Hiding Out In IKEA

Sometimes the weather in Seattle is less than desirable. On days where I want to stay inside, I will go shopping. Today I went shopping at IKEA to avoid the rain. And I found a few items that I need.
I bought a throw pillow. And I bought a pack of rechargeable AAA batteries. The IKEA batteries are very good quality and appear to be Eneloop batteries but sold for nearly have the price.
While I prefer to be outside all day, sometimes I find walking around a nice store or mall to be ok.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

It's a good thing to hang out with coffee in Ikea. I'm kind of a loner but I know that I need to have "human contact" at least once a day. You might not like the humans you're in contact with but humans are social creatures. You don't have to really interact with anyone but being around people is good for your mental health. If it gets unpleasant you can always leave.

Gosh, I agree with you in principle, but I too am a loner, and I could kick back in the van with a good book and a cup of coffee pretty much all day. I have social anxiety disorder, which to me means that I would rather have my fingernails pulled out one by one than to be forced to make idle talk with someone I don't know!

I bought a Carhart vest at a Home Depot and love it. Like you, I wear layers of merino wool and hardly ever wear a puffy jacket unless the temperatures are really low. Every one of my pillows (three of them) and any item that has the extended labels have them cut off with scissor. Once purchased, you can remove them. I do the same thing on inclement weather days...walk in malls and browse. I like the zippered case you bought for the throw pillow, giving it a cleaner and neater look. I really lucked out this winter and found a mountain vacation cottage to housesit long term...free of rent and utilities. 😊

Just the sounds of raindrops on the roof, a good meal in the prep, letting us into your cozy van, and watching you enjoy your fav coffee is always a nice way to view something predictable in this day and age of too of van life videos. When I backpack I found I got really good at finding random wall outlets out in public. Backpacking taught me everything weighs something and takes up space. That said, here in western WA, jackets get damp and this idea wouldn’t be a practical solution for soggy outerwear but perhaps a good way to deal with bulky sweaters.

@@StaticCamperVan because in the video you mentioned your pet peeve being when people recommend more stuff to you because of limited space, although this one takes up only a little more space than a regular blanket.
I live in a small drafty studio, I like a bit of draft for the sake of fresh air and don’t often heat the whole place because it’s pricy. This blanket is perfect for it. 160watts when on full blast which is nice and toasty 🙂 I’m getting my brother one for xmas.
By the way, I’m not sure about catalytic heaters specifically, but IIRC radiant heat tends to be harsh on the skin. I’m not sure if moisturising negates it.

Thanks for the update! I remember utilizing the shopping technique to escape from weather events when I was a kid (learned to play chess with the display sets in the department store). Found a good excuse to buy and share Yellowbird - thanks for the link and discount.

Coffee is free at IKEA when you have the family card...which I think you do because you have talked about the discount you get at IKEA. No reason to pay for the coffee there. 😉

Wearing natural fabrics next to the skin and layering provides warmth.
    Wool, Cotten, Linen.
A butcher shop is a better place to get your meats. They usually sell meats and fish from local farmers/ranchers.

So thank you for sharing your experience with it, you save some money trying to find a good organic coffee to drink. 😊

Our Fred Meyer store is always crazy busy over here in Yakima too. Partly because they seem to carry just about everything imaginable under one roof. Prices aren't bad as well. But that IKEA store at Renton sounds like a must see!

It’s manic here, with the shopping tussle for Christmas in full swing, seeing you happy with a pear and coffee, reaffirms the true pleasure of simple things. l am currently liking a cup of tea and a persimmon finely sliced (which are in season for such a brief time here). So I’m happy to leave excess shopping for ‘stuff’ we don’t need with money we don’t have, to other people. Cheers

@@StaticCamperVan Ahhh I Love little puppies! ... forgot to mention that your heated vest is Awesome!! I've been thinking about getting a heater coat, but I'm not sure about effects on the aura ... fleece-lined stuff has been carrying me so far ... have you heard of the cute little VESTA heater? ... maybe not so great for van use, but I'm gonna give it a try for heating this house along with these heater/candles I've been working on ... next resort, kerosene heater that I can hopefully run with veg oil? ... I don't think I can rely on propane if we happen to get the kind of snow we're capable of ... have an ez nite up there!! 😺💜

I had to look up the Vesta heater. That type of heater has been used on boats for years. I believe the fuel would be pricey unless you have a restaurant supply store nearby. I’ve never been fond of those cans of Sterno fuel as it’s difficult to see a visible flame at times.

I tested one of those heated vests for CRVL. It had a 30K milliamp battery. What I realized is that I don't really need more torso heat. It's my extremities that get cold. As for pillows, I have two and a "half" foam pillows. The smaller one goes under my knees when I sleep.
Have you checked the long range winter forecast for the PNW, what with a strong El Niño this year and all that? The prediction for down here is cooler and wetter.

Love a good cup of coffee. Windixie was bought by Aldi's. They have light roast coffee. Every now and then I get a new favorite mug. I can never have too many pillows around me and a favorite cup of Joe. You seem to be thriving. I miss your coffee chats live. Hope to see those again. I also hope you never have to take another fork lift driving job.

I personally love vests. When it's very cold, I find it's a necessary as second layer under a down jacket. When it's bit milder, I find it perfect to wear with a long sleeve (55 - 61 deg) or short sleeve (62 - 67 deg).
