    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    I miss getting more background history on a distillery or whiskey like Daniel use to provide.

    The only critique I have is that I like hearing about the background and history of the whiskeys. If we could get more info like that from Daniel that would be great. Other then that I think its fine.

    • @jonstothfang3800
      @jonstothfang3800 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Fully agreed. The nerdy backstory and minutiae is why I tune in daily. If I just wanted to see a couple dopes yelling about whiskey with no other information, there's a grillion other channels I could watch... but I don't want to.

    • @sgtsagara02
      @sgtsagara02 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I enjoy the shenanigans and the comedy but I think Daniel should be allowed to nerd out and give us some info. I think they need to balance the time between explaining about the whiskey and having fun.

      We can all feel the bond between these magnificent bastards in each video. Half of the reason their channel is so successful is because of the brilliant banter between these two fine gents. That said, I agree with Chris and Jon: A well informed whisk[e]y drinker will have a better experience and more appreciation for the craft than one who is not. Onward-ho in your quest to break the bonds of snobbery and making whisk[e]y entertaining again, but never at the expense education.

    1. Whiskeys we can find, even if it takes a little work
    2. More details with the notes on nose, palate and finish
    3. Revisit some common whiskeys you’ve already reviewed, to see if your tastes have changed

    So. What about doing scotch month? Take three episodes a week for a month and cover a region of Scotland. Lowland, highland speyside and island. Feature the most readily available scotches for most people.

    Honestly, I was a big fan of the OG "what would you be doing while drinking this whiskey" that used to be in the early episodes. Some were very insightful and some were hilarious - bringing it back would be awesome!

    I would like to see more readily available stuff especially for us internationals. There are still a lot of mainstream stuff that haven't been featured. Would also be cool to do themed series of episodes. So maybe one week it would be Islay week and you try different Islays and other week it could be Irish week and you try didn't Islays. Not only regions but also stuff like finishes and types.

    How about distillery day(s)? Pick a distillery and go over some of their offerings. If you are looking to add to the format, how about on Monday's you two get back into the leather wing back chairs and pick one gift spirit and go over it while having a good cigar.
    If you take to this idea, then I want in on it. Cigar Vault.

    I love what you guys are doing. Giving tasting notes on all kinds of great (and maybe not to great in some cases) whiskey, while mixing in all of the jokes and humor. I agree with some posts below though, a slight amount of more “story time with Daniel” would be appreciated just for more whiskey history along with the comedy. Also, thanks for bringing up the cigar and whiskey pairing topic. I was the guy that asked that question. You guys rule. 🤘

    • @JimmyLeg
      @JimmyLeg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, that was always fun, particularly when you attempted to blend whiskies to try to imitate another one.

  • @josephfaillace7252
    @josephfaillace7252 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    First Impressions, tasting notes, and a brief history. That should fill at least half of an episode, leaving the rest of the time for comparisons, questions, and channel management. Assuming of course the whisk(e)y on hand isn't a gift. For gifts, I think the donation should get a little more "facetime" and a little more in-depth discussion/review. We're pretty much there already.
    Question: What do You guys think of Prohibition Style Whisk(e)y's? Who does it best? Since most alcohol during that time period wasn't what we'd say safe or truly enjoyable, don't they mean they're attempting mash bills from BEFORE Prohibition? Is this is a marketing tactic, or a legitimate attempt to recreate a spirit from the period?

  • @thomasgraves1332

    I would like details so I can research it.
    Age, abv, batch, cask, type (single malt, bourbon, rye, etc). Is it sourced or actually distilled by the producer, vintage, date of bottling. Anything you can find on the label.
    Don't spend hours researching it just tell us what it says on the bottle, or sleeve. Then we can tell if we're drinking the same thing or something that's just close.
    Don't read the bottle for the first time while your recording, just take 5 mins before recording and make some notes. Anything beyond that is gravy.
    Thank you very much.

