All Tennessee based distilleries use the Lincoln County filtration process except for Pritchard’s who got an exception. Chances are that the TN whiskey was distilled at Tennessee Distilling, who is like MGP and produces whiskeys for numerous brands including Kirkland (Costco) and Heavens Door.

Yeah, you don't need to be in Lincoln County for it. I don't think Jack lets people source from them.

Not all “TN based” distilleries charcoal mellow, but if labeled “TN Whiskey”, then it must (except for Prichards which I didn’t recall - thanks).

Not whiskey-related, but Trader Joe's comes out with their "Vintage Ale" 22 oz corked bottles between Thanksgiving & Xmas every year. It's bottled by Unibroue in Quebec. If you like dark Belgians (like Chimay), it is a killer deal (~$7 or $8 per bottle).

Loved this. Cheap/basic bourbon is what I drink most. For the grocery store blind, I'd love it. Don't forget the Kroger Stone Hammer Bourbon. Maybe toss in the VOB 100 for a measuring stick. That said, I think the comparisons are best when the proofs are similar, otherwise the higher proof seem to have the advantage. Thanks for another great one, cheers.

I have the 125 proof Trader Joe’s bourbon and am quite a fan of it. I found it at the Trader Joe’s in downtown San Francisco last year while there for a conference. Believe I paid around $30 for it. It’s worth finding in my opinion!

I’ve had a few different Trader Joe’s whiskies. One was actually labeled from Lux Row distillery. The other was a bottled at barrel entry proof at 125 and also came from bourbon square distillery. Both were well worth the price of around 20 bucks. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find them anymore.

They did a wheated bourbon as well a few years back. Wasn't bad it was pretty cheap also, maybe 15 bucks. However, my TJ has Wild Turkey 101 for 18 bucks. I'm grabbing that every time I go there for more coffee over their brand.

I picked up the TJ's Tennessee once and it's probably the only whiskey I've ever just barely been able to finish. I ended up mixing it with coke like 10:1.
That TJ's Kentucky, though, it's great. The only reason I don't pick it up more is because I can get Binny's Clark & Sheffield. I know the market is small cause you can only get it in Illinois, but I'd love to see them compared.
The real star at Trader Joe's is their Mezcal at $21. It's a dang steal!
TJs does have a few more bourbons on the shelf that I haven't tried yet, as well.
I'd be happy to help source any if you're interested.

Loved the video. Grocery store bourbon blind is a great idea. I know these offerings are below the level of most people's preferred juice. However, I love finding good value in anything. Knowing the TJ Kentucky bourbon is good is great news for those seeking value. I have more respect for economy juice that tastes better than it is priced than higher priced offerings that don't.

Jack Daniel's is actually not in Lincoln county anymore... not that they moved, but Lincoln county used to be huge back in the original uncle nearest days... now Lincoln county is 3 different counties I believe and coffee county is one of them. I live just down the road in murfreesboro.

  • @chadb.396

My guess for sourced TN Whiskey is usually Dickel or TN distilling out of Columbia. Jack isn’t known for sourcing. As has been noted TN Whiskey must be charcoal mellowed (Lincoln County Process) which describes the process but not a restriction to Lincoln county. Kind of like KY Bourbon doesn’t have to come from Bourbon County.

My dudes, the TJ's Kentucky Bourbon y'all were drinking is Barton! If you search for Bourbon Square Distilling, you'll find that it's owned by Sazerac, and it says on the label that it's distilled in Louisville. It's basically 4-year 90-proof Very Old Barton. I live in an area where we don't get VOB distribution, so I really like being able to pick this up when I wanna go cheap. The only downside is that my Trader Joe's also sells Wild Turkey 101 for $20, which is better in my opinion.

For the grocery bargain tasting, someone might have said these but I’ll say again if not; TJ has another Kentucky straight bourbon made from Lux Row, about $15 for 4 year age statement at 80 proof.
Kroger has an in house brand called Tradewater made at Barton 1792 roughly $25 for 90 proof.
If your sourcing any bottles from Chicago, binnys has an in house brand called Clark and Sheffield that could be worth throwing in the ring, $17 for 90 proof

Was in Minneapolis a couple months ago with a Trader Joe's across the street from hotel. Wandered in and saw the bourbon on the shelf and couldn't resist. Agree with you guys, it's not that bad. I was really surprised. Was well worth drinking in m room for a nightcap. Having said that, I will be using it when I want a low proof bourbon in a mixed drink where the bourbon isn't quite the centerpiece of the drink.

Side note, I was in Wisconsin for about a month and got addicted to their pre-made Old Fashioned. It's very much like candy, but I have a sweet tooth. I checked the closest Trader Joe's to me - which is near my Total Wine store - and all they show on their Web site is the Kentucky bourbon. It's a $13 bottle, and if y'all like it, I just may grab one the next time I head that way. But as I type y'all haven't gotten to that bottle yet. 🙂
6:43 The Old No. 7 is thin and watery. It tastes like whisky, and that's about all you can say for it.
7:14 Dickel does use charcoal - only Benjamin Prichard is exempt. And if I'm not mistaken, there aren't any distilleries at all in Lincoln County these days.
    9:10 LOO-uh-vuhl, not Looieville. But y'all aren't southern so I'll forgive you. 🤠
I love it when I accidentally post a comment before I'm done. 😂
11:54 It looks like I'll be making my first ever visit to Trader Joe's.
12:25 I worked for Walmart, including Sam's Club, for years, and I never saw a store brand liquor. But I escaped from that evil place three years ago, so they might have one now.

So to compare apples to apples, i picked up the Costco Small Batch for $19.99 per litre, or $14.99 per .750. And the costco is 90 proof. The costco BIB i got for $24.99 or $18.74 per .750. Id take the costco at 90 proof for the same price equivalent. You have to break it down to compare fairly.

I have the TJ’s Barrel Proof and it’s not all that great. It drinks every bit of its 125 proof and I love barrel proofs. It’s the only whiskey I drink over ice and it mixes well with coke😂. For $25 you can’t go wrong.

It doesn't say Trader Joe's on it, but there is also a bourbon called "Kentucky Best" that you can only get from there. It's age stated 4 years, wheated from Lux Row

I've heard good things about it and would like to try it. The two Krogers nearest me (central Indiana) allocated space on the shelf for it a couple of months ago, but there's never been anything there. The funny thing is both the "regular" and "sale" prices on the shelf keep changing even though they don't have the product. Current sale price is $19.99!

I saw a write up on the web that it was Barton juice...they were pretty convinced it was. I've had this bourbon and didn't care much for it. I also don't care a lot for Barton either so.... I saw that Kroger had their brand of bourbon. No idea about how good it is tho.

I have yet to get my hands on the Costco bourbon. It is not stocked at my store in N. Kentucky. 720 bottles came in last week and were gone in 1i hours.

The Trader Joe's Barrel Entry Proof I would describe it as a 1792 Full Proof store pick you'd be disappointed paying $50 for, but since it's $30, it's not bad.

Totally agree. I compared TJ FP with a 1972 FP store pick and Kirkland (Barton) SiB 120-proof. The first two were pretty similar, and the third was fairly similar but sweeter.
