As a small business owner myself, all I can say is that burnout is nothing to trifle with. I really wish you all the best in finding a better balance. You're obviously an extremely talented and intelligent individual and I'm sure you'll find your way. Selfishly, I hope it means TH-cam full-time so that I can cope with my own burnout by living vicariously through you and the other mechanics/tinkerers I follow . Good luck my friend!

That's a nice comment. I just left one myself, but different in tone. I'm very sceptical of social media as a fulltime profession. Especially now the music has stopped with the insane monetary experiment of the last 15 years. I wouldn't make a hasty decision of turning down work in the real economy. That's not meant as a criticism, but rather as a kindly worded warning not to put all your eggs in one basket.
The demand for skilled mechanics will only increase as there is a massive shortage of these expert mechanics. And it seems to me, TH-cam is extremely dependent on advertising revenue.
If you look at some of the extremes in social media, take a look at Stradman and that insanely expensive house he has a mortgage on. If the advertisement and endorsement income falls off a cliff, how is he supposed to make mortgagepayments that size in this new higher interestrate environment.
Because no, we're never going back to zero percent interestrate policies and therefor no artificially cheap mortgage rates.
Kudoos to each and everyone making a living on TH-cam....really, if you make your living doing this, that's great. But always, always have something to fall back on.
TH-cam has really only been around for a decade, who can tell what the next decade looks like...

Ive been a self employed mechanic for over 20 years and I can relate to everything youre going through. A few years ago I sold my large business and started a very small shop . It worked for a little while then people found me again . Im learning to say no to people and not worrying if theyre disappointed when I cant or wont do as they demand . Much respect to you Wes.
Don't know how much right or wrong I am since I'm not a business-man, but Wes could look at hiring a couple of people to take care of the work. Concentrate on maintaining quality with oversight. Have his knowledge and expertise available for quick turnaround. He can try this for 4-6 months and see how well it works out.
Finding good shops is pretty difficult as it is. And there can be a middle way where his customers can keep benefiting.
As for me at 37, I'm in IT for last 14 years, half my scalp is white, and in another 2-3 years I'm retiring. Can't take this anymore.

@@vaibhavdlv Yeah I've done similar to what Wes does (smaller, and not cars) and I'll tell you right now, most people like Wes or myself would rather lose 3-5 fingers than manage (babysit, really) people all day. Finding people that aren't idiots is basically impossible, so working alone it is. Less money in your pocket and more overhead, too. Some of us (such as myself) also saw their parents or grandparents run over-large, over-extended businesses into the ground. Keep it small, keep it simple, keep it from going tits-up. When you've got employees, you've got people other than your own family depending on you--fuck that, man.
@@shmackie It's worse--at least the customers give you money and fuck off when they're done. Employees are a massive babysitting exercise unless you're the luckiest person in the world and manage to hire someone good. Nobody but you will ever care about your business as much as you, and it costs me nothing (other than grey hair) to work 14 hour days if I want.

Wes, As a 74 year man who was an OTR owner operator for over 30 years, I can tell you personally that burning the candle at both ends and sometimes in the middle, will make you an old man before your time. Just one thing I will say is nothing is more important than your family except for God. Always make time for family no matter how busy you are, even if it means letting something else go. It will work out. You and Eric O are my favorite channels. I hardly ever post online, but just wanted you to know how much an old man enjoys your videos. Thanks for all you do. God Bless!

Wes I owned a small trucking company and I can relate to every word you said. I burned the candle at both ends and in the middle. I finally was in major burnout mode so I sold my trucks and miscellaneous supplies gathered up my money and retired. The best thing I ever did. I’m with you 100% and will stand behind you in whatever direction you choose to go. I really enjoy your videos and humor also your family. Best of luck ❤

Your channel is the definition of an 'adventure'. Something dangerous, or hard, often uncomfortable, happening to somebody else. Keep up the good work! :)
I’ve been where you are, bud, I’ve had a time when my brain would shut down and I would just stare into nothing with everything going on around me and expecting my attention. I too was the “go to” guy and i didn’t want to let my customers down. That said, I am now retired at 70, I have made many people/customers “happy” over the years to the point that I get no phone calls from any of those customers now just wanting to see how I am and showing appreciation. What I took away from all this is that a customer’s “happiness” is only a temporary state of mind. They will forget you as soon as they have no more use for you.
Find your own pace that you can comfortably handle, enjoy your job that you excel at, take care of yourself and your family, and as another comment that you received already, increase your prices and strictly adhere to some sort of working hours. There is a chronic shortage of real mechanics/technicians and the demand for your abilities will increase. In the end, reward yourself and your family.

