are 24 hours in each day. I get to pick which hours I chose to do...whatever! And I do!!😊
Congrats for being retired and getting to choose your own sleep schedule now!
A steam donkey, also known as a donkey engine, is a steam-powered winch that was widely used in the past for various industrial applications, including logging, mining, maritime, and other industries.
Scott…u are cracking’ me up with you’re morning!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Life is a journey. Its good to hear that you've found your new Happy Place. It does show.
Have lie-in if you want to!
Enjoyed this update... Relaxed pace, interesting spots to see, a bit of cooking, a fridge clean, thoughts about vanlife. Much appreciated!
Thanks Otter
Unwinding from the day here in New Zealand, PS thanks for the tip about how long to stand coffee before drinking.
I love Ethiopian coffee. I thank you for sharing your feelings on S. California. I thought it was just me. When I moved back there in 2015 I felt like it was no longer my home for several reasons. I still have family that I will visit but I won’t live there. Glad to see you doing well.
Great Intro Scott -- that made me chuckle! =)
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for taking us around to all the interesting & lovely spots. Having a comfortable place to go to ground oneselve is so very important! Your determination to make life what you want it with good humor and a kind spirit is something ive been losing within myself - this helped with my perspective. Thank you!
Greetings from Vancouver Canada! I admire your calmness! 🐾🇨🇦
Thanks Ringo
Thank you for the video Scott- i burn my toast often😂 Your special spot is a nice one- peace, peace and coffee of course!
Excellent video! Glad you found a comfortable niche outside of Southern Cal with van life. So many positives, Scott. No loud neighbors for one. Thanks for the comedic opening too! Safe travels.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I just recently found your channel. Not sure how I have missed this one, but I'm here now. It's interesting to watch how you actually live in your vehicle and how you overcome the challenges of vehicle living. You share the creative solutions it takes just to live a simple life in an increasingly complicated world. We can all learn from you.
Thank you for another great video. Have beautiful memories with my husband walking Humboldt State Park❤ one of my favorite places is Arcata and visiting Klamath further North. I could go on and on about our travels in the Pacific Northwest, nothing better ❤
Thanks so much J&S. Yes, the PNW is so special
Yes coffee is certainly a snack!!😊
:) THANKS for sharing! ALL the BEST and Cheers!
Your so clever Scott! ❤ Soup is a good idea! Thanks for sharing .🙏🏻🕊😇🧂🇺🇸
I can relate. I'm not a native Washingtonian and the only time I feel at home is when I go back to the SE where I grew up and where my childhood home was.
Good video Scott! I enjoy watching your videos.
Yep, 😄 truly real-life nomad living down to earth, luv it.
Loving the walkabout in Port Humboldt seems like a very nice stroll.
Whattt, that is such a very genius idea you did with the stove. It's the 1st I've heard anyone do. sweet.
I csn hear it in your voice that you are trully enjoying your stay.
Great video tonight. You are really good at editing
Thank you. The editing on this one was especially difficult
Came across you tonight and very glad I did, you have an easy listening voice, very relaxing from Melbourne Australia
Really enjoyed you letting us in on how you've been feeling lately. Home and connection is a huge aspect of being a human so when there is a bit of lack we feel it. So glad you find a bit of it in Humboldt. Ok 1, love the stove bolts, 2, if you ever consider trying world roasted coffee for a seldom treat, here in Wichita, a little mom and pop shop called The Spice Merchant is amazing and they sell online. I tried Nigerian coffee and nearly cried it was so good. If you ever visit Kansas come in the Fall when temps are heavenly! You'd prob love the flint hills state parks too. Thanks Scott! ☕⛰🌄
Not all those who wander are lost!
The beginning of your video cracked me up! You need your privacy when taking a bath!! New England is home to me. In 1990 my husband and I took a job transfer to Florida. We were there for seven years. As much as I loved it, it never felt like home. We build a house, our coworkers became family, people very friendly, beautiful winter weather. We were happy there, but it just didn’t feel like home. We choose to take a job transfer back to New England, mainly to spend time with our parents as they were getting older. I don’t regret moving back to our home state, but I do miss Florida. When you lost your home base, are you referring to the house you owned? That is a loss, but you’ve made it work in the van. If I was single and younger, I’d consider van life as well! ❤❤❤ blessings to you!
Catching up on some static. Was super peaceful to watch you just doing life. Be safe out there. 😊
Dear Scott. We all need some roots to go back to. Bless your day. x
Love your show, Scott...You are simply amazing!
Chip manufacturers have a change toil and other ingredients in something as simple as a potato chip so no, none of them taste like they used to
I have not been to Eureka but you are the first to have said that it is a nice place! Now i will have to check it out
Wow you are right around the corner from my old house how funny. Welcome back. 🐢🐩🐶🐕🌊🌞🌺🌻☮️🌙🌈✨
Thanks, I’m enjoying it
I appreciate the intimacy that you shared in this video. A sense of place is so very important.