    Here's your format:
    1. Name the whiskey
    2. Pour the whiskey
    3. Smell the whiskey
    4. Give nose notes
    5. Taste the whiskey
    6. Give tasting notes
    7. Daniel can give some background
    8. Rex cut off Daniel cause its boring
    9. Read some questions
    10. Toast
    Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Why change what ain't broke?

    speaking of smaller bottles, I was looking up Westland (inspired by the recent peated and sherry cask reviews) on the Pennsylvania state system website, and discovered that their 3x 200mL sampler is deeply discounted now. It was $72 (for 600mL, and the regular 750mL American Oak is like $90), but now it's only $43 for the set, sooooo... I bought two. If anyone else in PA has been waiting for their chance to try Westland at a slightly less prohibitive price, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE.

    Maybe add a few drops of water to all whiskies above say 46%. Also I would love to know if you would buy a whisky again for your private stock at home (although i might enjoy some whiskies a lot when i am at a friends or in a bar, i wouldn't buy every single one).

    Guys, you've built this fantastic channel doing what you're doing. It isn't broke so don't fix it. You don't need to fiddle! I love the longer videos and I love to hear the details about how whisky is made and the stories behind it. I'd love more of that and more on whiskies that are expensive or unnatainable so we can see what they are like as we may never get to try them!

    It has come to my attention that one of my favorite authors Hunter S. Thompson was a huge fan of Chivas Regal.
    Now, I've looked but I didn't see that you had ever reviewed Chiva. If I'm wrong could you post a link as to which episode it appears in.
    Also, I would like to recommend that, if you can swing it for him to be on the show, to try and get New York Businessman, Gary Vaynerchuk to come in a taste whiskey with the two of you.
    He did the early youtube channel "Wine Library" so he might. Worth the asking.
    Thanks.

    Episode Format
    1. Notes - nose - tasting - finish - neat - with water - imagined pairings
    2. Info on the whiskey - grains/mash - barrelling - finishing - unique processes
    3. Info on the distillery - history - master distiller - marketing
    4. Comparison with other whiskey(s) - region - style - similar - opposite
    5. Attempt to blend your own - not always poor man versions - start infinity bottle (blendageddon 2)
    6. Viewer comments - or q&a segments for whiskey questions

      Whiskey Tribe it that case. What I do when giving notes is relate the tasting notes to an experience or story real or images. It seems that gives a little more relatability to the spirit when getting people to try new things or become more engaged in the act of drinking a spirit.

    Like other people have said, I too would like to see more information in videos. One of my favourite things about whisky is knowing about it, and sometimes I'll buy a bottle, ask myself "What did the whisky vault think about it?" and then watch the video and not really come out of it having gotten something out of it.
    "The Rex and Daniel show (featuring Whisky cameo)" is something I'm happy to watch, but it isn't what I subscribed for.

    First - thank you dearly for the live stream! That absolutely made my day!!! I hope you enjoyed tasting as I did sending it!
    Second - what would I like to see EVERY time? A-B comparison.. if it’s a rare or very local whiskey, could you find a more widely distributed similar one? If is a price whiskey, do you recommend a more budget friendly/similar one?
    The secondary recommendations I don’t think need to be 100%, but maybe something in the 80% range...?
    I know yours was done similar things in the past, but it’d be great to see every time. Plus, Rex gets more whiskey and more overall recommendations.

    You guys do this a lot already, but when trying any new whisky--especially ones that aren't national--if you could relate it to a more common whisky (or common blend) that would be stellar. I live in North Carolina and it's a state controlled alcohol situation which makes it hard to get into the hobby as deeply as I would like, but being able to "taste along" is always enjoyable--even if they aren't the same.

    Sommm.... for bourbon you need to use at least 51% corn... being an american product are you only allowed to use American corn or can you import it? For example in Mexico there is a shit ton of native different types of corns (blue) etc etc.... can they use that and create something different ?

