    Of all the crews through out the franchise, the Covenant crew is by far the dumbest.
    1. Nostromo - They were sent there by the WY against their will
    2. Sulaco - They went there on a supposed rescue mission
    3. Prometheus- They at least went there with a noble mission - to meet our makers
    4. Covenant - They decided to change course last minute, go against protocol, and land on a totally unstudied planet. They get what they deserve.

      youtubeuser Not anti religion here, in fact I enjoy characters that are driven by faith in stories, even irrationally even as faith. So follow me here:
      It’s Shaw’s unyielding faith, even after Prometheus, when she asked the beheaded David for her cross, that drives her to go to the engineers planet to “talk to” humanity’s creators. Boy did that backfire!
      The captain of the Covenant, who was deemed unfit for command by wayland industries, was a man of faith, who’s faith drove him to the engineers uncharted planet, not the vetted colony planet as his num 2 Daniels told him. Boy did that backfire
      David’s “belief” of his superiority as seen in the opening scene between him and Weyland.
      David:
      “If you created me, who created you”...
      “You seek your creator, I’m looking at mine. I will serve you, yet you are human. You will die, I will not”
      Weyland
      “Bring me the tea....and your shine box”
      David’s faith in his own “perfection” was flawed when WALTER pointed out his error in crediting a quote. I guess going a decade without a maintenance check will “fuck up your perfect composure” as the covenant capt told him.
      There’s always a place for faith, but logic and reason would tell you that since the engineers tried to kill us and the pathogen was amazingly aggressive, best to “nuke the site from orbit,” cuz it’s the only way to be sure.
      Logic would have told the covenant to go to the vetted planet, not an uncharted world with 2000 souls on board.
      Weyland is guilty too. He created as close to perfection as possible, and instead of humbly educating his creation that “to error is human”, he tells him to “go grab your shine box”, forever cementing David’s hatred of humans....

      @@SamDNVS Yes, but I think the Covenant crew was dumber than the Prometheus crew, since it is stupid to take the helmets off but it is even more stupid to wear no helmets and suits from the beginning (after their landing on the planet, the Covenant crew looked more like a school excursion than a serious space expedition).

But as long as there is money to be made, movies will be made. We are bound to get a good one eventually.

      I think Prometheus was a lot better, more rewatchable certainly. Visually very nice and more sophisticated than what was written about it. Covenant was less nerdy, more of a basic thriller on many levels.

      George Zhang as soon as we see there's two characters that look the same with one as a villain...we know were going to get a scene of confusing the two haha..with hopefully the cliche meter not being too full and going for the "no, shoot him, I'm the real one!" nonsense..
      But then they even.show him cutting his hair and oh, woops, even more obvious. I get maaaaybe if they want to go with him trying to civilize himself a little bit for their arrival but did they really think we would be surprised by that reveal? I mean since they had him act odd on the ship during the xeno fight i hope they just knew we would know and the twist was just for daniels sake.
      I liked the movie and the story a lot though for sure

      @patricksratliff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But this is consistent with the original film...granted Ash was following orders, and the issues were with "Mother," but he facilitates the almost-suceess of the xenomorph...also, the title of the original film doesn't solely refer to the extraterrestrial on the ship...but also (and in some cases, more critically) to the reveal of Ash as being an alien (as in interloper), and to the whole crew being alienated both by their distance from home and inability to run away and the fact that the corporation is making moves behind their backs. And also - he's merely refining a process he already saw pieces/examples of through scientific inquiry and a drive to Discover and Improve...just without any of s human's moral/ethical hangups. There still remains the question of whence this Engineer goo came from...presumably a genetic breakthrough on the level of say fusion? Maybe we'll find out...

    The engineers tried to "Banish the wolf".
    David is just reversing their work to bring it back.
    This is canon now and confirms two things:
    1. The xeno existed before David
    2. The engineer mutagen(black goo) was derived or based on dna that either contained "the wolf" or was the wolf. - Hence their attempts to "banish" it".
    In short - They wanted to keep the lifegiving properties but get rid of the wolf, not realising the two go together.The mutagen could never be redesigned, it would always be a wolf at its core and the wolf genes would always manifest, hence all the mutations we have seen so far.
    All this implies the wolf existed before the engineers which then implies the engineers are merely an introduction/subplot to a much grander story to come.

