Am I the only one who thinks Wes is the Bob Ross of mechanics? Instead of painting happy trees, he calmly tackles the most frustrating tasks with nothing more dramatic than a contemplative sigh and a wry joke. He’s like the anti-angry mechanic. Never a sharp word or a thrown wrench. Poor broken vehicles come and happy safe vehicles leave. Along the way we all get to see an expert do what experts do. It’s always a pleasure to Watch Wes Work!!

Wes, you're a genius. Not only the dropped wrench counting, not only the music, but the ominous cracking sound of turning the tap on your explanation paper, well, that was real cinematic mastery, displayed in this fine video production. This, combined with heavy use of sarcasm sauce, makes this one of the best repair/diag channels out there. In my opinion, of course.
    Thank you.

If I could add to Mr.APC's wisdom; when faced with the mechanical versions of what cop's used to refer known dipsticks as "frequent fliers", would it be fair and reasonable for there to be an addendum on those bids stating that because of known defects involved in repairs to that make and model, the bid will not cover issues X and Y should they become a part of the repair quote??
BTW, those were nice, very pleasing legs displayed on the porch clip, and your missus has nothing to be ashamed of, either!!!

Where I live there is only one single mechanic who will actually work on a 6.0 or 6.4. He charges $300 an hour and only works 2-3 days a week. Currently there are between 50-70 trucks sitting outside his shop waiting in line. He is in his late 50s and maybe has 10 years left before he closes up shop.

I did contract engineering for White Motors back in the 70’s. Inner fender liners on AutoCars (can you say Matt at Diesel Creek?) and Freightliner trucks were made from hand mock-ups on the truck, and then sent out to have the full size patterns made from them for production. This was pre CAD, and I believe the assembly notes said something like "locate fastener holes at assembly." That was a fun place to work, because you would draw some sort of a plan, then spend the afternoon in the shop trying to make something that resembled the drawing. Once you had a workable model, then you went back and made a finished drawing for the production part.

They are pretty robust but can be annoying to work on. The coolant filter mods are due to the egr cooler issues / scare but regular maintenance / non ford coolant seems to help a lot. not a professional mechanic, just a cheap kid that won’t pay someone to do the work. when i helicoil my valve cover bolts i just skip the drill bit. once all the threads are 100% cooked the tap works great w/o. i use a 1/4 drive ratchet and a 1/4 drive socket backwards where the tap sits in the 1/4 square hole on the socket and the specific size (can’t recall the size rn) barely engages on the ratchet’s anvil. makes it so much faster. i also use the helicoil install tool from auto junk and it’s pretty short. eventually the coil will get fucked too but it comes out with the bolt. all you gotta do is get new bolts. hope this helps my fellow 6.0 freaks

I feel your pain, Wes! I well (and, I suppose, fondly) remember at about age 15 on a creeper under a rusty school bus with the transmission on my chest and struggling to get it to slide into place! Things were much more simple then, but many similarities remain! Enjoy and appreciate your youth and strength and remember "Life is a sight draft dated yesterday"!

I used to work in a shop that almost exclusively worked on 6.0, 7.3 and 6.6 duramax’s for almost 6 years. I can without a doubt tell you that almost every other 6.0 that came into the shop had stripped out valve cover bolts. This was back in 2010 times. They were still fairly new. We tried everything to fix the holes without helicoils and there’s really not a better way that would hold up to multiple uses. Those bolts were the bane of my existence. We eventually just have the customer the option to either fix it, or we would silicone the gaskets and let it ride with whichever bolts it had left.

It makes me so happy that I already have a Cummins in my 2005 F350 instead of the original six uh oh. It is SO easy to work on, relatively speaking and looks like it came from the factory that way (after I corrected all of the janky wiring and hose routing done by the installer).

Nailed the edit, really funny despite the anguish of Navi-Cat Vietnam helicopter injection. I look at you, the only "auto" tech I watch, and my cousin who did it for many years before switching to watercraft(s) and I say to myself "how do you not have a stack of corpses?" I work not too distantly from you over in Michigan. Service truckin and shop mechanic, I hate what emissions has done to semi's and equipment.
Then I get a nice warm comforter and a cool pillow to wrap me and lay on as I watch you diagnose, repair, and explain the world's worst engineering graduates' disasters. You explain so well, all walks can follow you. A suit and tie guy has probably impressed a lady by "diagnosing" his uptown rig or hers after watching you. Not that those types ever would, but they'd tell the wrecker driver their two cents, and reassure the girl they knew the issue. All said, I pick up useful tips from you all the time. I wish and hope for you a bunch of 1950's cars and up to 1998 semi's as future work, with an unlimited supply of nos parts and knowledgeable parts people to pull those parts for you. Every dealership who pedals out work should know your channel, and anyone who isn't too up their own ass to learn on the wrenching side should watch you. I appreciate you having the patience to turn out customers and video, edit and educate. Most people or at least some who watch will never know how miserable it is. Especially rust belt, and plow trucks dripping ever so slowly but most inconveniently in your eye, or ear, with dirt and some salt. Anyway you cover all corners, so happy I found you those however many years ago. Appreciate your willingness to dive deeper and show your thought process and explain. Best of the best. Deserve every nice thing you hear and about 10 million subs and again, maybe some 220 Cummins, E6 Mack, 3306, 3406 Cat's DDEC II Detroit's or 8v92's, well you get the point. No can or cannot bus, just linkage. Thanks again, good lord that's a rant. Sorry for the novel lol

I really appreciate and enjoy your videos. It really makes me not mind doing some simpler tasks when I see all the crap you go through on some of these vehicles. About 17 years ago I used to work at LAFD shops and we had a huge fleet of 6.0 powerstroke van chassis ambulances and a few pickups. Cabs had to go in the air for almost everything! At least the van chassis had a doghouse inside that gave a little more access.

Mix some Lavender Oil & Permethrin to get rid of the Flies. Spray the outside of your shop with it mostly but you can use it on your clothing & spray your doors inside with it too. Works pretty good. About once a week or so

I worked for one of our local ambulance services and we had 4x4 fords with the 6.0. We blew 4 turbos on each of them. I think that engine was made by gremlins. Our local ford dealer refused to work on them. We had to have them shipped 165 miles to have someone work on them. I think the builder made them to screw with the mechanics minds. Great work and videos Wes keep it up.

  • @thomasbrown6900

Should you have this issue again (and you probably will), try the solid SS thread 'self-tapping' inserts. They are available from different companies in flange and non-flange options. To install them in a tight location, you can use a short bolt and a nut to lock the insert at the end of the bolt and of course a little red locktite wouldn't hurt. Just be careful you get it started straight. In regards to your service platform, slit a piece of rubber fuel line and silicone it over the sharp edge. That corner looks like a set of stiches waiting to happen. Have a great day and thanks for the great video.

Great idea on the repair kit for the stripped bolts. Just make the new bolt a bright strange color to remind you where it goes.
