- To celebrate Alien's 40th anniversary and in partnership with Tongal, 20th Century Fox is releasing new Alien-universe fan-made short films leading up to Alien Day on April 26th. Directed by Kelsey Taylor, the synopsis for "Specimen" reads: "It's the night shift in a colony greenhouse, and Julie, a botanist, does her best to contain suspicious soil samples that have triggered her sensitive lab dog. Despite her best efforts the lab unexpectedly goes into full shutdown and she is trapped inside. Little does she know, an alien specimen has escaped the mysterious cargo, and a game of cat and mouse ensues as the creature searches for a host."

First time I've seen a dog fight a face hugger like a real dog, most of them are just meat puppets in the movies. Love how the dog was shaking it like a chew toy lol.

Probably because it was a chew toy with rubber tentacles they gave the dog.
Aside from the dog in alien 3(or cow, it changes depending on the version), there wasn't any dog and xenomorph scenes.
Well it was a synthetic. If it was a real dog it might have turned out different as the face higher probably would have subdued the dog. I mean if a real dog did bite a face hugger it'll just burn through it's skull. But unlikely it would be able to as face hugger secreat a chemical that has similar effect to chloroform rendering the host unconscious within a split second. And since a synthetic is immune to such a chemical so was able to fight back (Well until the acid blood burned through it's head!)
Adam Duffield actual chloroform is really really slow tho, minutes to get some to sleep with it
We need a quality Alien series with realistic characters like this.

The robot dog was a cool idea.
Also, there were 2 barrels.
I was unclear if she had backtracked and that was the same barrel. Either way, I think we saw Maggie attacking a facehugger early on when it disappeared, so if there were 2 then she could have taken it out already.
Theres levels to everything. She just gave an amazing performance in the acting department. Her emotion was there her switching of voice tone through out the process. Props to her. Ridley Scott this is it chief.

I'm so happy it turned out Maggie was a bot, biting at the facehugger melted her face off and much better to be an android than an organic.
Really tense with a such an amazing atmosphere. Loving these shorts and hope to see android dogs in a future Alien movie now

Finally, a strong female lead that isn't contrived or simply made more masculine. Perfect, just like Ripley. This low budget 10 min short just knocked it out of the park. Well done.

@@user-fh9qt6eo1h Female representation is important, that's why. It's cool to see stuff that isn't needlessly sexualized, and it gives women a capable protagonist they can relate to. They're not "making it out to be a gender thing," people are simply celebrating parts done well within the short film.
She does have a very masculine energy. Without it she wouldn't be a "strong" female character.

This was excellent. Easily my favorite thing to come out of the Alien franchise in years. A very fresh approach, I loved the twist ending.

I know it seems like the dog is protecting her, but...
It released the creature from the barrels after it had detected it, and led her to a spot right underneath it. Pretty much the MO of most androids in the Alien franchise.

It may have protected her because of the behavior inhibitors but it still followed the orders from the the company.
It may not have released the creature from the barrel. The creature may have done that on its own.

@@brownkenazi6557 How is it an exaggeration? What about Alien: Covenant was any way reminiscent of an "Alien" movie. The visuals in Covenant and Prometheus were trying to depict something so precursor it felt like a whole new series. This short literally carries on the claustrophobic, utilitarian-future that the first film established. Covenant and Prometheus was an attempt at telling a creation myth with biblical-like imagery. I noticed the art shift for the alien series started around the time Alien VS Predator came into existence. The change in art choice really impacted the series' horror-thriller elements and turned them into more of a Philosophical exploration and action/adventure series
It came close but no cigar. 2 1/2 stars.

This is how alien should continue being. Alien, Alien 2, alien isolation and those shorts are true masterpieces
The synthetic dog ("Bark, bark, bark-bark!" Translation: "I prefer the term artificial puppy myself!") was just a tool to identify any sort of threat, our titular Alien or otherwise, so I don't think that they were using their manufactured four-legged contrivance as bait; even at the end, Dev was asking what the hell the facehugger was.
It was just a random aberrant soil container that sent their contagion/threat/probably contraband-sniffing robot canine into a frenzy. A tainted soil barrel that happened to be of our favorite xenomorph in nature.
At least, that's what I took from it; what the hell do I know?
All that being said--I'm really diggin' these shorts!
What if he just followed the orders from W-Y and oppened the barrel but then the behavior inhibitors prevented him from letting the facehugger kill her?