    • @spaceflight1019
      @spaceflight1019 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here's my theory, based upon David's "before you can create you must first destroy" meme:
      We can see by the myriad of systems displayed in the Orrery that the Engineers were spreading life across part of the galaxy. When that life didn't evolve the way they wanted they wiped the planet clean and started over.
      One way to do this is by steering asteroids into a habitable planet. The disadvantage is that it takes millennia for the ecosystems to recover.
      Enter the Xenomorph. It consumes all animal life, lays eggs, and dies off when the food source is depleted. Efficient, but could take a century or more.
      Enter the black goo. Able to destroy (apparently) only humanoid life in a matter of minutes, it would take a few days to clean off a planet like Planet 4. Once activated, it will become inert after a certain period of time, enabling the Engineers to begin the reseeding process quickly.

  • @timpc99

    Yes, Shaw was the original Queen. Her wide open stomach was from David using the black goo and growing morphed eggs (ovamorph) inside of Shaw, then opening her up and cutting them out. This was repeated for each egg you seen the room. She was kept alive by artificial means, including her own mutations induced by David. This is seen as the bony tubes coming off of Shaws head. These items make a sort of flat shield over her head, just like the original Alien Queen.

COVENANT is about David 8 alone, and this perfectly segues from PROMETHEUS and gives new life and impetus to what has become a pretty confused story overall...

    According to the canon "novel" that goes with the movie David said he discovered the eggs in the temple and began to experiment on them not that he actually discovered them which raises the question if the engineers created them or found them and were astonish by their "perfection"

      Then why did he need to have his face stapled to repair it? 1) Walter's body repairs even normally fatal injuries fast, (see neck stab that David replies, "You should be dead") so why does he need Daniels to staple him? 2) in doing so he also exposed that fact that he was David and NOT Walter because Daniels should have known that Walter self repairs so why was she stapling, (repairing) Walter? That's why I think it was David that cut his own arm off to convince the remaining crew that David was Walter. Just my guess.

    What David is likely planning to do now is create the first Alien queen.

    One major problem with David being the creator of the xenomorph is Capt. Dallas clearly says about the pilot of the derelict;
    DALLAS: Alien lifeform, looks like it's been dead a long time. Fossilized.
    So, we're not talking a decade or two, but THOUSANDS, if not TENS-OF-THOUSANDS of years!

    • @MrDeanjam
      @MrDeanjam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's also much more massive than humans or engineers. They should have the space-jockey and engineers be seperate species. The jockeys originally created everything in our part of the galaxy as they were the first developed species. Then the xenos killed them off thousands of years earlier, leaving the engineers to take over their plan. But the engineers want to wipe out humans as they see themselves as the only 'true' creation. That's what I would do.

    • @derrickpatten7252

      Though I think it's an interesting idea, the one problem I have with a progenitor race is they had to have been around for BILLIONS of years, yet they seem technologically, and evolutionary stagnant.
      One would think given the huuuge swath of time they have lived they would have evolved into a higher state of being far beyond human comprehension, or passed on into a new plain of existence.

    • @MrDeanjam
      @MrDeanjam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. But evolutionary & technological blind alleys do happen. Civilizations can stop progressing when there's no catalyst to do so. I'd certainly prefer that to pretending a giant fossilized alien is now Michael Fassbender.

      David didn't create the actual Xenomorph; this is something else similar. The actual "Xenomorph" came much, much before this.. And their DNA or something of that matter is what the engineers used to weaponize the pathogen.
      There is a mural of a Xeno in Prometheus, so it's clear that the aliens were around a lot earlier than David's creations.

    having David create the xenomorphs robs then of their mythical status. I liked it much more when they were Lovecraftian creatures from beyond the stars. Now that all the mystery has been explained ( sorta) they have lost a bit of their power and gravitas

    • @zlipus
      @zlipus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Ehhhh its not done yet. The xenomorph having arms as soon as it bursted out was too coincidental to me. APPARENTLY in the novelization, when david is talking to the captain he fully admits that the engineers made them and he is simply trying to recreate them. He got it right but it proved too aggressive and he had to kill it. So what we see now is supposedly him trying tame them and hence i don't think david's alien is the true thing. Time will tell though... no sense in arguing about it.

