Knowing "pika pi" means "Satoshi" makes that scene in the first movie where Ash turns to stone and Pikachu's shaking him saying "pika pi, pika pi" hurt ALL THE MORE 😭
The fact that I could recall that scene from simply reading the comment despite having watched the move ONCE over 15 years ago is a testament to both the movie's quality and Ohtani's shockingly(pun intended) great acting.
I agree, I had a similar mindset at the time, and thought it felt very natural and intuitive just to tap the touch screen to perform all kinds of actions in Diamond and Pearl. Not to mention, having a ton of fun with the digging and excavating mechanic of all of those stones and fossils in the underground, throughout The Sinnoh Region.
Personally I never really liked it. No matter how intuitive and large they make the buttons on the lower screen you will always need to look back and fourth between two screens, because you can't feel the buttons anymore and they can change locations to anywhere. Plus pushing buttons is inherently fun! It's fun to push buttons even if theyre not connected to actions in a game, removing that makes things less manually satisfying
@@jek__ even before the touchscreen, I would memorize the order of my moves so I could press the buttons faster than I could read the moves. I also developed that muscle memory with the touchscreen, which btw, you didn't need to use, you could still use the buttons. The only control change that irked me was the removal of L=A, which I believe they brought back.
Sadly they've ruined an entire generation from being properly emulated just for this ultimately stupid gimmick. If it was anything but we would still have it today.
It's always funny hearing stories about how companies think their games are going to fail and then end up becoming the 2nd best selling video game franchise of all time
They didn’t think it would fail. They thought they were capitalising on the very popular previous games, and wanted to make it as best they could. They’re actually correct in that Pokémon was as popular when gold and silver came out the series was as popular as it would ever be. Generation one is still the best selling generation and generation two is the second best.
27:01 I always enjoy this fact. This happened because pikachu was a rare spawn in the first forest (the forest with all the bug catchers) and is probably the only interesting catch aside from a bunch of bugs, and bugs were especially terrible in Gen 1. Pikachu wouldn't do well against the rock gym, but was still such an interesting looking pokemon, and since many players would catch it in the beginning it was a very popular one that many people would talk about as something in common. If the developers chose not to put pikachu in the first forest, then players would not have talked about pikachu that much as an early pokemon they had in common, and the anime could've been completely different.
It's better than that, because the reason why the developer put Pikachu in Viridian Forest was because he liked Pikachu and didn't want him to become popular, so he purposefully made Pikachu hard to find.
Wouldn't do well? Nah, it wouldn't do SH*T! Charmander can very effectively Ember down Brock's Geodude and than use Growl during Onix's Bide turns and Ember immediately after. Pikachu even being slightly overleveled simply refuses to last in this battle. Even Geodude is a problem for Pika.
Gen IV is still my favorite, particularly because of the touchscreen functionality. I really loved being able to monitor my daycare pokemon and know as soon as egg was laid so I could immediately fly back over there. I really miss that function, honestly.
I miss the watch. So many useful apps, even if many sucked. The daycare app, marking app (I used it to mark which honey trees I put honey on), the type matchup app, the friendship checker, and more...
The Pokemon-Formula needs to be Shaken up. A lot. Starting at the Start: What about a Battle-Cafe or Fight-Restaurant sponsoring you?! Youre just one of many, but of course, as a player, your way better and you win, so the Owner says: „Oh, i’ve seen you have remarkable talent. HAHAHAHA!!! The dude feeding his face with fist-fulls of donut, while he was explaining the intricacies of translating as an art was hilarious. I don't even know what to call that type of humor, but if I had to label, it was the best, "subtle, left field" humor I've ever seen. Well played
I love the idea of Masuda seeing someone use a touch screen with a stylus, thinking it was lame, then adjusting the features in DPP so you can use them with your finger
I was ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with voltorb flip. I would play it for hours at a time. I don't know why, I'm terrible at number games like sudoku, but I loved it.
Another interesting fact about Pikachurin. Pikachu had made a cameo in the live action/animated comedy, Osmosis Jones. The movie is about a white blood cell "Ozzy" and cold pill, "Drix" saving the host., Frank from a virus. With the movie being about the functions inside a person's body, Pikachu actually made the cameo BEFORE Pikachurin's discovery
Bats and foxes are my favourite animals so seeing the baby Zubat and the baby Vulpix in succession actually made me tear up a little bit. And then a kitten!!!! Oh, how wonderful.
Can you imagine having a game where the catch phrase is “gotta catch em all” and then not releasing the Azure flute allowing players to catch one of the strongest Pokémon in the game and the only way to legitimately catch them all?
