Neo has been preaching GT40P from day 1. That's why I used them on my fox and I haven't had any issues. Even my engine builder recommended them for the same reason Neo does. Great video!
I agree with you on P heads; they always seem to run a little better, the "plug issue" is really a non issue with a 90° boot and a plug wire heat sleeve. I even ran an incon twin turbo setup with them and was impressive on only 10lbs.
Thank for showing that man that's what am about to put on my 86 with 89 motor getting gt40p heads on there ya had heard that u need mac headers to work with them I got bbk header n now I know they will work thanks showing this.
This....is...awesome....news! I am in the hunt for GT40or GT40p heads and this just makes the choice that much easier. I was hesitating on the GT40p for that very reason. I am glad you were able to debunk that! Once again thanks Neo!
I've got both in my garage. But I'm leaning towards the gt40p. Frankly they do look better on paper and honestly running °90 plugs isn't a problem (make it work) it's not a hard job to do.
Man I swear you the best channel on TH-cam, I been watching your videos since you did the on3 kit on your black car 6 years ago. I’ve learned so much from your channel. Hands down you need to be over 100k subs
Cool video! My 85 hatch has been 12.20s with a stock 302 with stock e7 heads, 2810 race weight 650dp replacement intake long tubes 430s 31 spline spool stock t5 with a stock clutch. I have terry grove porting a set of gt40p heads for me and hoping to her into the mid 11s! Keep up the content!
Doing full Aluminum Gt40 top end soon on my 95-Gt,just because I wanted the simplicity and reliability but still that race car engine look I feel like aluminum heads give, gonna do a nitrous plate system, and later on swap to supercharger hopefully a keene bell style one or just a v3. But on another note if it wasn't for your videos I would gave up on the mustangs a long time ago,it's been almost stolen twice while on deployment, got pretty much stripped of all my bolt on's while I was gone, yeah a lot, literally got it back whith just motor, back seats amd suspension smh.But everytime I watch these videos on your channel it keeps me and all the active duty stang guys up in spirit!! Keep up the good work brother💪💪!!
95 302 HO in my four winns boat. Has the gt40p heads factory. So i ran it with a port/valve job and bigger springs with a nice cam and efi. Solid engine setup that makes a good bit more power than the 190hp factory lol.
If the spark plugs was any problem I would add a little bit to the header tube coming off the flange off the head to get the tube further away from the plug but there's no really bad issue about the heads-up far as getting the f*** wires on are you just one plug yes maybe a little more of a problem but it's all good
I actually found the Ford motorsports headers for my 95, tried a couple different headers I had laying around, they fit ok, but I wanted easier access to the plugs though. I'm gonna be running an old school V1 on E85 with a holley terminator x max. You'll see me at the track trying to get dialed in. Great content as always brother!
I have gt40p heads that are connected to a Hellion turbo log manifold and I just run 90 deg plug wires. And for removing the spark plugs I use Comp cams special spark plug socket it's a two-piece design makes removing the spark plugs extremely easy
So, in closing, use the P head for turbo application with a forward facing header. Plenty of room. If youre a nitrous or supercharged guy on a budget, run the 3-bar head.
I fortunately lucked into a set of 3 bar GT40s for $200... I do 5.0s and 5.8s but in e150s. I prefer to run Hooker 6910's and wasn't sure if they'd work with the plug angle.... I think I'll try some P's on the next one with less fear. Good video!
Engine design engineer here. Stock against stock the P heads are always going to be quicker. If you look at the NMRA classes that require stock heads, they all run P heads because they’ve found them quicker. Now, if you are porting them, the GT40 is a better head. You can get it to flow over 250cfm with the right valve (1.92). The P has a really hard time getting over 240cfm.