You know what ! The more I look at you the more I see my Dad's face , and I missed him, except that you are much younger than him, he is 73 now !
Very original and creative video
Thanks Roz
Right on! Ethiopian is very tasty. Light roast is much healthier than medium or dark roast. The Square in Eureka were the city park is, That old theatre has beautiful architecture. Cool Beans! I've never been inside Ft Humboldt. Apparently the Donkey pulls logs up to the mill using cable instead of oxen or donkeys. Try an immersion blender, Scott. They do the job and are small. If you get the little bowel attachment It can serve as a chopper for onions ,herbs or garlic. Organic Blue corn chips, my fav
Another enjoyable video, thanks Scott for the humor also. 😊
Love the long video and coffee talk!
Thanks Alecia
I suggest looking in several other states. I paid 900 for my van but it is a 2000 so it's old but a Toyota. Anyway, I see nice used cheap vans from 1500 to 7000 around here all the time. I would think you would pay a much higher price range in Cali but I have never been there, Scott, so I don't truly know. I was pricing vans around 5 years old and they were crazy high as well. I am converting my current van but it won't be what I head west in. When I'm not paying rent anymore. I'll be able to save a few thousand to get something I can hopefully stand in but we shall see. I don't know if I want to give up the gas mileage of the 6 cylinder yet. I wish I could afford a hybrid van because that would make my decision for me. 😊 Oh, I found where the dispersed camping is here. They did get rid of the ones in my favorite place and a few others around the lake but they left some as well. It isn't easy to find and they don't tell you about it at their office because I asked. And, I also bought a campground membership for 500 a year so I always had a place to go and it's a really nice small place in the country with a big pond. I can stay there up until Jan 1st as well. So, 2 more months and I'll be in the van. I'm starting the tearing apart process this weekend. Happy trails, Scott!
Love the longer video. Thank you.
Thank you
Scott...sleep as much as you need. The body is telling you to do it. Listen to your body always.
Sounds like Humboldt could be your new home base. Enjoyed the tour of the town. Take care.😊
I hope so. Thank you
Glasses are really nice Scott xx
49:00 a very good description of the feeling of home
Glad Simon showed up. I know you’re safe but it’s always good to be in a group.
Who’s Simon?
Oh sorry wrong you tuber
I thought I was responding to to Adventure time Louie sorry
Oh, haha. No worries
Early to bed and early to rise...well one can always aspire. After all, thinking about it makes it almost there, right? I mean, I watch a lot of van life videos. Your's is, of course, a favorite😂
Coffee is definitely a snack!😂and thank you for showing us Humboldt and Humboldt coffee…I’m in Florida but I ordered some online. Thank you!
Great video ! Thanks !
Scott remember that home is where your heart is. When you find a comfortable spot, then that is where you stay until you decide to move on
GOD BLESS you and stay safe 💜
12:22 I love that gray weather too!
I watched the whole video fantastic as always Scott thanks
Thanks Lee
Great video Static.Home is home with all the hustle and chaos of big city living home is the only place where i can find my peace of mind.Wherever that may be im glad you found it.Thanks for the extra long video.
Thanks Ivan
I'm living overseas now and I buy the most flavorous coffee I have ever drunk in a market next to my current stay. It‘s a blend between Arabica (sweet) and Robusta (stronger and bitter) types and the balance is just amazing.
Sounds like you met some wonderful friends out there & maybe a very special friend☺️. You deserve it. Glad you are content out in Humboldt. Hope I get out there next year. I want to see the beautiful redwoods so badly.
Your honest!!!Humboldt County is gorgeous I'm positive!!!
I believe home is where the heart is. Part of my heart is Missouri, part in California, and im not sure where the other part is. My body resides in pnw😁😁😁
Cool temp on stove to warm then flip the egg! LOL. Love ya!
Hi Scott watching now 😊🙋♀️
Hi Scott,, Nick here from Lisbon, Portugal, love your videos, keep safe on the road, love seen the places you go to, keep it up
You are great to spend time with :)
Hi Scott , another great video , a little bit of everything. Ahh ,that cooler weather in Eureka , I love it too . Glad you are happy there . If you need some extra money for a new van you can always take a job on the side as a stand up comic 🙃 . Always love your humor 😊
Excellent as usual, thanks for the video
Thanks Barbara
Your extra funny today 'humorous', I needed the chuckles. Hey, just a reminder that the Kinetic Sculpture Race will be taking place next month at the end of May over Memorial Day weekend in Arcata. Seeing the sculptures and talking to the people, at the beginning of the race on the Arcata town square, is the best part. And its a good way to pick up some new subscribers by doing a video on it or at least putting the event name in your thumbnail title. I might try to attend...Cheers !!
