When you die you lose coins so you can't cheat on hungry Lumas by dying and collecting the same coins over and over.
It could also be a remnant from the first game, where you lost your coins when you died because they represented your “score” in a level.

*Ahem* It's just a little disappointing because the whole point of these runs is finding alternative solutions and interesting tech to work around these problems.
That's why it's usually common practice to have the speedrunning communities help with these kinds of vids.
This makes it all the more frustrating when he doesn't even Spin before the Walljumps, which is the most basic of basic tech. I tested it and you can get past the coins in Rightside down galaxy.
These videos are fun and all, and maybe I'm expecting too much here, but if he does these challenge runs for a living I think he should at least do his homework and research it properly.

You can use the infinite flutter glitch in Spiny Control which might be easier than trying to do Chompworks. But there's probably plenty of prankster comets that could do a better job regardless. Nice job ^^
Mayro for Bowser Junior's Boom Bunker you can use Co-Op mode so Player 2 can pick up a coin and hold on to it. This can solve alot of problems but if player 2 holds A for the whole mission he won't drop the coin even after grabbing a Power Star.

(4:11) I remember encountering that when I was trying to play through the first Super Mario Galaxy coinless long ago. There was a coin in a particular level that I couldn't dodge, but I did figure out that the coin counter resets to 0 when you die, even if you hit a checkpoint while holding some coins. So, as cheap as it felt, I took advantage of this in that case.

The reason that a checkpoint respawn will take away your coins is because of the coin lumas, since they want you to collect a certain amount of coins, they made it so that you can't reset the stage while maintaining the coins to add a little bit of difficulty.

On the second star at yoshi galaxy it is actually possible. You dont need to go into the launch star where u are force to get a coin. You can actually do a trick where you are flying with yoshi called infinite flutter. Its like you can flutter infinite. If you do this trick you can skip the planet.

I have gotten a new idea for future video games, not just for myself but also for others:
What if I put a secret "Are you doing a coinless challenge" test in the first level?
Just for this test, the level would be built in a way where all coins are extremely easy to dodge but you have to go out of your way to do so.
If the player failed the "Are you doing a coinless challenge" test by collecting at least 1 coin, the rest of the game continues as normal, with coin hitboxes that are slightly larger than the coin itself, and sometimes impossible-to-dodge coin rows that are satisfying to collect for the players who have proven to not be doing the coinless challenge.
But if the player passed the test by not collecting any coins in the level, the rest of the game will continue with coin hitboxes that are slightly smaller than the coins themselves, and the removal of nasty coin rows that is done carefully to not be noticable.
The most important part of this secret mechanic is that the player doesn't know it's in the game:
When the game subtly changes itself to the result of the "Are you doing a coinless challenge" test, it acts as if it's just the normal game, how it always works, and never makes references to the challenge in the same way that other games usually don't reference the coinless challenge.
But would the opposite challenge? (Collect every coin) be possible?

the first level would have a room with many coins that are a bit tedious to collect,

Also, my opinion is that 8 coins are required. The video is titled “without *touching* a single coin” so I’d say that the six launch star coins are required since you *touched* them. As for the eighth coin, I’m not sure if it’s required, but if you have to touch it, I’d say the coin in Supermassive Galaxy counts.

no you'll rage quit, but with perseverance you'll beat the grandmaster galaxy prankster comet. i rage-quitted and left the game for about 4 years before picking it back up and finally beating it. LOTS of cussing was involved ...bad moods were had for a whole day at a time sometimes. but it's now in the bag and i can proudly say i'm a Master of Galaxies *:)*

5:19 I was originally going to make a video where I try to beat that star without collecting a single coin. I made it past those coins you were talking about, but I got stuck at the coins on the ramp later in the course.
ALERT: It is possible to beat it coinless! I found out that if you connect a second player, they can grab the coin at Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker and not let go of A, skipping it and making the game POSSIBLE to beat. Nice job on the vid tho! :)

i dont know if anybody has said this or not (and if it is to late to bring this up), but it is possible to have the coin counter at zero for the end of the game. when in 2 player mode for SMG2 there is a luma that follows mario and can pick up coins and hang on to them. with this you can pick up the coin and hang onto it without collecting it just as long as you dont let go of the A button on the second controller

2:13 Actually, the second star in Yoshi Star Galaxy is possible to get without any coins, in Super Mario Galaxy 2 Yoshi is pretty broken if you A to do a small flutter jump to gain extra high.
Do it and then press Z in the middle of Yoshi's flutter animation and then press A again so Yoshi will be able to do this flutter again and again, by this glitch you can go straight to the boss arena and there just be careful not to touch a single coin but it's not the biggest challenge.
20:31 You can use 2 players, one who plays Mario and the second one plays helpful luma, the helpful luma can get the coin as long as you want, use it and avoid the rest of the coins in the battle.

18:46 Slipsand Galaxy is possible without a coin because there is a Checkpoint Flag right before the boss fight with Squizzard. So if you die during the Squizzard fight, you can respawn at the checkpoint and your coin counter will be zero.