From watching the channel Dan, I have been wanting a Foxbody platform to work on. I was at work last month and I had a old customer come in with a car that I didn't know that he had. The 90 year old man and his son got out his 1988 Mercury Cougar XR7 that was parked in his climate controlled garage since 1995. Not a single speck of rust on the car anywhere. It has 50K on the clock and it has the 5.0L in the car. It's like a brand new car, interior is perfect and he wanted to get it running. His son put a new fuel pump, fuel tank, fuel lines, filters, and sending unit underneath the car. Wouldn't run for more than 25-30 seconds. Next he put a old set of injectors in it with a new fuel pressure regulator, Idle control valve and cleaned up the EGR valve. Still wouldn't run. Paid the shop to diagnose it and he was told he needed a new set of injectors and possibly a PCM. He was going to scrap the car! I said to him how much is the scrap yard going to give him, he said he would sell it to me for parts at 700$! I bought it from him, threw a set of 89 5.0L HO injectors in it and it fired right up. Has a vacuum leak from having the upper intake off so many times and had a cracked vacuum line. I bought a new upper intake gasket and I am replacing all the vacuum lines and I have a great running Cougar XR7 with 50K on the clock. My research came back as the only thing different from a Foxbody Mustang is the rear link arms for the rear end are 4" longer than the Mustang, otherwise the suspension is the same. Hopefully I got that right and I can have a nice ride on the Foxbody platform and still able to do a little bit of work and have a good running car. What do you think? Did I do okay with buying it for a starter and hopefully it is as close to the GT's as everyone says that it is. Good evening to you all and have a good Thursday tomorrow. Stay hydrated and have fun with your channel Dan! I will keep watching, liking, and passing on the videos as I go! TTYL hopefully to get your opinion on the car and my purchase and vision of putting a few bolt on stuff on it. Should be a good little crusier that no one knows what I have underneath the hood, LOL!
Not for nothing but use Taylor wires and they have 90 degree boots. Then run the wires under the header and put them on the plugs from the under side. What it does is first of all the weight of the rest of the plug boot and wire doesn't make the wire fall to one direction or the other. But best of all the wire cannot fall on the header period. And last heat rises. The over all temp under the header tubes is a huge difference. So over all the wires stay cooler and last longer
I had an early 97 explorer for years. I scrapped it only after pulling the III bar heads and EGR intake. I'm either going to sell them to offset the cost of some afr or put them on one of my 5.ohs. Glad to see I have some value in those heads.
awesome video bro really appreciate all the info. Just picked up a set of GT40p heads with a GT40 intake but had a quick question... what cam would you run for that sickkk chop and what compliments the GT40 top end the best?
I have them on E150 cheap stainless amazon headers fit fine they are shorty headers for Fox Body. K code mustang cast iron manifolds work well with them .
Just wanna say thank you for this video. I just picked up a set of p heads. Question for you and explore upper lower gt 40p heads and B Cam w 19 pound injectors be a decent 12 second combo on slicks with a 410? Also, what do you think the real horsepower is on that combo roughly?
Since I was a potential buyer .you already covered this with me about GT40 upper and lower EGR situations. You may have already covered that on channel. I was just thinking
I bought gt40ps long time ago. And also bought upper and lower intake egr from u. U hooked me up on a lower intake free on you and it was non egr lol thanks for that by the way
Yep sounds just like my blk car. Most we made was 550 something. I did make 602 on my blue car at the end of that video but thats when we were having boost creep bad. Had to go to a bigger gate
How come nobody talks about the aluminum gt40x heads? When I brought my gt40x heads to Joe and Paul at J&P performance in Toronto Ontario, they freaked out when they saw the flow bench numbers. Considerably more flow than regular GT40 heads. And in those days they matched up beautifully with a motorsport b cam.
Ford stopped making them years ago. Good luck finding any. I search long and hard, many times. But yes back in the day, 15 years ago, they were the best option
It's sad though like you have mentioned thoroughly in later videos and Livestream the amount of explorer and mountaineers that were destroyed from the cash for clunkers.....I remember all of that like a HD movie because I was working at a Cadillac, Pontiac GMC dealer here in eastern Maryland as a Technician when all that mess went on and remember the slow squeal of the can of death that we had to dump into the engine and listen to about a dozen solid vehicles die a slow death during Obama's Nazi spell and the sad thing is that with uncle Joe I see something identical or very similar coming before his 4 years is up with the way he's promoting and pushing electric vehicles heavily.....mark my words he will bring in some sort of tax credit and cash for clunkers spiff if you trade in your gas car on a electric vehicle and that will be the death of many of the LS fanboys sought after LS truck and van donors
If you can you can you use them to make a 347 stroker I'm looking I mean I made 400 horsepower to the tire now what did GT40 heads or any way I can do a little extra and make you know 550 with 347 stroker with GT40 heads
Flipping the piston, that's for raising the compression ratio right? Also, do they sell GT40P specific springs or do you need to get a spring pocket cut in?