    2 things:
    1- you just assume its the engineers homeworld - tbh it just feels more like one of the planet under their control
    2- everyone for some reason assume that david killed elizabeth shaw but it is possible she just died in the crash like he said and he experimented on her body later - it is also possible that is what pushed him over the edge, i dont remember any proof in the movie that he indeed killed her other that seeing her body....

      I can answer that question because I just saw the movie again recently. He does in fact mention that he killed Shaw and she didn't just die in the crash. Daniels was looking through some of his sketches in the "study" or "library" room when David sneaks up on her. She says "Shaw didn't really die from a crash, did she?" and David confirms that it wasn't how she died.

  • @JamalGleeson
    @JamalGleeson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You went over it all, but yeah David’s creatures are not the Xenomorphs we all know and love. He came to that Engineer planet and experimented with existing creatures, hence the whole macabre workshop scene. We also get a hint at this in the script where he found a Xenomorph (proper) already made and experimented on it to try to make it perfect. Xenomorphs were already prefect but David is just following after the legacy of his creaters, trying to make an even better creature. The mural of the Xenomorph is obviously them maybe not worshipping them but memorializing one of their greatest weapons, there is even that scene in Prometheus where there are temporal visual whispers of what happened there and obviously that was a Xenomorph outbreak. Unfortunately for the Engineers, Xenomorphs don’t need a ship to travel off/on a planet. I know some of my information is from the old canon/not relevant anymore but the fact Ridley Scott kept the fact that Engineers created the Xenomorphs was kept as well as tons of other old canon pieces of information, plus that’s what all the signs point to. All this isn’t a reboot or remake or anything it is just continuing the overarching story but with new twists/style to make people think this is ALL NEW EVERYTHING!

    Why are there mini face huggers anyway? Isn't the egg a necessary phase to grow them? Or will he raise the adorable lil guys on his own? • @Crosis0

      They aren't "mini-facehuggers," they're embryos. Basically, what David did was take them out of their eggs and swallow them before they were fully developed. He then regurgitated them and placed them in with the human embryos aboard the Covenant presumably to keep them safe and alive until he can enact whatever evil plan he has concocted for the poor unsuspecting colonists in cryo-sleep.

    I didn't hate the movie but it was disappointing. So many unanswered questions and holes. Like David not using Walter's voice before hand, not having healing skin and no one noticing and no stab wound from the nail. I was hoping she would use the nail to kill him honestly. Would've been good foreshadowing. I'm just sick of the prequels, show the link already and make another actual alien movie. Hello make a movie like alien isolation.

    • @RaikenXion
      @RaikenXion 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Lewis Yes Im the same, I dont hate Covenant I just found it disappointing. Not so much for those little things you mentioned even. But actually for the big things like, how Prometheus ended. Putting the idea in all our heads that the protagonist, the heroine from that movie was going on to get answers; to her being killed off, OFF-SCREEN was unforgivable to me.
      Thats like a unbroken rule for the audience you just dont do in a sequel, especially when its a character you care for or am rooting for from the last movie. I could accept Shaw would die at some point, but "onscreen" so I am given that closure to her character and story arc. Plus I really wanted to see shaw getting her answers from the engineers.
      I think the only link or real connection Ridley can truly give us now, is to show how there were facehugger eggs on Planet-4. And the engineers, studying their problem with humanity, created the facilities on LV-223, where some of the facehugger eggs were transferred, and one of their own caused the outbreak. Escaping LV-223 with the facehugger eggs and eventually got impregnated and put down on LV-426 sending out the warning/beacon.
      That way Ridley would tie up the loose ends and connect the event of LV-223 to everything moving forward.
      From here Fox could do two things, another movie where David uses the covenant crew to be hunted by xenomorphs on Origae-6, in underground caves, going back to a true horror suspense style. And making a follow-up game to Isolation, where you play as a scientific and military crew, who head to LV-223 to find out the fate of the Prometheus mission, and come across the fully grown Deacon, who hunts you and your team, in the same gameplay horror-survival style as Alien: Isolation, and you can explore those temple/dome facilities.

