  • The infamous Gt40P Heads. I've read countless facebook posts on the subject. They get as much praise as they do hate. Here is my 2 cents on these heads..

    GT40p is an awesome upgrade. What’s not to like about the best flowing Ford factory small block head. A few carbide bits and some elbow grease and you clean up the exhaust ports for some extra ponies.

    On the spark plug wires, I used chevy 90 degree boot plug wires. Taylor 64628. Perfect fit with plenty of clearance. Look exactly the same as the ford designed Taylor wires, just a different boot angle. Say what you want about using chevy on a ford but I needed new wires and that was the easiest route with best outcome.

      The transmission was put together with parts out of 7 different year, makes, and models of transmissions to upgrade it. The suspension and brakes are all from a different body style van. I have a set of Lincoln Aviator brakes i need to swap on....

    I bought some freshened Factory Stock prepped GT40P heads from a racer about 15 years ago and they made as much power as TW170 or AFR165 heads. They are STILL on the car and running strong as ever.

      They just simply dont. Theyre the best factory sbf head, but thats not saying anything, compare to a mopar or chevy head. Vortech had light years compared the the p head. A competition head porter can get about 245 cfm out of them and they flow really well at low lift due to being so small, but they wont compare to a larger / better cylinder head.

      You brought up C heads for why exactly? They may be the best sbf FACTORY head, but the fact that they dont even make the power that chinese castings do should say all that needs to be said. They outflowed mopar and GM in the 70s, definitely not by the 90s, well, GM anyway.

    If you know how, you can make E7's flow like expensive aluminum heads. The P heads require less work, and you can do it with stock valves.

    Using GT40P heads with upgrade springs, easy to find spark wires with 90* boots, and BBK shorties have been no problem. Use a cut down sparkplug socket and a box end wrench to change the two plugs that are close to pipes...there ya go.

    Around here you can’t find an explorer with less than 200k miles so they all need the valves done, springs, maybe some guides, etc… after all that you might as well buy aluminum heads. If you can find a low mile set for a couple hundred bucks might be worth it, but that seems more and more unlikely

    About to do the same with GT40 (III bar)heads. Why did you shim the rockers? This will be my first build and was curious. Was that to help match the longer push rods you went with? Maybe I will see the same geometry issue when I measure the rocker contact to valve when I install. I will be running the n41 cam with explorer bottom, stock pistons, stock rockers. Thanks for the info.

    • @fox-body
      @fox-body  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it was because I used longer push rods. I wasn’t getting enough preload with the stock pushrods. So I had to order pushrods that were a little to long. So shimming the rocker gave me the correct preload.