Watching your videos inspired my stock bottom end 302 with GT40P heads i picked up already done with bigger valves, heads cut down to 54cc with a mild PnP job, N41 cam, RPM air gap intake and 650 carb. I've now ran into the header issue because the 302 is going into my 71' Maverick
We have a 99 5.0 explorer and since it has the heads and upper/lower intake already on it, what would be the next step to wake the motor up alittle more? Cam?? It is all time AWD
Thats is some sooper great info bro. Nobody should bitch about the P heads because them small block chevy guys have it way worse with plug to header clearance, that u can't even get a socket on the #6 plug that they have to use a stubby wrench or crows foot on the plug its self, lol
I believe the Bad Wrap was on #7 .....how you changing that without removing the headers??? You can't even get the boot off LOL I like the P's and have them on mine, but certain headers are better for that application than others for sure.
Hi I like to know few things I have a Lincoln LSC Mack VII 1988 I am planning to make few upgrades gt40p heads gt40 intake so what the basic upgrade I can do? Injector, gas pump what you recommend?thank you
Soooooo help me out please. Im running on an Old 1989 v8 302 automatic bronco engine, planning to overhaul it and add gtp40 heads and a e303 cam. What else should I do to make it better more efficient? Maybe a better water pump? Idk really
'88GT I put GT-40 intake, GT-40 (Y303) aluminum heads, the Legend B303 cam, roller rockers, mass air conversion with 75mm bullet, 24lb injectors, all other bolt ons, the car ran great, but not as fast as I hoped, until I put a 155 lph fuel pump in, unbelievable power increase, if anyone adds intake, cam, heads, do not use 19lb inj, they're garbage, you'll need larger injectors and fuel pump without a doubt, thank me later
I don’t agree. 19s will max at around 350 wheel. All those bolt ons you just mentioned might net you 280 wheel. Why switch them if they aren’t maxed yet ??
I have gt40 heads and intake with xe270r 114 lope and it runs great in my fox. I have gt40p on my 74 bronco 302 I had to use the explorer headers to make them work. I can’t find aftermarket headers that work with p heads on the bronco. I might try bbks if they clear the frame
Hello Neo! Great video and information! I have been debating which of these heads to go with and your video makes me feel better about going with the P's. Question though, I have a set of equal length shorty MAC headers that are CARB legal for California. Do you know if they will fit even with the 90' boots?
A friend just bought a set of GT-40P heads and upper&lower intake what kind of hp&tq did you got with stock bottom end BBK shortie headers. Thanks great content 👍💪👏🔥
@@Neomustangs care to elaborate? The afr 185s already have the upgraded springs bigger port + the benefit of being aluminum. Just looking for the option, I've found some gt40ps for as low as 240 near me most likely leaning that way.
Neomustangs, I have a mustang question for you sir. I have a black 93 foxbody GT hatchback that has titanium leather interior. I have never seen another with that option only cloth seats. Do you have any info on it
Sadly, I think there reason there are lots of 3bar heads, P heads, Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0s and roller 5.8s in junkyards is because two things. #1 they don't want to pay $200 and bust their butt all day getting them off for a set of used heads that are likely not going to be runnable off the vehicle anymore then spend to fix them up when there are aluminum Speedmaster heads as low as $650 that can be run on a stock bottom end and might need springs for a bigger cam or more rpms upto around $1000 for Flowtec 175s that both are likely to make more power even if they don't flow more they're easier to grind on and will allow more compression. #2 the other side of the junkyard is full of 4.8s and 5.3s in trucks, vans ans SUVs that are newer, have more aftermarket support now, come with great aluminum heads on them and most yards charge the same for heads, short and long blocks. That's the sad truth as to why you see so much Windsor stuff in yards. That said I like Windsors and LS both a lot, they both great platforms and offer a lot more capability, power potential and strength than the typical old junk SBC or even BBC you're likely to find.
