I tried mm46 the other day and I was excited to try it. It smelled and tasted like men's shoe polish. All of our pallets are different. I always end up going back to Old Forester 1910.
I wonder how much cheaper our auto and home owner insurance would be if hurricane damage wasn't covered any longer? They don't want to cover my roof because it hails too often here. Yet there are people who live in places that are routinely completely destroyed and somehow keep getting their property replaced.
I genuinely try to hone in on 1 maybe 2 notes and let those take me on the journey. Kept getting frustrated thinking I need to be tasting an entire dessert table and only smelling rubbing alcohol
Great question - nose vs palette. I find it fun when both are good to me. It's like a fun surprise. I love to go back days or weeks later and see if it happens the same way it did on first blush. It's obviously a bummer (CAP 🤣) if the palette is not just a departure, but a let-down...
My buddy and I were drinking the Remus 8 and we both agreed that it was not an overly complex nose but it was an extremely pleasant nose all throughout One of those ones you could have just sat there and smelled for a long time before you even started drinking
I got on the Remus Repeal Reserve train with the VII, buying it a few times, so I’m glad to hear the VIII also “slaps” (still waiting for it to show up in my local Remus-stocked store).
Agree with others. Trenton: you be you. You have a gift. And if you think a whiskey smells of something strange (school markers, Plah Doh) don't hold back. I know I simply cannot describe what I smell in some bourbons, but I fail to think outside the box.
Seems from their reaction that having all 4 of these on my shelf and alternating among them day to day would be a slice of heaven . But since I can't do that , I'll happily settle for their number one pick . Kudos to Maker's Mark once again !
Saw the title for this video before grabbing the Maker's Mark Lost Recipe. Didn't watch it but picked up the bottle after seeing it on the shelf. Spot on with the flavor notes, almost like a nice vanilla icing note in there and sweet pastry. Got it at a Costco for $58 before tax, such a massively good deal and if I see it again I'm grabbing another.
just picked up the lost recipe bottle at Costco for $60 have yet to try it but im excited. Update, just tried it and it is in fact extremely goof, excellent finish, smooth and great flavors. An absolute steal at $60 I would 100% pay 80 or more for it
so glad you guys made this video, right after i watched this, I came across MM Lost recipe bottles at my local Costco for $59.99. Grabbed 2! Always Hunting 😊
Love the content, but when your scoring lineup is that close, I’d highly recommend tasting through them backwards. Transitioning from one whiskey to another does make an impact. B, C, D…water…D, C, B. So on and so forth. Results. Just a thought. Might change your results sometimes.
14:46 I've learned that with complex whiskies I always get more on the nose than I do on the palate. And this means that I often find that the nose and the palate, for me, only match a little. That's just how my nose and palate are, alas. Now if a whisky's more simple, then I'll find more of a match between the nose and the palate. If I might make a personal observation... Trenton is, clearly, a younger generation than Kurt. But underneath the "trendy" hairstyle and slang and tattoos he seems to me to have the same solidity of character that's so evident in Kurt. I expect that when he's Kurt's age he'll be just as genuinely down to earth and wise as Kurt is. He seems to be a son to be proud of. 23:40 Kurt to Trenton: "At this point, I would never look at you right now and say you're an idiot." 🤣 I've not tasted anything that y'all tried tonight. But I just poured a glass of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, it's one of the most boss whiskies I've ever tasted. This bottle was 64 bucks, and it's better than any of the high priced or allocated whiskies I've had a chance to try. You really don't need to spend a carload of money to get fine whisky (though it is true that usually I can't afford a $64 bottle 🙂).
Anybody here who got the MM Lost recipe in the U.S.; Can you please confirm the size of the bottle? Saw a pic online & it was 700mL, though it may have been from a foreign country or Duty Free store.
For me, I prefer if nose notes transfer to the palate. It provides a more harmonious sip. Now, if there is a bourbon/whiskey that has distinct nose and palate profiles, but you really like both, and it provides a nice contrast without disappointment, then ok. Not sure how often that happens tho...
Just came home from Kentucky with 10 bottles. Went to my Costco to restock the fridge and went, "what the hell" 11 bottles! Super excited to pop this one. A good problem to have is the other 10 I have to test. God, allocation season is fun?
Curious how MM lost recipe series would do against the heart release? Which coincidentally is the one you pictured at the lower left when tasting the lost recipe series
I have been drinking makers for years and it’s my favorite. Still trying to find another bottle of buffalo trace and really enjoy all of the Wyoming whiskey but makers mark is my #1
Great video gentleman! I may have to work a few extra shifts and look for the Maker's Mark offering. Looking forward to the Friday Night Live! Will be good to see Kent as well.
Just picked up the MM at my local Costco for 64 after tax. Cracking it open tonight, looking forward to it. Specifically went after it after watching this the other day.
I’m not a Maker’s fan (though, like Larceny, maybe there is some high proof version out there I’d like). But can’t go wrong with Four Roses non-yellow label. 😊
If the palate is different and just way more amazing than the nose I do love that experience. However when I’m looking for a regular sipper I prefer it when the nose matches the palate.
14:38 with something new or a blind, try - taste, nose and then 2nd sip instead - the perception from the nose can influence the expectation of the palate which (for me at least) is why if i nose first then its the 2nd or 3rd sip that will align with my lasting view of the bottle.