Wes, I am a product of the early sixties when I actually knew what a tool was and how to use it. I started before, with the grease gun and somehow it snowballed into a life of wrenching for which I do not regret. In my final years of mechanicing, I had the similar problem of working 24/7 and a lanter was my pillow. Waking up from a nap under a truck or car and wondering how much stuff I did was wrong... starting off with the "check everything I did". I would reflect on in my first day of saying "I've had enough" so if I am going to bust my haunches, then its going to be my dollar and not build a business for someone else. I worked for a drunk who was paying sub standard and then missing pay days but always had a box of beer in front of him. I rolled up my boxes, went through some of his, and found the rest of my tools that were good tools. When it hit his foggy brain that I was serious, he says, "Yal never make it PAL!" but nonetheless, rolled up and left feeling all the sudden "Did I do the right thing" as it was scary times and no one had much work. I pulled into my own driveway which consisted of a trailer and a tarp over some poles to keep rain off of me while wrenching. I get out of my truck and greet my two buddies that were the love of my life.... my two dogs. I've told you this story before and none of it really changes except like yourself, wish I had done it sooner. My dogs are happy, daddy is home, they had my attention mostly, but this voice kept hollering Hey Morgan, can I talk to you. I go back to his rig and ask what he wanted, and it was Can you swap the engine out of my motorhome? Well cause nothing was really solid in life.. said yeah, I'll do it and promptly bid the dang job way way too cheap. God loved me that day as I found out the GMC motorhome was designed for a engine removal. Soon as I found that, I had that engine out in just about a hour or so.... it wasn't long, as it was much easier than a over the rad supports style. I had this job done so fast that the guy spread the rumor that "This guy is fast, good and doesn't charge a arm and leg... within a week, I had weeks of work setting in the yard!!!!! After that, it was no looking back except to say , why did I cheat myself out of the better dollars??? I apologize for poorly structured sentences and too long badly worded ways of saying that things have a way of working out. I for one would understand the "I quit" but buddy, I'd miss ya for sure. I went with this hospice thing to feel better but its just the same thing, I feel horrible but now I can't go to a hospital. I have to go to their place where they disperse meds and stuff and leave me feeling hopeless and helpless for ever getting past this pain. I will be seventy four in october and with the way things are going, I am going to cheat that guy out of a job attaching a toe tag on me for a while. So my pearl of wisdom here is... Keep your head up and smile, think of the good things that your able to enjoy as you have a great little family and many many people who do care about all of you and your family. You will have to adhere to the "knock off at five" for a long time as you see its only another five minutes and its done. Five minutes always turns into a hour or more

Just started my own service truck a month ago and was asked if i was going to do a TH-cam thing at the same time because my wife always sees me watching you guys. I said no way, those people are crazy. I respect what youve done up till now and even more so with changing your life to make it better for yourself. Best of luck to ya man. Ran my own rig for years. Definitely a lot of work out there. There is no way my customers would ever allowed me to film. There was never the time, nor would they want there equipment plastered all over you tube. Could you imagine rolling up on a 50 gallon oil spill and then broadcasting that on you tube???
I do some pretty wild repairs often out in the woods, would make good content but the comment section kills it for me lol all the arm chair mechanics and random idiots that couldn’t change a tire are almost as bad as the people sucking your ass

Hi Wes, thanks for the great videos. A couple of days after I turned 62 I had a mild stroke and quit working. It was hard. My natural inclination is to want to help people but I realized that there was an endless number of people who have things that needed fixing and only I could say no. They're still calling me 4 and a half years later.... and every once in a while I have helped/fixed something but it's pretty rare now. Life is too short to die working on someone else's problems. Take care of you and yours and let the world take care of itself
Similar arthritis of both kinds got me I still have days I can't say no but mostly it's my own vehicles & mothers house & her that get all my attention ( My mum is 91).Cheers remember the old saying "any day above is a good one".(I'm 65).