GT40 parts are plentiful in yards probably because at this point, there's not many foxbodys available on the market like years past. So at this people have what they have. Not as much of a buying and building frenzy as year past. Especially since just to get a fox at this point you approaching the purchase price of newer used muscle. I'm glad I already have my Notchback now. Hate to have to get one today.$$$$$$$
So what's everyone using for vavle springs now? I've used Alex parts in the past with good luck but he has been out of stock for a while. Is the only drop in option the trick flow kit?
I’m new to the 5.0 and I’m trying to get an edge with heads. Thanks for clearing this up. Is there a better head to use over gt40 for a mild 302 that’s worth the extra money?
I have a question sir. I have a 87 converted to mass air. Gt-40 intake. 19# injectors 70 mm throttle body, basani headers. Off road h pipe underdriven pulleys flow master exhaust 3:73 gears. And it’s a automatic. Would it be worth it to put on a set of gt-40 heads . The cam is stock . Also should I put 1.6 roller rockers. Thanks in advance. Rich
Im thinking about doing the GT40 heads on my 91 while my engine is out (getting strut towers welded) my cousins has a spare set I might be able to get! Stock bottom end just full exhaust BBK longs, BBK x pipe no cats, 2.5 flowmaster exhaust! Not chasing HP just wanna put the engine back in with a little more power! What cam would work well with these? Even if I don’t do the heads? I have the GT40 tubular intake going on for sure tho!
@@Neomustangs not bad. I have a stock 88 that I’m looking to get some more power out of and trying to decide if I want to go the GT40 route or get a aluminum head.

Right on! Some headers are designed to make it harder but again... its simple work arounds.
Nicolas where are you located? Im about to pull 4 sets of gt40p heads and uppers and lowers from a junk yard this week.

Def a decent head! I have a pair myself on an engine somewhere in my pile !LOL
People forget, tons of GT40 drive lines in the marine/boating world. Tunes of 351 and 302 intakes, heads ect.

That's how I got mine on when '90s boots for my headers cuz I've run the shower headers
Do you lose horsepower using smaller headers
If you can you can you use them to make a 347 stroker I'm looking I mean I made 400 horsepower to the tire now what did GT40 heads or any way I can do a little extra and make you know 550 with 347 stroker with GT40 heads
Flipping the piston, that's for raising the compression ratio right? Also, do they sell GT40P specific springs or do you need to get a spring pocket cut in?
Good stuff Dano.
Ty
@@Neomustangs yessir.
You know your stuff brother
Ty !
G, what's that soundtrack in the intro?
Only thing I don't like on my p heads is changing my plugs..glad I don't change them all the time.
I get it
We have a 99 5.0 explorer and since it has the heads and upper/lower intake already on it, what would be the next step to wake the motor up alittle more? Cam?? It is all time AWD
Turbo. Skip all the other pieces go right to mild power than you can grow into.
@@Neomustangs Ok that may take more convincing with the ole lady but fingers crossed! Ha!
Thats is some sooper great info bro. Nobody should bitch about the P heads because them small block chevy guys have it way worse with plug to header clearance, that u can't even get a socket on the #6 plug that they have to use a stubby wrench or crows foot on the plug its self, lol
I hear ya.
The exhaust valve on the GT40P heads is smaller than the GT40. 1.54" vs 1.48" (same as the E7TE). The intake is the same at 1.84".
Yep and its funny how the P head flows more.
@@Neomustangs design of the runners/port
@@benharper1682 Right. And the P heads and E7 heads are 1.46 you typoed 1.48
I run a 289 closed chamber head on my 302. Do the gt 40s flow any better?
Compression is worth the hassle on a budget. Shorty plug or 90 deg boots ceramic as needed.
I believe the Bad Wrap was on #7 .....how you changing that without removing the headers??? You can't even get the boot off LOL
I like the P's and have them on mine, but certain headers are better for that application than others for sure.