Honestly half my beef with the modern games is this exactly. Making a pretty big portion of the pokedex tiring, unlikely, or even impossible, to catch is such a dumb move. I'm still locked out of a lot of pokemon in my copy of Black 2 because they rely on internet services that have been discontinued years ago. And good luck if you have a pokemon that evolves through trading. The other half is just graphics. I might just be a boomer, but the 3D visuals just *really* don't do it for me.
Ah yes, the Azure Flute was too complicated. Pokemon players would be far far too stupid to understand how to select an item and use it. *sigh*, this is why we've been getting the same "Baby's first RPG" for 20 years.
I am from a German speaking country, thus grew up with the German versions of the first gen games. However never in my life have I heard of those rumors of a fourth Abra line evolution called Bin. Not even those first few slowly appearing cheats and walkthrough sites that rather spread stupid rumours than actual cheats and walkthroughs had Bin mentioned anywhere.
I find the beta designs for Gen 2's legendary dogs really interesting, because they look more like the pokemon that died in the burned tower. Does anyone else see a similarity or is it just me?
4:26 Wow, its almost as if pushing back a title's release to make sure the game is _finished_ is a good idea. Pokemon games' sales were declining, and there's a reason behind why DPP broke that trend.
"Fortunately, he aced the test and was hired as the translator" Please tell me this guy isn't the person who translated the "Caterpie evolves into Butterfree" question.

42:14 amazing how those playground rumours made their way all the way to Brazil, I remember hearing about the misterious "pikablue" in school being amazed at it
I remember the childhood rumors around ‚Bin‘ the mysterious Evolution from Simsala (Alakazam) here in Germany. Thanks for bringing that up. Excellent research !
@1:28 American, but my sister and I clean our games regularly and neither of us like having to "touch" them unless we needed to. We knew they were expensive and didn't play rough. 100% worth it. We're proud of our collection, especially that everything works.
I think it so touching how Masuda meant for older and younger generations to come together. Though it may be overrated or not even thought of nowadays, I still think of it a valuable way of familial generations to come together especially as older generation players get older.
The spirit of Pokemon has alwayse been trying to obtain something rare and exclusive. It started with mew, and continued on with shiny Pokemon in gen 2. I don't know if they knew at the time what they were doing when they didn't give out the azure flute, but it lead to my favorite glitch of all time, and Darkrai, and shaymin, were the Pokemon I had that no one else could catch. And pokemon diamond is still my favorite Pokemon game of all time.
I just realized something. Farfetch´d new evolution is based on Donxiote. Farfetch´d´s old evolution is based on Zorro (or a masked vigilant of a dime novel at least).
Aaaah I forgot about the pokemon mini!! My brother and I bought them in a toys'r'us in Germany when we were visiting our grandparents!! All the games were in german, but I remember all my friends were jealous because the system was never available where I lived. Good times.
Those translators' jobs sounds like my own job sometimes. "Here, do this. But don't expect any additional background information on what you're doing, despite it being crucial information. And also don't expect the rights to access some things in our programs, despite them being absolutely necessary for doing your job."
4:57 "These bugs are removed in the international versions of the game." I'm sorry but that's very wrong. I own a German, French, Japanese and American version of diamond and the glitch is applicable in all versions. I have multiple darkrai and shaymin, got to heatran by messing with the game, made the American one unplayable and made it to Arceus in the German version.
As someone that grew up with Spanish pokemon red/blue I didn't think of that I actually thought that there was a word "portaso" that meant slam but in another Spanish talking country like Mexico they say "chido" in El Salvador they say "chivo" Guatemala "Chevere". So for me, I believe my knowledge of "international Spanish" (from other Spanish speaking countries)was lacking and no thinking that a pokemon is evil by default and slams doors to others sound just stupid....
The names in spanish are decent, the problem is that many need to be pronounced in english to not sound like you had a stroke and as you may imagine, those that use the translations are not the ones that know english, let alone the pronunciations So "Caterpie" sounds like "Cater foot", "Squirtle" sounds like someone messing with the spelling on purpose and sounds like "Skirtleh", "Spearow " sounds like "Speharou", etc
The real question I wanted was why the lack of fire types existed for DP. The pokemon used for 80 percent of the game is the chimchar line, ponyta line, rotom oven. All the way until you get to Stark Mountain.
Something interesting about the DS and beyond games is that the touch screen loads just a tiny bit faster than the player can make decisions with the buttons. You can see and interact with the touch screen about a half second before you can do that through the buttons. Even if you are pressing the buttons to interact with the game before the screen loads or as soon as you see it you will still have about a half second between the time you see the options and when you can interact with them through the physical buttons but the touch screen is able to be interactive up to a half second before you can see the options. This will vary depending on the system and what is loading but most of the time your buttons will be locked out until about a half second after you can see the options.