    David IS the creator of the classic Xenomorph.
    Ridley Scott confirmed it in an interview by pointing at a picture of the Xeno and saying: "The Engineers didn't create this guy. David did."
    As for the Space Jockey on LV426 - I think it's gonna be ret-conned as David himself being inside that Engineer suit. He finally came up with a version of the Xeno that could utilize an Androids body to gestate and then used himself as a host.
    He will see it as his final creation, being both the father and mother of the perfect organism. Him dying in the process fits well with his own theory "Doesn't all children want their parents dead?".
    David will then produce the very first actually bio-mechanoid Queen Xeno, which will later lay all those eggs and die.
    Going even further, part of David's programming might even exist in all Bio-mech Xenos like a software virus - and maybe they are all interconnected wirelessly with each other, explaining their hivemind, their ways of seemingly communicating telepathically, AND then why Ash went crazy on the Nostromo. The Alien was communicating with him on some level, corrupting his behavioral subroutines. Wayland-Yutani may have learned about this, which is why Bishop was never affected. He was a new model that was deliberately incompatible with previous ones. He even says himself the old models "always were a bit twitchy", and that it could never happen with his model.
    There ya go FOX! You can hand me my co-writer paycheck now. :))

    As someone below stated, xenomorphs are not only david's creation. He only followed engineer's manual and was able to create a few of them. In Alien movie - Space Jockey was carring a xeno inside him (maybe didnt know about it) and that xeno was able to evolve in queen and lay eggs. Those are eggs seen in Alien. Ship went down because space Jockey died, he doesnt meant to land on that planet it was just unplanned emergency landing. Real creators of xenos are engineers.

  • @Diamonddeath
    @Diamonddeath 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Theory time: The Engineers weren't planning on punishing mankind. They created them as experimental replicas of themselves to use in their Xenomorph creation experiments when enough people finally existed, effectively rendering planet Earth as one of many test runs (planets) perfectly separated from the others by the vastness of space. David decides to take up this mantle. For some reason it winded up killing that planet's Engineers (or more people created by the real Engineers). In a nutshell, Engineers begin Xenomorph creation experiment. Mural depicts their end goal. Perhaps it is their god that they are trying to replicate or resurrect. They go from planet to planet (Petri dish to Petri dish) in order to cultivate varying specimens (civilizations that are different versions of themselves) and then enter hyper sleep in order to wait out the growth of these specimens until they are ripe for testing. I'm thinking the David realized this and unleashed their own experiment on them, or one of their various planets (since the people looked slightly different from both humans and Engineers), to show that he was taking over as the head of the experiment and attempt at recreating their God.

Secondly, the first syllable of the word covenant is pronounced to rhyme with cup, not cop.
    The above is meant in the spirit of cooperation, not criticism - keep up the Good Work! :-)

    I find it ironic that people try to parse out the nuances and complexities of Ridley Scott's Alien lore, as though Scott has indicated he s capable of drafting such complexities. I mean, he can't even get the simplest construct right - that is, writing a believable human character. The crew of both the Prometheus and Covenant were ridiculously inept. Flight attendants on any airline are calmer and better trained for a crisis. That ability alone, in my opinion, obliterates any notion Scott is capable of what, say Frank Herbert is, when creating lore. Prometheus had promising lore potential, I thought (other than the inept human characters - I. mean, run sideways Vickers, if something circular is threatening to roll on top of you!), but Scott solidified himself as in over his head with this disastrous chapter. Most disappointing movie for me in years.

    The original ALIEN in 1979 had some interesting hints of a backstory, but the later films just kept adding things to the plot that made no sense. I can just hear the writers' meetings: "what about this?" "no, what about this?" when all it boils down to how many ways aliens can burst through the skin of a human body.

    I took the ending as David checkmated the crew to trust him and get back into their cryo pods (he could've killed them but he's shown many times he likes that checkmate. He did it to the captain, he did it to all of the crew), the horror of Daniels being knowing that he now has her and can now experiment on her body like he said he would, as well as he has the entire colony to do experiments on. I don't think hes going to pretend to be Walter and wake them all up, or well maybe he does but he has to hide his alien porn when they get to the colony.

