Richie is a great guitar player in his own right, he has filled some huge shoes for bands that needed it. I like his "style." Equally great that he sings! Seriously underated as guitarwannabee mentioned below. Thanks for posting guitarblog!
He likes to extend his arpeggios up to the ninth degree like a jazz player. I love extensions and alterations, but sometimes audiences aren't ready for that much musical intelligence.
I have only just discovered Richie and Im blown away. Anyone reading this who hasnt heard of Guthrie Govan please please check him out he is a similar player and equally amazing!!.
@mrphyt0n have you seen the Richie Kotzen REH video? if you haven't seen that yet i suggest you do, that was way back before he change musical direction that video is "full shredding" if your looking for or wanting to see crazy arpeggios. also you might want to check out his project with Greg Howe. Guys like kotzen, govan, howe, lane and all other fusion guitar players are better than vai and satch. jazz fusion is a very complicated thing on the guitar because you play outside the circle
He's a great blues and soul play. Hendrix, Curtis mayfield Motown thing with a little more rootsy rock. Not at all the shredder that he was turned into as a young man. Even then on Fever Dream he was so much more interesting than any of the other shredders because he has taste. Great vocals and a complete musician. Whenever someone has shit chops they rip guys that have chops. News flash all the great soulful players like Vaughn, Guy, Otis Rush, Albert King have killer chops but do not rel
last time I saw him play he had a Fender Vibro-King of $5000, but what I can advise if you want to get this type of sounds is to change your line 6 and the guitar is also very important
he evolved, musically and technically at a certain point, so fender made him a guitar that he can play blues, as well as shred on. He's got a sig strat as well, but uses this sig tele most of the time because it sounds bigger and responds better to his playing.
No it is a thick neck. He just has large hands :) The TLR 145 RK only comes in one model and that is the one with the jumbo neck. I have one too and it is ok once u r used to it.
I have one...I had to shield it because of bad ground noise and replace the crappy pickup switch...other than that, its a fantastic guitar!!! Keep in mind, all screw holes are metric, so when you change the pickup switch, you need to bore out the metal cover a little.
I found that out eventually, lol. And what pickups, etc. I had just found out the Electric Joy model was a Starfield so all my hopes of getting the same guitar or anything close went down the drain. Must be Ibanez got sued because they don't sell it any more. At least you can get this, or get the pickups and put it in your existing Tele.
@MadSkidsBrah "TECHNIQUE is in the fingers, man. Tone is in the gear." Then why is it that Most guitar players can pick up any guitaer, plug into any amp, play it, and they will still sounds like themselves? Tone is in the player just as much as the gear
Yeah that's true. Les Pauls are really cool guitars but you can't cover much ground with them. Same with the SG and many other guitars. What I like about Teles is that even though they have their own distinct sound to it, it's well usable in many types of music. I guess it has something to do with it's simplicity: less is more. Super Strats on the other hand have even more options than regular Strats. That and the way they play is why I like them.
@oldskoolozzy Most people judge guitarist based on what they listen, because not everybody plays guitar, so he is on of the best cuz people like his music, not because what he plays is difficult. Not vereybody is consider a good player, just because they know alot, you need artistic imagination.
@n1ll3r You don't think so? Look at all the guitar players over the years.. EVH, John Sykes, Clapton... they change gear through the years, and they still sound like themselves... Take Clapton: In the '60's Les Paul and a Marshall Bluesbreaker '80's Fender Strat (with active Lace pickups) and a Soldano SLO100 2000's Fender Strat (passive pickups) and Cornford amp yup, still sounds like Clapton...
I have a line6 POD X3 live, and I really would like to get some kind of Richie's sound like the one in this video. Does anybody can help me??? specially with the amp model...
@MrSatanochio listen to his early works he's a shredder in his younger years, he evolve musically from shred to blues jazz fusion, check out electric joy and fever dream those 2 albums will blow you away and also his works with poison, greg howe, and mr. big
It took me a while to realize he sounds a lot like Tom Welling (Smallville) haha. Anyone know if this is really a Fender or one of those Starfield guitars? The pickups look/sound like the Starfield variety.
this video was very helpful, i will apply some of this thanks richie! btw i think you should go back in mr. big and make another album like actual size! no offense paul gilbert i just think your cooler in racer x. -Constance