@@Tej132 Bishop from Aliens was smart, so was Ash from the first one. Androids, sure., but also able to blend in, i.e, shouldn't be so different from a real scientist. No one suspected Ash wasn't human, and Ripley had to be told about Bishop.

40 year anniversary and it built up more backstory, more tension, and more suspense in 10 minutes than nearly every horror/thriller film made in the past decade.

This was an incredible short. I sure think that the Alien Universe is so big that Fan Films should keep exploring it. Loved this.
Nearly every time you see a facehugger, you know it's gonna get someone. But that dog Maggie, was having none it's sh*t. R.I.P Maggie. You will be missed.
That was considerably better than the previous "Containment" film and genuinely entertaining. I found "Containment" to be an under-cooked mashup of Alien cliches.

The only short out of the whole collection that remotely aspires to any lasting artistic worth.
Director, at least, understands that there's nothing to surprise the audience with the available setpieces from the canon, so a lot of focus was put into polishing light, scene design. The actress does her job very well (far beyond the usual quality of fan films). Little details like switching from headphone soundtrack to immediate alert are nice, as well as the animal performance is always a welcome wildcard.
Thanks for making me feel like I haven't completely wasted my time on this anthology, dear "Specimen" creators.

This, at least for the most part. Tiny projects are far and away much different from full-fledged movies, but what they've accomplished here in a short time is wonderful. Bonus points that they did a strong female character real justice: *genuine* fear and vulnerability, *and* spurred into action over a companion in trouble and being left no alternative.

@@sparda9060 Yes, you're right. Everything ['cept Isolation], is watered down post Alien, regarding horror. But Aliens captured enough of it at least best, 'till Isolation came along-27 yrs later. Then Specimen. Aliens is also probably the best sequel ever made too, so there's that. And THE defining '80's action film, Cameron's best movie plus an effective horror.

The dog was a better character than most of the crew in both Prometeus and Covenant.
Even if it's a joke, I applaud the little touch they had when the work order was tossed to it like a ball, lol.

I'm....not convinced on that. Sure, it looks like the dog was attacking the creature mostly. But the dog actually releases the thing after they have already taped up the barrels, and it led her with barking to a spot right underneath it.

If this was directed by Ridley Scott, our hero would have certainly tried to pet the Facehugger....because reasons!
Wrong. It would be an 8 minute exposition about robots and stuff, philosophical ponderings on what it is to ponder...then two minutes of facehugger existential musings. Repeat with a sequel. Then another.
This was absolutely fantastic! The focus on building a legitimately strong suspenseful atmosphere, the visual direction, and even the performance by the main lead were all stellar. The being a short, one can't be too hard on the facehugger CGI, but it served its purpose for what it was there for (and not half bad really). Everything was incredibly done with the exception of one tiny nitpick being the end. I wasn't too keen on the final bit of her I'm assuming delivering one final death blow or whatever that was with the shovel. Just felt a little bit on the cheesy side, but that's nitpick territory there. This...this is a masterpiece of an Alien short. Kudos to the creators and get that actress and production team a place in Hollywood.

I couldn't help but feel compassion for the dog even though it was artificial, the reveal of that was done very well and not just a gimmick.
Its pretty well established both hinted at and revealed in the Alien verse that artifical beings are sentient creations capable of true emotions even if programmed to be limited in certain things. A dog droid would be fairly easy to create compared to a more complicated human style network and still likely learn, obey, be curious and well be a dog. It's technically still a living being. Just not one that's flesh and blood. The dog clearly was excited, afraid, angry, and protective, curious and more importantly in pain at the end. It was alive at least its own style of living.

That was excellent. I'm enjoying seeing how different teams handle the same concept. I definitely wanted to watch more of this story.