    I would like to pitch a theory if i may. After watching covenant several times looking for clues and easter eggs it was there staring me in the face all the time. At the part in the firm where David thinks he has killed Walter please look at walters neck when the flute is removed, it self heals. At the end why would Walter staple his cuts when the flute wounds healed almost instantly. My theory is David disabled Walter and only took what information he needed to infiltrate the ship as Walter, as at the end he does not have Walters memory of the log cabin discussion. This leaves a few quandrys, will the engineers find Walter and revive him to find out what happened to the World where all the sub engineers lived? Will they try now persue David who poses as Walter to stop his grand scheme of things and will we finaly find out about the space jockey, the plot thickens. Please tell me what you think folks have a real good look at the flute stabbing scene then ask youself why would Walter need staples and not heal instantly like back on the planet.

    I think It was Walter at the end. I believe that Walter, the update version of David, was sent by Weyland corp to find and destroy David and take over David's project. That was why the Covenant crew had an accident only weeks away from the Engineer planet. That was why the xenomorph on the Covenant ship did not recognize David. That was why the Mother granted full control of the Covenant ship to David, because Walter's true identity was David 2.0. When the xenomorph was killed by Daniels, David's expression was not sadness but disappointment, because David was Walter. I am 100% sure Daniels will return in Alien awakening, because Walter has no intention to kill his precious experimental hosts and possible xenomorph transporter needlessly.

    First of all, I am sick of hearing people call those "beings" on that planet "Engineers"! They look completely different than the engineers in Prometheus. Their reaction to the ship was the type of reaction you would have when your so called "Gods" have returned. The whole city was built in the Engineers' honor. David killed this entire race due them being a creation of another, in his view, inferior species. He uses this to his advantage to perform his experiments. It's hilarious to me that we as humans can so easily pick out the slightest differences in each other, but can't seem to pick out the difference between two races that were specifically designed to look different on film. The race in ALIEN COVENANT is not the same race from PROMETHEUS. There will be more answers in 5 years, when they decide to make the next Alien movie and Sir Ridley is on his deathbed.

    The corporation knew about what happened, the fact they pushed ahead was being they wanted to see what came of it. The very least they knew what happened and planned to use the creatures in some way.

    I'm not going to lie, I kind of prefer the Alien vs Predator continuity's mythology. Those movies were shit, don't get me wrong. But there's a simplicity to it's mythology that's appealing compared to the pretentious, pseudo-intellectual, pseudo-philosophical, pseudo-theological up-it's-own-ass-ness of the Prometheus/Covenant continuity that thinks it's so much deeper and more clever and meaningful than it really is. Instead, you've got an alien bioweapon, alien big-game hunters, and people caught in the middle.

      You're not alone in this world, buddy. Curious that Scott compared himself with Lucas lately because I think both happen to be frauds; they're the scrootie mcboogerballs of cinema: had fantastic teams once in the past creating designs and ideas they took credit for, and now they need to live up to the the myth.

    in the end of the movie in David's report he states that both Daniels and Tennessee both died in a sleep capsule malfunction, it is left for you to assume David killed them both shortly after putting them to sleep, which would cover up any suspicious activity to just a malfunction. good video tho

    • @ritatoth7487

      Bullshit. We have always wanted to know who the space jockey was and, how the aliens connected to the humanity, who created them. Speak to your own name, but not everyone's. I really really love the old Alien, but hey...this new philosophical line, i think its just great...not perfect of course, but very interesting.

    When I first saw Covenant I was a bit disappointed because I expected : 1. more Aliens and 2. more Engineers. However, it is that story around David and his experiments which gave me back that certain subtle but powerful tension of the first two Alien-movies. Which made me check out the film again for another two times in the theatre.
    I can safely say that I love both prequels for how they give audiences much insight into the creation of the Xenomorphs.
    And am eager to follow the rest of this story too

  • @RichardRagan

    Nicely thought out. Why would the Engineers (and/or David) want to create a creature that kills, why not a creature that creates? Were they fighting against some other life form that we have not seen yet? It seems that David, who values creation would want a creature that creates rather than destroys.

    6:25 The reason he did this is that when he tested his creation out by letting it loose on the crew it died. So in his mind while he is close the Alien still needs to be perfected further. It has nothing to do with wanting humans to suffer

    Engineer city lacks any technology and advanced infrastructure. Remove floating thingy (where did it disappear??) and you can picture of some Roman / Byzantine city. One my theory is that it wasnt Engineer planet at all but one of planets that they have seeded. Creatures on planet even look quite different compared to one in Prometheus.