Me: *Working on my 3d printer with this video playing in the background* Video: "A newly discovered retina protein was named after Pikachu" Me: *hears a new rectal protein protein has been named after pikachu instead* "A WHAT?"
0:50 "Deciding how to impliment 3D visuals took Gamefreak a long time as they wanted to ensure this new approach worked with Pokemon's art style" It's 2022 and they're still working that out apparently lol
I can't stand fingerprint smudges on my screens so I use my stylus unless my game just makes it hard to do, like Bionicle Heroes where the touch screen is the jump button.
Necessary? The stylus exists for a reason. Most of the things that were displayed on the bottom screen in Pokemon games could also be done by using the buttons. And those few things that actually needed the touch screen were smaller, more precise movements or needed a lot of swiping around (dressing up with tiny items for the contest, moving around in the Pokeathlon, quickly stirring a pot and so on) so the stylus would be far handier than touching it with your fingers.
@@Grey_Warden_Invasion not when I'm just basically button mashing. My fingers would be the better the choice as I can go faster without the stylus. So yes necessary evil.
“And we’ll have this awesome event, all you have to do is go back to spear pillar with a special flute!” “Nah too hard, release a shitty movie then give it away on a code card.”
I have a bootleg version of heart gold that’s technically in english but has the expanded lettering and has the japanese games room so it’s the slot machine instead of voltorb flip
Trust me, kids that don't know how to read don't have the attentionspan for pokemon. I tried teaching my cousins to play, and neither of them would listen to me. One was 5, and I think the other was 6. After a few minutes they ran off

The names in spanish are decent, the problem is that many need to be pronounced in english to not sound like you had a stroke and as you may imagine, those that use the translations are not the ones that know english, let alone the pronunciations
So "Caterpie" sounds like "Cater foot", "Squirtle" sounds like someone messing with the spelling on purpose and sounds like "Skirtleh", "Spearow " sounds like "Speharou", etc
Me: *Working on my 3d printer with this video playing in the background*
Video: "A newly discovered retina protein was named after Pikachu"
Me: *hears a new rectal protein protein has been named after pikachu instead* "A WHAT?"
Y’all better help my guy get 1 million vows. I got the day off so ima have this vid on repeat😂💪🏼
Fun fact, you can actually play all the Pokémon Mini games in the gamecube Pokemon Channel game.
0:50 "Deciding how to impliment 3D visuals took Gamefreak a long time as they wanted to ensure this new approach worked with Pokemon's art style"
It's 2022 and they're still working that out apparently lol
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum are still some of the best games.
They were afraid of using their fingers for the touch screen?
i never used the stylus with my 7 year old 3ds lol
I can't stand fingerprint smudges on my screens so I use my stylus unless my game just makes it hard to do, like Bionicle Heroes where the touch screen is the jump button.
Same lmao, I scratched my screen in a Giant Battle in Mario and Luigi tho.
I always used the stylus on any DS game I played. I *hated* getting my screen all smudged and making my screen harder to see.
I adore long videos.
I wish the pokewalker was still a thing, it was a great way to interact with Pokemon in your daily life.
Well time to get some popcorn.
I whole hour of pokemon 🍿.
You’re a huge inspiration to me and my gaming channel
So I wonder if the use of the Pedometer in previous games is what gave way to the egg hatching system in Pokemon Go
Love the compilation!
True fans know the OG Pokemon Diamond and Jade :p
When the hell is pikachu gonna evolve to a raichu
42:13 They named Alakazam Keanu I can’t 😭
I like how the devs also had an issue with touching the screen because of smudges. That has always been a necessary evil for me while playing pokemon
An hour? You spoil us!
“And we’ll have this awesome event, all you have to do is go back to spear pillar with a special flute!” “Nah too hard, release a shitty movie then give it away on a code card.”
Eh, I'd say it's more the third best pokemon facts on TH-cam, personally
40:33 OMG! I’m so proud of humanity right now. Leviathan is my standard nickname for every gyrados I ever had 💙
I have a bootleg version of heart gold that’s technically in english but has the expanded lettering and has the japanese games room so it’s the slot machine instead of voltorb flip
The BEST facts you say?
Just say the BEST (Title Of A Game, Series, Cancelled, Rumors, Glitches, and Console) Facts.
Hello pat did not expact to see you here
Trust me, kids that don't know how to read don't have the attentionspan for pokemon. I tried teaching my cousins to play, and neither of them would listen to me. One was 5, and I think the other was 6. After a few minutes they ran off
I can’t believe they really were about to fire that guy for a shitty pun, maybe they really hated Britney Spears
35:25 The fact that an American marketing team tried to change pikachu into a thunder cat woman with breasts is hilarious to me.
Yoooooo the picture of the translator is from a tourist attraction near where I live crazy!
