He talks about the unemotional feel of shredding right before he ignotes his fretboard on fire with the friction of his fingers shredding. He can play/do anything. He once beat Forrest Gump at ping pong using nothing but a 1mm pick.

Thank goodness for Guthrie's clarity of thought. Communication is an art I do not often associate with top class players. I could listen to Guthrie's clear explanations all day. And it's refreshing to hear him say when he's not sure about something rather than pretend otherwise.
It was a joy to see him perform with Mr. Wilson on the Raven tour and I am very much looking forward to watching and hearing him play again in a month or so on Wilson's H.C.E. tour. If you haven't listened to his gorgeous emotive playing on Drive Home then do check it out.

I'm aware of a whole bunch of em... and yeah, I'm also aware that there's a whole bunch out there I know nothing about at all. But for me... Guthrie Govan is one player that's really captured my attention... he just seems to have it 'all together'. He has an endless array of tones... feels... chops... and ties it all together in a very musical way. He's a very human type player... very organic in his approach if you know what I mean?

Relates to the (all too familiar) questions, following with, "What you may be doing wrong". He then leads into ground up solutions broken down into concepts based on levels of proficiency, and finally punctuates the lesson with elegant summations.
Not sure what more anyone could want.
There is a heap of sage advice here. Thank you very much for all of this.

Guthrie Govan you have explained in such a way that I "get it" 100%, and that to me is nothing less than amazing! You, my friend, are God's gift to players everywhere! You have re-excited me to a degree I haven't been in quite a while! A sincere thank you seems to pale in comparison to the true extent of my true gratitude.

I love how Guthrie Govan plays a lot of different styles, technical stuff, and improvises on a level far higher than many shredders are capable. Yet, BLUES guitar is what he loves and considers himself as first. Unlike most modern technical guitar players these days who often underestimate blues guitar for being "technically simple", Govan would rave about BB King, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, SRV, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale and Yngwie Malmsteen equally. That's one of the main differences between guys like Govan/Hutchings and other modern shred players nowadays.

I love it when really accomplished individuals are willing to "break down" their ideas and techniques to a level that others who are less accomplished can keep up and learn.
Guthrie is a great player, a great teacher and communicator. I admire his abilities and I appreciate his willingness to share.

Notice how much he cares about the "listeners" ear not being annoyed. There's something to that. We often play what WE think is cool but never stop to consider our audience, whether they can actually hear it or not..... If you were playing for accomplished musicians it would matter a hell of a lot more than a drunk and high audience.... but I think we get the point. Don't just consider what YOU think is cool. That flat 5 became extremely popular through EVH, and Guthrie is 100% correct:: It is not a not to resolve on or consider as an actual part of the scale.(quote) .."I'ts kind of the worst note in the world, and if you land on that, you're hurting people, really, really jarring note, use it in context as an ornament, it's not considered to be a 'melodic note' in its own right" ~ I"ve never heard a guitarist talk of the flatted fifth in a blues scale in such a careful way as far as its usage is concerned. Just listening to this guy talk is instruction enough let alone hearing him play..... amazing

Everything Govan teaches makes absolute sense. I hate arpeggio player because it all sounds the same and the search for speed seems so mundane and vulgar. Govan knows the difference between elegance from mundane. I appreciate his devotion to the instrument and awareness of the difference between fast playing and fliperama repetition. (fliperama is a 70's reference to the repetitive motion of a pinball machine).