tone is in the gear and in the fingers..because touch and pick attack have a hell of a lot to do with sound and tone, with that being said even some great players would have a hard time playing with my shitty line 6 30 watt(with a blown speaker) and my strat with super tight strings and worn down frets and high output pickups...smh..dang i need some new gear
@visa so basically you're saying that the the Chopper pickup and the Telecaster and the strings he uses......none of that has nothing to do with what I'm hearing? C'mon.... same old shit (the tone is in the fingers) everybody repeat over and over.... of course the way he plays is important.... but I'm talking about the specific sound and tone he uses... :-)
@dpsd Yeap, it's pretty harsh compared to rock...but these guitarists you named are jazz-rock, fusiona and rock-fusion guitarists...Pat Metheny is a Jazz Fusion player...I suggest you to learn a little bit more about genres. You could be misunderstood.
Okay he has the same style as Hendrix, I'm now gunna say something that will piss a lot of people off, but he is a better guitarist than hendrix. Just because Hendrix was at a very revolutionary point in music and is now dead doesn't mean he was better than anyone that is around today. Hendrix is actually the reason I started playing guitar back in the day, but people have got better at guitar since then, if he was still alive I'm sure people would understand what I'm saying a lot easier.
If that's your opinion, I respect it. However, I still don't like em, still doesn't make my heart go pitter patter. Just yesterday I was checking the Dutch Idols TV series and there was a typical session guitarist with a typical Dutch session guitarist setup - Hook Amp top, Bogner oversized 2x12 cab, some vintage fx and a sunburst strat - playing the same boring 'functional' stuff all over again. So for me, that's just not it. But if it is for you then that's cool with me!
Richie is a great guitar player in his own right, he has filled some huge shoes for bands that needed it. I like his "style." Equally great that he sings! Seriously underated as guitarwannabee mentioned below. Thanks for posting guitarblog!
Underated player, One of my favorites!
He likes to extend his arpeggios up to the ninth degree like a jazz player. I love extensions and alterations, but sometimes audiences aren't ready for that much musical intelligence.
At 4:50 I guess this is how he plays "Ritchie's accoustic thang" on the Poison Album ,
This guy is amazing, really! Bought myself an expensive Tele mostly choosing it over a Strat because of Richie! He's awesome.
Me 2!!I think i have a new guitar idol,Richie realy inspires me!He also wrote colorado bulldog for mr. big! It's one of the most difficult songs ever!
The great thing about his playing is the constant activity... simple chords are turned into funky rhythms with trills and some neat legato. Sl
Brilliant guitar player...thank you for some great tips Richie!
I have only just discovered Richie and Im blown away. Anyone reading this who hasnt heard of Guthrie Govan please please check him out he is a similar player and equally amazing!!.
I love that riff. I figured out how to play it and I just love it. It's from his song "good for you."
the riff at the beginning is "good for me" from the album Change.
Explained so nicely...with so much detail
All the speed and hammer ons and offs aside, his bluesy rhythm riffs are what make him stand out in my opinion.
An Amazing Virtuoso (MASTER OF GUITAR)
@BLaZe071775
yeah.
although the ones that richie's playing are from fender custom shop.
What's that riff at the very beginning of the video, from 0.22 to 0.58 ??? This is such a fantastic riff !!
super a ked to hra kotzen vyborne velmi dobre kotzen je moj najoblubenejsi spevak
such a complete guitar player