I feel for you Wes, I know exactly how you feel. I'm in emergency health, but if feels like you are farting against thunder constantly nowadays. I've always thought what a highly intelligent man you are, and the fact you do a drawing as it's easier than finding the words, proves this. Your drawing skills are amazing, maybe you could get a side job doing that! Plus, your gasket making skills are beautiful to see. You need a rest, a change, something to light your fire again. Remember you, and your family come first Wes, not money, not a TH-cam channel, look after Wes first. Trust me, I'm 20 years older than you and have learned the hard way. Thank You for what you do Wes, and your loyal viewers thank you too. I have many, many channels I'm subscribed to, but yours has always been my favourite. That's huge praise considering channels like VGG, Diesel Creek etc are in my list. Have a well deserved rest my friend.
I learned how to curse watching my grandfather work in these when I was growing up. Never seemed to be a shortage of issues, but he loved them all the same.
Wes man my heart goes out to you and the family your skill are endless and your educating us your viewers in all thing is as thorough I also had a job that tore me in half mind racing and despair at times all because I didn’t know how to say NO well eventually I learned and although it hurt it was less stressful that saying yes to every job that came my way ? Totally understandable Wes. As my father told me years ago "work will flow to the competent person until they are submerged". And rather than competent you're talented. I really enjoy every video regardless of the topic, and finding balance that results in more videos is great for us. But I can't help but feel empathy for your customers losing access to someone of your talent and ethics of doing the job right. They're about to realize how blessed they have been. I hope you find the balance that brings happiness to you and your family!
We as in the town I live in lost our only auto sparky recently & now have to travel 60klms to get any help so I can emphathise with customers but as with our situation you got go with the flow whinging about it ain't gonna help.

It was good to hear the old corn popper running. My neigbor had the same model. I think his late '40s early 50s. He was a real old fashion farmer. He milked by hand and used milk cans that he put in a spring. The state got after him and he stopped farming.

That sound I spent many hours on a B John Deere when i was growing up in the 50's ours was a 1948 same cultivator on the front and the rollamatic from end. Lots of good long days on the old two lunger 😂😂😊😊 thanks for the memories 🤗

Wes man does this bring back memories - my dad and grandfather ordered a B in 1941 and it arrived just before the start of WWII - well set up with overdrive transmission and electric start and ran on kerosene after being started on gas and was on steel wheels with the 2 row cultivator - it was the first tractor I learned how to drive - raked a lot of hay and cultivated a lot of corn with that old girl - great to set you getting this B running - I will be 80 this year and there still isn't any sound I still hear that beats the sound of and old John Deere !! Best to you and your family and thanks for sharing these moments with us !!

Sorry to say, but I know every nut and bolt you touched on that B. I am in my 60's now, but we had model B, A's, 60's, 70's, 520, 720's, and a 55 combine. We did all the work ourselves, including splitting them in half and pulling the crankshaft. You keep it up. Great job. We just sold my dad's farm, which still contained a lot of this equipment. All sold off and bulldozed now. :(

I've never owned a business, but if I was overloaded with work, I would raise my rates until it became manageable.
That used to work.
The problem is that few skilled individuals are left in the "skilled" trades. If someone is knowledgeable and reliable they'll be swamped at any price.
I now charge clients/customers a minimum of one hour just to pick up the phone. My phone seldom stops ringing.
@@841k9 Na, there is always a price. I got quoted for a driveway repaving, told an old timer that retired 5 years ago what the rate was. His jaw hit the floor, and he said he would be embarrassed to ask that much. Manual labor is in short supply. People should get paid what they are worth for wearing out their body. Wes, we love you and we feel for you, man. Growing up in a rural area in a farm-state I got to tell you mechanics like you are a critical part of rural life. You should know that what you're doing really matters to people. With that said you're not going to do anyone any good if you're in a burned-out heap. Take care of yourself. Learn to say no.. then learn to say no a lot more.
In my experience, all antique tractors that get restored are subsequently forgotten. At least that was the case for my grandpa’s fleet. He got them running, wire wheeled rust for two weeks, bought a $25 gallon of paint from Running’s, and parked it in the shed with the rest. Great memories!