Makers Lost recipe is NOT the Heart release. So which did you review? Was it stave profile 1, 3, 0, 6 (roasted French mocha), 0 or the actual Heart release 2024 with 10 French iak staves
The first one. He read the label and it's the same I have. It's $60 at our Costcos here in Denver. I grabbed one and might go back for another. Hard to pass up at that price.
The Costco release is 1/3/0/6/0 stave profile and is labeled as "The Lost Recipe Series" edition 01 year of release 24, with the Mocha archived stave 111.9 proof, and looks like it matches the one they showed in the video.
Don't know where they got MM Lost Recipe for $80? Maybe online or secondary. Never heard of this being sold anywhere but Costco & it's always ~$60 for 700mL

How do they get vanilla and no "deep dark and rich" from The Lost Recipe Series? That bottle tastes like dark cacao to me. It does lack sweetness but it is rich and dark. I could see vanilla bean but not "vanilla".
hot cinnamon rolls with icing rolling down sides and a huge dab of butter on top; nothing better! We love you Trenton but you're wrong on the rolls! LOL
This doesnt have anything to do with this video, but please try mixing westward cask strength with Ardbeg Uiegedal. Magic. I know you guys are fans of westward.
I rarely bother with the nosing…doesn’t really matter to me. I’ll nose it right up front, just because, but after that I don’t really bother with it. It’s all about the taste.
There are some whiskies which smell so good to me that I have to remind myself to quit nosing and go to drinking. But with everything I like the nose, the palate, and the finish are all part of the enjoyment - and so for that matter is the appearance of the whisky in the glass, and the formation and flow of the legs.
Blind idea... 4 pours, taste and rank "with your nose plugged and not trying to smell". Next day, taste again normally (re-letter the glasses) between. Would be interesting to see just how much the nose drives the positive or negative and actually might change the taste.
From what I understand, humans can't taste anything that they can't smell. So that's why the "hold your nose" trick is used to eat something that is very unpalatable, that might make you vomit. Such is eating raw bugs, etc. in a survival situation, or if you lost a bet. Hah
Good for you. Some bottles are worth the extra price. Also... Lost Recipe is $60 and costco exclusive. It's basically a new wood finishing series but exclusive to Costco. People who were paying up to $150 on that bottle and trading for it on secondary are gonna feel a bit butt hurt but I've been warning people for months that it is a GIGANTIC release. I wouldn't be shocked if they produced 300k bottles of the heart release.
@@ewhitey18 I ain't missing out if I can't get my hands on them. Living in Kentucky and trying to get hold of an allocated bourbon is damn near impossible unless you want to spend double or triple or more over MSRP which I am not going to do.

This really comes down to which mashbill you prefer not really which is better due to the price. If you don't like the wheated Makers mashbill you probably wont like it more than the Four Roses which tends to lean towards higher rye content. Makers uses the same mashbill for all of their recipes then the just adjust every release off of that one single mashbill.
Trent.... You be you. Guess the whiskey. Write it down. Offer to eat a shoe if you are wrong. Let your dad do the "I don't think about what it is."

I picked up that makers at Costco today for $51.99
This really comes down to which mashbill you prefer not really which is better due to the price. If you don't like the wheated Makers mashbill you probably wont like it more than the Four Roses which tends to lean towards higher rye content. Makers uses the same mashbill for all of their recipes then the just adjust every release off of that one single mashbill.
