Back in the early '90's my girlfriends Dad bought a brand new '93 GT and left it for the dealership to install a new package SVO offered for '93-'95 Mustangs called SVO GT40....or something along those lines.....'93's got the same parts the SAAC just had approved -Motorsport catalog F1ZE iron heads, GT40 tube intake, 24lb injectors, B303 cam and they installed 3.73 gears....They rated it at 295ish HP and it was Still WAY cheaper AND faster than the '93 Cobra that also used the EPA's certification by SAAC.
'94's and '95's added the brand new GT40Y performance Ford heads and were rated those at 320HP....
My point was he decided he needed those....so took the iron ones off and while doing it installed the new and mysterious NOS 5115 Dry kit......
It's hard to imagine now... but in the '90's that GT was so unbelievably fast- more time was spent showing everyone the engine bay proving that yes....the engine was Ford....It made an impression on people everywhere it went....
Sorry the point...F1ZE was the head used for certification of the MK-1.....Hence the '91 date.
The F3ZE heads I bought from FRPP in '03 are still in the SVO boxes....sold as part #L303 fully assembled heads with the A50 springs and stainless valves cost me $200. each brand new....

Gotta be honest here. I would chunk those in the next scrap metal haul. Big ports do not mean big flow.

been there. i bought a pair of gt40 irons that were HEAVILY ported on the exhaust side. i ended up just buying a set of afr185 for my 347 and these gt40 irons have been sitting in my garage for the past 10 years.

Whoever did the grinding got stoopid hogging out the port floor. That other port looks like they got too aggressive on the roof also. Thin cast iron that also supports the rocker studs, which could now flex and break out.
    Wall art!
If you are going to use them with new valves, consider the Chev LM7 valves; 1.9", 1.55". Possibly bronze sleeves or ream and install bronze guides for the 8mm stems. Much lighter and use the LS6 beehive yellow springs, retainers and keepers. If the original valves were the 1.84", you could also use the 2.00" LS6 intake valves. Because so many have been built the parts cost is fairly low.

On a small turbo motor I'd clean up the ports on a set of gt40p heads and soften the chambers around the exhaust valve ala David Visser style. Maybe upsized the valves also. Those heads are over ported for sure! Especially the bottom of the runners, probably destroyed some of the ports better qualities. Just my humble opinion, YMMV.

Wow that intake port was massive. Wonder how it’ll seal up for you… and that song: talk about a blast from the past. That’s from that old bmx movie Rad iirc (well it’s a remake anyway).

First thing I'd do is check those throats and find the percentage. If those are too big these head will make no power. Only way to fix that is bigger valves

I'm curious how this build would do in either my 95 F-250, or my 66 Galaxie project.

300 for machine work.... Dave must really like you if that includes the welding lol. Surprised you haven't played with the cheap China clone aluminum heads yet... You can get them bare pretty damn cheap... The dart clone/afr enforcer casting works pretty well and can be built with decent stuff for less then a grand still.

  • @Cougracer67

Will those hogged out ports flow any better than a more conservative job done with a flow bench and a little science?

  • @jdwht2455
    @jdwht2455 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Gotta say that that was not a great buy. Those heads are junk as big ports are not necessarily great flowing ports. All you need to do is dress up the rough casting edges and maybe do some minor port matching on a low end build. Unless you have a flow bench setup, you have no idea what good/harm was done with such an uncontrolled and massive hog out of material.
Edit: also, poor gasket sealing surface. There are virtually dozens of SB Ford intake gaskets but doubt you could find one that keeps the seal (i.e. Fel Pro's raised area)