gilbert and kotzen are so different its sometimes hard to believe kotzen was gilbert's replacement in the same band
he evolved, musically and technically at a certain point, so fender made him a guitar that he can play blues, as well as shred on. He's got a sig strat as well, but uses this sig tele most of the time because it sounds bigger and responds better to his playing.
@MadSkidsBrah Its a Broad Statement... meaning the style you play is what your tone will be.
That opening riff is the best! Still can't work out where it's from though.
dude... strats are awesome
Does anyone here happens to know where was this video taken from? Was it taken form Young Guitar? His Hi-Tech Rock Guitar Dvvd maybe?
No it is a thick neck. He just has large hands :) The TLR 145 RK only comes in one model and that is the one with the jumbo neck. I have one too and it is ok once u r used to it.
He reminds of the guy who demonstrates the guitars at my local music store.
I have one...I had to shield it because of bad ground noise and replace the crappy pickup switch...other than that, its a fantastic guitar!!!
Keep in mind, all screw holes are metric, so when you change the pickup switch, you need to bore out the metal cover a little.
God it sounds good to hear fast playing that's not drowned in gain.
And that rhythm stuff is fucking beautiful, so getting stolen...
gosh, this is the first video i've ever seen with him.
Does this guy makes intrumental music ?
Sorry, did you ever hear one of his records or saw him live?
@nate11star tone is in the fingers, man
I found that out eventually, lol. And what pickups, etc. I had just found out the Electric Joy model was a Starfield so all my hopes of getting the same guitar or anything close went down the drain. whats the second jimi hendrix style song ???
this is a fender with gold tuners and a dimarzio chopper on the neck and a twang king on the bridge
@MadSkidsBrah
"TECHNIQUE is in the fingers, man. Tone is in the gear."
Then why is it that Most guitar players can pick up any guitaer, plug into any amp, play it, and they will still sounds like themselves?
Tone is in the player just as much as the gear
it's not as much about the length of tthe fingers but more the width of the base of your hand i.e. how far can you stretch your fingers apart..
I fucking love that tone.... it's the one I crave for my guitar....
Sorry that's incorrect - that's Richie's Fender Japan Signature Telecaster - it's very popular the gtr. player for Roger Waters swears by his..
Try playing arpeggios by stacking fifths diatonically,
its a good way geting out of the pretty standard sounding thirds concept .
Yeah that's true. Les Pauls are really cool guitars but you can't cover much ground with them. Same with the SG and many other guitars. He uses Fenders. Starfield was a subsidiary of FMIC.
i'm not a fan of telecasters, but I love the sound of that soapbar
@oldskoolozzy Most people judge guitarist based on what they listen, because not everybody plays guitar, so he is on of the best cuz people like his music, not because what he plays is difficult. Not vereybody is consider a good player, just because they know alot, you need artistic imagination.
is that what he meant oh *whipes sweat off forehead* i would never have figured that out for my self! thanks so much dude!! (i gave u the thumbs up)
@n1ll3r
You don't think so?

what's the name of this lesson vid?
I'm not pissed off, you're completely right man! :)
What is the title of this lesson?
Thank you
@MrSatanochio listen to his early works he's a shredder in his younger years, he evolve musically from shred to blues jazz fusion, check out electric joy and fever dream those 2 albums will blow you away and also his works with poison, greg howe, and mr. big
My idol
@bungholio80 i agree! kotzen, govan, howe, lane simply prodigy
I know that this question has been asked a bunch, but what is the second riff he plays? Do you know the name of the song?
Damn he's got big hands. Lucky bastard!
pls can someone tell me name of that song 1:33
is it a scallopped fret?
It took me a while to realize he sounds a lot like Tom Welling (Smallville) haha.
Anyone know if this is really a Fender or one of those Starfield guitars? The pickups look/sound like the Starfield variety.
He's a fab

@tibyv8 Thank you!! That helps alot!
this video was very helpful, i will apply some of this thanks richie!
btw i think you should go back in mr. big and make another album like actual size! no offense paul gilbert i just think your cooler in racer x.

Is that some kind of jazz thing?
Alguém encontra uma tablatura, velho...
3:00 i never thought of that... thats sick
Who the fuck is Richie Kotzen ?? This guy`s awesome !
yes I did!
@ReverendBow tone is a part of your technique - but if you plug Eric Clapton into i dunno... Meshugga's rig, then it wouldn't sound as Eric Clapton
Lol his voice has changed a lot
he had voice issues in 2012, since that his voice changed a lit bit
the quirky tune 'chype flux' is ritchie at his finest.
is this 2001?
He does have a "Relax, you're my friend" voice doesn't he?
Rely on them. Most self proclaimed feel guys just suck. Vibrato, big bends tone are all from the fingers and require serious technique.
That riff at 2:00 is badass.
@bungholio80 Hit the nail on the head mate.
PG has got the longest fingers (especially pinky) i've seen
His soul is black! He has definately got the funk!

He should do SINGING lessons!!
Please someone send me the tabs, i tried to learn ex a b and c by ear (my teacher told me to) but i simply can't. PLEASE!!!!
No he is from Philadelphia
@visa so basically you're saying that the the Chopper pickup and the Telecaster and the strings he uses......none of that has nothing to do with what I'm hearing?
C'mon.... same old shit (the tone is in the fingers) everybody repeat over and over.... of course the way he plays is important.... but I'm talking about the specific sound and tone he uses...