Watch the video I showed you how to change it lol! Use a spark plug modified socket !!
@@Neomustangs Yeah ya did, ..on #5 plug, not #7 LOL
Hi I like to know few things I have a Lincoln LSC Mack VII 1988 I am planning to make few upgrades gt40p heads gt40 intake so what the basic upgrade I can do? Injector, gas pump what you recommend?thank you
Whats up NEO , just got gifted some Gt40p heads, springs upgraded and a steeda 18 cam. What plugs do you run?
NGK 4177
@@Neomustangs Thank You Man
Soooooo help me out please. Im running on an Old 1989 v8 302 automatic bronco engine, planning to overhaul it and add gtp40 heads and a e303 cam. What else should I do to make it better more efficient? Maybe a better water pump? Idk really
Go get a fox 87-92 or T-bird HO motor if you can. IIRC those are cast pistons.
Hey Dan what kind spark plug cables are those?
Dan do you have any gt40ps you want to get rid of?
Thanks for sharing, just put the 90 boot and some protectors on it. Dont buy special headers. I have yet to burn a plug wire up.
@@Neomustangs I will try. Also any tricks to pass emission sniffer?
Hello Neo! Great video and information! I have been debating which of these heads to go with and your video makes me feel better about going with the P's. Question though, I have a set of equal length shorty MAC headers that are CARB legal for California. Do you know if they will fit even with the 90' boots?
Thanks man! You will need 90 degree boots on the P heads. The 3 bars you do not.
I got a motor out of a 99 ford mountaineer anrd it works great
Yes sir !
And i rebuilt it and put a b303 cam and all new rings an bearings
A friend just bought a set of GT-40P heads and upper&lower intake what kind of hp&tq did you got with stock bottom end BBK shortie headers. Thanks great content 👍💪👏🔥
Should be a good upgrade. Stay with fox 19s
@@Neomustangs stay with fox 19s , what do you mean ?

Gt40p yes I like showing it can be done ford tough.
If im spending 6-700 dollars on used iron gt40 stuff would it be wise to save another 300 and just get a set of AFR as cast aluminum
Not really...
@@Neomustangs care to elaborate? The afr 185s already have the upgraded springs bigger port + the benefit of being aluminum. Just looking for the option, I've found some gt40ps for as low as 240 near me most likely leaning that way.
Do you use the original Explorer/Mountaineer GT40P springs and pushrods❓❔
No
@@Neomustangs What's best for them? I'm upgrading from my E7 heads to GT40P's.
I was in the right lane lol... 9.32 @149...
Can I put gt40p head on a 90 f150?
Great video God bless you and family..
Ty
Any reason why the gt40 heads would not work on a carb motor? Building a budget 302 for a 63 f100. Hope to use a perfomer rpm intake.
Work well
Are these heads apart of the reason my headers have a leak?
Probably not.
What do you mean when you say flipped pistons,?
Go watch the video I referenced.
Neomustangs, I have a mustang question for you sir. I have a black 93 foxbody GT hatchback that has titanium leather interior. I have never seen another with that option only cloth seats. Do you have any info on it
Someone probably swap them out
I checked the build info on the vehicle and it came with cobra leather titanium seat according to the build, ty for the feedback though
I don’t know about that but OK good luck
They def aren’t plentiful tbh.
@@Neomustangs especially in Michigan bro!
I have longtube headers will that cause a problem with gt40p heads
Maybe.
So what's everyone using for vavle springs now? I've used Alex parts in the past with good luck but he has been out of stock for a while. Is the only drop in option the trick flow kit?
TFS 2500-100
What about getting the heads machined to fit a dual spring like the comp 987-16’s?
I wouldn’t steer much from the path that’s already been taken. Probably won’t matter much if at all
Is there a specific set of spark plug wires you like for P Heads?
Not really i just use whatever Taylor cheapies they have with 90 degree ends. that fit ford. I also buy DEI plug protectors. Done.
I’m new to the 5.0 and I’m trying to get an edge with heads. Thanks for clearing this up. Is there a better head to use over gt40 for a mild 302 that’s worth the extra money?