    Fun Fact: The bottle in "I Dream of Jeannie" was a limited edition Jim Beam bottle, for a 1964 release of a "Beam's Choice" expression. It was made of smoky crystal, but was painted for use as a prop. www.metv.com/stories/jeannies-bottle-on-i-dream-of-jeannie-was-a-limited-edition-jim-bean-bourbon-decanter

    I’d friggin’ loove seeing a ”cheap week”, reviewing the red label, the Jameson, the Famous grouse etc. since many of us doesnt have, ya know, a vault. But i think the interesting question there is: is Jameson an inherently better Irish whiskey, than for instance Jim Beam is a version of bourbon? In other words, if you’re on a tight budget, but looking for a bottle that’s a true representation (or close to) of a certain region, which one should you get?

    Getting to try bunnahabhain 12, well since i am inbetween paychecks it twas only a sample. But i figure it will at least let me try an islay scotch so when i have the cash i can buy

    • @alyr9640
      @alyr9640 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Hughes. This is my current favorite. I could nose this for days. It's a super malt at a great price! Keep in mind Bunna 12 is only ever so slightly peated. For an islay it basically isn't peated when compared to the others....but it's fantastic i think. enjoy!

    • @johnhughes2058
      @johnhughes2058 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a side note, theres a bittle of JW black dirctors cut and JW 18 for about the same price which would be better in your opinion?

    • @alyr9640
      @alyr9640 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you are probably looking for the vault's opinion on this so i hope you dont mind me sticking in my 2 noob cents....personally i come at scotch with this philosophy: i generally shy away from big name brands such as JW and Macallan as they seem IMHO to be alot of $ for what they are and i attribute that to the branding (incidentally its why i refuse to buy my kids disney clothes...but anywho).....I am a housewife mooching off my hubbys paycheck for my bottles so whatever i buy needs to last me and be quality and there are ALOT of better, craft presented (natural color, unchilfiltered) malts and blends out there for the same or less $ as JW. My go to blend right now is Te Bheag - an uncolored unchilfiltered high malt blend. Bunna 12 is my best single malt right now (other than my springbank 12 cs which i splurged on with birthday $ ☺)....when i get another few $ up im going Clynelish 14 year old or Deanston 12.

    • @johnhughes2058
      @johnhughes2058 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A R believe me when i say that any opinion helps, because i too come from a land where i have to live paycheck to paycheck. Still splurging once in temibds me that there is more to life than waking up and going to work only to come back and go to bed. On this matter its only natural to wonder if its worth it to try either one or the other, although i am not deadset on it. Personally id like to get me some appleton estate 12 year rum, but in order to understand other alcohols i figured id give somethint that would have to be consistent a try. Big names have to be to a certain extent, usually otherwise they wouldnt be where they are.

    Exqueeze me I would like to point out that alcohols in plastic bottles could potentially be leaching compounds from the plastic into the liquor which you are then drinking. Plasticizers such as bisphenols ( there’s a whole group of bisphenols not just BPA) are frequently leached out of plastics. Adding to the mayhem is the fact that methanol and ethanol are two of the best polar organic solvents known and readily bind with other polar compounds (like in the plastic). I don’t buy or drink alcoholic beverages that are in plastic bottles anymore. It’s just not wise to do so in my humble opinion!

    My only suggestion: more non-American whisk(e)y please. I can’t help but feel that the Vault has been a victim of its own success, and is now almost entirely dedicated to reviewing bottles sent in by MBs. That’s obviously great in many ways (particularly financial!), but due to your location it has essentially made you the Bourbon and Rye Vault. All the amazing reviews of Scotch whisky and Irish whiskey that started off the channel have now been replaced by reviews of (mainly obscure) American whiskey that no one outside the US is ever going to see. I know you’re both peaty Scotch fans, but anyone who started watching recently would hardly know that. Bring back the Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Glenfarclas and Middleton please!
